Discussion

[edit]

We need that banner for the entire month of March in my opinion. Anthere (talk) 15:21, 15 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Why would you prefer the whole month Anthere, could you elaborate? Ciell (talk) 19:00, 15 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
My understanding of the History Month is that it is a full month. That would be my main argument. Anthere (talk)
Well, yes, but this banner is for the day. The 'month' is only celebrated in English speaking countries (according to the talk page here), and the banner agenda is busy with WLF and WLA and other campaigns running just before or at the same time even. I'd rather focus on the 'day' with a ten-day banner, and any 'month'-activities can off course be mentioned. Maybe the English Wikipedia can agree on turning on a site notice for this, but I don't really see why we should triple the time this banner will be shown. Ciell (talk) 20:04, 16 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Got it. You are right. Anthere (talk) 21:51, 16 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I would also like to implement sub-banners for certain geographically-linked events, as we have done for Wiki Loves Fashion in the New York City area, and during other campaigns.--Pharos (talk) 18:58, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

landingpage for all gender gap/Wikigap 2021 activities & banner preview I'm waiting for some one to add a translation-button to the banner, and then we can go live. Ciell (talk) 14:47, 1 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Figured it out and turned it on. Ciell (talk) 15:04, 1 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell: Some parts of the banner don't seem to be transparent while other are. This leads to some unwanted depictions on other skins Monobook, as this one. Do you think that it's worth to fix it? Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 19:12, 1 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@DerHexer: If you can, please: go ahead! Seddon created the banner for us, I personally do not have the knowledge to fix this. Ciell (talk) 19:16, 1 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

At an online wikimeeting yesterday, two users asked me whether this banner could be of smaller height. Ciell, can we do that? --Ата (talk) 08:38, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Ата: I cannot, I am afraid I'll break things. But if you are confident: feel free, go ahead! Ciell (talk) 16:30, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell I was confident at first but..no Ата (talk) 17:09, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Central Notice admin comments

[edit]
@Ciell: there have been reports that this banner has a defect when users have monobook, example (notice it is overrunning the top of page controls). This was reported on enwiki by @Eurohunter:. Would you please review the markup? Thank you, — xaosflux Talk 14:53, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Seddon: (who is mentioned above in the banner markup discussion). — xaosflux Talk 14:58, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Martin Urbanec: (who recently worked on banner). — xaosflux Talk 19:26, 5 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Xaosflux Thanks for the ping. The only reason I edited this banner is to disable it for cswiki (replacing it with a local version), plus decreasing fourth a day to only twice a day.
By a quick look, I'm unable to find how the banner affects it exactly, but it indeed does. Adding div.pBody ul {overflow: hidden;} to the banner code would probably fix it, but that's a hack, not a fix. Martin Urbanec (talk) 19:32, 5 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
See if the issue is fixed now--Sakretsu (炸裂) 19:50, 5 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for hopefully fixing the banner-error Martin Urbanec. I'm also okay with twice a day, but you already set it to low-priority and now Xaosflux even decreased it to twice every 48 hours.
Considering the many, many activities and initiatives that are joining efforts for International Women Day, this all together to me is unreasonable strict. This not only effects the English Wikipedia, but many other projects as well. This banner was set up to join forces for all the diferent events that are being organised within the movement around the 8th of March, as well as to prevent banners from colliding or people having to 'compete' about the banner space (wikigap vs gendergap vs art + feminism vs women in red etc). The banner does not run for the whole month of March (though individual banners after the tenth may have their own settings), this is why I choose a (imho already low) diet of twice every 12 hours. Please agree with me that for at least untill the 8th, which is our 'big day', aka International Womens Day, the previous banner diet can be restored, at least partial for twice per 24 hours and with a normal weight. Ciell (talk) 20:10, 5 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell: This is preventing those who have actually seen the banner, and dismissed it from constantly being bombarded by it - multiple times a day. I think that twice a day, every day, for each editor is very excessive already and don't want to drive people to disabling all CN's as the "easy" way to avoid banner overload. I also think that twice every other day is also excessive but was trying to only make a marginal increase. Will leave for others to comment. — xaosflux Talk 20:17, 5 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Xaosflux: Would a good alternative according to you be to remove the diet for the next three days, so that users can close it and it does not reoccur after they have dismissed it? IWD is on Moday, I would really want the banner to be up on that day specifically, but also this upcoming weekend since many online events are being held. Ciell (talk) 21:28, 5 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell: I reset it to 86400, perhaps we can slow it back down after Monday while it runs out. — xaosflux Talk 22:02, 5 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Ciell (talk) 16:25, 6 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell IIRC, setting it to low only gives preference to local banners, it shouldn't affect how frequently it actually appears. Or am i missing something? Also ping @Seddon (WMF) Martin Urbanec (talk) 20:25, 5 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I thought it might mean the banner is shown less frequently, but it it only means it gives preference to local banners (how does the software know this?, I'm fine with this seting. Ciell (talk) 16:25, 6 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Two thoughts... 1) as Ciell is asking... how does the software know a banner is a local banner versus a banner is not a local banner ? 2) more generally, could there be a place where some human words describe exactly the impact of those options ? Low, normal, high, emergency; diet/no diet; 2 views/4 views per cycle etc. It strikes me that those conversations come over and over again because users do not fully understand the impact of each choice. Presumably administrators do, so could they actually share this knowledge with us ? Anthere (talk)
I don't think we have this all specified, but I can put this on my to do list. Ciell (talk) 08:12, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I am afraid I have a little conflict of interest there, as locally we are running the 150 anniversary of the Comnmune of Paris on Fr-Wiki too... So I dont know what to say because I dont understand the implications ː/ Nattes à chat (talk) 19:12, 7 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure what to tell you. I live in France. I would consider seeing a banner about the anniversary of the Commune of Paris on fr wiki quite logical. Instead, on French Wikipedia, I see a banner about a writing article contest to write about Cultural Diplomacy in Ukraine (I have nothing against Ukraine. Nor against Cultural Diplomacy. But to be honest... being French... living in France... Commune anniversary is more likely to interest me than Ukraine Diplomacy. But no idea which one would be global and which one would be local...). Anthere (talk)
  • Could we turn on the banner for non-registered readers specifically for the one day of March 8, which is the actual International Women's Day? This would be a way to reach new people at a very relevant (and limited) time, who have not been exposed to the banner at all previously.--Pharos (talk) 23:23, 7 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • I support all the other requests to increase the visibility of the International Women's Day banner, and to make it viewable for readers, not just editors. Thank you. --Rosiestep (talk) 00:13, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    • I added the targetting of anons. I also removed the diet: if I understand User:Xaosflux corectly, this would mean that once dismissed, users will not see the banner anymore. Showing just twice today is just not going to cut it for this banner: today is the momentum for all gender gap initiatives, we should not miss this. I hope this is okay for everyone. Ciell (talk) 08:12, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I do support the visibility of the banner and to make it viewable for readers for the whole month. @Anthere: the commune month has a « woman » part and putting it forth does not mean I dont support the event. I am not doing anything myself because my mother is being incinirated tomorrow and I dont have the energy to do anything in these circumstances. Nattes à chat (talk) 09:33, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Problem with Spanish translation of the banner

[edit]

Hey folks, I don't know where to leave this comment, so I thought here it might be appropriate. Right now, the banner is showing "Únete a nosotrOs", which is the masculine form of talking about "us", even when the translation of the banner has been done correctly with the feminine form ("nosotras"). Could you please change the Spanish banner to use the feminine form? Pinging @Ciell: @Seddon: to see if this change can be made. Scann (talk) 14:33, 8 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Done @Scann: I've marked the requested translations as reviewed - please check again in a few mins. I'm not 100% sure about this translation, but left it in place:
