Explain your plan

[edit]

Tell us about how you contribute currently, and how you would contribute if WMF were to gift a used laptop to you.
Happy new year,
I have been contributing regularly to Wikipedia for the past one year. Although not very impressive, I can claim that I have fairly decent quality edits. Contributing from mobile to Wikipedia, however, causes problems in many cases, and sometimes those problems create many complications. I do not have any laptop or desktop. In this case I need a laptop to contribute to Wikipedia properly. But now with the slightest financial problems, it is not possible for me. So I am requesting a low-cost laptop to the Wikimedia community (enough to be a good old-fashioned laptop donation if it works properly). The facilities I may get if I have a laptop which are not available (or not easy) with smartphone are:

  1. Browse through the references in order to check verifiability and add them in appropriate place.
  2. Editing long pages without freezing the screen (i.e CPU freezing problem)
  3. Patrolling recent changes and make appropriate edits without complexity.
  4. Using Visual Editor easily
  5. Using Content Translation easily without erroneous typo.....etc

Update in 2026

[edit]

Current Condition: Since the application, I went through one second hand laptop (DCL) and a firsthand laptop (Asus) both are in weak condition, though I am keeping the later alive by frequent repairing.

Collection: I have been scholarship to participate in Wikimania 2026 in Paris, France and expected to attend it. So, I can collect it physically myself. If I cannot attend physically, my other Bangladeshi fellow Wikimedians can also collect on behalf of me.

Plan of Usage: Since I am focused on the technical contribution, I would need constant use of laptop. My current laptop crashed during last Wikimedia Hackathon due to which, I would not present my project properly. I have around 37 wikimedia-related project codebase with more than 50k lines (rough estimation) of code kept in my laptop. The need of the hour might be to repair it and keep it alive, but a separate laptop might reduce the stress on the current weak one (I repaired it 12 times this year).

Update in 2026

[edit]

Since the application, I have focused on Technical contributions in Wikimedia movement like creating tools with/without collaboration of external parties. I would like to mention here:

  • CampWiz: An award-winning (got Coolest Tool Award 2024 (Honorable Mention) in Wikimania 2024) tool for hosting, evaluating article writing competitions held in wikipedia. The tool is used by 30+ languages in last 2 years. It features everything including actual number of words and bytes added during the campaign (instead of just total words), which prevents a lot of double-submission/repeated-submissions of the same article without adding any significant contributions.
  • FnF List Generator Tool: It creates the list missing articles of a certain topic (currently Feminism and Folklore) that are found in English Wikipedia, but not in target languages. It also features automatic suggested translation of titles. It has been used by over 40 languages in 3 years during Feminism and Folklore Campaign.
  • CampWiz NxT: Like CampWiz, but for commons photography competitions. It gives the jury realtime scores as well as smooth evaluation experience. As of 2026, the tool facilitated 200k+ images to be evaluated. The tool has been used by 10 separate communities/usergroups worldwide.
  • Tonnible (experimental): This is an experimental tool to be integrated into CampWiz Nxt where multiple images with the same subject is grouped using locally-hosted (so no privacy concern) Artificial Intelligence model, then presented the jury with the choice to bulk-reject/approve which reduces workloads. Initially, I experimented with some nature plant images to fine-tune the parameters and it is quite accurate. Since currently it is backend-only tool, you can have a demonstration at this url where two images are grouped into the same groups, so juries would see the photos once and reject/approve the proper ones. This can be extended to plant detection and/other animal/bird detection. Currently, I am experimenting with the tool.
