App rating vs. survey

Hi there!

Thanks for your note: here's my 2cents (spoiler alert: I'm very familiar with how the Foundation works, so consider the below as relevant experience sharing):

I wouldn't worry too much about rating as it is: 4.3 is pretty good (both the WP app and Kiwix were at 4.2 for a long time), and no matter what, you will get people making comments worth a thousand facepalms. As frustrating as it is, c'est la vie.

This being said, a good way to look at your score isn't too aim for an absolute number but to compare yourself to the average rating in your app's category (provided you pick the right category. Play around with AppBrain, and simply click randomly on other apps to see what's what. I also understand that you want to please the Foundation by providing relevant metrics, but I would not focus too much on this one in particular: what interests them in particular (and in my experience) is the number of uploads and articles improved (or accounts created, but I don't think that's something you can measure easily). *That* is important and conversion, therefore, is key. If you have to chose between a happiness survey and a short script that tells the Foundation how many users are using your app and/or editing articles with it, go for the script (bonus points if you can figure out new users (<6 months). Survey results (or similar anecdotal/qualitative data) you can get from the comments or the odd user email and, to be honest, bring almost nothing of value considering the amount of work necessary to collect it.

Hi Popo le Chien, thanks for the tips! :) I definitely agree that we should focus on the uploads and articles improved. We're currently using GLAMorous to check for number of pictures uploaded via our app that are used in articles. Perhaps it might be a good idea to scrap the user satisfaction metrics entirely, as I agree that they are not anywhere near as useful as the number of uploads used in articles etc.

I was wondering about including the number of users that are using the app (number of active installs). We did use that as a metric in the previous grant round, but omitted it this round as we had already achieved our goals (by tenfold! :)) in that aspect, and we were wanting to focus more on the usability of pictures submitted this round. Do you think that would be useful as a metric in this round as well? That would be very easy for us to include, as it is provided in the Google Developer console with no extra work needed.

Hi Misaochan. Rather than installs, I'd look at user retention rates, which are also provided by the App Store. It's apparently around 20% after 90 days for most apps, so I'd go for that. Intuitively I'd say you should easily be much higher. Popo le Chien (talk) 12:11, 24 July 2017 (UTC)

Update regarding Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons tutorial videos

Hello,

I regret to inform you that the series of motivational and educational videos project, which had been planned introduce Wikipedia and some of its sister projects to new contributors, is being discontinued.

There are multiple factors that have led to this decision. The initial budget and time estimates were far too small for a project of this scale and complexity. Also, my simultaneous involvement in Cascadia Wikimedians User Group was problematic due to the shortage of human resources for the user group, which resulted in my spending far more time trying to help the user group than I had planned, so my time and attention were diverted from this video project to assisting the user group.

You can find more information in the final report for the grant.

I regret that this project did not fulfill the hopes that many of us had for it, and I hope that in the future someone with the necessary resources will choose to resume work on it or a similar project. If you are interested in working on this or a similar project then please contact the WMF grants team.

On a personal note, I am retiring from the Wikimedia community. Perhaps I will return someday.

Video tutorial regarding Wikipedia referencing with VisualEditor

Hi, I have received a grant from WMF to support production of a video tutorial regarding creating references with VisualEditor. I anticipate that the video will be published in March 2019. If this tutorial is well received then I may produce additional tutorials in the future for English Wikipedia and possibly other projects such as Commons and Spanish Wikipedia. Community Wishlist Survey 2021: Invitation

Community Wishlist Survey 2021

Re: Wikimedia Café meetup in March 2026 focusing on the Wikimedia Commons mobile app

Hi Misaochan

I just got email from Pine with the above topic.

I am interested in collaboration with you to make an app that is more general that could be used as baseline to make apps for other sister wikis such as Wikibooks, Wikinews, Wiktionary, and others. I was wondering if this is something you could possibly help me with by providing homework and answers to questions as I write an app like this.

I programmed for web sites before but not for Android. I have a debian laptop. I think one of the baseline focus would be to have a working mobile app that allows users to login and read pages, but does not use the Minerva mobile frontend, instead, each wiki could develop its own tool set and layout depending on its needs. I hope we could connect somehow: I am on irc, discord, telegram, whatsapp and mumble, if any of those work for you, and am also happy to communicate by messages on wiki.

Eventually I think it could be similar to w:Duolingo by providing users with activities for every day that improve their selected wiki(s).

Hope this is okay to ask you to put some of your time towards this task, then I will be able to maintain and develop these apps a bit more independently on my own and find maintainers from these wikis. Gryllida 09:00, 22 February 2026 (UTC)

Information about the recent security incident

Hello, we are sending this message to inform you that your account was one of 97 registered Wikimedia accounts affected by malicious code as part of a recent security incident. This occurred only because you visited Meta-Wiki at a specific time.

This incident was caused by a malicious user script "worm" that was unintentionally activated during a security review by the Wikimedia Foundation staff. The worm modified MediaWiki:Common.js, causing Meta-Wiki visitors to edit or delete various pages during the approximately 23 minutes that this worm was operational.

We have analyzed the malicious user script and reviewed our internal and public logs. We have found no evidence that your account credentials were compromised, or that your account was used to conduct any other actions on Wikimedia projects besides editing or deleting random pages. We have no reason to believe that Wikipedia was under attack, or that any information about your account was breached as part of this incident.

All edits caused by the script have been reverted, and the deleted pages have been restored.
