Oversighters
Hi! With the removal of Courcelles, there are only two oversighters left on Meta. In recent weeks there have been a lot of stewards using oversight here. Perhaps another oversighter should be nominated? Or alternatively, stewards could be authorized to oversight as needed? --Rschen7754 22:16, 1 December 2018 (UTC)
- @Rschen7754: Hi. Yes, I'd not mind onboarding a couple (or three) of people to the local oversight team. However we've not received in our mailing list any request to perform local OS for weeks (a couple were not for meta so we redirected them to the appropriate lists), so the locals were not aware of any OS requests for meta, nor given the oportunity to act, nor informed afterwards. I'm not going to get mad at it though. MSR allows stewards to use OS and if they were urgent requests or crosswiki that's fine by me. Further details via email. A request at CNR
Hello MarcoAurelio,
Sorry to bothering you here, but we need this as soon as possible. Could you please set up a banner based on our request at CNR § WikiNusantara 2019? The period of scholarship offering is due less than two week, but we are struggling with low participants who have registered. The banner should help us to inform the Indonesian community about the event.

- Hi Rachmat04. CN has become increasingly complicated for me over the time. Despite that I think I could successfully create the banner and the campaign and should be now running. Done - I hope that doesn't case any issues (ie: non-Indonesian projects receiving messages in Indonesian; should not happen as it's geotargeted to Indonesia). We had problems in the past with editors complaining about that. Regards, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 10:38, 3 December 2018 (UTC)

Recent changes
- Admins will not be able to unblock themselves if they are blocked by someone other than themselves. This is because it can cause damage if someone else takes over an admin account and other admins can't block them. If this is a problem for your community you can report it on Phabricator. You can also ask questions on Meta. There is a discussion on Phabricator about how to solve this if two admins fight with each other on a small wiki. [1]
- Small SVG images are now bigger when you see them in MediaViewer. [2]
- You can go to a section from the edit summary by clicking on the section name. Before this you had to click on the arrow. [3]
- When you jumped to a footnote that was referenced several times in an article it could be difficult to see where you were in the text. Now there are jump marks and highlights to help you find your way back. [4][5]

Growth team updates #4
Welcome to the fourth newsletter for the new Growth team!
The Growth team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in mid-size Wikimedia projects.
We need your feedback!
We have two requests for community members:
- Now that data is coming in for the welcome survey, we are planning how to use that data to personalize the newcomer's first day. See our current thoughts here, and join the conversation here.
- Try out the help panel's interactive prototype, and read about how we're planning to roll it out, and post any thoughts or reactions here.
Two Growth team projects have been deployed (detailed updates here)
- Personalized first day (welcome survey) was deployed on November 20 on both Czech and Korean Wikipedias.
- The survey is now being shown to half of new users (A/B test). Responses are being recorded in the database. We'll report on initial results during December.
- We are planning to test a second version of the survey, called "Variation C", which we think will maximize the number of users who complete the survey and stay on the wiki.
- The original objective of this project was to give newcomers the materials they need to achieve their goals, and so now we are currently planning how we will use the information collected in the welcome survey to personalize the newcomer's experience. We hope community members will read our current thinking and join the conversation here. Some of the plans we are considering include:
- Making it easy for newcomers to see editing activity around the topic areas in which they indicated that they're interested.
- Connecting interested newcomers to experienced editors.
- Surfacing the help content most relevant to the reason for which the newcomers created their accounts.
- Understanding first day (EditorJourney) was deployed on November 15 on both Czech and Korean Wikipedias. It has been done after a longer security review and final testing than expected. Data is now being recorded for all new users on those wikis, and we've been auditing the data and preparing to make initial reports during December. Stay tuned for the next newsletter!
Help panel is under construction
- Focus on help desk (help panel) is planned to be deployed during the week of January 7 on both Czech and Korean Wikipedias.
- This interactive prototype is the best way to see the design and wording in the feature.
- We ran live user tests on the prototype, with results posted here.
- In addition to giving the ability to ask a question, the help panel will also contain a set of links to existing help content. Our ambassadors on Czech and Korean Wikipedias are determining the right initial set of most helpful links in this task.
- We encourage community members to try out the prototype and read about the rules for who will get the feature, and add any thoughts to this discussion.
We are still looking for volunteers
Do you want to participate to our experiments? We are looking for new communities to work with us (especially a new mid-size wiki), and people to become ambassadors to help us to communicate with the different communities. Discover how you can involve yourself or your community.

- The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 11 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 12 December. It will be on all wikis from 13 December (calendar).

Future changes
- New accounts will need passwords that are at least 8 characters long. Admins, interface admins, bureaucrats, oversighters, CentralNotice admins, global renamers, check users, stewards and some other user groups will need passwords that are at least 10 characters long. This is because an attacker could cause damage to the wikis if they took over these accounts. [6][7]
- When you hover over a footnote it will show you the reference as a pop-up. This is so you don't have to jump down to the bottom of the page to see a reference. This will happen in 2019. Some wikis already have gadgets that do this. You will be able to turn it off. [8]

- Because of the holidays the next issue of Tech News will be sent out on 7 January 2019.
Recent changes
- Some templates that show notices about the content of the page will now be shown on the mobile website. In many cases they were hidden before. [9][10]
- Admins can no longer unblock themselves, except for self-blocks. A blocked admin can block the user who blocked them but no one else. This is so no one can block all admins on a wiki without being stopped. [11]
- The ParserMigration extension has been removed. It compared the result of two versions of the MediaWiki wikitext parsing pipeline. It was used when we moved to the Remex parsing library instead of Tidy.
Problems
<ref>tags can use parameters such as "name" or "group". For example<ref name="adams" group="books">. If a<ref>tag has more than two parameters all parameters are ignored. You don't get a warning that they don't work. This will soon be fixed. [12]

- The Wikimedia Foundation Android app team are working on making it easier to edit on mobile phones. You can read more about these plans. If you have an Android phone and speak at least two languages you can help testing in English. Tell Dchen (WMF) you want to be part of the testing by writing on her talk page or email her.

tiles.wmflabs.organdwma.wmflabs.orgwill stop working. They have no maintainers and run an old operating system. Tools which use it could stop working. This includes the mapnik gadget, hill shading, and hike and bike layers. New maintainers could help out and keep it going. [13]

Incorrect birth data
Eh excuse me, I have noticed that you are active in Meta Wiki but there is a situation and it is Debiit, it takes weeks repeatedly adding the birth data of those Japanese voice actors without indicating reliable sources and several IPs corrected it in several languages (including in Japanese), but it continues with its reversal because the least it knows how to do is to fight vandalism in all its life and is having a war of editions with other users and with the IP in the past that we try to correct them and still does not understand in their opinion.

PDTA: so you know Debiit does not have references of birth dates that indicate if they are true but I can show you that the users when creating an article take years guessing and that is why they are confused, so I have them only see source here, here, here and here.

- @Patriccck: Ahoj, ten text vlastně není překladem, protože nejprve vznikl v češtině a až poté v angličtině - a obě dvě jazykové verze jsem napsal já :-). MarcoAurelio česky neumí, jako steward má ale právo nastavovat CentralNotice - a banner vytvořil na základě mé žádosti. V každém případě ale díky za ostražitost.
