Wikimedia Argentina (legally, the Civil Association of Wikimedia Argentinia) is the independent civil association affiliated to the Wikimedia Foundation that serves as a local chapter in Argentina. Founded in 2007, its aim is to run programs and initiatives that promote citizens' use of and participation in Wikimedia projects.

Wikimedia Argentina promotes education and access to culture, generates training spaces on Internet Human Rights and works to incorporate more diverse voices that represent the reality and perspective of Latin America, especially Argentina, in the construction of free knowledge.

After a year of informal meetings, the inaugural meeting of Wikimedia Argentina took place on 1 September 2007, with 28 founding members. During the creation of the chapter they drew up statute that were approved by the assembly and the first board of directors was elected. On 11 December 2007 it was recognised as an official chapter by the Wikimedia Foundation Board.

Projects

Open Culture and Open Knowledge Program

The Open Culture and Open Knowledge Program is a collaborative effort with cultural institutions and organizations to democratize and make visible Argentina's history, culture and science through the digitization and preservation of the local cultural heritage. Through free culture practices, it places special emphasis on the valuation of historically underrepresented heritage, incorporating a plurality of voices in collaborative knowledge building.

Cooperation and inclusion Program

The Cooperation and Inclusion Program seeks to create a collaborative space to make knowledge accessible, working with volunteer communities and civil society organisations. It seeks to identify content gaps and incorporate a diversity of voices and perspectives that ensure the equal inclusion and representation of all identities in Wikimedia projects.

Education and Human Rights Programme

The Education and Human Rights Program designs proposals for the dissemination and collaborative creation of knowledge from a pedagogical and human rights perspective. It aims to promote Wikimedia projects as educational and memory building tools in digital territories.
