Translate translation instructions!

Hey everyone who translated the pages on the campaign: @Rukasuoribera, Mauricio V. Genta, Billinghurst, Mickey Mystique, Camelia.boban, Тимерхан, Worrida, and Omotecho:. We are experimenting with a call to action to translation for two key articles: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. We created to pages with instructions on how to translate using the translation tool WikiForHumanRights/List/Universal_Declaration_of_Human_Rights and WikiForHumanRights/List/Convention_on_the_Rights_of_the_Child. Right to Live

Please add a campaign around the right to live and have a home, without fear of destruction of self, family, belongings, and hometown; or of being imprisoned or forcibly moved. There is much to be captured and written about this. Calling this the triple planetary crisis, given the growing # and scale of wars displacing millions [which of course has tremendous knock-on effects that include these three crises], seems a bit out of proportion. –SJ talk  20:20, 14 April 2022 (UTC)

What is Wikimedia NOT about?

It seems that Wikimedia is trying to cover more and more, and one wonder what is it not about? With this it seems to quickly end up as some mix of a NGO or a leftist organisation. Does my negative reaction mean that I am against fighting gender violence, construction of dams or what ever good cause there is - or for that sake human rights?

Not so, but we have political parties and loads of other organisations for that. If Wikimedia keep on expanding its reach, it may end up turning away so many contributors that our original projects will suffer. So I, for one, will go on contributing to Wikipedia, what ever interest I have in other causes I consider good, I will support somewhere else. Ulflarsen (talk) 09:14, 17 April 2023 (UTC)

Inclined to agree. This does feel quite close to the political to me. On the other hand, wikipedia's base aim of acces to knowledge might seem political to some. I don't think "everything is political" or that everything should be political. I guess I think some things are more political than others.Talpedia (talk) 01:19, 3 May 2023 (UTC)

Slightly concerned that this might border on the political

The aim of the #WikiForHumanRights campaign is to make sure that everyone has access to neutral, fact-based, and current information around our Right to a Healthy Environment.

If this said, "the concept of a Right to a Health Environment", or even "our rights" to a healthy environment I would agree. The first implies the right is not necessarily fundamental morally, the second that it might need to be balanced against other rights.

The right to a healthy environment is a legal right acknowledged by the UN (The human right to a clean, healthy and sustainable environment), but also a way of connecting human rights and the triple planetary crisis we face: climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss.

I don't necessarily think wikipedia or wikimedia should view positively enacting UN commitments as its aim. The UN in just another policy organisation - influenced by trends in policy, some of its suggestions get ratified and which point they have some democratic legitimacy.

As the UN Environmental Program highlighted: we need to make Peace with Nature, and human rights need to be at the center of the solutions.

There seems to be a bit of a "naturalistic fallacy" baked into that. Does the loss of biodiverity represent a loss? Yes. Do environmental changes caused by humans put lives at risk? Yes. Do we need to make "Peace with Nature"? Entirely less clear.

The role of Wikipedia has never mattered more than now. Everyone everywhere needs access to information about how climate change or environmental degradation impacts their lives.

I can't disagree that this is a legitimate aim of wikipedia.

We can increase knowledge about the healthy natural systems upon which all people rely for the water they drink, the air they breathe, the food they eat, and the resources they need.

Again it feels like there is a bit of a naturalistic fallacy here. I imagine mosquitos and malaria are part of this "healthy natural system". I think we happy that we have eradicated malaria from many areas. Food arguably cannot be a natural system due to the size of the population and the need for the Haber process. Personally I suspect that part of the protection of the envirronment lays in separating the food system from the environmental system to reduce damage to biodiversity - with things like vertical farming coming to mind.

With #WikiForHumanRights this year, we are focusing on how local communities are impacted by the most pressing environmental issues in their context including the triple planetary crises identified by the UN of climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution.

I would very clearly point at a potentially trade off between climate change and pollution. Should we understand all of those things and have them well documented on wikipedia? Yes. Should the tiple crises be considered an individual entity to fight, I am rather less convinced.

Information plays a critical role in our shared ability to not only understand these interconnected crises but also mitigate the causes and adapt for a healthy future for all.

I don't think the conflation of "sustainable" and "healthy" is true, or a good idea.

Fulfilling the human right to a healthy environment empowers those most affected by environmental harms such as pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss to defend the environment, participate in decision-making, and access justice and human rights protection. Filling gaps on Wikipedia about these topics, helps the public make the thousands of decisions needed to address these pressing environment crises.

I can't really disagree with this aim. I do disagree with much of the early justification. I think that people have a right to a healthy environment, and a right to access to a natural environment, I don't think these are the same rights; I think these rights trade off against other rights. I think the conflation of healthy, sustainable and natural is both incorrect and problematic given that an a solution maintaining biodiversity and health may involve doing things that are thoroughly "unnatural" in order to protect nature and biodiversity from our demands for health.

Is this tiresome political discussion? Yes... but that's the problem with pulling campaigns about rights onto wikipedia. A reader of this comment might like to review en:Ecofascism and en:Eco-socialism to understand some of the concerns here. Talpedia (talk) 01:47, 3 May 2023 (UTC)

There is a discrepancy between the current claimed scores and the eplained scoring system. Is 1 point awarded for each 2000 bytes of content or translation, or 1 point for each translated article? How is currently claimed high scores explained? Alperen (talk) 18:53, 4 May 2023 (UTC)

Droit à un environnement sein

Comment investir dans l'environnement pour le préserver ou le protéger contre toute forme de menace? L'environnement a été toutefois souriant et toujours ouvert à toute chose sans exception. De ce fait, il faut le protéger en lui donnant de la valeur qu'il mérite de la part de notre humanité contemporaine. Au regard des nombreuses et nouvelles menaces à l'égard de l'environnement. Il nous faut mettre en œuvre toutes les politiques relatives à sa bonne gestion.
