Women's History Month Edit-a-thon is one of the biggest edit-a-thons in Odia Wikipedia, As Project Tiger contest is colliding with it. I request the organisers to kindly look into this matter and take some necessary action so that it will not hamper the existing process of the community. I suggest, if organisers can provide topics related Women, Feminism or others it will help. Thanks---Sailesh Patnaik 18:33, 28 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Saileshpat:, we are trying to fetch more topics under following categories:
  • Women (topics including women personalities, feminism, gender rights, women's interests and healthcare)
  • Arts and Literature (topics including Indian writers, artists, books, other creative arts and works)
  • Science and Technology (topics including scientists, concepts, technology, gadgets)
  • History
  • Health
We will ping you once the additional topics are ready. Hopefully, within a week's time. --Ravi (talk) 14:27, 4 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
@Saileshpat: Please check the new topics list for Odia Wikipedia. These are the English Wikipedia articles that receive the most number of readers from Odia speaking regions. These topics fall under following categories: Women, Science and Technology, Arts and Literature, History and Geography, and Health. The list with 2000 pop-culture topics like movies, actors, etc., that we gave earlier is separately listed here. You can choose to create articles for the contest from both the lists based on your interest. Thanks.--Ravi (talk) 21:17, 13 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Selecting topics by following Indic-language news papers

[edit]

Indian-language News Papers hold a big share in total news paper readership in India and also growing strongest in every 4 years. Odia News paper readership improved by 83% from 2014 to 2018 and many other Indic-languages followed the trend. These news papers which successfully engaged readers and widened their market, created several internal reader surveys and curated their content based on them, which also changed time to time based on readers' interest & needs. So, I would like to suggest that we can take advantage of their vast work to understand readership trends in our respective languages.
Wikipedians can look into the pattern of topics their news paper is providing. For example, Leading newspaper (in Readership) in Telugu - Eenadu is giving special tabloids which covers General Studies, Current Affairs (in tabloid for students and competative exams), Electronics, Gadgets and Technology (in tabloid named e-Naadu), Health (in tabloid named Sukheebhava), and in regular pages there is a page dedicated to conent about women. We can request organizers of Project Tiger to fetch list of articles under the topics which can be listed basing on the pattern followed by our leading local news papers too.
This approch also helps us to gain from wide range of large readerbase created by the news papers in our respective languages. --Pavan santhosh.s (talk) 10:28, 1 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Pavan santhosh.s:, thanks for this valuable feedback. We are trying to fetch more topics under following categories:
  • Women (topics including women personalities, feminism, gender rights, women's interests and healthcare)
  • Arts and Literature (topics including Indian writers, artists, books, other creative arts and works)
  • Science and Technology (topics including scientists, concepts, technology, gadgets)
  • History
  • Health

The topics are based on online audience interest specific to Telugu speaking regions. For example, you can check the Google Trends for India. For future projects, we will explore better means to assess the interest of our target readers.

We will ping you once the additional topics are ready. Hopefully, within a week's time. --Ravi (talk) 14:38, 4 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

Relevant topics missing

[edit]

Kudos to the organisers for such an idea for Indian Language Wikipedias . But, I am a little disappointed not to see topics relevant to India . I find a lots of Hindi/English movies or actors finding place in the list. But where are our Scientists, Writers, National Leaders ! Where are National monuments, temples, folk dances, folk artists ! Where are classical singers, dancers, musicians, musical instruments of India ! I request to include topics like en : Category:Lists of Sahitya Akademi Award winners into the list . Thanks --Hellohappy (talk) 05:12, 2 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

I agree with Hellohappy. --Gazal world (talk) 22:09, 2 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
yes friends. why should local language want to know Hollywood and Bollywood stars ?. we have more native stars to write articles, as Hellohappy said we can write articles about native literature, cultured, books, tourist places ets. so pls try to change list with native priority--విశ్వనాధ్.బి.కె. (talk) 10:11, 3 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
@విశ్వనాధ్.బి.కె.: Yes, and even we also put topics related educational subjects like Physics, Maths, Chemistry, Biology, Philosophy, Psychology etc. This will be very useful to school and college students. --Gazal world (talk) 11:25, 3 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

@విశ్వనాధ్.బి.కె. and Hellohappy:, thanks for sharing your concern.

  • History
  • Health

The topics are based on online audience interest specific to each language speaking region. For example, you can check the Google Trends for India. Unless this content is available in Indian languages, only people knowing English can access such kind of knowledge. By fixing this content gap, we hope to bring more readers to Indian language Wikipedias. We will ping you once the additional topics are ready. Hopefully, within a week's time. About topics for Gujarati language

[edit]

Hello, I want to sign up for upcoming Article Writing Content (March-May 2018). But I feel bad to tell that the topics given in the list seems useless to me. I am skeptical about the subjects you provided as most of them are not related to India or of Indian interest. For example, Battle of Gettysburg (who would be interested in Gujarati article on a battle of American Civil War?). Large number of articles in list are American celebrities and films. I have not heard about many of them even though I watch Hollywood films and interested in US politics. It is very unlikely that a Gujarati reader would be interested in such topics. It seems strange that this topics are listed as most searched Gujarati topics. Some articles in list already has Gujarati articles. For example, Makar Sankranti.

I am interested in writing articles on educational subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Quantum Mechanics, Particle Physics, Philosophy, Western Literature and its Theory, Indian Literature and its theory, Psychology, History etc. The lists you provided ignore these educational topics as well topics our local language (Gujarati) users most likely interested. I think educational topics can be more helpful to readers and students alike. I, myself being a Chemistry student, know that how helpful it can be to students so I want to contribute in these educational subjects. If contest is focused on these and other educational subjects, it will be very helpful to people. I would be contributing more in these subjects due to my access to public libraries and having large educational library. I would also provide other community members through recently opened resource exchange in Gujarati Wikipedia. So I kindly request to create new list of India centred topics, topics of local language reader interest and educational topics for the Article Writing Contest. I would like to invite members of Gujarati Wikipedia community, @Nizil Shah:, @KartikMistry:, @Aniket: and @Dsvyas: for inputs. Thank you. --Gazal world (talk) 13:15, 21 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

I agree with Gazal world here. For me also, most of topics seems picked from popular article on enwiki which most likely won't be popular in Indic wikis. --KartikMistry (talk) 13:27, 21 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
I also find most topics in list useless for the readers of Indic languages. --Nizil Shah (talk) 13:43, 21 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Gazal world:, thanks for your feedback. We will try if we can provide more topics on the subjects you have expressed interest. For articles that already exist, the community can consider expanding the content and improving the quality. --Ravi (talk) 13:22, 21 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

I agree with the points @Gazal world: has raised and thank him for beinging this to my attention. There are many articles listed here, which aready exist in gu.wiki and around 90% are non-relevant to Gujarati readers as a priority. Of course, one can argue that all articles must be in all languages, but we should make our priorities sorted first.
@RAyyakkannu (WMF):, instead of adding more topics here in this list of non-useful topics, we should aim to get list sourced from more reliable searches/data. I don't know what crieteria were used to determine that these are most searched topics in Gujarati, whether that was any on wiki research or google analytics, etc. To me, the list here seems redundant, we need to rather create a new list for Gujarati. You might want to consider checking with other languages as well on what they feel for the topics listed.--DhavalTalk 13:54, 21 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hi Ravi what about to make each community for their own preference list to write?, are to develop stubs, material in Google Translate articles which are important but not translated fully yet.--Viswanadh.BK (విశ్వనాధ్) (talk) 04:06, 4 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

@విశ్వనాధ్.బి.కె., Dsvyas, KartikMistry, Gazal world, and Nizil Shah:, since this is a national level contest with many communities participating, it is important the list of topics has a common standard to ensure fair competition. So, we request to create articles for this contest only from the given list of topics. It will be the responsibility of content organizers to disqualify other submissions. Also, the topics listed here are based on online audience interest specific to each language speaking region. For example, you can check the Google Trends for India. Unless this content is available in Indian languages, only people knowing English can access such kind of knowledge. By fixing this content gap, we hope to bring more readers to Indian language Wikipedias.

About topics of Malayalam

[edit]

I also feel the same things other community members told. I feel malayalam related topics are very few. In the topics given to Malayalam, the majority of topics are covered of movies, movie artists in which Indian artists/movies are very less. More than 80% of personalities/movies are from hollywood while from Malayalam is very less in count. Also i would also like to go with option some one suggested to include more women personalities, because of Wikipedia foundation is also conducting #wiki4women encouraging activities. So I request to add more Malayalam related topics. Jinoytommanjaly (talk) 17:46, 5 March 2018 (UTC)Reply

@Jinoytommanjaly and Malikaveedu: The topics listed here are based on online audience interest specific to Malayalam speaking regions in India. For example, you can check the Google Trends for India. Unless this content is available in Indian languages, only people knowing English can access such kind of knowledge. By fixing this content gap, we hope to bring more readers to Indian language Wikipedias. However, based on unanimous feedback by all Indian language Wikimedians, we are also trying to fetch more topics under following categories:
  • Women (topics including women personalities, feminism, gender rights, women's interests and healthcare)
  • Arts and Literature (topics including Indian writers, artists, books, other creative arts and works)
  • Science and Technology (topics including scientists, concepts, technology, gadgets)
  • History
  • Health

[edit]

If these lists were picked up by the day-to-day results obtained from Google Trends, I must say that, it is a very poor methodology to choose articles in any encyclopedia. These trends are highly correlated with any breaking or trending news events which may have no significance at all on long term. Since we have not yet passed many days into the article writing contest, I suggest we rework upon preferred topics totally afresh (We can still keep the articles already created so far).

It will be very useful for us to take this opportunity to focus upon subjects more relevant to India, that too help the common citizen of India. It could be on health, transportation, essential entities such as elements in periodic tables, winners of national awards in literature, film, sports etc.

The better aspects of such articles are:

  • They will be of more permanent reference value.
  • They will be of use to more people (in India, in their own local language),
  • They can be showcased together in this contest which will help in comparing the quantity and quality produced in each language and thus assessing the level of accomplishment in each community.
  • Such a common list to all participating communities will also help harvesting maximum wikidata elements with more reliable and multilingual details.

If the above points are worth considering, I ask all users to support this suggestion and endorse the same here. If it is generally acceptable, we can generate a fresh list of potential articles, again not compulsory but much preferred). Individual communities may also choose to add or avoid entries to such a list.

As a precursor, I shall prepare a trial list under my user page, which, if suitable, may be adapted here by consensus. A proposed list may cover such topics as:

  • Academic Institutes and organisations in India for research and development
  • Chemical Elements
  • crops and Farming in India
  • Digital File formats
  • Diseases
  • Human anatomy
  • List of human evolution fossils
  • Minerals and metals
  • National awards and winners
  • National Parks of India
  • Nations of the world
  • Nobel Laureates
  • Notable Characters in Indian and Greek mythology
  • Notable women
  • Oscar award winning films and persons
  • Planets & stars
  • Rivers of India
  • Types of memory devices
  • Universities of India

Telugu Wikipedia's discussion about Community priority topics

[edit]

Hi Everyone,
There is a discussion initiated by Contest's Telugu Jury members regarding additional topics to streamline requests from participants on several talk pages and especially to come to consensus about priority of Community. This resulted following individual and community priority topics:

Individual requests

Telugu Wikipedians who are actively participating in this project listed out their requested categories of their choice, which are as follows:

  • User:Chaduvari:
    • List of Indian Armed forces and different wings
    • List of Modern weapons and missiles of the India
    • List of Wars and important battles that Republic of India fought
    • List of Wars and important battles fought by Britishers in India
    • Bilateral realtions of India with several countries
    • List of Scientific reaserch organizations of India
    • List of Indian Public Sector organizations
    • List of Astronomical articles
    • List of articles about Indus-valley Civilization
    • List of Rulers and Kingdoms of Ancient India
    • Archeology
    • Palientology
    • paleontology
  • User:JVRKPRASAD:
    • Hindu religion
    • Vegetarian cuisine
    • Indian Railways
  • User:Kvr.lohith:
    • Chemical compounds
    • Chemical elements
    • Physics articles
    • Astronomical articles
    • Andhra Pradesh Historical places
    • Mathamatics
  • User:స్వరలాసిక:
    • Telugu personalities and Telugu movies gained recognition in National and International level
    • Padma awardees
    • Indian movies which got National and International Movie awards
    • International level awardees in different fields (Indians should be priority)
Community priority
  1. Whole list on articles about Women: In earlier Thematic articles list (1700+ articles list) Content about Women is one of the 5 categories. Telugu Wikimedian User:Meena gayathri.s pointed out that whole list on articles about Women is more helpful to use this opportunity to bridge gender gap in most of the Indian language Wikipedias. She also pointed towards earlier efforts of Indian language Wikimedians to bridge gender gap as a context for this proposal, also warned that unknowingly articles improved/created for this contest may increase gender gap without such a separate list.
  2. Google Translation Project Articles: During 2009-11 Google run a paid machine translation project in Telugu Wikipedia popularly known as Google Translate project. This resulted over 1900 articles majority of which were under quality mammoth articles which were considered one of the quality threats to Telugu Wikipedia. Community made continous efforts to improve those articles and recently Telugu Wikimedia community ran 3 months long prioritization excersize to prioritize important articles out of this. Initially this project also selected those 1900 topics to increase readership by improving page requests and hits.

Please find discussion in Telugu Wikipedia here. I would like to request Organizers to consider above aspects while generating new lists of topics, on behalf of Telugu Wikipedia Community. --Pavan santhosh.s (talk) 13:31, 11 April 2018 (UTC) (On belhalf of Project Tiger Telugu Jury)Reply
