Queering Wikipedia 2023 conference

[edit]

Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group and the organizing team of Queering Wikipedia is delivering the Queering Wikipedia 2023 Conference for LGBT+ Wikimedians and allies, as a hybrid, bilingual and trans-local event. It is online on 12, 14 and 17 May, the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia #IDAHOBIT, with offline events at around 10 locations on 5 continents in the 5-day span as QW2023 Nodes.

The online program is delivered as a series of keynotes, panels, presentations, workshops, lightning talks and creative interventions, starting on Friday noon (UTC) with the first keynote of Dr Nishant Shah entitled: I spy, with my little AI — Wikiway as a means to disrupt the ‘dirty queer’ impulses of emergent AI platforms. Second keynote is at Sunday’s closure by Esra’a Al Shafei, Wikimedia Foundation’s Board of Trustees vice chair, entitled: Digital Public Spaces for Queer Communities.

If you have been an active Wikimedian or enthusiast, supporting LGBT+ activities or if you identify as part of the larger LGBT+ community and allies in Wikimedia, please join us in advancing this thematic work. We encourage you to join online or in person with fellow Wikimedians if it is easy and safe to do so. Our working languages are English and Spanish, with possible local language support at sites of Nodes.

Registration for the online event is free and is open until Wednesday May 10th at 18:00 UTC, for safety protocol. Late event registration approval and event access denial is at the discretion of organizers.

More information, and registration details, may be found on Meta at QW2023

WHO on the fediverse

[edit]

Hello! I forgot, are you on Mastodon or elsewhere in the fediverse? I can't find you on Wikis World or my follows. I wanted to share that James Love of KEI has «Asked the WHO to create an instance and use it to engage the public on its pandemic treaty negotiations today, speaking in Committee B of the World Health Assembly». I suspect you know how to pass the message to some well-meaning persons inside WHO. Cheers, Nemo 07:14, 27 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

Student seeking advice and feedback on editing an article

[edit]

Hi Lane! I'm a student working on revising the "Food Deserts" parent article and creating a new article on food deserts in the US, and I'd greatly appreciate any input and feedback from you as I work on revising and creating content.

I drafted a section titled "Causes" to add to this parent article because I recognized a lack of information about the proposed causes of food deserts in the current version of the article. However, in my research, I discovered that most of the proposed causes behind the formation of food deserts are in the context of the US because food deserts is a primarily Western concept that is most relevant for the U.S and the U.K. Because I'm also planning on creating a new child article focused on food deserts in the US, I'm thinking of adding my newly-drafted causes section to the new article and focusing more on the idea behind not being able to apply the same food desert framework to other countries in this article. What are your thoughts on this? My draft of the "Causes" section is available for viewing in my sandbox (User:Cd631874/Food desert#References).

I also finished my draft of the new sub-section titled "Alternative Frameworks to Food Deserts" in my sandbox that I intend to add to either the existing parent article or the new child article. I'm conflicted as to whether to include both the global and US perspectives on the shortcomings of the FD concept in this article as they both provide unique perspectives into FD's potential limitations, or whether I should put the US-specific proposed limitations of food deserts just in the new child article focused on the US. Please let me know if you have any thoughts on this matter.

Thank you so much! Cd631874 (talk) 05:35, 13 October 2023 (UTC)Reply

Wikimedians for Sustainable Development - December 2023 Newsletter

[edit]
This is our twenty-seventh newsletter, a sort of year-in-review for 2023.

Dear Wikimedians for Sustainable Development,

As we bid farewell to 2023, we reflect on a year that has been an uneven year for our user group. While the journey has been marked by some truly inspiring events, most of our efforts have been largely uncoordinated and the user group hasn't been the support it could have been. Yet, there's a glimmer of hope and a world of potential for 2024.

Highlights of 2023:

Newsletters Galore
We kicked off the year with zeal, sharing updates and inspiration through four newsletters. The number of things happening in the movement is astounding, but we need to rethink the format of the newsletter going into the next year.
Growing Strong
The Wikimedians for Sustainable Development family welcomed 33 new members in 2023. Your passion and dedication continue to inspire us, and we look forward to nurturing this community spirit in the year ahead.
Wikimania Talks
Our voices echoed far and wide at Wikimania, where several members of our community took the virtual stage to share insights and ideas about everything from Wikipedians-in-Residence's to open data. Your contributions showcased our commitment to sustainable development on a global scale.
Content Creation Magic
Throughout the year, our extended community demonstrated incredible dedication to expanding the knowledge base on Wikipedia. Countless hours were spent creating and curating content that aligns with our mission, contributing to a more sustainable digital ecosystem.
Campaigning hard
We saw a large variety of campaigns, from writing challenges to editathons. The willingness to experiment with new formats and partners, as well as learning from past efforts, shows great promise for the future.

Acknowledging Challenges:

While we celebrate these achievements, we acknowledge that 2023 presented its fair share of challenges. A lack of global coordination reminded us that the road to sustainable development is not always linear. However, it is precisely these challenges that fuel our determination to work together more cohesively in the coming year and proof that the user group is needed.

Hopeful Anticipation for 2024:

As we turn the page to 2024, let's carry forward the lessons learned and the successes celebrated. We are optimistic that, with renewed energy and a collective commitment, we will overcome obstacles and create an even more impactful and connected Wikimedians for Sustainable Development community.

Here's to a year of collaboration, growth, and making a lasting impact on the world through our shared passion for sustainability. Together, we can turn challenges into opportunities and pave the way for a brighter future.

Wishing you all a joyous holiday season and a Happy New Year!

Warm regards, User:Ainali, User:Daniel Mietchen

PS. We have started writing our yearly report, please add your activities to it.

West Bengal Wikimedians User Group held its 2024 Annual General Meeting yesterday

[edit]

Hello Bluerasberry/Archive 9!

We are sending you this message as you have signed up as a general member of the West Bengal Wikimedians User Group. We would like to inform you that the user group has organized its 2024 Annual General Meeting of Representative Members yesterday at the Birla Industrial & Technological Museum, Kolkata. In this meeting, we have adopted revised bylaws based on the feedback and suggestions coming from our members (see changes) and selected 10 new Representative Members based on the objective criteria set in the bylaws with regards to their recent or overall online and offline contributions. A new Representative Committee has also been formed while replacing 3 out of 5 members, who have completed their full term tenure for this responsibility. The participants have also shared learning from the projects taken from previous year and shared plans about new projects which they are willing to take during this year on behalf of the user group. We are also introducing a mentorship program from this year, where willing general members can work together with our program leads in user group programs and learn from each other. So, stay tuned for more excitements!

Difficulty in request to join Wikimedia LGBT+ User Group

[edit]

Hi @Bluerasberry: I would like to join this mission to increase representation of LGBTQ+ people globally regardless of place of origin, across Wikimedia. I saw the initiative recently, but unfortunately the membership form at Google Forms https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScN7CBFOxzarJ4jseQuMeYRm0NnMZCiHYwDpoL8TnXYs4EuQw/viewform seems to be no longer accepting responses.

Is there any way for interested individuals to join the initiative right now?

Can I register via email even though the 31 October, 2023 deadline for membership registration to be eligible for 2023 Elections voting has passed? —CrafterNova [ TALK ]  [ CONT ] 11:49, 22 January 2024 (UTC)Reply

Word limit on Wikimedia Foundation elections/2024/Candidates/Lane Rasberry

[edit]

Please be aware that there is a word limit of 1000 words for all your answers in total. You used so far 1003 words according to my counting tool in Libre Office Writer. For only 3 words I wouldn't be that picky, but other candidates are more clearly above that limit. Please find a way to make your candidacy 3 Words shorter.

The word limit exists to limit the effort for our translators who will translate your text into several languages so that people who do not understand English can vote for you. Der-Wir-Ing ("DWI") talk 10:02, 29 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Der-Wir-Ing: Thanks for checking. I used Google Docs and it reported 998 words.
In any case, I cut text, and now it is at 988.
Thanks for coordinating the election and best wishes for managing translation. Bluerasberry (talk) 12:30, 29 May 2024 (UTC)Reply

Optional question for Board Election candidacy

[edit]

A mistake in the candidate application was brought to the attention of the Election Committee, accidentally duplicating an optional question and omitting an additional optional question. The Election Committee decided that candidates may still answer the additional question, and will waive the word count limit in the case of answering this additional question. You may fill out your answer on your candidacy page. The deadline to answer the optional question is 23:59 UTC on 2 June. Please let me know if you have any questions. @Joalpe: Thanks I can feature this in the article. Bluerasberry (talk) 10:49, 15 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

What the hell...

[edit]

Please, edits like this are highly disruptive and create a lot of work for affiliates and hubs that you might not be aware of. I can understand the frustration, but creating work for other volunteers and staff members is not going to help fix this system... Braveheart (talk) 12:35, 17 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Braveheart: I am really sorry. I read the page and interpreted it in a way that seemed correct, and I was confident enough that I did not think twice about it. It was not my intent to disrupt anything. I apologize for my error.
No worries from me, but sincerely and openly, if people are expressing frustration, consider what needs to happen to provide more clear language. I was trying to help. Knowing the open/closed status of applications is useful information. Bluerasberry (talk) 15:12, 17 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the clarification, sorry for being angry. It meant that people at the CEE Hub were seriously considering messaging every affiliate to notify them of this, and considering there should be a round 1 in autumn it would've required some serious shift in planning from quite a few affiliates :-/ But it's good to know that we're not the only ones looking at that page ;-) Best, Braveheart (talk) 16:46, 17 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Braveheart: Your urgency is fine because it led to you contacting me. I posted on the talk page about how I came to misunderstand, see Grants_talk:Start#Sorry_for_marking_grant_as_closed. From one perspective it is a wiki page like any other so I thought to edit it, but from another perspective there is a lot of money on the line here and I was much too casual. l'élection du conseil d'administration de la Wikimedia Foundation 2024.

[edit]

"Bonjour,

Shayi ngolu (talk) 08:30, 7 September 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Shayi ngolu:
Your question is the second one I answered in this video - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jKfpT5Tg8Kg
Here is a different version of the answer in text:
You want my position about support for minority languages. The role of the trustee is to do strategic planning. Because the Wikimedia Foundation oversees spending of about US$200 million a year, then a trustee will rarely address an issue of less than US$1 million. Minority language groups typically need resource support of $2,000-$50,000 per year, per community, so a trustees will be considering them as a group who collectively need support.
There are a few challenges to address. One is that the Wikimedia community is not organized to practice democratic or community governance, and is unprepared to make a resource request on the order of $1 million for this demographic. Another issue is that the Wikimedia Foundation is spending money on minority language groups, but it does not have accounting records to be aware of where the money is going, or how what effect it has on this demographic generally over the years.
There are two things I want as a trustee, and which I think I can encourage. One is I want better financial records made public and easy to understand, so that anyone in the world can see how money is spent, especially for minority interest groups. The other is that I think the Wikimedia Foundation should sponsor the Wikimedia community to have enough governance to be able to speak for itself, and make decisions on how to spend limited resources. Without financial transparency, and without basic user governance, I think the challenges which have persisted for minority languages over the last 10 years will continue into the future.
