Report 2019

[edit]

During 2019, we actively participated in the Wikimedia Strategy Direction for 2030.

We organiced training workshops on line and off line.

We have dedicated this year to educate women as new editors on Wikipedia, teaching them to contribute and add content, fucusing on attracting women contributors, independently of the content they wanted to contribute.

We tried to foster an environment that is supportive and inclusive among Latin American women contributors.

We have been working in collaboration with user groups and chapters of the region. We tried to strength the perception of Wikimedia and free knowledge in countries and places in latinoamerica that still don’t know the movement, that is why we mentored and supported the development of new communities in Latin American countries, like we did with the creation of Wikimedistas de Republica Dominicana.

We organiced works in Wikiquote, Wikipedia and off line events in diferent countries of Latin America, such as in Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Peru, Bolivia and Republica Dominicana.

We detected women users who were already editing, but in an autonomous way, and we invited them to join us. Many editors joined us. We organiced fraternization activities and meetups in different cities around the region. We reached 81 members. We always follow the new editors and watch the new articles. We maintain contact online, to encourage them to edit and to build community.

We has collaborated with Art+Feminism, an initiative in favor of the visibility of the contributions of cis and transgender women in the fields of arts and feminism, through editions, editing marathons in Wikipedia in which articles on women, arts and feminism are created, improved and translated.

We organiced Interwiki Women Collaboration II and Interwiki Women Collaboration III, a multi-country, multi-lingual collaborative proposal to translate relevant women's biographies.

We supported actively and collaborated with the campaign Visible WikiWomen 2019, a global campaign to add images to the biographies of women who do not yet have an illustration.

We also developed three challenges: 100 Latin American women on Wikiquote, 100 Central American women on Wikipedia in Spanish and Mes del cine africano with The AfroCine Project.

Until October 2019 we reached to create 6.95 K articles, see Campaign Muj(lh)eres latinoamericanas en Wikimedia.

Work in Dominican Republic

[edit]

In Dominican Republic there were no editors or people with experience in editathons or any activity about Wikimedia projects. We contacted a feminist group that had been working in Santo Domingo for several years, CIPAF. They knew about dominican women but they didn't know about Wikipedia. Together, we were working on a list of women of whom we intend to choose the most notable to create their biographies during the year. We work with the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo y spaces with computers, internet and projection equipment. We went to different cities across the country teaching how to edit Wikipedia. It is important to take into consideration the low representation of the wikimedia movement in Latin America and particularly Central America. Excluding Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Mexico, Uruguay and Venezuela, where there are Wikimedia chapters, participation in Latin America is scarce. There are user groups in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru with whom we are in permanent communication, but outside those countries there is very little user participation in Wikipedia and much ignorance among the population of our work and mission. Female participation is still lower in all those countries. There were nine countries where we don't have wikimedists or wikipedians working. One of them was Dominican Republic, where Wikipedia is little known. Our user group is interested in building communities throughout Latin America, to get people interested in our movement. Beginning with Dominican Republic, we hope this will be the beginning of a great campaign throughout Latin America. The most important goal was is not the number of articles created but that the Dominican Republic community knows Wikimedia projects and understands that Wikipedia is an important and accessible source of knowledge in which you can not only access the information but contribute to create it. Our main interest was to create a community of wikimedists in the Dominican Republic. We always follow the new editors and watch the new articles. We maintain contact online, to encourage them to edit and to build community. We intend to set a precedent so that this event can be replicated every year.

Target outcome Achieved outcome Explanation
To build a wikimedian community in Dominican Republic that could access and contribute to free knowledge. Done As a result of the great success of the edith-a-thons, I am very proud to announce that we created a new user group. Many of the women who attended the edita-a-thons promised that they will follow the user group. Wikimedistas de Republica Dominicana. We also created the Categoría:Wikipedia:Encuentros en Republica Dominicana,

Categoría:Wikipedia:Wikimedistas de República Dominicana and Category:Editatona Republica Dominicana 2019.

To recruit new women editors and to engage them as contributors on all Wikimedia projects. Done We continue connected through our page in Facebook and the users talks pages in Wikipedia. Los aportes de las dominicanas en Santiago
To promote the participation of Dominican women in Wikimedia projects. Done A lot of participants showed interest in continuing editing. In fact, since I came home, they to meet once a week and they continued to improve the articles. I was supporting and helping them online.
To increase the number of Dominican women editors. Done We didn't have a single female editor in Dominican Republic. Now we have many that are and will continue working.
To add and improve content about Dominican women. Done According with Wikidata, we have now 207 biographies of dominican women.
To organize meetups with the media to promote understanding of Wikimedia projects. Done We had meetings with one TV channel and with one radio channel. I had meeting with the Dean and the Provost of the University, they showed great interest in supporting a new wikimedia user group in Dominican Republic. I had a meeting with the media of the University of San Domingo, they took photos and interview us.
To promote editathons in order to make visible the contributions of Dominican women to society. Done We organized 4 edit-a-thons. The classrooms were full. It came many more people than we expected. The assistants of the editah-a-thons were university teachers. The idea is to continue working with them. We talked about creating an Education Program with university professors to teach with Wikipedia in the classroom.
To promote the importance of Wikipedia as a source of free and accessible information and to stimulate the use of Wikipedia in Dominican Republic. Done We believe that those events helped to strength the perception of Wikimedia and free knowledge in a country that still ddn’t know the movement.
To improve Wikidata. Done Every article was also created in Wikidata.
To create articles in Wikiquote Not done
To upload material to Wikimedia Commons. Done More than 200 images were uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. People are still uploading photos. Images from dominican women will be used tu create their articles.
Number of events 4 Done Three of the events were very successful. One had problems because the internet was not working due to a generalized problem of the company at a national level throughout the country.
Event 1, number of participants expected 10. Number of participants 55. Some participants did not dare to create an account or edit, but they still asked many questions and wrote in their books.

Multimedia knowledge Space at Wikimania 2019 in Stockholm

[edit]

User:Caleidoscopic organized, with User:DarwIn, User:MB-one and User:Sannita, the Multimedia knowledge Space at Wikimania 2019 in Stockholm. Free knowledge does not only use text as a medium but is increasingly shared in the form of graphics, photography, video and sound to name just a few. Especially minor languages profit a lot from non-written material, which helps to strengthen inclusivity and diversity and Wikimania should include a space to host multimedia content creators and curators. Possible topics for talks, workshops and meetings are photography and photo editing, use of video in Wiki projects, curation of media with structured data, oral knowledge collection and many more. The space topic corresponds especially to Goal 4: Quality Education as multimedia enables better education independent of specific languages. The space leaders are furthermore strongly committed to a policy that promotes Sustainable Development Goals 4, 10 and 12 and welcome any sessions, that connect the space topic with any other Sustainable Development Goals.

Topics
Oral knowledge recording
Using video to built knowledge
Photo walks
Portrait photography photo booth
Glam space cooperation
