Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat/Archives/2007-08

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

User rename: Anthony cfc → AGK

Not really sure why this is still Anthony cfc; anyway, I'd like to be known as the same thing across all the projects (other accounts: w:en; commons).

  • Renamed to: AGK

Rename: Daniel.Bryant → Daniel

Please rename "Daniel.Bryant" to "Daniel", to match my other accounts with any notability on Wikimedia. Per a discussion with MaxSem (currently inactive, sadly) a month ago, a message was posted to User talk:Daniel which was deemed sufficient for usurpation purposes, which I understand to be generally the same as the English Wikipedia.

Cheers, Daniel Bryant 13:40, 27 July 2007 (UTC)

User rename: LinuxMigrationJeremyb

Please rename "LinuxMigration" to "Jeremyb" to match all my other wikimedia accts. (w:User:Jeremyb enwiki rename request, commons:User:Jeremyb, and mw:User:Jeremyb for example) I copied the notice that User:Daniel used above and placed it on the talk page of User:JeremyB in case that user needs to be renamed given the similarity. (I wasn't permitted to create an account under the name Jeremyb.) Thanks. --Jeremyb 14:49, 1 August 2007 (UTC)

Since you left a message to JeremyB about usurping his username, I'm not certain of what you want exactly. You see, the filters would probably prevent you from creating "Jeremyb" (lowercase "b") when a "JeremyB" (capital "B") already exists, but we can rename you to "Jeremyb" regardless of this circumstance — which I presume would be what you want, since your username in other projects seems to be "Jeremyb" (lowercase "b"). Normally that would not be done, because the usernames are indeed too similar, but being that the "JeremyB" account has never been used since being created 3 months ago, I would not have a problem renaming you "Jeremyb" (lowercase "b"); I would not, however, be willing to usurp a username that has been created just 3 months ago — "JeremyB" (capital "B") — since the owner could decide to use it at some point and it is too soon to conclude that the account was discarded by whoever it was that created it. Redux 14:45, 3 August 2007 (UTC)
I was just thinking that it might be possible to do the usurpation to prevent confusion between the 2 accounts however I agree that 3 months is not long enough to assume that it won't be used. (Also, I'm not really sure about policy re SUL or even what happens when there are 2 active users with very similar names on the same wiki.) Anyway, Jeremyb is the name that I want. Thanks. --Jeremyb 07:02, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

A Russian admin's activities

In the last days one of the Russian WIKI administrators (and in the same time- an arbitre) EvgenyGenkin never allows to make any changes in the article: http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Урарту despite I show him a lot of sources in discussions: http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Обсуждение:Урарту and he didnt answered. When I post 2 sentences here: http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/Урарту he attacked me and banned also my IP (some days ago he and his east-ukrainian friends banned my account also for the same cause). Pls help to understand if only an administrator have a right to make changes in the article (without explaining why) or any other members too (if they have approved sources)? Best wishes, Ashot, 11:58, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

Hello "Ashot" I have no idea why you brought it up here on meta-wiki sysop noticeboard. Your request is completely concerned with ruwiki and only. You'd better to find another places. We have no right and reason to intervene other communities' issues. thanks. --Aphaia 13:15, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

User:Azdiyy evading block

I request that an admin indef blocks الأزدي (talk · contribs · CA) because he is the same indef blocked user Azdiyy (talk · contribs · CA) (same name but in Arabic alphabet) who was blocked here on meta by Guillom and on Commons and of course on arwiki for trolling and even on arwiki mailing list. Azdiyy started trolling as usual and requested removal of cu access from arwiki checkusers. Other evidence that he is the same user includes this edit where Azdiyy refers to discussion in arwiki about desysoping of Brion who gave himself sysop access on arwiki to test a bug. However, Brion removed his access after an IRC chat with an arwiki user, so, this discussion was not reported here and the only way to know that it ever existed is to read arwiki RfA page. Not to mention many spam e-mails that User:الأزدي sent using this account on meta saying that he is Azdiyy. --Meno25 15:58, 22 July 2007 (UTC)

Opinions about this issue? The Arabic name transcribes "al-azdiyy". But I don't see direct misbehaviour on Meta (sending mails is not traceable for us). I would propose not to block him, but I want other sysops to spend their opinion. --Thogo (talk) 23:28, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

OK, now this is obvious vandalism. Trans:

"The one million silliness milestone starts here. Enrich Wikipedia with your bullshit and laugh with us.

We wish you useless contributions. These are some tips that may be useful to you:

  • Stay away of admins.
  • Stay away of old users.
  • Don't edit what others have wrritten.
  • Don't edit what others may write.
  • Don't nominate any silliness for deletion.
  • Pretend that you are stupid amongest stupid people.
  • Laugh with us."

This is only the first paragraph. The second paragraph is even worse. (Azdiyy here is mocking the welcome template in arwiki.) I can get an arwiki admin to confirm the trans but Azdiyy will say that arwiki admins are ganging up upon him. If you need a native speaker of Arabic who is not an arwiki user, you may contact Anas Salloum or FayssalF. Both are enwiki admins. Another proof that الأزدي is Azdiyy is that Azdiyy created an account with this very same name on arwiki and used الأزدي as his signature in arwiki as in here, here and here. --Meno25 09:52, 13 August 2007 (UTC)

Views? Association of Sock Puppets

Now I confess I was about to delete it and then thought - how about Category:Humor (even if that was not what was intended)? --Herby talk thyme 18:04, 25 July 2007 (UTC)

I agree with adding it to Category:Humor. I think that that may have even been intended by the original creator. Greeves (talk contribs Wikipedia) 01:58, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
Note: I am not a sysop and this was "requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat." Sorry! Greeves (talk contribs Wikipedia) 01:59, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
It's quite alright, Herby is an admin asking other users for their opinion. You are more than welcome to share your comments. :) Cbrown1023 talk 02:38, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
i think adding category:humour may offend sockpuppets. --الأزدي 20:32, 11 August 2007 (UTC)
That's a bad thing because? ... IMHO, it's either deletion fodder, or humor (that's only marginally not deletion fodder). Also since it's being used to apparently disrupt an ongoing RfA here by you, it may need to go anyway. ++Lar: t/c 18:45, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
An RfD may be an idea here. Majorly (talk) 19:08, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
if you put yourself in the shoes (or socks) of a sockpuppet, will you want the label humor? i agree to rfd if socks can vote. الأزدي 22:16, 15 August 2007 (UTC)
Sockpuppets tend to be frowned on by users, and can certainly not vote in an RfD - at least not with multiple accounts. Majorly (talk) 22:30, 15 August 2007 (UTC)

Username changes for tr.wiki

Hi, I'm a sysop on the Turkish Wiki. I've noticed that requests for username change from the Turkish Wiki are being ignored. Some of these users have been anxiously waiting for more than a month to have their requests fulfilled. If you need more information about any of these requests please let me know and I will pass it on. Thanks --Pinar 11:07, 9 August 2007 (UTC)

Error renaming a username on ca.wiki

I changed the username ca:UserSoda-POP to ca:User:Deesa and then, correcting a typo, I changed again to ca:User:Deessa. See ca:Special:Log/renameuser. Everything seemed fine, but now the old contributions of the user are at ca:Special:Contributions/Deesa. Is there any explanation? Can it be corrected? --Vriullop 10:59, 18 August 2007 (UTC)

I'm afraid the sysops and bureaucrats here cannot help you with this. There is a bug request here for your interest. Thanks. Majorly (talk) 14:23, 18 August 2007 (UTC)
I would propose to rename the user again (first "Deessa" to something else, and then again "Deesa" to "Deessa"). But I'm not sure if it will then work. --Thogo (talk) 15:30, 19 August 2007 (UTC)
The job queue length on enwiki is currently 1,150,639. The developers don't have to do anything else, it'll happen, we just need to be patient until the server gets around to it. ~Kylu (u|t) 00:11, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
Probably not 12 days. Well, I see you've renamed the user after 3 minutes; I don't know if the job queue executes jobs as they are added to the queue, but probably not. It seems it transferred the contributions of Deesa to Deesaa (none) before transferring the edits from Soda-POP to Deesa. You probably need help from a developer now. --.anaconda 00:28, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. It seems I made the second change before the process of the first one was finished. I will ask for help to a developer. --Vriullop 16:55, 20 August 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the point, .anaconda, hadn't thought about the possibility that the second rename might quash the first group of transfers... perhaps that could use a write-up on bugzilla? ~Kylu (u|t) 22:25, 21 August 2007 (UTC)

ja:WP:NODA evading block

I request that an admin indef blocks User:Ph.D. and User:Teatime because it is suspected that he is a sockpuppet of User:Noda,Kentaro who was blocked by User:Majorly(And he has some sockpuppets, such as User:Ball and User:Strong even on Meta-Wiki.). the Interwiki map

Hi all! The Interwiki map has a number of requests that are outstanding where there is no clear consensus. If you have time to give an opinion that would be swell. This discussion in particular Talk:Interwiki_map#Wikinvest could definitely use more opinions. I have been doing a large part of the management of the page lately and I don't mind a bit except for the queasy feeling that I am going on just my own thoughts for some of these. Which is how it can work, one admin's judgement is sufficient, but hey, I thought I'd mention it. I'll give it a few more days and then act on whatever is outstanding based on whatever further input I get and my own judgement. ++Lar: t/c 10:46, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Sure, I'll do that later today. Thunderhead 11:44, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

Info rather than help

Open proxies. I've asked nl:Gebruiker:RonaldB if they will bring their Open Proxy bot to Meta and they have said yes. It checks IP edits against an Open Proxy database and flags IPs that are in it. It is running on Commons and en wp (w:Wikipedia:Open proxy detection) - yes that is where I've been getting open proxy info - if they are active and the edits are unconstructive I've been blocking them. However I suggest thought is given before blocking TOR nodes - quite a few valid user use them (vandal edits are obviously different) - cheers --Herby talk thyme 18:26, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
