Get started with the Lua interface to simplify the preparation of modules for translation in MetaWiki
[edit]Greetings!
The Language and Product Localization team has developed a Lua interface to simplify the preparation of Lua modules for translation in the MetaWiki platform. This means that module developers can now use the new Lua interface to load translatable strings, and the translators can translate them in the same translation interface that is used for templates and wiki pages.
This improvement makes it easier for translators to find and edit module strings without dealing with raw Lua code. It helps prevent mistakes that could break the module during translation.
We invite you to watch our demo video and read more about translatable modules to understand how it works. Please give us your feedback on this talk page on how well the Lua interface addresses the challenges in your workflow and how useful it is in module localization tasks. You can also refer to Module:User Wikimedia project, which was recently converted to utilize these messages, for example usage.
Your feedback is important as it will help us evaluate and decide how to continue developing and improving this interface, extend it to other wikis, or change our approach.
Thank you, and we anticipate your honest feedback.

[edit]Introduction The 2025 edition marked the sixteenth year of Wiki Loves Monuments. This year, 227,918 photographs were submitted by 3789 participants. As in previous editions, the competition was organized through national contests led by local volunteers, each of which selected up to ten photos to advance to the international round. A total of 56 national competitions submitted entries, resulting in 414 photographs for the international jury to review. Throughout October, contributors were invited to upload images of monuments recognized in their national heritage lists. Although participation remained strong, the total number of submissions and participating countries saw a slight decline compared to previous years. This report outlines the jury process, highlights the winning photographs, and presents the top 25 finalists, including those that did not receive prizes. It also summarizes the jury’s reasoning behind the selection of the top-ranking images. As the world’s largest photography competition, reaching the final stage of Wiki Loves Monuments is an impressive achievement. We extend our congratulations to all photographers whose work made it this far and hope readers enjoy this year’s exceptional collection of heritage photography.
How the Jury Worked
National contests held in September and October submitted their selected photos by 5 December, resulting in 414 entries from 36 countries. Three additional countries joined without submitting images, bringing the total to 39. Each country could nominate up to ten photos, though some submitted fewer. The international jury evaluated the images through a three-round process using the “Montage” tool. In the first round, nine jury members independently rated every photo from 1 to 5 stars, producing a shortlist of 218 images. In the second round, jury members could veto photos that did not meet essential standards—such as not depicting a monument, containing misleading or poor-quality elements, or showing intrusive watermarks. Photos with four vetoes were removed, followed by brief discussions to assess quality direction. The final round required each jury member to rank their top 25 images. Rankings were converted into points (25 for 1st place down to 1 point for 25th), producing a combined final score. Ties were resolved based on the highest individual ranking. Jury comments from rounds two and three informed the feedback included in the report.
What the Jury Evaluated The international jury consisted of seven experts in photography, cultural heritage, and Wikimedia work, representing diverse backgrounds. To avoid conflict of interest, none served on national juries. The jury assessed images based on three main criteria: Technical Quality – clarity, sharpness, lighting, resolution, and overall photographic excellence aligned with Wikimedia Commons’ Featured Picture standards.
Originality – creativity, uniqueness, and whether the image offered a fresh perspective compared to existing photos of the monument.
Encyclopedic Value – how clearly and accurately the monument was represented, ensuring it could be used effectively on Wikipedia without distortion or distracting elements.
Who was on the jury?
Valeria Dorado(Bolivia): Valeria Bolivian is a photographer specializing in landscapes, and for the past couple of years, Valeria has been collaborating with Wikimedia Bolivia as a jury member in several photography contests Shahen Araboghlian(Armenia): Shahen is a cultural professional and consultant based in Armenia. He currently works for the TUMO Center headquarters with art, tech, education, and beyond. Pinu Rahman(Bangladesh) is a World Photography Olympiad Ambassador known for documenting everyday life, culture, and heritage.
