Volunteer retention, and motivation are key required elements within the Wikimedia movement, however, there's usually a high rate of volunteer drop out, mis-information and burn out after some outreach programs and events within communities.
What is your solution to this problem?[edit]

Wikisoccerthons will engage volunteers in both online, and offline events, that will help create and improve content on selected Wikimedia projects, but at the same time making an outreach for awareness about the Wikimedia movement, projects and activities.
Project goals[edit]
What are your goals for this project? Your goals should describe the top two or three benefits that will come out of your project. These should be benefits to the Wikimedia projects or Wikimedia communities. They should not be benefits to you individually.

- Provide volunteer engagement and retention approaches that can be replicable.
- Increase the number and quality of: articles, images, and items on Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata, (respectively).
- Increase awareness of Wikimedia projects and free knowledge.

For each of your goals, we’d like you to answer the following questions:
- During your project, what will you do to achieve this goal? (These are your outputs.)
- Once your project is over, how will it continue to positively impact the Wikimedia community or projects? (These are your outcomes.)
For each of your answers, think about how you will capture this information. Will you capture it with a survey? With a story? Will you measure it with a number? Remember, if you plan to measure a number, you will need to set a numeric target in your proposal (i.e. 45 people, 10 articles, 100 scanned documents).

- Mid-project and final reporting posted on meta and other public channels for community input.
- Atleast four Wikisoccerthon events have been successfully organised (online and/or offline), and Wikimedia volunteers have created a stronger relationship with an affiliate of a national sports association in Kampala, Mbale or Jinja District in Uganda.
- Atleast 10 people (new volunteer participants), able to present, showcase, communicate, project activities to a given audience or at a Wikimedia conference.

Are any of your goals related to increasing participation within the Wikimedia movement, or increasing/improving the content on Wikimedia projects? - Half of whom are expected to be newly registered users: 176
- Number of new active editors: 25
- Number of content pages created or improved, across all Wikimedia projects: 40
Project plan[edit]
Activities[edit]
Tell us how you'll carry out your project. What will you and other organizers spend your time doing? What will you have done at the end of your project? How will you follow-up with people that are involved with your project?
"Wikisoccerthon events" will be used as one of the main approaches for outreach, training, and community building in 3 Districts of Uganda (Kampala, Mbale, and Jinja). This will involve pre-event logistical planning and training, online and offline event organisation, as well as post event metric documentation which will be shared with the community and volunteer participants, for improvement and involvement in the next event.
- The first three months will involve project management, communication, and setting the grounds for online project activities
- Collaboration, partnerships and a common understanding of the project and team roles will be crucial at this stage.
- The next three months will focus on volunteer outreach, training, community input and reporting:
- Half of the project objectives are expected to have been met.
- The second last quarter will see an increased engagement of volunteers, and contributions to content on the various Wikimedia projects.
- This will also involve editing competitions, prizes and offline events.
- The final quarter will focus on sustainability measures, and project impact.
- Some of the project equipment and materials will be donated to volunteer participants, a local or international Wikimedia affiliate.

- For gender inclusion the sixth offline event for Women will be held in Kampala

Community engagement[edit]
How will you let others in your community know about your project? Why are you targeting a specific audience? How will you engage the community you’re aiming to serve at various points during your project? Community input and participation helps make projects successful.
Once the project grant has been approved, all upcoming events will be publicly shared with the intended target audience. A community survey was carried out between November - December 2019.
- Another round of community engagement will be planned mid-way the project for community input.
COVID-19 planning[edit]
This summary is based on the Community Resources/COVID-19 notice on 24 March 2020, corresponding guidance and updated schedules from the Project grants team.
The activity schedule and budget in this proposal have been restructured to meet the requirements for offline events/travel as a minor focus in the following ways;
- A majority of the monthly project activities (nine) will be done online/remotely
- Travel outside the country has been canceled
- In-country travel (Kampala to Jinja) has been limited to 8 people
- Travelling to Mbale will be restricted to less than 10 people in total.
- The first offline events have been scheduled towards the end of the year, and can be pushed even further to early 2021 (if need be).
- The second and third offline events have been postponed to February and April 2021.
Guidelines and measures[edit]
Based on the Wikimedia Foundation's response to COVID-19 pandemic, together with directives and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) issued by the Government, National Task Force for Covid-19, Ministry of Health, and World Health Organisation
- The project team and volunteers will work remotely/online (from home or indoors) as much as possible.
- The private office space will only fully be used half way into the project, (unless there's justifiable need to use the office space otherwise), and will be sanitized before and after access by volunteers.
- All project participants will be obliged to follow the SOPs, together with advice from District and local health departments (to coordinate testing where necessary)
- Project participants who are ill or who are caring for ill family members may be replaced as necessary to tend to themselves or their families.
- Offline event venues, and private transportation means will be sanitized before and after usage, access to be provided only to project participants.
- Options of holding the offline events on weekends and/or at non-crowded venues will be explored.
- Social distancing and limited in-person contact will be emphasised whenever possible at offline events.
- A check in call with the Wikimedia projects grant team or a Program Officer to provide further guidance, mid-way through the project before offline events start, will be held
- Depending on the prevailing situation, the offline events will not be open to the public, but will be primarily smaller community events for selected project participants.
- In coordination with the National Task Force for Covid-19 (also at the target District levels), safety measures and guidelines will be constantly echoed to all participants and effected throughout the project (start to finish).
Impact of travel/offline events removal[edit]
Incase the prevailing situation is not favourable for offline events or incountry travel to happen;
- The project team of 10 people will be advised to connect remotely with volunteers in Jinja and Mbale.
- Resources for converting offline events to online events will be used further with and by the volunteers in the target locations.
- Virtual community outreach will be achieved, but could be a limit to project sustainability, and offline community engagement.
- A tailored support session will be requested from the Project grants team or program officer to re-purpose or return the funds for offline events to the Wikimedia Foundation.

- Project Lead
- Ssebaggala Douglas is a volunteer participant in Wiki Loves Africa 2020.
- He was previously an Information and Knowledge support contractor for the Movement Strategy, to deliver recommendations for Wikimedia 2030.
- He supported the Movement Strategy Community Relations team in carrying out community conversations, and Strategy Salons.
- Currently a volunteer interim secretary/CEO with a local grass-root football club (Kawempe District FA 4th Division league 2019-2020) in Kampala.
- Previous project experiences have been with the Uganda Open Mapping Program as a mapping supervisor in 2018.
- Creating OpenStreetMap Uganda (MapUganda), a local indigenous non-government organisation in 2017.
- Involvement with the Youthmappers’ network to set up 5 Youthmappers inauguration chapters in Uganda
- And carrying out training and supervision on HOT’s Financial Inclusion Mapping project (21 Districts in - Eastern Uganda) 2015-2016
- Other Project experiences were with coordinating mapping day activities between 2011-2014

Project accountant: the online shift of activities will have financial reporting transparently done by the project lead and assistant, guided by the budget items.
- Survey respondents (basing on the 10 responses to the 2019 survey), and 2020 survey when it's carried out.
- Results will determine ways of participation, and how some of these activities can be improved or replicated for sustainability

Support Boris Bahire (talk) I strongly endorse project because I see it as a way that will highly increase the engagement through soccer which is the first sport to be having so many followers and this will be an opportunity to breakthrough and boost the Wikimedia projects and grow the community in general.
Strong support Such a project is strongly needed in our movement. In my opinion, it is an anomaly that such need was not addressed earlier. We are missing so much information about several football players, and it is usually hard to find pictures or even basic information such as date/place of birth. This work will help fill a huge gap in knowledge about football players, especially in Africa. - I really endorse this project because when expanding the awareness & reach of Wikimedia's initiatives it is important to engage the youth through their preferred channels. By connecting it to an activity they're passionate about & explaining the relevance of the relationship, Wikimedian's ensure the community adds people who can bring their passion for their hobbies into the free knowledge movement. Douglas has done some extensive work growing the free knowledge community and through his experience has identified this activity as a necessary step in expanding awareness campaigns beyond the established talks & editathons. The outcome from this work will benefit aspiring user groups like Kenya where soccer is a favorite past time of the youth.
