What is the purpose of the campaign? How will you measure the success of the campaign?[edit]

Description - The Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos (WPWP) is an annual campaign where Wikipedians across Wikipedia language projects and communities add photos to Wikipedia articles lacking images. This is to promote the use of digital media files collected from various WP photography contests, photowalks organized by the Wikimedia community, on Wikipedia article pages. Thousands of images have been donated and contributed to Wikipedia Commons via various advocacy programs, photowalks, and contests including international photography contests such as Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Folklore, etc. Yet relatively few of these photos have been used on Wikipedia articles. Today, the Wikimedia Commons hosts millions of photo images but only a tiny portion of these have been used on Wikipedia article pages. This is a huge gap that this project aims at bridging

Romaine, since you are on the team, will you be handling this request? I understood the team would like to start the translation of the banner preferably before the campaign starts. Ciell (talk) 20:32, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I am not in this years team, and I am lacking time to do this banner. Romaine (talk) 20:34, 3 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Romaine. I found last years code, and should be able to easily recycle it I think. Ciell (talk) 19:57, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

In order to be pro-active as always, I think it should be done before the campaign as well. Thank you --Azogbonon (talk) 08:35, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Pro-active is good! ;-) Ciell (talk) 19:57, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
So T Cells, here's the banner for 2021: preview. What do you think? Please test the translations link in the right bottom as well. Ciell (talk) 20:20, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
(And yes, you can start translations immediately, if everyone is okay with this text! The translations of the banner will not interfere with any last minute tweaking of the visual mark up, so go right ahead. :) Ciell (talk) 20:26, 4 June 2021 (UTC))[reply]
Wow! I have looked at the preview [linked above], the banner looks good. Thank you so much, Ciell. We'd use the translation at Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos/CentralNotice since it's the same text. I'd follow up with User:Tulsi Bhagat, our communication manager on getting translation for additional langauges. We appreciate this valuable work, Ciell. Regards. @T Cells and Ciell: Hello, seen that this banner is now running on itwiki (and our affiliate is part of it), "obscuring" another in-place campaign run by other members of the Italian community which are not part of our affiliate, it is technically possible to "pause" the WPWP 2021 banner on Italian Wikipedia till the end of the WLE campaign? Since July 16. A discussion with the community started here. --Camelia (talk) 09:53, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Camelia.boban. We will pause the banner until July 16 as you suggested above. I believe Ciell will reset it soon. T CellsTalk 10:19, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Done I'll leave one or two days in between the different banners, so people will spot the #WPWP banner better when it come up again.
Thank you both 🥰. --Camelia (talk) 09:57, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell: Is it possible to localize the URL as well? We (bnwiki) set up a landing page on bnwiki. we would like to send people to Bengali wiki's landing page rather than meta. So, people (specially new) don't get lost finding the correct project. I belive you just need to change <a class="cnotice-full - banner - click external text" href="//meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Wikipedia_Pages_Wanting_Photos_2021"> to <a class="cnotice-full - banner - click external text" href="{{{link}}}"> (see this for example). Of course default landing page will be meta but in this way, if any wiki wants they can link their landing page. --আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 21:17, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
আফতাবুজ্জামান thank you very much for the suggestion! Please try if it worked, can you add the local link through translate wiki? Banners are cached on the server side, so we may need a bit for the new link to show. I hope to learn more about these 'magic words' and codes at the upcoming Wikimania. ;-) Ciell (talk) 21:35, 1 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell: Thank you very much. Please approve the pending messages/translations. --আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 01:16, 2 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Seddon and Ciell: I see both WPWP 2021 and wle_2021_pt are running at once, on most projects - and with no impression diet. Is there a good reason these need to be constantly served without limit? — xaosflux Talk 14:54, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    Perhaps _pt (or another one) had a glitch or was fixed, I added a diet to WPWP_2021 of 2/day for now - there could be a better setting. — xaosflux Talk 15:09, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    Xaosflux I just turned of certain geo-targetting of wle_pt an hour ago, to make room for another Portuguese campaign. Sorry to say that to my knowledge there is no policy on diets and settings for longer campaigns. And yes, I personally prefer diets to prevent over-use, but on the other hand I heard complaints that banners show up again when in a diet-campaign, where as when there're in one without a diet it is enough to dismiss the banner just once. This is actually one of the things I'd like to address in the upcoming meet at Wikimania. Ciell (talk) 15:44, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    Thanks, think the dismiss-once behavior isn't very consistent (I ended up here after seeing the WPWP_2021 banner for the 6th time on enwiki from the same machine!). — xaosflux Talk 16:07, 6 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
