Welcome!
[edit]The Wikimedia Café provides a forum for voice (optionally inclusive of video) discussion of issues of broad interest among Wikimedia participants.
This month
[edit]This month's focus will be Wikimedia governance, including possible follow-ups to the abandoned Movement charter process. Note that to de-conflict the Café from Wikimania, the meeting will be held 1 day later than usual.
Agenda. This will be an approximately 1 hour Café session.
[edit]- Preliminaries
- 3 minute buffer for late arrivals & microphone checks
- Self-introductions
- Café norms
- Overview of the agenda
- Main section
- Presentation. (Approximately 20 minutes. There may be a follow-up in a later Café session.)

- Strengthen the independence of the Elections Committee from the WMF Board
- Board composition change. See en:User:Doc James/Bylaws
- Transform WMF into a membership organization, but consider the privacy risks.

- Separate the endowment from WMF
- Discussion (approximately 25 minutes)
- Mention the Governance Study Group
- Next steps & closure ← (5 minutes)
How to attend the session
[edit]If you would like to attend then please sign below at least 30 minutes before the start of the session. A Google Meet link will be emailed to you before the start of the session, using Special:EmailUser.
- Before the scheduled start time of the Café, please verify that you can successfully use Google Meet.
- To improve the chances of Café meetings being valuable and positive experiences for intermediate to advanced participants:
- A prerequisite for attending the Café is that your Wikimedia account has 500 or more edits on a single wiki with an account that is 30 or more days old, consistent with English Wikipedia's policy for extendedconfirmed group membership. You may fulfill this requirement on any Wikimedia project.
- Your account must have no active blocks visible in Special:CentralAuth. Waivers to this requirement may be granted if you can make a convincing case to User:Pine for an exception, such as if the block was self-requested.
- Having at least beginner knowledge of the English language is helpful, but feel free to attend and simply listen if your English is too limited for you to feel comfortable speaking it. Additionally, you are welcome to use text translation tools to post translated text into the meeting chat.

- Potentially in the same meeting: https://diff.wikimedia.org/2026/06/11/wikipedias-account-creation-process-is-broken/
- Potentially in the same meeting: Wikimedia Foundation elections/2025/Debrief
- Conversation with WMF Legal regarding some issues for Commons.
- In the 3rd or 4th quarter of calendar year 2026 / 1st or 2nd quarter of WMF fiscal year 2026-2027: conversation with User:SDeckelmann-WMF
- https://editbetter.vercel.app/
- Conversation with WMF regarding how to navigate funding options, and the amount of time required for both requesters & WMF on finding, requesting, and processing funding. Possibly also discuss external funding, such as Partnerships & Resource Development/Resources & Documentation and Affiliate fundraising materials. Amount of administrative overhead time spent searching for, applying to, and reporting on projects. Could finding funding be made more automated and/or more of the administrative work be shifted away from requesters grants staff in WMF, affiliates, and/or hubs?
- Related: review the progress of hubs
- Future cafe topic: what's happening with health of wikiprojects? How do they tie into new user experience? Maybe contact James Hare. CMD: problem with consolidating wikiprojects is that merging tools that are specific to projects is technically complicated. There's a en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Inactive project
- Invite Sam Walton (WMF) back in a few months to discuss the ongoing work regarding moderator tools & the new contributor experience. For the latter, potentially also discuss https://diff.wikimedia.org/2026/06/11/wikipedias-account-creation-process-is-broken/ and invite Kirsten Stoller (WMF)
- Convenient Discussions. Compare these to Flow / Structured Discussions, and VE on talk pages. ↠Pine (✉) 19:29, 14 June 2026 (UTC)
- Wikimedia Futures Lab discussion, maybe in June. Also see this Diff post
- August 2026 meeting with a focus on interactive graphics ===
- Schedule to be determined.

[edit]- Anyone can review & edit the shared notes in Etherpad. For long-term storage, the reports may later be copied into Wikimedia Café/reports.
- Café sessions are not usually recorded in full, but anyone can take & share notes.
Meeting conduct & disclaimer
[edit]- Café sessions are not usually recorded in full, but anyone can take & share notes.
- Civility is expected in the Café, although expressions of strong opinions may happen. If a conversation becomes too acrimonious then the hosts may end discussion of that topic, require certain participants to leave a Café session, or take other measures to keep order in the Café.
- Wikimedia Café sessions are not officially endorsed, supervised, or directly financially sponsored by the Wikimedia Foundation. The Café sessions receive limited support in the sense that announcements and other communications may be hosted on infrastructure that is owned by the Wikimedia Foundation. Staff, contractors, grantees, or trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation may be guests in Café sessions. Opinions and statements made in Café sessions might not represent those of the Wikimedia Foundation.
