Wikipedia 15 graphic assets[edit]

I wonder if there are plans to create Wikipedia 15 graphic assets. I think the ones from wikipedia 10 could easily be "updated" or be used as inspiration. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikipedia_10 Usgin updated assets from wikipedia 10 would not give an image of big or radical changes, but, on the other hand, it would give a sense of continuity. Of course a mix of the updated graphics with newer graphics would likely also better represent progress in the last 5 years. Regards --Basquetteur (talk) 13:33, 11 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Basquetteur! New graphics for the 15th anniversary are on the way. We'll be sharing them on these pages soon. Thank you! heather walls (talk) 18:16, 11 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Basquetteur :) I'm excited to let you know the marks are now available here! We look forward to seeing how people use them, remix them, and make them their own. Katherine (WMF) (talk) 00:17, 13 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Is it necessary that icons not included in the basic set should share the same style with those in the basic set? (I rose the question as some Taiwanese Wikimedians have feedbacks that there're no suitable localised icons to use in such an event; Hong Kong has a similar situation given the current socio-political polarisation.) Thanks, --Spring Roll Conan ( Teahouse | Contributions ) 12:29, 13 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Instructions for creating your own images/icons
@春卷柯南: It would be ideal if they would, but there's quite a large degree of freedom here! You can see the suggestions in this image, also on the right. Thanks! JSutherland (WMF) (talk) 12:45, 13 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the delightful set of marks! I already wonder how they look like on a birthday cake... As for Wikipedia10 it would make sense to attach a slogan like "10 years of contributions by people like you" to these icons. --Pakeha (talk) 16:17, 13 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia 15 Translations[edit]

Hi! After Mass message requesting translation for the Mark Announcement I have been browsing Wikipedia 15 pages and I have found that some of them are not translatable. Any chance to have it done? It seems to me a good idea to have at least the entry page in several languages. --Oriciu (talk) 03:54, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Oriciu: Sorry for the delay in replying! Which pages would you like marked up? I can get that done for you :) Joe Sutherland (WMF) (talk) 16:20, 20 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@JSutherland (WMF): If Oriciu doesn't mind, I can give a list of pages/strings which need to be translated:
  1. The Wikipedia 15 menu at Template:Wikipedia 15 menu;
  2. The "XX days until Wikipedia 15" countdown at the top of Wikipedia 15;
  3. The events list at Wikipedia 15/Events/List (being able to translate the locations and continents);
  4. Media page at Wikipedia 15/Media;
  5. Being able to use localized images in the sections "How to customize the mark" and "Using the mark for other materials" at Wikipedia 15/Material;
  6. Translatable page title at Wikipedia 15/Mark.
Optional:
  1. All the "Wikipedia 15 events in [Country or Continent name]" categories (Root: Category:Wikipedia 15 events);
  2. The event pages, for example: Wikipedia 15/Events/Korea.
I know it's a lot of content :( , but if all of those could be translated, non-English speakers would have a better experience. Thanks! Eduardogobi (talk) 22:37, 20 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@JSutherland (WMF): Many of the pages in W15 became translatable just after my request, but Eduardogobi put together a good list of items that will make a difference if translated. Regards. --Oriciu (talk) 20:24, 22 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Oriciu: @Eduardogobi: Thanks both. I will aim to get these marked up tomorrow. Joe Sutherland (WMF) (talk) 23:56, 22 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Press release[edit]

Hi, there is a press release somewhere (to translate and adapt for differents events)?--Patafisik (talk) 09:50, 18 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Patafisik: Not just yet, I will speak with some of the Comms team at the WMF and get learn status of this. Joe Sutherland (WMF) (talk) 16:20, 20 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I keep waiting for the press release.--Patafisik (talk) 09:09, 21 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Anne-Laure Prévost: @Psychoslave: I hope the press release will arrive soon, within 10 days, before Christmas and holidays. We need the time to translate it in French and to send it to the press. I wish to send it also to monthly reviews, not only daily or weekly newspapers/magazines, if is it possible. Thanks--Patafisik (talk) 10:14, 2 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Patafisik: As soon as we receive it, I'll start translating it ! Anne-Laure WMFr (talk) 10:06, 4 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm interested in seeing this press release, but I don't use META too much... Can someone "ping" me when it's released?--MisterSanderson (talk) 19:28, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Patafisik: @Anne-Laure WMFr: and @MisterSanderson:,

The Wikimedia Foundation Communications team just shared a press release template for Wikipedia 15, sample press release, and a few tips for using press releases under the media tab. The template and sample press release can be localized, remixed, and translated in any way that works best for you and your community. Feel free to use them as you see fit. If you have any questions, feel free to ping me. Thanks! SLien (WMF) (talk) 17:56, 18 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

error: Unrecognized punctuation character ""[edit]

Please fix this - Wikipedia_15/bn --Aftabuzzaman (talk) 17:55, 20 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Aftabuzzaman: Looking into this! Thanks for letting me know. Joe Sutherland (WMF) (talk) 23:56, 22 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@JSutherland (WMF): Same. still showing error --Aftabuzzaman (talk) 14:40, 25 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Aftabuzzaman: So this is actually because the Bengali numerals are causing a problem. I'm not sure how to fix this. I will see if this may be removed for the Bengali page. Sorry for the inconvenience :( Joe Sutherland (WMF) (talk) 18:07, 25 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Aftabuzzaman: I have made a messy change which should fix this in the short term (it just hides it for Bengali). See also phabricator:T119705 for tracking on this. Joe Sutherland (WMF) (talk) 13:54, 26 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Twitter avatar[edit]

A male-only avatar on [1], really? A 15 yo is well into puberty, ok, but do we really need to stress the Adam's apple so much. Nemo 18:19, 23 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

That's Amelia Earhart, so... Joe Sutherland (WMF) (talk) 19:59, 24 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect format[edit]

I see <translate> tags in both templates. Maybe a translationadmin can help.

Adding material for Strasbourg[edit]

Hello, I just uploaded a SVG skyline of Strasbourg. Could someone take care of integrating it in the event material? --Psychoslave (talk) 18:56, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A skyline of Strasbourg
It's out of standard. It's not a "line" (forms are not plenty), and he needs a resize (see Wikipedia_15/Material#How to customize the mark).--5.50.126.192 19:18, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Top contributors[edit]

Hello everyone. Just a small suggestion on this milestone. Can the foundation pick up top 10 editors, to 10 article creators etc and present them personalized mementos for their tireless contribution to WP? Comments and support invited. Cheers,AKS.9955 (talk) 16:53, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I completely Support your observation.They have done so much hard work without asking any thing in return.These Momentos will remind them of our Wikipedia Community and they will also feel that their hard work has paid off.Thanks.--Param Mudgal (talk) 18:48, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

How about top 15? TaylorMoore2 (talk) 22:15, 15 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, top 15 is fine, but how this "top" will be formed? --Ochilov (talk) 11:46, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
AKS.9955: Any interest to take this forward? --Saqib (talk) 12:04, 10 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Saqib/AKS.9955, a reward based on edit count has the potential for opening up friction around en:WP:EDITCOUNT#"Quality, not quantity". Perhaps there are other metrics that it might be possible to use to highlight the opportunity for new contributions to join? ~~

Perhaps each WikiProject in each project could nominate their top contributors. --NaBUru38 (talk) 14:36, 11 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

St. Pete, Florida[edit]

It's a shame that St. Pete, where Wikipedia servers were once located (and where Wikimedia was founded), is excluded from the party. Just saying. Yeah I could organize one, but it's not my forte. TrueCRaysball | #RaysUp 02:19, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

There are no exclusions ;) If someone from St. Pete wants to organise one they're free to do so!! — foxj 00:42, 17 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Days until Wikipedia 15 text[edit]

If a translated text goes into 2 rows the counter looks ugly, see for example Wikipedia_15/fi. --Stryn (talk) 10:06, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Stryn: Fixed it. Changes are not shown in Wikipedia_15/fi though... yet? No idea if it's a caching problem or something with the translating system. Maybe my edit has to be flagged somehow. --WikiKiwi 19:13, 20 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I marked your changes for translation, and now it shows up also on that page. --Stryn (talk) 19:25, 20 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect! how did you do that? Should this have effect on other languages too? --WikiKiwi 19:40, 20 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I can do that since I'm a translation administrator. Fuzzybot updated all those translation pages, see this. --Stryn (talk) 19:48, 20 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Tracked in Phabricator:
Task T48716Cool, I asked since e.g. Wikipedia_15/it and Wikipedia_15/fr (and others) are still outdated. --WikiKiwi 19:58, 20 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Done now. I forgot that the translate extension requires a dummy edit sometimes so it can update all translation pages. Stryn (talk)

Easier licencing for uploading pictures on articles.[edit]

(Radhatanaya (talk) 03:18, 11 January 2016 (UTC)) I find difficulties in uploading pics, taken by me in kannada wikipedia, and as well as English wikipedia. When I uploaded the pic of King George the Vth, in the article entitled "Chatrapati Shivaji Vastusangrahalaya, Mumbai, it was deleted. Thank God, Some how in my Wikipedia article of the same name in kannada, till now the pic is not deleted. This is my very sad experience. I write under the name Rangakuvara in English wikipedia.[reply]

It is such a harrow to upload pics in wiki articles.Is it considered illegal to take photos from websites and upload them here?Besides,what kind of permission do we seek from the "author" to upload them.Is there any direct licencing tag also?SlimShady1017 (talk) 17:37, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, SlimShady1017, this talkpage is for questions about celebrating Wikipedia 15th forum. If you have any problems, it is better to write on info-en@wikimedia.org. Thanks. --Ochilov (talk) 17:50, 16 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

how to translate to tagalog?[edit]

i clicked on "translate this" then got lost. please {ping} me with instructions (or link to instructions, which i'm also too dumb to find). - thanks & mabuhay! LeoRomero (talk) 18:14, 12 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

LeoRomero, Step 1: Click on "Translate this page" at the top of the page, Step 2: Click on the "Translate to: English" drop down menu on the top right, step 3: Search for "Tagalog" in the search window. Once you've selected the language, the translatable messages will be listed on the left hand side, and boxes to type the Tagalog text will appear to the right. Thanks![edit]

Thanks for putting Wikipedia15 on the map and on the schedule. I would not have know, or thought anything of it, but your page inspired me to get a cake and try to get together some local wikipedians. We must be everywhere but are surprisingly hard to find. It was good to talk to someone to whom transclusion would be exciting, never mind made sense. Two bits of feedback... I put the local event on the local reddit, and it triggered a bit of a troll fest about the fundraising articles. They are causing a lot of ill will. And, my discussion with this other wikipedian brought out that both of us are a bit mystified by this new wikidata and how it deals with translations... you may loose a few contributors over that. Just sayin... Anyway, again, thanks for getting this started! Tenbergen (talk) 06:46, 16 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Updates on Chinese translation of the CentralNotice[edit]

Today I revert some of the edits of another user on meta, as s/he attempted to convert texts in Traditional Chinese into Simplified Chinese, which is strictly prohibited in Chinese Wikipedia without a good rationale. Also, with his revision, the particle 「吧」 is removed, making the Chinese version of the sentence "Tell us what Wikipedia means to you." terse and demanding (in Chinese a sentence with verb followed by noun clause is sometimes seen in sentences with a purpose of ordering and advice). My revision is reviewed but yet to publish. I would like to ask if any sysops can help with this (as well as other unpublished translations related to WP15). Thanks, Spring Roll Conan ( Teahouse | Contributions ) 14:35, 16 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Done. --Stryn (talk) 20:37, 16 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Twitter only?[edit]

I received several comments via OTRS that requiring Twitter to give feedback was not the most convenient, nor the most open, approach. I tend to agree; it seems strange that telling about Wikipedia, which popularized free collaborative editing, requires an account with a proprietary service. Huon (talk) 18:01, 19 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

N'importe quoi :-([edit]

It's all about the money ... advertisement in Wikipedia. How it all begins.[edit]

On https://15.wikipedia.org is a link called contributors ... you think the autors of course? Hahaha ... silly. of course not. ... There are the important people and companies. The ones who really contribute. ... The big sponsors donators. ...Sicherlich Post 21:03, 25 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
