Project idea[edit]

What is the problem you're trying to solve?[edit]

What problem are you trying to solve by doing this project? This problem should be small enough that you expect it to be completely or mostly resolved by the end of this project. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

The francophone Wikipedia is currently producing 29 % of women bios and the project les sans pagEs has successfully been launched in June 2016, attracting new contributors and engaging senior contributors. These are good results, but not enough yet.

The main problem that we have identified is that the francophone territory doesn't train and welcome new contributors that understand gender gap issues. We have noticed from the two past projects that it is important to have regular face to face and online activities to foster interest and start making a significant impact online, and for now, this kind of engagement only exists in Geneva, with one-off editathons in other cities, but held by the same Geneva team.

What is your solution to this problem?[edit]

For the problem you identified in the previous section, briefly describe your how you would like to address this problem. We recognize that there are many ways to solve a problem. We’d like to understand why you chose this particular solution, and why you think it is worth pursuing. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

We want to share the knowledge gained in the Geneva project to encourage the takeoff of 4 new locations:

  • Nantes (FR)
  • Paris (FR)
  • Grenoble (FR)
  • Sion (CH)

We will also work on our sustainability through participation to large-scale, international Wikipedia events: that way, les sans pagEs can learn from international experience and share its experience with other language editions of Wikipedia.

Finally, we will build a website showcasing gender gap analyses and resources to make Wikipedia a better place for everyone and help new people contribute. This website will also include our press coverage, so we can gain notoriety and so that our 5 local groups may become self-sufficient, or at least viable, by the end of 2018. We will also produce a short motivational video "Let's fill the gender gap" in partnership with female youtubers. The video will be available on our Youtube channel and on our website.

Project goals[edit]

What are your goals for this project? Your goals should describe the top two or three benefits that will come out of your project. These should be benefits to the Wikimedia projects or Wikimedia communities. They should not be benefits to you individually. Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

Our goals are:

  • To reduce the gender gap in Wikipedia articles by meeting, attracting and training contributors who understand gender gap issues in Wikipedia and create articles accordingly
  • To make the Wikipedia community more diverse and inclusive by meeting, attracting and training contributors from all genders, who understand gender gap issues in Wikipedia and proper care of gender minorities
  • To make the Wikimedia community more diverse and engaed by promoting cross-project cooperation on gender gap issues and encouraging participants to find resources and support in the Wikimedian movement

Project impact[edit]

How will you know if you have met your goals?[edit]

For each of your goals, we’d like you to answer the following questions:

  1. During your project, what will you do to achieve this goal? (These are your outputs.)
  2. Once your project is over, how will it continue to positively impact the Wikimedia community or projects? (These are your outcomes.)

For each of your answers, think about how you will capture this information. Will you capture it with a survey? With a story? Will you measure it with a number? Remember, if you plan to measure a number, you will need to set a numeric target in your proposal (i.e. 45 people, 10 articles, 100 scanned documents). Remember to review the tutorial for tips on how to answer this question.

  • establish regular meetings in four new local groups
    • teach 50 new female contributors how to edit Wikipedia and make them create one article each at least. make 10 of them active contributors by the end of the year
    • enable the local groups to communicate through visiting other local groups and cooperating on larger-scale activities and projects
  • take part in wikimedian events, workshops and Wikimania
    • including taking part in cross-project workshops and editathons, for instance Art+Feminism or GLAM events
    • train past participants to wikidata and commons when they have more experience
    • participate in the wikimedian movement through Wikimania, French Wikiconvention, GLAM eventsin Switzerland and France
    • improving involvement in local chapters WMCH and WMFR
  • promote online results via social media and gain media coverage on the inclusivity efforts of Wikimedia projects and Wikipedia in particular
  • create 1000 new articles on the les sans pagEs project by the end of 2018
  • achieve 5 Quality Articles (Articles de Qualité) by the end of 2018: our goal last year was entirely based on creation and we can now focus on quality as well as quantity
  • have two new local groups meeting regularly and getting ready to become self-sufficient in 2019

Do you have any goals around participation or content?[edit]

Are any of your goals related to increasing participation within the Wikimedia movement, or increasing/improving the content on Wikimedia projects? If so, we ask that you look through these three metrics, and include any that are relevant to your project. Please set a numeric target against the metrics, if applicable.

  • Content
    • Achieve 1000 new articles on les sans pagEs
    • Upgrade quality of existing articles by achieving 5 Articles de Qualité
  • Participation
    • Train past participants to wikidata and commons
    • Train from 3 to 10 regular contributors in each location
    • Train 50 new contributors globally
    • Achieve a total of 250 contributors on the project, both new and experienced

Project plan[edit]

Activities[edit]

Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing? What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project? - manage the association les sans pages which was created in january 2016 to manage funds (there is also some independent funding for some projects) - participate in local cultural events to take photos - animate meetups and workshops - organize events during which we will upgrade existing articles - train new contributors - organize an online contest (possibly) - communicate with other online projects - organize & participate to Art+Feminism events, Wikiloves pride ect.. - organize editathons with GLAM institutions and/or participate to such events

Get involved[edit]

Participants[edit]

Please use this section to tell us more about who is working on this project. For each member of the team, please describe any project-related skills, experience, or other background you have that might help contribute to making this idea a success.

  • Exilexi, coordinating the Parisian chapter of Les sans pagEs. Created around 100 French biographies for the project. I work in digital marketing and can specialize in communication. I have also organized many events, mostly in video gaming: I know how to get people together and how to work together towards a common goal, with shared values. Finally, I'm a rather prominent blogger on the French-speaking Internet, and would like to showcase the Les sans pagEs project on my blog to attract new participants.
  • Kvardek du, participating in the Parisian group, and organizing Art+Feminism events. I'm an experienced Wikimedian. Kvardek du (talk) 09:03, 28 September 2017 (UTC)
  • Yann, founding member of the association, attending local events whenever possible. Yann (talk) 09:45, 28 September 2017 (UTC)
  • DeuxPlusQuatre, I organize the workshops Ateliers Femmes et Féminisme in Nantes. The most important thing is to have given confidence to female contributors who were thinking they would not be able to write an article in Wikipedia, or that they would not dare to photograph in the public space. My greatest success is to have created a friendly climate, a climate without judgment, which allows novices to gain self-confidence, learn to write in Wikipedia.
  • magatim I am the person responsable for the group of Sion. I have participated to work shop in Lausanne in spring 2016 and in Sion in 2017.After this work shop we have created the group in order to participate to fill the gender gap.
  • Opsylac coordinator or Les sans pagEs chapter in Grenoble. I am already coordinator of the Wikimedia France local group in Grenoble (this year I organized 2 editathons + 2 workshops + conferences). Occupying this function, I realized that the gender gap topic really cought people's attention (both participants in editathons and institutional partners) : I think a real dynamic can start here. I have an intimate knowledge of local actors (institutions, associations, etc) and very good writing and communication skills (I am trained as publisher and work as scriptwriter and translator).

Community notification[edit]

You are responsible for notifying relevant communities of your proposal, so that they can help you! Depending on your project, notification may be most appropriate on a Village Pump, talk page, mailing list, etc.--> Please paste links below to where relevant communities have been notified of your proposal, and to any other relevant community discussions. Need notification tips?

We have several project pages and a main central les sans pages. We disseminate information on ,mailing lists (Nantes), twitter accounts, face book pages and participate in our local chapters (mainly WMCH & WMFR). We also post information on other project pages on the French, English mostly (Women in red, Wikilovespride) and post information & events on the Art+Feminism platform

  9. I warmly Support Support this grant for les sans pagEs. As a experienced user (sysop on fr.wp), I have found there a place to contribute with a really great support of the new users, a good cohesion and many valuable persons. I think les sans pagEs may offer another kind of experiences of IRL meetings and organized "workshops" for the greater good of WP, with people from other horizons. Therefore I am and I will stay in that project, and try to help the Parisian group sometimes. Thank you again for having offered a place for me and for many people who wouldn't have been participated otherwise imo on Wikipedia. GrandCelinien (talk) 14:04, 28 September 2017 (UTC)

Let me say this is working very well. There is a real focused and engaged community around this project. People are collaborating with each other and accomplishments are amazing; I have made good friends through this initiative. The project is going on in a crescendo. This should be supported for sure, especially in the context in which the francophone community is so urgently needing initiatives to be proud of. Good job to all, especially Nattes à chat! --Joalpe (talk) 03:35, 29 September 2017 (UTC) Thank you Joalpe, I am so glad to see that some people are enjoying the project and making friends, especially aroun gender gap issues.
