Wikipedia Library User Group is being renamed![edit]

Hello! In the past few months, the Wikipedia Library User Group has been undergoing some major planning and developments. We just finished our very first open call with the user group members, which was a great success (see the meeting minutes). If you joined us during the meeting, we’d like to thank you for your interest. If not, not to worry, we have lots of things planned for the user group in which you can participate.

This message is to inform you that based on the input received from the user group members and the founding members, it was agreed that the Wikipedia Library User Group’s name be reconsidered by a voting process. As a valued member of the user group, we’d like to invite you to vote on the list of potential names. You can vote by following this link. The poll will run for a timeframe of two weeks. JSTOR account redistribution (The Wikipedia Library)[edit]

Hi - according to our records you received a free account for JSTOR through The Wikipedia Library. Because we’ve used up all of our allocated accounts, and it’s been some time since they were distributed, we want to redistribute any accounts that aren’t being used to users on our waitlist.

If you’re still using, or plan to use, your JSTOR access, no problem! Simply head over to the Library Card platform, log in, and request a renewal of your account. You should be able to do this from your user page, or the JSTOR signup page. If you can’t find the renewal button, or have any other issues or questions about this, please feel free to leave a message on my talk page. We’ll begin redistributing inactive accounts in September; if you request renewal after then we will only be able to reactivate your account if we have spots remaining. Thanks, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:31, 20 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

T&F[edit]

Hi, I'm not able to reapply for T&F. I had applied for a second collection, but then decided to keep Arts & Humanities. My subscription expired in mid-August, but when I went to renew I got an error message saying I had already requested a renewal? Seraphim System (talk) 03:30, 30 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Seraphim System. I sent your renewal for the Art & Humanities package on August 14. T&F is extremely disorganized. I (far too) frequently have to check up on them, and each time it sets in motion an incredibly long email chain. Give it a week more, and let me know. If you can't get access or otherwise have not been sent a new token, let me know and I will follow up for you. Cheers. AnthroMimus (talk) 05:08, 30 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Approved for Taylor & Francis July 8, but have not received user id and password[edit]

I applied for access to a number of databases, I was approved for all of them. I have yet to receive user id and password for Oxford Univ Press and Taylor & Francis. Can you help with this? Thanks MauraWen (talk) 21:16, 14 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

MauraWen: I tracked down the notice I sent to T&F. I will ask my contact what happened to your application. The only way they have to contact you is through your email address. Are you still using the same email that you had listed on wikipedia in July? Cheers AnthroMimus (talk) 03:20, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
thanks for responding so quickly. Yes, I have the same email address and I was sent other database user ids and passwords to that email address this summer.
Also, I did not get a reply back from the contact for Oxford University Press. Can you advise who to contact next to help me with getting access? thx MauraWen (talk) 12:59, 15 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
MauraWen: Cameron11598 responded on his/her talk page to the message you posted there. Was his response unsatisfactory for some reason?

T&F access issue[edit]

Hello AnthroMimus. I believe I have an active T&F subscription through the Wikipedia Library. However, when I have try to access articles published by T&F I discover that they're not available for my account. When I go to the access page https://www.tandfonline.com/action/showPreferences?menuTab=access while logged into my account, I doesn't show any subscriptions. I'm not sure whether the issue is that T&F hasn't actually enabled any subscriptions for me or whether the articles I try to access not in the list of journals available to Wikipedia users. Your help would be appreciated! Rupert Clayton (talk) 17:23, 20 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Could you let me know what journals you are trying to access? AnthroMimus (talk) 02:09, 28 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

T&F access issue[edit]

Hello AnthroMimus. I have an active account on T&F through the Wikipedia Library. However, when I try to access an article while logged in it only allows me to view the abstract. When I click on "Full Article" or "Get Access" it mentions "You do not have access to this content." The publication is The International Journal of the History of Sport (access to that journal was the reason I applied), and the article is Gender and Etiquette in British Lawn Tennis 1870–1939. The "Access entitlements" section of my account settings shows no subscriptions or allowances. Your help is appreciated! --Wolbo (talk) 13:44, 16 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

About how long ago were you given access? (The platform does not allow me to readily look this up.) AnthroMimus (talk) 14:29, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Subscription was confirmed on July 22, 2018. There was some communication with you regarding my application between July 12, 2018 and July 18, 2018. It expires on October 21, 2020. --Wolbo (talk) 21:01, 19 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
AnthroMimus, any update? --Wolbo (talk) 22:02, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Access to a book[edit]

Hi, before requesting full access to this database, could someone please take a quick look to see if this book is included with Wikipedia's access? Thanks, --Usernameunique (talk) 02:39, 15 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Someone is checking (or at least promised to). I don't have access thru Wikipedia so I can't tell you exactly what is part of the package offered here. I am having some with access, look it up. AnthroMimus (talk) 23:38, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Books were **not** included as of lsst year.AnthroMimus (talk) 23:39, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. Sorry to inform you that the book is not part of the package that T&F offers to Wikipedia editors. You might want to try local college libraries. I usually find books there. You can use Worldcat.org to find a local library which has the book. (You have to insert your zipcode). Good luck AnthroMimus (talk) 04:06, 19 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for checking and the ideas, AnthroMimus. --Usernameunique (talk) 06:46, 21 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
One other thought. If you can find the email address of the author, I would email directly to find out where a digital copy might be accessed. I don't know how long the book is, but with academic papers that I can't access I regularly email the corresplnding author. None of these people get royalties so they are more than happy to gt their work districuted. No one has ever turned me down and they usually send a PDF by return email. (I generally praise their work in advance by saying I had heard great things about it, etc.) It can't hurt. AnthroMimus (talk) 18:41, 22 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

T&F[edit]

Hi AnthroMimus. You sent my t&f application to them on the 12th but I haven't heard anything. I will be grateful if you will follow up. Thank you! Cambial Yellowing (talk) 14:19, 23 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Cambial Yellowing: It is no longer necessary to receive confirmation from T&F or a token. You obtain access through your proxy. See: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YqG1uwhTX2o&t=57s AnthroMimus (talk) 16:06, 26 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

T&F question[edit]

Howdy!

I just had my T&F application processed. I was able to click the wiki library link and enter the T&F website. At the top of the screen, it states that I have access via the wikipedia library. I just tracked down a Army Notes journal record (https://doi-org.wikipedialibrary.idm.oclc.org/10.1080/03071844709423998), but I do not see anyway of accessing it to see if it holds the info I was after to source an article. When I use the "get access" button, it just provides payment options or to log-in via an institution (wiki library does not appear to be listed). Does this mean that this particular journal is not accessible via the wiki library, or am I missing something? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 18:22, 23 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going to give you a high unsatisfactory answer: Yes, I would conclude that it's not part of the package, but I cannot say for sure. This is because despite several different attempts to have T&F give us a definitive list of the journals included, they have failed to do so. In fact, I no long have a contact at T&F who will respond to my questions. AT one timne T&F granted access to 3 different packages: Defense and Strategic Studies; Art and Humanities; and Natural Hisory-Earth Sciences. An applicant had to pick one of the three. When the cut-over to the present platform took place, they eliminated the categories, and they seem to have eliminated the lists for the categories they used to keep. I have asked people with access (Wiki editors) specific quesitons about what is and is not included and I have a fairly good idea of what general areas you will not find in the package. But I cannot tell you what is or is not in the package, and I don't think anyone at Wikipedia Library can tell you. Sorry. It is a source of enormous frustration to me, and probably to you and other editors as well. But as football coaches say when they want to look smart but really don't have a clue, It is what it is. 21:52, 27 January 2022 (UTC) AnthroMimus (talk) 21:52, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for the response, I do appreciate it and understand. Hopefully, there will be material in there that is accessible and can be used.EnigmaMcmxc (talk) 22:26, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You will find a ton of stuff in the package and much of it of high academic value. The prob lem is that the areas are highly specialized. But if you are interested in the fields they grant access to, you hit the gold mine. For example, if you are interested in vertebrate paleontology, this is the best package to have access to. If you are looking for something with a wide historical sweep, however, this probably wouldn't be your ham, so to speak. AnthroMimus (talk) 22:34, 27 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]

CRC Handbook via Taylor & Francis[edit]

There was a question at the Teahouse today (see en:WP:Teahouse#Wikipedia_Resource_Request) which I could only partially answer. Would you mind taking a look and replying there or on the OP's user page? It relates to access to the CRC handbook via Taylor & Francis and the Wikipedia Library. Thanks. Michael D.
