Project Goal[edit]
The main scope of this pre-hackathon workshop is to reach out to new developers/existing developers to turn them into regular contributors as well as to strengthen the community.
Our Focus on :
1. Introduce Hackathon to new upcoming developers
2. Encourage New Developers/Trained Developers to contribute to Wikimedia Hackathon 2022.
3. An insightful social meet up to build their confidence level at learning.
4. Our pre-hackathon meetup is to prepare attendees in the below areas,
- Spell4wiki and Wikisource app feature development
- Create and support on Java Script plugins for Wikimedia projects
We welcome developers, humanists and academics to participate.
Project Plan[edit]
Below are the project plan for the Wikimedia Hackathon 2022-
Before the event, we will be sending out an open call for participation where community members from across India can apply for scholarships to participate in the program. We will form a team of three independent reviewers to review the applications, and decide the scholarships
Pre-Hackathon Workshop day.
This is a full day practical training that will be broken down into multiple sessions. Main session would be for MediaWiki and extension development as well as introduction to relevant Wikimedia technical areas. As participants are expected to have some knowledge of programming and local development, we will focus directly on setting up MediaWiki local development environment for manual installation on the required softwares in the first session of the day. Additionally, the facilitator will guide participants to set up Wikimedia developer accounts. Second session will feature development works and bug-hunting/fixing challenges.
Main Hackathon day.
The main hackathon day will coincide with the main Wikimedia Hackathon to allow participants to participate directly in the main hackathon. Moreover, there would be continuation of bug-fixing challenges from the pre-Hackathon workshop stage. There would be a special presentation and mentoring session about the Wikimedia technical outreach programs and pointers to resources about the programs.
Post Hackathon
Additional surveys to gauge participants' perception and the impact the event has on them would be administered. Lead facilitator would provide after-event support on development questions and mentoring for interested participants. We will keep participants in contact via social media groups and follow-up with retraining events at some time in the future.

By the end of the session,
- The participants from the hackathon will automatically become members of our community
- We will write a blogpost to highlight the learning experiences of participants from the hackathon
- Participants will also be able to use the quick contribution to Wikimedia projects.
- After the hackathon we will conduct a survey to determine the challenges of Participants with regards to contributing to Wikidata using these tools

- Number of events organized: 3
- Have at least 25 developers signed-up for Wikimedia developer account and get familiarity with developing Spell4wiki & Wikisource app.
- Have at least 5 active developers to sustain technical contribution after the end of the project
- Have newcomer developers fix some real bugs. This item will mostly focus on the quality and technical complexity of the work rather than sheer quantity.
