About topics for the Gujarati language[edit]

Hello, I want to sign up for upcoming Article Writing Content (March-May 2018). But I feel bad to tell that the topics given in the list seem useless to me. I am sceptical about the subjects you provided as most of them are not related to India or of Indian interest. For example, Battle of Gettysburg (who would be interested in Gujarati article on a battle of American Civil War?). A large number of articles in the list are American celebrities and films. I have not heard about many of them even though I watch Hollywood films and interested in US politics. It is very unlikely that a Gujarati reader would be interested in such topics. It seems strange that these topics are listed as most searched Gujarati topics. Some articles in the list already have Gujarati articles. For example, Makar Sankranti.

I am interested in writing articles on educational subjects like Physics, Chemistry, Quantum Mechanics, Particle Physics, Philosophy, Western Literature and its Theory, Indian Literature and its theory, Psychology, History etc. The lists you provided ignore these educational topics as well topics our local language (Gujarati) users most likely interested. I think educational topics can be more helpful to readers and students alike. I, myself being a Chemistry student, know that how helpful it can be to students so I want to contribute in these educational subjects. If a contest is focused on these and other educational subjects, it will be very helpful to people. I would be contributing more to these subjects due to my access to public libraries and having a large educational library. I would also provide other community members through recently opened resource exchange in Gujarati Wikipedia. So I kindly request to create a new list of India centred topics, topics of local language reader interest and educational topics for the Article Writing Contest. I would like to invite members of Gujarati Wikipedia community, @Nizil Shah:, @KartikMistry:, @Aniket: and @Dsvyas: for inputs. Thank you. --Gazal world (talk) 13:15, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with Gazal world here. For me also, most of the topics seem picked from a popular article on enwiki which most likely won't be popular in Indic wikis. --KartikMistry (talk) 13:27, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I also find most topics in list useless for the readers of Indic languages. --Nizil Shah (talk) 13:43, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Gazal world:, thanks for your feedback. We will try if we can provide more topics on the subjects you have expressed interest. For articles that already exist, the community can consider expanding the content and improving the quality. --Ravi (talk) 13:22, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with the points @Gazal world: has raised and thank him for bringing this to my attention. There are many articles listed here, which aready exist in gu.wiki and around 90% are non-relevant to Gujarati readers as a priority. Of course, one can argue that all articles must be in all languages, but we should make our priorities sorted first.
@RAyyakkannu (WMF):, instead of adding more topics here in this list of non-useful topics, we should aim to get list sourced from more reliable searches/data. I don't know what crieteria were used to determine that these are most searched topics in Gujarati, whether that was any on wiki research or google analytics, etc. To me, the list here seems redundant, we need to rather create a new list for Gujarati. You might want to consider checking with other languages as well on what they feel for the topics listed.--DhavalTalk 13:54, 21 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
There is more feedback from other communities here. Let us continue the discussion there. --Ravi (talk) 21:24, 2 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Add Topics for Kannada[edit]

Hi, Organisers, I would suggest few articles for 'The Project Tiger' which as a regular user of wikipedia would love to read in Kannada:

Could you add please add these topics to Kannada section. So interested editors, including me, could provide their inputs.

TIGER Tigers are self sufficient, courageous predators that know what they want and know how to get it. This makes them quite formidable in competition.

WHERE THEY ARE FOUND Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Russia, and Thailand.

WHY THEY ARE IMPORTANT As well as being a majestic animal, in their role as top predator, tigers keep their habitat healthy by stabilizing the populations of quick breeding grazing animals such as deer. These grass eaters would overgraze and create imbalance in the habitat if their numbers went unchecked.

HOW THEY ARE THREATENED BY ILLEGAL TRADE Poaching is the leading threat to wild tigers. It is believed that there are many medicinal beliefs attached to the body parts particularly tiger bone.

HOW YOU CAN HELP learn more about how many animals, like tigers, are a symbol of the health of the forests they inhabit; these same forests secure water, mitigate climate change, and provide a host of natural resources required for healthy human populations. So when we protect magnificent species we are also ensuring our own health and well-being.

CITES Listing: Tigers have been included in Appendix I since the beginning of the Convention in 1975, with the exception of Panthera tigtis altaica (Siberian Tiger), which was listed in Appendix II. All tiger sub-species were included in Appendix I in 1987. International commercial trade in specimens of tigers is prohibited. Pawanparihar007 (talk) 10:32, 7 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Onsite edit-a-thon[edit]

As part of the Project Tiger Writing Contest, we welcome communities and user groups to play an active role in outreach.

One way we see this happening is to conduct onsite edit-a-thons in various cities inviting the local communities to gather for a day or two and write articles for the Project Tiger contest. We hope that face-to-face onsite edit-a-thons might be a good way for the community members to meet and work on this contest. If you are planning to have an onsite edit-a-thon for Project Tiger, we would be glad to financial and programmatic support. We would be excited to learn more creative ways of encouraging participation in this contest.

Please contact tito at cis-india.org for more details.

Also please create a new level 3 section below in this format:

Adding Topic in Marathi Language (Musical Art Form Kirtan)[edit]

Hello, I am very happy to know about the Article Writing Contest and I am very keen on participating. But I did not find the suitable Topic for the subject on which I am working. I am working on a research project for an ancient art form known as 'Kirtan' (कीर्तन) in Marathi. It is a musical art form which involves reciting and describing a spiritual or religious story. More can be read on the already existing page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirtan I want to add more information and some reference links (on which I am working) where one can get detail information about the kirtan format and how to perform it. I want to add all this information in Marathi.

hinduism or hindutav[edit]

Hindu is a religion which have originated in India.Hinduism is the basic feeling or believe of anybody towards their religion. If I am a Hindu ,I will support hinduism or hindutva ,I will advertise the propoganda of my religion. If I will fail in doing that chances are there when people will through me out of my religion. In India Everyone has an ideology ,on that idelogy they move on. Shree Adityanath Yogi is Chiefminister of India's biggest state 'Uttar Pradesh' .once he told in Assembly , "I am a hindu but I will celebrate Eid". From this statement he clears his hinduism. In India there are many political organisation like RSS,VHP etc Their work is that they spread the propoganda of Hinduism ,somewhere it leads to rise a communal fights but it's okay. Like Swami Vivekananda has delivered his speech in Chicago about the Hinduism. Not only Indians many of people who belongs to other country they change their religion to Hindu. Think of a man coming far away land and greeting them as their sisters and brothers. They appreciate him because they are aware of what hinduism is ,how it functions, how it will be going to change your rest of life.

To deal with your kid is an art and only the mother is blessed with this ability. Kids are sensitive and only the mother can understand and deal with it. She has the knowledge about her kid and only she will be able to understand the child's needs without a single word said. She cares about her kid like no others do. Only the mother can deal with their kids during their strange behaviour and changes. How to handle kids in different situations can be explained as follows;

Font support missing, so Project Tiger a wasted effort[edit]

I am on Firefox 54.0 (64-bit) on Lubuntu 16.10, and despite being a software developer, for the life of me I could not figure out in 10 long minutes how to get the Kannada writing on some of your Wiki pages into human-readable form, all I see are squares for each letter, with weird junk in it. I ran into some pages which claimed to provide comprehensive support for language fonts, but they did no such thing.

If reading Kannada on wiki pages is so difficult for a software person, is a regular reader going to bother reading them? Why then bother creating the pages?

Can there not be put in place some automatic font support by Wikipedia?

I think your Project Tiger is a waste until people can see Wiki pages in Indian languages just as easily they can see Wiki pages in English, i.e., with NO additional steps of installing fonts and so on.

Urdu Language[edit]

Project Tiger Editathon: my comments[edit]

I applaud this initiative. I suggested something like it (though without the ₹, which I do think a jolly good idea) about two years ago, in response to a Wikimedia questionnaire.

However, the last time I looked, there was more than one country in the Subcontinent. Languages other than those commonly spoken in India also spring to mind (for example, Nepali, Sinhala and Urdu).

I try to fix bad links to DAB pages. I have to say, that Interwiki links to articles in languages of the Subcontinent are mostly useless. They should be world-class, but they are not :-( You should lead; the rest of us should follow. I have seen far too many examples of near-incomprehensible English articles which might have made perfect sense if the editor had posted in his or her home language instead.

From what I've seen of this Editathon, it is somewhat high-minded. I have seen articles suggested for translation which were specialist even for a native English speaker, and which could only be understood by someone who already understood English really well. What is the point of that?

There is a glaring omission in this Editathon: cricket. What is the best way to get new, young, editors from the Subcontinent involved in Wiki? Why, to make sure that their favourite teams and players in the IPL have proper write-ups in their own language(s)! All IPL teams and players are notable under WP:NCRICKET, so new editors don't have to worry about that issue. The English-language articles are generally OK and well-sourced, but there are some shocking examples of missing articles in other languages. Translation should not be difficult. (I could also include several examples of now-retired greats, but I'll only include one. Nari Contractor: played for Gujarat, captained India, no Wiki article in Gujariti.)

While on the subject of translations, Template:Translated page seems to have no equivalent in Odiya and Telugu at least. Well, it should. Narky Blert (talk) 02:57, 24 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I've just watched this. Although excruciating for an England supporter to watch (I remember that Test) - why do those India cricketers not have Wiki articles in every Indian language? They should, no question about it. Narky Blert (talk) 23:37, 24 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Caste names of Indian people[edit]

I had been writing articles regularly in the Tamil language since 2013. But I felt that some admins whom I thought are fundamentalists or even extremists, were interfering in my articles in a way that I had to find additional resources like time and money to carry on the discussions, apart from creating articles. Of course there are friends who encouraged me. But I felt the negative forces were overwhelming and I had to reduce my input.
I wish to point out one issue here.
I think a few years after independence political leaders in Tamil Nadu State requested people to stop using the caste name with their own names. Almost all Tamilian people adhered to that request. Therefore, after 1970 or so we do not see people using the caste name. However, people who hailed from earlier decades carried the caste name with their own names and therefore popular names included the caste name.
I was writing articles in Tamil on people who excelled in the field of Carnatic music. Most of the Carnatic musicians of 19th and early 20th century used caste names with their own names. It was like part of their own names and they were popular by that name. One Admin moved my article on a musician changing the title with the caste name removed (Dwaram Venkataswamy) saying caste names are not allowed in Tamil Wikipedia. There was a lengthy discussion about this on the article's talk page. The irony is, while the English language article is titled Dwaram Venkataswamy Naidu, the Tamil language article is titled without the word Naidu. The person described in the article is not even a Tamilian. After this, I voluntarily removed the caste names in articles that had been created by me up to that time. I stopped writing any further articles about musicians. I continue writing uncontroversial articles such as ones on old Tamil films. Most of the time when I create an article in English, I either create or develop existing articles in Tamil.--Uksharma3 (talk) 12:29, 5 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Uksharma3: This is not right place for the issue you are talking about. However, User:Titodutta, User:Ravidreams and User:Krishna Chaitanya Velaga can guide you. This is not right thing going on on Tamil Wikipedia. We should put full name in article. --Gazal world (talk) 16:08, 6 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Gazal world: Thank you for your observation and references. I brought the issue here because, as they want more articles to be written in Indian languages, some people like me may face restrictions like this on Indian languages Wiki. I think the Admins of any language Wiki should not enforce their own policies and make alterations in articles created by others.--Uksharma3 (talk) 02:40, 7 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Uksharma3: Thanks for reaching out here. As far English Wikipedia is concerned, we don't name the titles on the basis of caste/religion/region etc. All the article titles are abide by WP:AT. I'm sorry I am not aware of the the situation on Tamil Wikipedia, there may be having different guidelines within the community. I am sure Ravi can give a comment on this. Pinging another judge as well @Dineshkumar Ponnusamy: Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talkmail) 08:27, 7 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for bringing it to my attention! The issue is already in a discussion and the policies of each language is different. It cannot be the same, creation of new policies about naming the person is still in progress. There is no point in complaining about the title in the common page like Project Tiger, where it didn't explain the scenario and background of the issue. Will take this into consideration. --Dineshkumar Ponnusamy (talk) 16:56, 15 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
