Updates for 2024[edit]

Hi all, I am Tila Cappelletto, a member of the Campaign Programs team at the Wikimedia Foundation. For this year, we are providing some support in updating this page design and structure. Please add any recommendations or feedback that you have below -- TCappelletto (WMF) (talk) 15:07, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@TCappelletto (WMF) hello, thank you taking the lead to make a designated space for 2024.
Would you please point me the link where you have archived the 2023 discussion? IMHO, any discussion is our resource, even to themes outside of Women and celebration. That idea comes from my back ground, a non-en community whee we tend to catch up later and often times wish to contrast with previous discussion we might have missed. Hope I am not asking for much burden on you. (= Cheers, -- Omotecho (talk) 16:46, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Omotecho! Thanks for your feedback. Yes, absolutely, here you have the 2023 talk page archive link. Warm regards, TCappelletto (WMF) (talk) 16:50, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Gosh, @TCappelletto (WMF), you are super fast, and so happy you guided me with such warm hospitality. Rubbing my hands to read 2023 discussion. Cheers, -- Omotecho (talk) 17:16, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hatnote and tab index[edit]

I liberally added translate tags to the purple-back hatnote, as well as the tab index.

Small worry: @TCappelletto (WMF), hi again, I like emoji very much, and not sure about how they are applied universal. Will the crystal ball emoji and those beautiful icons be printed / shown anytime in any language / on any device?

  • For our readers: Compatible with old OS PCs or surviving limited capacity mobile phones? I recycled my old ones, wish I could have experiment beforehand.
  • For peer Wikimedians anywhere on this planet; Will there be anybody seeing tofu blank squares or thick double bars but not emojis/symbols? Are emoji User Preference friendly? Me a worry bug (; --

Omotecho (talk) 18:56, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the translation tags, @Omotecho! Your accessibility concern regarding the emojis is very valid. I must admit I love emojis and wanted to give the page some joy by adding them. I could not find similar cool .svg files on Commons. But we are open to more accessible image suggestions, please share! Thanks, TCappelletto (WMF) (talk) 19:39, 16 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Adding Event Help[edit]

Hi Y'all. I've tried to add some online events to this page Celebrate_Women/Events, but it doesn't seem to be updating on the main page Celebrate_Women. Can someone please assist and/or tell me what I'm doing incorrectly? Thanks in advance! --Kiraface (talk) 17:50, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Astinson (WMF): can you have a look at this? Several of the event-tables aren't updating. Ciell (talk) 19:21, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell@Kiraface because of the way content translation works, we need to occasionally update the "mark for translation" on the event page. This has the added benefit of not immediately allowing vandalism or other content to migrate to the main page and allows us to have translated headers in the columns, this has the downside of not being instantaneous. We can add a note in the untranscluded header.Astinson (WMF) (talk) 21:48, 21 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the explanation Alex! Ciell (talk) 07:20, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Alex! Kiraface (talk) 13:07, 22 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I’m a girl and I have a question[edit]

What’s an event on wikimedia Cometkeiko (talk) 17:18, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I dont know DirkjanenBert (talk) 19:26, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, @Cometkeikoand @DirkjanenBert. In this context, an event on Wikimedia is often times editathons, for example. Knowledge equity is a central pillar of the Wikimedia movement’s 2030 strategy and initiatives like this help us tackle one of the main pervasives knowledge gaps in the Wikimedia projects, the gender gap. I hope this answer and the links are useful to ground our conversation! Best, TCappelletto (WMF) (talk) 10:45, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks DirkjanenBert (talk) 15:14, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Wikimedia Projects, huh? More like Wikipedia projects. Why not just advertise this on Wikipedia rather than places like Commons, who are completely left out of all of this. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 04:36, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again, @Chris.sherlock2, as @MMulaudzi-WMF shared earlier, this global campaign includes editing events targeting Wikimedia Commons as well: please check the events table. You may also like to read this recently published research on how online images amplify the gender bias and the importance of Commons to respond to that. Disruptive Advertising of Campaign[edit]

Hello, I am asking for a reduction in the advertisement of this wikimedia effort. I find it disruptive. Brentleyland (talk) 21:02, 3 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

its pointless
its just biased towards females, because they would never celebrate men. and i thought wikipedia wasnt biased
i dont know what im gonna do anymore Frankithian (talk) 02:13, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Brentleyland, sorry you feel that way. The number of women+ editors as well as the number of articles, files and items we have about women+ should be a concern to us all. The banner ('advertisement' as you call it) will only show a few times per week: in your personal settings you can opt-out of these kinds of banners.
@Frankithian: by the time our statistics become this bad about information and participation of men, I would be happy to support you in creating a campaign similar to this one to improve these aspects in our movement again. Ciell (talk) 10:46, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
i like celebrating women dont get me wrong
i just think men deserve to be celebrated too
everything should be celebrated
everything and everybody has had a struggle Frankithian (talk) 02:34, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hey @Frankithian, you are welcome to launch a campaign focused on celebrating men if you would like to. MMulaudzi-WMF (talk) 10:40, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Why are we celebrating women and men in the first place we don’t do it here in ksa Cometkeiko (talk) 19:20, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Cometkeiko because of the extent of gender inequality that exists globally Women's History Month and International Women's Day are days recognized and celebrated globally to close the gender gap in society. Our movement contributes to the knowledge ecosystem by working together with volunteers and partners to close these gender-related and other knowledge gaps in line with our principles (notability, neutrality and verifiability). So while this might not be a day celebrated in KSA, it is recognized by our movement and international multi-lateral bodies. MMulaudzi-WMF (talk) 13:33, 14 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Oppose political activism on WP, or any[edit]

I'm here to do encyclopedic work, not to "celebrate" anything, not even women. I'm definitely not here to help activists push notions like a supposed gender gap, I'm not here to see WP suffocated by a cancerous political bureaucracy, a make-work-scheme well funded by activist millionaires and billionaires with too much time on their hands. Thanks, but no. — The preceding unsigned comment was added by Tickle me (talk) 03:51, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Tickle me of course you are free to work on topics other than content related to women (or women+). To frame the gender gap in our projects as 'supposed gender gap' however is very much untrue: there is a multitude of research and statistics available that support it's existence. Ciell (talk) 10:52, 4 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Only 50% of social science studies get ever replicated at this point, of these pretty much all turn out to be irrelevant due to marginal statistical yield. Any which way, WP is about creating and maintaining an encyclopaedia , not liberating women, animals, or stamp collectors. Much less should it became a playground for bureaucrats and activists of any kind. Tickle me (talk) 05:22, 5 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia[edit]

What is this, Wikipedia Incorporated? I see that Commons is completely left out of all of this. Pretty much par for course. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 04:35, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Chris.sherlock2, do you mean to ask why the campaign is only targeting Wikipedia? If so, the banner is targeting projects beyond Wikipedia - including Commons! Also several campaigns are focused on work being done on Commons. MMulaudzi-WMF (talk) 10:39, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I don’t see any. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 12:19, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Chris.sherlock2, the banners target a specific profile of users/geographies/campaign events. You're welcome to see more under central notice banners. Please also see the events table for more details on Commons specific events. MMulaudzi-WMF (talk) 14:40, 6 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Some Articles, please?[edit]

can someone link some articles for me to edit?CandleGuy1111 (talk) 12:22, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @CandleGuy1111 and welcome to this space. On the events table, you can find campaigns by language and each one of them may be working with different lists, in case you want to search and pick one yourself. Since I believe you may be interested in the English language, I've selected this list for you. Hope this is helpful. Best, TCappelletto (WMF) (talk) 12:33, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Archiving 2024 March Celebrate Women events[edit]

Hi all, I've just added the following message to the "Events" section of the Celebrate Women page.

"Wikimedia movement gender gap events are added to this page around February and throughout March every year. Please come back in 2025 to share your events! Meanwhile, for ongoing gender-gap activities and discussions, please visit the Gender Gap Portal. If you are curious about the 2024 March events, please visit this page."

Please have a look and see if it works well. Suggestions are more than welcome. Thank you! -- TCappelletto (WMF) (talk) 16:38, 12 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
