Perspectives

This conference will be a global one, with women participating from many parts of the globe. They often deal with different issues, female participation levels and types of participation may differ, and they may have different goals they wish to work for in a broader, national perspective. This perspectives will be compiled and published for distribution to participants at WikiWomenCamp and Wikigénero where people from the country have substantially contributed to writing the perspective page for their country.

Algeria

The official language of Algeria is Modern Standard Arabic and Berber has been recognized as a "national language" the two languages are the native languages of over 99 percent of Algerians. French, has no official status but still widely used in government, culture, media (newspapers) and education (taught from primary school), due to Algeria's colonial history and can be regarded as being the de facto co-official language of Algeria.

Algerian has 12.50% internet penetration or 4,323,273 people having internet access in 2010.[1][2][3]

Wikipedia

Wikipedia is one of the most popular sites in the country, ranking 11th in December 2011.[4] People's interest in the site can also be seen on Facebook where 2,400 Algerians. Women made up 35.8% of all Algerians liking Wikipedia.[5] This interest is higher than the 9% female contributor population. The country currently does not have a Wikimedia chapter, and efforts to create one is unknown.

Algerians represent sizable parts of the viewing community on several different language Wikipedia, including 8.7% of all Arabic readers, 1.6% French Wikipedia readers, 11.4% Kabyle Wikipedia readers, and 4.9% of all Egyptian Arabic Wikipedia readers.[6]

On English Wikipedia, there are 2 articles about female footballers, 12 articles about female singers and 4 articles about female Algerian writers. [7] Coverage and participation of Algerian women is limited.

Algerian women do not appear to be engaged with Wikinews in English or Portuguese. There are no female administrators on English wikinews from this country, nor are there any women from this country who are English wikinews accredited reporters. A search for الجزائر, Arabic for Algeria, had between 40 and 50 results.[8] There appears to be coverage of Algeria on Arabic wikinews, but not of women in the country.

Wikibooks ranked 2,134th in the country in December 2011.[9] | Wikiversity was ranked the 5,480th most popular site in the country.[10] .

Women in Algeria

• Historically during the 1962 Algerian War of Independence, women fought as equals alongside men. They thus achieved a new sense of their own identity and a measure of acceptance from men. In the aftermath of the war, women maintained their new-found emancipation and became more actively involved in the development of the new state. Algeria is regarded as a relatively liberal nation and the status of women reflects this. Unlike other countries in the region, equality for women is enshrined in Algerian laws and the constitution. They can vote and run for political positions. North African and Algerian enjoy many more privileges than their counterparts in neighboring and African countries. This is due to historic European influences and Berber customs that do not regard women as inferior to men. Algerian women can inherit property, obtain a divorce, retain custody of their children, gain an education and work in many sectors of society. Women make up 70 percent of Algeria’s lawyers and 60 percent of its judges. They also dominate the fields of medicine, healthcare and science. Increasingly, women contribute more to household income than men. As of 2007, sixty-five percent of university students are women, with more than 80% joinng the workforce after graduation. They are encouraged by family members to become educated and contribute to Algerian society. Algerian women are among the first in North Africa to become taxi and bus drivers. Their numbers are also increasing in the police force and security positions. Algerians have been exposed to many outsiders and so can speak a combination of languages. Predominantly, French, a Berber dialect and Arabic are spoken. A tradition of subtitling rather than dubbing foreign television shows and films has increased the number of English and Spanish speakers in recent years.

During the 2011 Summer of Research, the WMF hired eight research fellows, none of whom were from Algeria. The country was not visited as part of the WMF educational tour of the middle east.

The Chapter and Offline participation

There are four women on the board of Wikimedia Argentina. Gender strategies are already included in Wikimedia Argentina's working plan for 2012. It is one of the main promoters of including gender policy as a key issue in all their activities. Most relevant iniatiatives related to Gender Gap are:

Wikipedia

The de facto official language of Argentina is Spanish, usually called castellano (Castilian) by Argentines. Argentina is the largest Spanish-speaking society. According to Ethnologue there are around 1.5 million Italian speakers (making it the second most spoken language in the country) and 1 million speakers of the North Levantine dialect of Arabic (spoken in Syria, Lebanon and Cyprus). Standard German is spoken by 400,000—500,000 Argentines of German ancestry, making it the fourth most spoken language. It is unknown whether indigenous language Wikipedia in Guaraní, Quechua, Aymara exista. English, Brazilian Portuguese and French are also spoken. English is commonly taught at schools as a second language with Portuguese and French to a lesser extent.

There is one woman active on the language incubator who uses Mapuche language, which is spoken in Chile and Argentina, he has made 353 edits.

In December 2011, there were 146,580 women of all ages from Argentina who were interested in Wikipedia on Facebook.[11] In the period between November 2010 and October 2011, 10.3% of the traffic to Spanish Wikipedia was from this country.[12] On English Wikipedia, there are 69 articles argentine women in politics. On English Wikipedia's Women's History Wikiproject, the most popular November 2011 article about an Argentine woman was Eva Perón, ranked 144th overall with 63228 views during the month.

On English Wikipedia, there are 70 articles about female politicians from Argentina, 63 articles about Argentine female singers, 27 articles about Argentine women writers and 23 articles about Argentine female tennis players.

In December 2011, according to Alexa, Wikibooks was ranked the 4,644th most popular site in the country.[13].

Wikipedia

Armenian Wikipedia rank 66 out of 280 Wikipedia languages in January 2012. It has 10 very active contributors and 65 active editors, number of female contributors unknown. Susianna Kentikian is an English Wikipedia Featured Article about an Armenian/German female boxer.

In December 2011, according to Alexa, Wikibooks was ranked the 1,631th most popular site in the country.[14]

In April 2011, there was the first-ever Armenian Wikipedia Hackathon. Women were participants in this.[15]

There was a Wikipedia 10 Birthday celebration in Armenia.[16]

Australia

Australian women have been editing Wikimedia projects since Wikipedia was founded in 2001. Among the first were Claudine Chionh and Karen Johnson on the English Wikipedia. The English Wikipedia has had five female administrators from Australia, and one Australian woman on its Arbitration Committee: Rebecca. Australian traffic accounts for 1.8% of all global traffic to Wikipedia, on par with the amount of traffic India provides.[17]

Wikimedia Australia currently has two women on the board, Vice President Laura Hale and Secretary Anne Frazer. The chapter's first president, Brianna Laugher, is female and women have always had at least one place on the board.[18] Sarah Ewart was the board's longest serving member. When the chapter was first founded in 2008, there were five female members, 13.8% of the total membership. This increased to eleven female members in 2009, 23.4% of the total membership. In 2010, this number dropped to four total female members, 12% of total members.[19]

Women have frequently been participants in meetups around the country, though their participation, like that of their male counterparts, is dwindling. For example, in 2007, a Canberra meetup had roughly forty people attend, of which half were women. In 2011, a Canberra meetup was held with around nine people attending of which two were women. RecentChangesCamp has become Australia's national wiki conference. In 2011, there were five female participants out of twenty total with the conference primarily being organised by one man and one woman. The 2012 conference is predicted to have a similar gender composition. Women attended only two of Australia's Wikipedia 10 year birthday celebrations: Canberra and Perth, although the three Perth female attendees were not Wikipedia editors.

In 2011 Wikimedia Australia sponsored Ada Camp Melbourne which will take place in January 2012. This women-only conference is dedicated to helping and promoting women involved in the open-technology movement. One of Wikimedia Australia's board members and a chapter member will participate.[20]

There were grassroots efforts by some Australian women to increase female participation on Wikipedia. This was done by non-members of Wikimedia Australia, which included two presentations before groups of women at a meeting, a mini-workshop at a female owned coffee shop in Canberra and at least one radio appearance. There were efforts to integrate the Australian female led efforts into the Wikimedia framework by having them join the gender gap list. Shortly after they joined, in response to a situation on the list, these women ended their outreach efforts and efforts to re-engage them have been unsuccessful. In December 2011, there were 40,580 women of all ages from Australia who were interested in Wikipedia on Facebook.[21] In December 2011, according to Alexa, Wikipedia was ranked the 7the most popular site in the country.[22]

Australian content for women on English Wikipedia is strong in terms of covering women's sport and female politicians though the men's content often is much better and there is more of it. Canberra Roller Derby League, Leah Poulton, Alyssa Healy and Lauren Ebsary are a Good Article about Australian women's sport. This assessment is the second highest assessment available to articles on English Wikipedia. Content related to Australia's feminist movement needs a lot of improvement. Netball is one of Australia's most popular participation sports for women. There are a relatively large number of articles about this sport in Australia. Over the past year, the Australian netball articles are mostly maintained by a very active male New Zealand editor with Australian IP addresses providing some support. On English Wikipedia, there are 11 articles about roller derby leagues from this country. Australia has a female Prime Minister, Julia Gillard. The article about her is the 71st most popular in the English Wikipedia's Wikiproject Women's History most popular article list, having received 100,226 views in November 2011. However her article is only assessed as a C class article. Australia's female Governor General, Quentin Bryce had only 13,155 visits during that period and most of the edits to the article were made by men. On English Wikipedia, there are 209 articles women in politics, with more articles spread across four subcategories. There are 116 articles about models from this country on English Wikipedia. As of February 2012, there were only ten articles about notable Australian women from the 1908 edition of "Who in Australiasia" who had articles out of a possible total of 21.[23] Australian women have been involved with some Australian specific project's like Australian literature. The high point for this project was three women involved, but female participation has since dropped and efforts by project participants to recruit additional Australian women have been unsuccessful. Female Australian leadership on English Wikipedia exists, but it is not very visible; none of the recently elected administrators have been Australian women. In December 2011, elections were held for English Wikipedia's Arbitration Committee and no women from Australia ran for a position. Overall, Australians have been represented but mostly by men.

When compared to some other countries, Australian content is particularly good on Simple Wikipedia, with a large number of these articles being Good Articles and Very Good Articles. Unfortunately, most of this content does not relate to Australian women. Only three of the twenty-one articles in Australian people are about Australian women. It was largely the work of one Australian male. Simple Wikipedia also lacks a female Australian administrator and check user. Australian content exists on other language Wikipedias. Much of this appears to involve Australian actors, models politicians and athletes. The article about Julia Gillard exists in a number of languages including Arabic, Bengali, Chinese, Belorussian, Catalan, Czech, Cypriot, Danish, German, Estonian, Greek, Spanish, Persian, French, Korean, Croatian, Indonesian, Italian, Dutch, Japanese, Norwegian, Polish, Russian, Serbian, Thai, Vietnamese, Yiddish, Chinese. The article about Katy Gallagher is on two other Wikipedia. Former New South Wales Premiere Kristina Keneally has articles written about her in five other languages. The Priya Cooper article appears in German and Estonian. The article about Samantha Stosur is written in over 20 different languages. The article about the Australian actress Nicole Kidman appears in over thirty languages. Australian model and businesswoman Elle Macpherson appears in twenty other languages. On Spanish Wikipedia, there are 18 articles about models from this country. On Turkish Wikipedia, there are 2 articles about women from this country.[24] Australian women are covered in other languages. There are 3 articles about female actors from this country on Belorussian Wikipedia.[25] On Aragonese Wikipedia, there are 5 articles about female actors from this country.[26] On Slovak Wikipedia, there are 5 articles and 1 category about female actors from this country.[27]

Norfolk Island language Wikipedia was created and largely originally supported by an Australian woman. Australian women and other women have been part of Australia's efforts to improve Wikipedia content in Australasian languages. Wikimedia Australia is sponsoring a language conference to support this goal, though the female leadership for the conference largely is coming out of Indonesia.

There are no female Australian administrators on wikinews, nor are there any Australian women who are wikinews accredited reporters. A December 2011 search on English Wikinews for Women Australia found 130 articles that mentioned both words.[28] A male university journalism professor at the University of Wollongong had a class project on wikinews. Class membership was split evenly along gender lines. These students, both male and female, published several articles. Sadly, the retention levels were low and few students have continued to contribute after the class ended. One of the best contributors to Wikinews as a result of this classwork was female. A December 2011 search on Spanish Wikinews for Australia mujeres found 21 articles that mentioned both words.[29] In December 2011, according to Alexa, Wikinews was ranked the 48,408th most popular site in the country.[30] On Portuguese Wikinews, there are no women active from this country. This may be a result of several factors, including the language and because Portuguese Wikinews only has an active editing community of five people, one of whom is a woman.

Wikiversity was ranked the 4,229th most popular site in the Australia.[31] Wikiversity plays an important role in Australia's educational involvement with Wikimedia Foundation projects, although its use is primarily limited to one of Australia's 38 universities, and has not been subjected to significant use by other secondary or tertiary education providers. The University of Canberra has one of the largest Wikiversity communities of all universities on the project, with the University of Canberra National Institute of Sport Studies being one of the most active departments on the project. Twenty-one staff members have been involved with the project. Six of them are women. Inside UCNISS, there have been five staff members and faculty who have used Wikiversity. Of these, one was female. Four instructors, from sport studies and psychology, have used Wikiversity as part of their student coursework. None of these were women. 54.3% of University of Canberra students are female and this ratio was generally true for the classes using Wikiversity. When the classes finished using Wikiversity for school work, there was very little retention of these contributors on Wikiversity. The consistent Australian editing on Wikiversity is male.

Commons has a large number of pictures of Australian women. There are 2 categories and 5 pictures of women's association football and 1 picture of the women's national cricket team.

On other Wikimedia Projects, Australians are active but women are either not highly visible, are not in leadership positions, are not getting grant funding to support their work or are not using these projects as instructors in their classrooms. In December 2011, according to Alexa, Wikibooks was ranked the 4,591th most popular site in the country.[32] English Wikibooks has been used by a male Australian instructor at the University of Canberra as part of a course he taught. Students contributed to a book about neuroscience that has since gone on to be featured. Approximately half the students in class were female. When the class ended, few of these contributors stayed on as active contributors to English Wikibooks. On English Wiktionary, there is an Australian male bureaucrat but no female bureaucrats from the country.[33] During 2011, there were two grants distributed by Wikimedia Australia to individual members of the chapter to improve content on Wikimedia Commons. The two individuals did excellent work and the chapter was pleased with their results. The grants went to men. No women had applied for a grant to improve Commons. There are no Australian women administrators on incubator and no active Australian women editors. The project has few participants overall, with only 44 users identified as female and 516 identified as male. There is an Australian male sysop on Mediawiki.org. There do not appear to be any Australian females who hold a similar position on the project.[34] On English Wikisource, there are no female bureaucrats from this country.[35] This is an area that needs improvement.

Wiki Takes My Town… is an Australian project, with much of the work being done in Western Australia. Versions were held in Fremantle twice and in Joondalup once. People went and took pictures of local places where no pictures for them were found on Commons. Women participated in the events, and their pictures were uploaded to Commons by event organisers.

One of the major recent projects led by an Australian woman is the History of the Paralympic Movement in Australia project. Part of this work has included outreach events, including one in Perth, Western Australia. Three Paralympians showed up, two of whom were female. One of them has worked on keeping the article about herself up to date. At another outreach event in Brisbane, Queensland that included Paralympians, women again were included among the participants. The first Australian Paralympic article to be nominated for Good Article status as a result of this project was nominated by a male but featured one of Australia's most famous female Paralympians, Priya Cooper. As of December 2011, there were forty-one Did You Knows associated with this GLAM project. Of them, sixteen featured women. The third most popular DYK by article views was about a woman, Elizabeth Edmondson. Other female related DYKs ranked fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, tenth, twelfth, thirteenth, fourteenth, seventeenth, and twentieth. For November 2011, among the most popular Paralympic related articles, there were twenty-six articles about Australian women in the top five hundred most popular articles. There are twelve Spoken Word articles about Australian Paralympians, four of which feature females. On the blog dedicated to the project, an interview with Elizabeth (Edmondson) Mills was shared. She is the project's first Paralympic contributor, and has donated images from her personal collection to help with the project. These images were shared using a Creative Commons license.

The National Library of Australia GLAM efforts involved women participating at high levels. A woman is responsible for having the ability to get citations in Wikipedia format on Trove. Women have also been involved with GLAM efforts at state libraries in Australia. Elli Torres wrote a paper titled "What's black and white and read all over? QR Code initiatives at SLQ" that looks at their efforts. Michelle Swales, State Library of Queensland and Chris Bermingham, Western Downs Regional Council published a paper in September 2011 titled Getting Queensland Out There, Building local content on Wikipedia in partnership with public libraries that also examines library practices in regard to Wikipedia.

The Wikimedia Foundation's Australian engagement can be hit or miss. During the December 2011 fundraising appeal, no Australians, men or women, were featured as part of the appeal. During the 2011 Summer of Research, the WMF hired eight research fellows. There were no research fellows, male or female, from Australia that were formally involved as fellows though at least one woman from Australia applied for this project. Australians do get hired by the Wikimedia Foundation, but the most visible people to date have been Australian men, including one programmer and the first GLAM research fellow.

Women are fans and participants on other wikis on the Internet. Wikihow is a commercial wiki that provides user contributed advice on how to do a variety of tasks. Wikihow historically has had high rates of female participation, with one source reporting 43% of their participants being women.[36] Using Facebook advertising data on 10 February 2012 as a measure of interest in this country, there are 21,600 women of any age from Australia who are interested in Wikihow. A search on Wikihow for women and this country shows 312 results.[37]

In December 2011, there were 4,140 women of all ages from Austria who were interested in Wikipedia on Facebook.[39] In December 2011, Wikipedia was ranked the 6th most popular site in the country.[40] In the period between November 2010 and October 2011, 8.3% of the traffic to German Wikipedia was from this country.[41] On English Wikipedia, there are 33 articles women in politics and 11 more in a subcategory for Female MEPs for Austria . On English Wikipedia's Women's History Wikiproject, the most popular November 2011 article about an Austrian woman was Hedy Lamarr, ranked 44th overall with 135013 views during the month. There are 3 articles about women's association football clubs in this country on English Wikipedia. The project has few participants overall, with only 44 users identified as female and 516 identified as male.

Azerbaijan

The official language of Azerbaijan is Azerbaijani (also called Azeri), and is closely related to Turkish, Qashqai and Turkmen. The Azerbaijani language is divided into two varieties, North Azerbaijani and South Azerbaijani, and a large number of dialects. Turkic Khalaj, Qashqa'i, and Salchuq are considered by some to be separate languages in the Azerbaijani language group. There are 13 other languages spoken natively in the country. It is unknown whether wikipedia in these languages exist.

There are 3,347,672 Azerbaijanis or 35.99% of the total population on the internet.[42][43][44]

Wikipedia and Wikimedia Chapter

Wikipedia is the 7th most popular site in Azerbaijan.[45] This popularity can be seen on Facebook, where 600 women from Azerbaijan are interested in Wikipedia.[46] Azerbaijan does not have a Wikimedia chapter and efforts to create one is unknown. [47] However here have been several meetups in Baku, Azerbaijan.[48][49] Several did not appear to have men in attendance, though several attended the 10 year Wikipedia celebration in Baku.[50]

Azerbaijanis make up 70.8% of all visitors to Azeri Wikipedia. They do not make up a large part of the visitor population to any other language Wikipedia.[51]. There are around 25 very active user (more than 100 edit per month) and 90 active user (more than five edit per month). Azeri Wikipedia rank 46 out of 280 wikipedia languages with 5.3 million visit on February 2012. About 1,155 users explicitly set their gender, with 1,011 users or 87.53% being male and 144 or 12.47% being female.[52]

Other wikimedia project

On Wikibooks, 164 users made at least 1 edit and 37 users made at least 5 edits. 35 users explicitly set their gender: 30 or 85.71% are male and 5 or 14.29% are female.[53] On Wikiquotes, 198 users made at least 1 edit and 57 users made at least 5 edits. Of these, 23 users explicitly set their gender: 20 or 86.96% are male and 3 or 13.04% are female.[54]

Azerbaijani participation exists on projects outside their home languages. There are 3 men and 0 women on the language incubator who are use Azerbaijani language as their native language.[55]

Women in Azerbaijan

Though women in Azerbaijan nominally enjoy the same legal rights as men, gender discrimination perceived as common particularly in rural communities. Women who appear in public unaccompanied, smoke in public, drive automobiles, or visit certain theaters and restaurants are subject to disapproval. Traditional social norms and poor economic conditions continue to restrict women's roles in the economy, and there are reports that women have difficulty exercising their legal rights due to discrimination.

Though the majority of Azerbaijani women have jobs outside the home, women are underrepresented in high-level jobs, including top business positions. As of November 2010, there were 19 women in the 125-seat parliament. Most of the time, these are new faces and there is a problem in getting the same women to consistently show up to events in order to build up a regular base of active female participants. Currently Wikimedia Bangladesh has no female members in the board. The board is planning to find a woman from the country to be a a Bengali participant in at WikiWomenCamp in Argentina.

On Bengali Wikipedia, there are 4 articles about Bangladeshi social workers, 3 of whom women. The amount of women specific content in Bengali, and Bangaldeshi women content, is limited. The Bengali word for User is gender neutral; the name space does not indicate the gender of the user on Wikimedia projects.

On English Wikipedia, there are 11 articles women in politics, 4 articles about Bangladeshi feminists. Bangladeshi women do not appear to be given much coverage on non-Bengali Wikipedia. This is for several reasons, including a lack of participation of women in certain categories, language issues that make it difficult to report on Bangladeshi women, and a general lack of interest in existing contributors in covering their issues.

Available data on health, nutrition, education, and economic performance indicated that in the 1980s the status of women in Bangladesh remained considerably inferior to men. Women, in custom and practice, remained subordinate to men in almost all aspects of their lives; greater autonomy was the privilege of the rich or the necessity of the very poor. Most women's lives remained centered on their traditional roles, and they had limited access to markets, productive services, education, health care, and local government. This lack of opportunities contributed to high fertility patterns there are views that acute poverty at the margin appeared to be hitting hardest at women. About 82 percent of women lived in rural areas in the late 1980s. The majority of rural women, perhaps 70 percent, were in small cultivator, tenant, and landless households; many worked as laborers part time or seasonally, usually in post-harvest activities, and received payment in kind or in meager cash wages. The economic contribution of women was substantial but largely unacknowledged. Women in rural areas were responsible for most of the post-harvest work, which was done in the chula, and for keeping livestock, poultry, and small gardens. Women in cities relied on domestic and traditional jobs, but in the 1980s they increasingly worked in manufacturing jobs, especially in the readymade garment industry. Those with more education worked in government, health care, and teaching, but their numbers remained very small. Continuing high rates of population growth and the declining availability of work based in the chula meant that more women sought employment outside the home. Female wage rates in the 1980s were low, typically ranging between 20 and 30 percent of male wage rates.

Women in Brazil

Women in Brazil enjoy the same legal rights and duties as men. The law prohibits discrimination based on gender in employment and wages, however there are significant wage disparities between men and women. Many Brazilian women have been elected mayors and federal judges. About nine percent of the seats in the national parliament were held by women. World Economic Forum released a study indicating that Brazil had virtually eradicated gender differences in education and health treatment but that women still lagged behind in salaries and political influence. Women were paid 30 percent less than men. Although there's major participation of women in the elections, the percentage of women who become Federal deputies is still very low, accounting for only 8.8%.

Women already represent more an undisputed majority in many of the college courses. In the areas of Health and Human Sciences, they account for 66% and 71% of all students, respectively. Besides, as a whole, 53% of all Brazilians who are in universities are women. Brazilian women since the 1970s surpassed men in the higher levels education. In 1970, there were approximately 19,000 women professionals in Brazil, including engineers, architects, dentists, economists, professors, lawyers, and doctors. By 1980, there were about 95,800 women in these fields. However, at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, psychology, literature, and arts classes are composed almost entirely of women, in contrast to agriculture and national defense courses, in which extremely low numbers of women are enrolled.

There are serious and controversial issues about differences in the situation of women with different races and ethnicities in Brazil. As a whole, black and Amerindian women enjoy considerably less quality of life than white women, but this reflects the general characteristics of the social and economic gap that has separated social classes in Brazil for centuries, thus not indicating any specific problem about gender and women's rights.

The Foundation

Since 2010 The Foundation launched Brazil Catalyst Project and hired several consultants to handle this as part of Global Development Team. Financial report shows that the Global Development Team spent $ 2,154,912 including for their project in Brazil. The Foundation has attended Brazil Campus Party in Brazil the last two years, along with a few other events including FISL. As part of the Catalyst program, WMF is working on the establishment of a WMF representative office in Brazil, similar to the previously established trust in India. The contractor(s) from this office will work hand-in-hand with Wikimedia Brasil. In 2012 The Foundation project for Brazil are being pooled into Wikimedia Foundation - Brazil Program.

From September-November 2011, there were two contractors hired to conduct research on Portuguese Wikipedia. The quantitative researcher was a male from a Canadian school, and the qualitative researcher was a female from Brazil.

Short History of Women in Estonia

• Before 1918 - in Czarist Russia and under earlier foreign powers - Estonian women had very few civil rights. Estonia was an agrarian country with almost no matrilineal traditions, although there seem to have been traditions of women as folk-singers (the older evidence is somewhat shaky) and witches (most of witches burnt in Estonia were women). Estonians belonged to the rural peasantry, and the upper classes in cities were mostly composed of Germans (with some Swedes, Danes, Russians, Scots, etc in the mix). There were some rare medieval cases of women belonging to the guilds, mostly as widows of artisans. By the start of 19th century, there was a widespread web of rural schools, which sometimes had women as pupils, too.
• In 19th century, first women became renown as writers, the most lasting fame belonging to Lydia Koidula, daughter of the owner of major Estonian newspaper Postimees. She was pictured on the 100-kroon bill from 1992 until the transfer to euro. (In former centuries, the most well-known woman in Estonian history was probably Swedish queen Christina, celebrated in some placenames.) By the end of century, first fighters for women's emancipation emerged (e.g. Lilli Suburg). In 1880s, first women's organizations were born. Still, the only way for Estonian women to get a proper higher education was in Western Europe. Women's Association, created in 1907, promoted women's rights, including equal pay. In 1909, Estonian writer and language reformer Johannes Aavik published his short novel Ruth, creating an archetypal figure of an educated bluestocking as the eponymic heroine. In 1917, one of the most influential Estonian poets Marie Under published her first collection of poems, soon becoming a live incarnation of the aforementioned archetype. Since then, there has been a continual tradition of strong women poets in Estonia.
• Women got the right to participate in elections in 1918, with the establishment of Estonian Republic. It was confirmed in the first constitution of the republic. In the same year, Estonian language was established in University of Tartu, which also started to accept women.
• During the interbellum, general mentality towards Estonian Republic was somewhat conservative. Although the intellectual feminism that was born at the start of the century never died, with the rise of romantic nationalism in 1930s women were constantly seen as the preservers of the hearth in state ideology. Yet, in 1934, the share of women amongst the working population of Estonia was 51%.
• In Soviet time (1940-1991), there were double standards towards emancipation. On one hand, men and women were strictly equal in Soviet ideology. To some extent, practical application of this ideological stand deepened during the World War Two, e.g. there were very few women left who did not have a job. On the other hand, although there was formally the same pay for similar work, gender stereotypes remained strong in both division of labor and the ideal model of family - after all, the initial sexual freedom of early Bolshevik state was abolished already in 1930s. Basically, as a wide generalization it can be said that in Soviet Estonia, a woman had to care for the family AND go to work. Soviet womens' magazines had a strong bias towards work-related issues while missing several themes ubiquent in their Western counterparts, e.g. shopping and make-up.
• After the reestablishment of Estonian independence in 1991, there was a new-found movement amongst women towards staying at home and becoming full-time domestic moms and wives. Still, it was more about the image that was impossible under the former regime, and less about the actual job redistribution. In 1996, interdepartmental committee for the promotion of gender equality was established. Since 1998, the according measures are included in the governmental agenda. There is a bureau for gender equality situated at the ministry of social affairs.
• Currently, while there are mostly equal opportunities in laws for both genders, the actual glass ceilings are still hard to break. Since 1991, there have been few strong women in the government and no prime ministers. Women are a constant minority in seats of power, including Estonian parliament (Riigikogu). The gender gap in pay is also noticeable, yet there have been hard inconsequential fights in media about the relevance or even truthfulness of the according statistical data. There is a resilient political will to deny the need for stronger criminalization of domestic violence and human trafficking, as those crimes are said to be already covered be the existing laws; yet whatever the laws, the actual verdicts given for domestic murders of women still tend to be lenient. All these problems are not only the fault of political establishment, but deeply rooted in the society; e.g. there are equal possibilities for both genders to claim parental benefits, but the actual share of fathers claiming those benefits remains below 5%.
• Still, it can be said that while women's situation in Estonia does not reach the Nordic standards by which Estonian society usually measures itself, its problems are the usual problems of advanced Western societies. Women are common amongst scientists, police, lawyers, judges, etc, also on the lower levels of politics. Lacking reverends, Estonian Lutheran Church has accepted women as vicars for a decade now, although there are no women bishops. There is actually a problem with the lack of men in universities, as boys tend to drop out of schools more often. All in all, the current situation seems bright, and maybe even not really hopeless.

In 2009 Wikimedia Indonesia deployed it first ambitious project Free Your Knowledge 2010 organized mainly by women committee and took seven months in design, preparation, and internal training, it runs on 15 thousand dollar (US) budget. The competition system tried in academic (universities) setting have a repeating result of having women winners either on the first position or women majority winners within top five position (tried four times in different locations and different languages wikipedia). The system replicate its success in increasing very active users and for the first time in 2011 the system undergo a "non-competition" mode in Wikimedia-Lontar project for English and Indonesian Wikipedia. The replication projects and capacity building in 2011 funded by Wikimedia Foundation grant costing around 40 thousand dollars. Other standard practices for projects accountability also established. Wikimedia Indonesia is using wiki as a reporting platform for project finances cash flow and the finance report is praised as "revolutionary", landing the chapter to co-manage a $1 million dollar media grant with the other two media organization from The Ford Foundation. Wikimedia Indonesia also shares their experience as a chapter in Chapter and Wikimedia Project Primary Challenges post. Wikimedia Italia is mainly led by women. 3 out of 18 founding members were women. Frieda Brioschi and Giulia Clonfero are the most recurring members in the board, Frieda being president since 2005, with a single break when she was elected as community trustee in the WMF board (2007), shortly resigning; they're also the only members who got appointed as non-voting members when didn't stand as candidates, so that the average number of women in the 7 boards WMI had is 1.14 out of 5, or the 29 % of members of the extended board. Marina Milella, a woman, is one out of three chapters ombudspersons. Civvì, former (founding) member, has been the first (part-time) employee of the chapter.

The board of Wikimedia Netherlands has two female members: in the past, they had a female chair and several toher female board memebers. The employee of the Dutch board is female and women have been active in helping GLAM projects in the Netherlands. Freelancers are hired sometimes to help organize events: a female organized the 2011 GLAM Camp in Amsterdam from this position, an international event with over twenty different countries represented. Another helped organizing Wiki Loves Monuments and a third led the fund-raising campaign in 2010. Woman volunteers and members participate in the Dutch Chapters events on a regular basis.

There is no New Zealand Wikimedia chapter. New Zealand has several female Wikimedians who do everything from new page patrol to content-building. A few of them have been involved in editing Wikimedia projects for several years.

New Zealand editors on the English Wikipedia often communicate through a national noticeboard, their national WikiProject and, much less frequently, at meetups. Auckland has hosted six meetups. At the first in June 2006, three of eight participants were women. At the second meetup, two of the eight participants were women; at the third in August 2007, two of twelve were women. At the fourth in October 2008, none of the five people attending were women. New Zealand editors are less visible on other projects, and in many cases the few Kiwis are male. Hi. I am female Wikipedian from the southern half of the North Island who has only recently returned to Wikipedia to check if things have changed much. I suspended my involvement just after (ironically) completing a survey on women's experiences of Wikipedia. Although I was aware I was a minority, I did not realise by how much. Knowing helped explain the (what seemed to me) perplexing behaviour of some of my fellow editors. I found out about this page through Maori Wikipedia, which I sometimes contributed to. In Nigeria, women's role were primarily governed by regional and ethic differences. In the north area, where Islamic practices were still common, education beyond primary school was restricted to the elites women. But, the establishment of women's secondary school, teacher college, and more women holding university placed, made a few women were appearing at all levels of offices and professional occupations. However, even with educated wives, women's presence at social gatherings was nonexistent or very restricted. Women in the south, especially the Yoruba peoples, had received Western style education since 19th century, so they occupied positions in the professionals and to some extend in politics.

A national feminist movement was inaugurated in 1982, and a national conference held at Ahmadu Bello University. The papers presented there indicated a growing awareness by Nigeria's university-educated women that the place of women in society required a concerted effort and a place on the national agenda; the public perception, however, remained far behind. Although women's status would undoubtedly rise, for the foreseeable future Nigerian women lacked the opportunities of men.

In 1850, Norwegian women status were considered as incapable, it was impossible to control their own money or entitle for any government job. They were lived under the authority of guardians, whether the father or husband. In 1845, a first step towards women's emancipation was taken with the "Law on the vast majority for single women," for which the age majority was granted at age 25, without a requirement for submitting to a guardian after that age. The fist wave of feminism in Norway was created by Camilla Collett, the first writer who broke down the obstacles of women's literature at that time and composed about education of bourgeois women in 1800s. As the results, in 1884-1885, some formal women's right organizations were established in Norway.Two significant laws were passed in 1888, the first law about married women gained majority status and the second law ended the authority of husband over the wives.

The second waves of feminism during 1960-1990, fought to obtain the same right as men. The 1960s were marked by many protests, the appearance of new ideas, and the first feminist writers of the second wave, though it was no longer enough to claim a female otherness. In the 1990s, feminism experienced some stagnation in Norway after more than twenty years of reform. Today, feminism is taking new forms. The associations and movements that grew out of the first and second wave of Norwegian feminism are adapting to these new structures, which are sometimes informal.

Historically, Peruvian women somewhat equal to men, but after the Spanish conquest the culture in Peru became increasingly patriarchal and they represent minority in numbers and legal rights. Jadwiga Andrychowska-Biegacz was a member of the Board in the years 2005-2007 and a member of the Grant Committee in the years 2006-2007. • As an Islamic state, women's rights in Saudi Arabia are defined by Islam and tribal customs. The Arabian peninsula is the ancestral home of patriarchal, nomadic tribes, in which purdah (separation of women and men) and namus (honor) are considered central. All women, regardless of age, are required to have a male guardian. Women cannot vote or be elected to high political positions. South Africa has eleven official languages, they are Afrikaans, English, Ndebele, Northern Sotho, Sotho, Swazi, Tswana, Tsonga, Venda, Xhosa and Zulu. While all the languages are formally equal, some languages are spoken more than others. According to the 2001 National Census, the three most spoken first home languages are Zulu (23.8%), Xhosa (17.6%), and Afrikaans (13.3%). Despite the fact that English is recognised as the language of commerce and science, it was spoken by only 8.2% of South Africans at home in 2001, an even lower percentage than in 1996 (8.6%).

Most African traditional social organizations are male centered and male dominated. Women in South Korea have experienced great social change in recent years following the miracle on the Han River, the country's rapid economic growth under the capitalist dictator Pak Chung-hee, and resultant increases in women's education and rights. Despite recent moves in favor of equality, South Korea remains a highly patriarchal society. By 1987 there were ten institutions of higher education for women including universities, colleges, and junior colleges; women accounted for approximately 28 percent of total enrollment in higher education. There were approximately 262,500 women students in colleges and universities in 1987. However, only about 16 percent of college and university teachers were women in 1987. The growing number of women receiving a college education has meant that their sex role differs from that of their mothers and grandmothers. Many college-educated women plan independent careers and challenge the right of parents to choose a marriage partner.

• Women in Thailand were among the first women in Asia who were granted the right to vote in 1932. However, they are still underrepresented in Thai politics. Factors that affect women's participation in the socio-economic field include "inadequate gender awareness in the policy and planning process" and social stereotyping. Female illiteracy is a major issue in Turkey, with 1 out of 5 women being unable to read or write. Illiteracy is particularly prevalent among rural women, who are often not sent to school as girls. The government and various other foundations are engaged in education campaigns in Southeastern Anatolia to improve the rate of literacy and education levels of women. A 2008 poll by the Women Entrepreneurs Association of Turkey showed that almost half of urban Turkish women believe economic independence for women is unnecessary reflecting, in the view of psychologist Leyla Navaro, a heritage of patriarchy. In 1980s, when women's movement gained impetus all over the world, there observed an increase in the number of voluntary women institutions established in Turkey. Through the mobilization of the general public, these women's institutions have played a significant part in leading the amendment and abolition of certain items discriminating women in both Civil Law and Penal Code and also have taken an active part in their consciousness-raising endeavors on women' problems. In recent years, alongside with the increase in the number of the centers for helping women who were victims of violence or abused, it is noticeable that the associations with special tasks of supporting and reinforcing the women's participation in politics have also come into being.

According to the Constitution, the state language of Ukraine is Ukrainian. Russian, which was the de facto official language of the Soviet Union, is widely spoken, especially in eastern and southern Ukraine. According to the 2001 census, 67.5 percent of the population declared Ukrainian as their native language and 29.6 percent declared Russian. Most native Ukrainian speakers know Russian as a second language. Ukrainian is mainly spoken in western and central Ukraine. In western Ukraine, Ukrainian is also the dominant language in cities (such as Lviv). In central Ukraine, Ukrainian and Russian are both equally used in cities, with Russian being more common in Kiev, while Ukrainian is the dominant language in rural communities. In eastern and southern Ukraine, Russian is primarily used in cities, and Ukrainian is used in rural areas.

In December 2011, according to Alexa, Wikipedia was ranked the 9th most popular site in the country.[410] The number of very active users (more than 100 edits per month) in Ukranian Wikipedia is 127 users in December 2011 while there are 707 active users (five edits per month).[411] In December 2011, there were 360 women of all ages from Ukraine who were interested in Wikipedia on Facebook.[412]

• Women in Ukraine have equal constitutional rights as men in the economic, political, cultural and social fields, as well as in the family. Women make up 54% of the population of Ukraine and 45% of its labor force. Over 60% of all Ukrainian women have higher education (college level and above). However, the unemployment rate of women is very high compared to men with the same educational background (80% of all unemployed in Ukraine are women), not to mention the extensive hidden unemployment among women. Labor laws establish the legal equality of men and women, including equal pay for equal work, a principle that generally was observed. However, industries dominated by female workers had the lowest relative wages and were the ones most likely to be affected by wage arrears.

The Chapter

At the present, there are no women on the board of Wikimedia UK. Panyd is a chapter volunteer who has specifically been working on women's outreach in the United Kingdom. Some of this outreach has been done at Geek Girl Dinners. Panyd has been attempting to connect with other women around the world to try to help them do similar out reach to women at Geek Girl events. Wikimedia UK has members putting together a bid to host Wikimania. This bid group has at least one female volunteer.

In December 2011, there were 135,340 women of all ages from United Kingdom who were interested in Wikipedia on Facebook.[416] In December 2011, according to Alexa, Wikipedia was ranked the 9th most popular site in the country.[417] In the period between November 2010 and October 2011, 5.6% of all Wikipedia traffic was from this country.[418] Panyd is also involved in administering Did you knows, and is an administrator on English Wikipedia.

There are no female British administrators on wikinews, nor are there any British women who are wikinews accredited reporters. Chapters

The United States has two active Wikimedia chapters: Wikimedia NYC and Wikimedia DC. Wikimedia NYC is active in regional outreach, and has successfully brought new female editors to Wikipedia through these programs. Wikimedia DC has also found success with outreach events and activities, and has the distinction of having three female Wikimedians on the Board of Directors. [426]

Wikimedia Foundation

The Wikimedia Foundation president is Sue Gardner (who is actually Canadian!). The Foundation employees 34 female staff and contractors (2 not listed currently), making them a unique leader in the open source technical community. Many are active Wikimedians as well, and/or have long standing histories within education, science and open source technology. [427]

The US serves as the home-base for the Wikimedia Foundation, in San Francisco, California. Phoebe Ayers and Kat Walsh are members of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees. Ayers lives and works in California, while Walsh, in the Washington, D.C. metro area. Both also have long histories of contributing to Wikipedia and related projects.

The 2011 Wikimedia Fundraiser is known for its unique tool of using written appeals to attract donors. While a number of women were featured, four women who live in the United States were featured on the front pages of Wikimedia projects around the world.[428]

The Wikimedia Foundation developed the 2011 Summer of Research, and had one female participant, researcher Melanie Kill, in the program. The leading team for the project had three staff members, including Maryana.

• FloNight; an administrator who has also served on Arbcom. She's been mentioned on the The Colbert Report due to her contributions!
• LoriLee; the second Wikipedian in Residence and the longest serving resident, she was recently appointed as the first US Cultural Partnerships Coordinator.
• Jgmikulay; is a college professor from Wisconsin who was one of the first professors to embrace the ambassador program in the US. She was a co-founder of WikiProject Public art and has worked with students at her women's college to develop WikiProject Lights Camera Wiki, which has had numerous videos created by female contributors uploaded to Wikimedia Commons.
• Dvortygirl is an admin and a bureaucrat on Wiktionary.
• Awadeit has contributed to a whopping 35 featured articles on English Wikipedia, and numerous good articles, mainly related to women's literature. She was also a guest on English Wikipedia's podcast, Wikipedia Weekly.
• Cindamuse is a part of Global Education's Ambassador Steering Committee, and is also an online ambassador for the program. She also has often overlooked Wikipedia powers such as rollback, reviewer, and file mover rights.
• Fluffernutter is a highly active administrator on English Wikipedia and is also an online ambassador. She's active offline as well and is a member of WM NY and attends events when time permits. She also has been a guest on Wikipedia Weekly.
• Aude is the president of Wikimedia DC. She's an admin on English Wikipedia, and is highly active in GLAM Outreach, helping to develop relationships between Wikimedia and the Smithsonian Institution. When not editing, she's serving as sponsorship director for Wikimania 2012 and an active leader in the OpenStreetMap project.
• Carolmooredc has been editing English Wikipedia since 2006, she's a 60+ year old editor active in politically charged subjects; both as a Wikipedia writer and an offline activist.
• Moonriddengirl has been an English Wikipedian since 2008 and in 2011 she became the community liaison for the Wikimedia Foundation (a temporary position). She has created over 373 Wikipedia articles.
• Sarah Stierch has served as the Wikipedian-in-Residence at the Archives of American Art, and is currently a Community Fellow at the Wikimedia Foundation focusing on the gendergap on Wikimedia projects. She's also an active content contributor on the English Wikipedia as well as the Wikimedia Commons.

In the United States, two women served as Wikipedians in Residence at cultural organizations as part of the GLAMWIKI outreach movement. The Wikimedia Campus Ambassador program also has 29 female participants from the US[429], and has worked wonders to bring female contributors to Wikipedia; however has struggled to retain those contributors.

Venezuela official language is Spanish and languages spoken by Indigenous people from Venezuela. There are at least 40 languages around Venezuela. Other languages spoken by foreigners and their descendants are found in Venezuela, among the most important are Chinese, Italian, Catalan, Basque, Galician, Portuguese, Arabic, English and French. Some people who live next to the border of Brazil speak Portuguese.

With a large gap, French is 2nd with 46961 users and German 3rd with 35982 users. The large population of Spanish users on Commons is probably the result of local uploads on Spanish Wikipedia being disabled.

The official national language of Vietnam is Vietnamese, a tonal monosyllabic Mon–Khmer language which is spoken by the majority of the population. The Vietnamese developed their own set of characters, referred to as Chữ nôm. Other languages spoken in Vietnam is French and Russian. However, both languages are losing their popularity since in recent years English has become more popular as a second language.

Wikipedia

In January 2012 Vietnamese Wikipedia rank 27 out of 280 Wikipedia languages. The number of very active users (more than 100 edits per month) in Vietnamese Wikipedia consist of only 41 users compared to 291 active users (five edits per month) in December 2011.[449] The country currently does not have a Wikimedia chapter, and efforts to create one is unknown. In December 2011, there were 880 women of all ages from Vietnam who were interested in Wikipedia on Facebook.[450] According to Alexa, Wikipedia is the 23th most popular sites in Vietnam. [451] Vietnamese Wikipedia is visited by 61.9% of readers, while 32.4% visited English Wikipedia.[452]

• Vietnamese women had played a significant role in Vietnam's history during the Vietnam War from 1945 to 1975. They defend their country by taking roles such as village patrol guards, intelligence agents, propagandists, and military recruiters. By becoming "active participants" in the struggle to liberate their country from foreign occupation, Vietnamese women were able to free themselves from "centuries of Confucian influence that had made them second-class citizens". Historically, this character and spirit of Vietnamese women were first exemplified by the conduct of the Trung sisters, the “first historical figures” in the history of Vietnam who revolted against Chinese control. This trait is also epitomized in the old Vietnamese adage: "When war comes, even women have to fight", and its variation: "When the enemy is at the gate, the woman goes out fighting".
