This page outlines the Wikimedia Foundation Communications Department's activities at Wikimania 2016.

Overview

The Communications Department will be attending Wikimania 2016 to provide capacity building, collect input, increase awareness, and network with community members.

Activities

The department will be facilitating these workshops and discussions:

• Misconceptions about the Wikimedia movement, and what can we do about them
• Crafting awesome central notice banners
• Communications meetup

The department is also participating in these activities:

• Popolo comunitario
• Communications Hackathon

Objectives

With its participation in the conference, the department hopes to achieve these objectives:

• Help community projects expand their communications capacity

• Network with members of the community

• Collect input on Wikimedia messaging and branding

• Collect input on New Readers project

• Engage community members in Wikimedia Foundation's digital media efforts

• Discuss and identify advocacy needs of affiliates - in particular what tools affiliates would find helpful

• Introduce and collect feedback on Communications Resource Center

• Increase awareness of department activities and efforts to support the community

• Discuss initiatives the department is considering

Social media

The department plans these social media projects during the conference:

• Introduce community members interested in social media to the movement’s active and helpful Facebook group.
• Engage community members via the @wikimania Twitter handle and #wikimania2016 hashtag
• Capture faces of Wikipedians in selfie photos via Communications and Community Engagement booths and the #wearewikimedia hashtag
• Narrate the conference with three Wikimedia Blog posts: Coming from around the world; Sights and sounds of Wikimania; and conference wrap-up.
