Hello[edit]

I'm leaning towards having a timely overview at the top, as well as a longer list of links and references at the bottom. The top may change + be archived every so often, and will be closer to a [recent changes] for the whole.

@SJ:, thanks for pinging me, and for bringing back enthusiasm to this meta page.
Pretty much all sister projects now have dedicated areas with COVID-19 information: wikivoyage, wikiversity, wikiquote, wikinews, wikibooks, I have not checked out wikisource yet. Wikipedia has a category with hundreds of subcategories and articles, a Wikiproject and probably a portal too. Commons and Simple also have complete categories dealing with covid-related material. What is the best way to display links to these wmf communities, how do we find out what sort of help these communities need without flooding them with too many newbies? sporadic reports of a second infection[edit]

There have been spordic reports of recovered patients testng positive for a second time. Inumo compromised people[edit]

I was listening to w:NPR earlier where they interviwed an w:immunocompromised woman on w:Here and Now. I later searched and found this article about the topic at https://crosscut.com/2020/03/coronavirus-and-immunocompromised-your-questions-answered, but I don't want to repeat information that is probably better described on enwiki or at Simple. I cannot speak for others, but the reason I contribute here is because the COVID-19 article on meta, where most land on, appears to be controlled by the meta-authorities. I just googled this term and was surprised to see the enwiki entry way at the bottom of the search results. on top I saw a oneliner:

and right after there was a short message from Health Canada.

Racial and gender breakdown of cases[edit]

I heard (and saw graphs) on TV about African-Americans being affected much more than others. I also remember seeing a Canadian report that said women were 55% of the total reported, a statistic that meant nothing at the time since the sample was very small. I am not familiar with work being done on enwiki in this regards, but I know there is a tremendous amount of effort and good results coming out of it.

The problem, I believe, is that we need some embassadors to translate this work into something that is useful for the average person on the street, since it appears that the survivours are those with more knowledge about the dos and don'ts. Does everyone know how important social distancing is? Does everyone have the luxury of sitting home to watch TV, instead of having to continue going out to work for a living? As an example I saw a social network post by a young person who was complaining that there was no social distancing at the construction site where they work.

Off topic?[edit]

I was surfing the web looking for something to ignite some interest in this page which is not getting a lot of attention, and happened to bump into a Wikipedia weekly podcast that I was not aware of. It was actually what appeared to me to be a recording of a recent videoconference in which 5 participants (one or two of whom I actually recognized) were displayed in their own little video box.

Anyway, before I get off track here, a lot of the discussion revolved around COVID-19, how the community is handling it, and how it is an opportunity to recruit new wikipedians. At least according to my selective hearing. Since this is not a social networking platform I just wondered if anyone else here is interested in discussing or commenting on the COVID-19 aspects of this podcast? I haven't seen the podcast, but a lot of highly educated people are finding themselves unemployed and stuck at home with nothing intellectually stimulating to do. It sounds like a lot of them might want to donate their time to Wikiprojects on a temporary basis. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if "more people edit Wikiprojects when unemployment is high" turns out to be an ongoing pattern. Wikipedia boomed in the 00's when the unemployment rate in the U.S. was very high and it dropped when the economy improved. Darkfrog24 (talk) 14:12, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
