The Wikimedia Café provides a forum for voice (optionally inclusive of video) discussion of issues of broad interest among Wikimedia participants.

This month

This month's focus will be Wikimedia governance, including possible follow-ups to the abandoned Movement charter process. Note that to de-conflict the Café from Wikimania, the meeting will be held 1 day later than usual.

A brief history of 2030 Strategy and the Movement Charter process
A brief overview of the WMF Board selection process, and changes to it through history. Discuss the removal of candidates in the most recent selection process. See Wikimedia Foundation elections/2025/Debrief.
Options for reforms

Strengthen the independence of the Elections Committee from the WMF Board
Board composition change. See en:User:Doc James/Bylaws
Transform WMF into a membership organization, but consider the privacy risks.
Strengthen the WMF Audit Committee and more clearly separate it from the rest of the WMF Board
Separate WMF into 2 organizations, one for grantmaking and one for technology
Move more work from WMF to other organizations such as affiliates
Separate the endowment from WMF

How to attend the session

If you would like to attend then please sign below at least 30 minutes before the start of the session. A Google Meet link will be emailed to you before the start of the session, using Special:EmailUser.

Before the scheduled start time of the Café, please verify that you can successfully use Google Meet.
To improve the chances of Café meetings being valuable and positive experiences for intermediate to advanced participants:
1. A prerequisite for attending the Café is that your Wikimedia account has 500 or more edits on a single wiki with an account that is 30 or more days old, consistent with English Wikipedia's policy for extendedconfirmed group membership. You may fulfill this requirement on any Wikimedia project.
2. Your account must have no active blocks visible in Special:CentralAuth. Waivers to this requirement may be granted if you can make a convincing case to User:Pine for an exception, such as if the block was self-requested.
3. Having at least beginner knowledge of the English language is helpful, but feel free to attend and simply listen if your English is too limited for you to feel comfortable speaking it. Additionally, you are welcome to use text translation tools to post translated text into the meeting chat.

Conversation with WMF regarding how to navigate funding options, and the amount of time required for both requesters & WMF on finding, requesting, and processing funding. Possibly also discuss external funding, such as Partnerships & Resource Development/Resources & Documentation and Affiliate fundraising materials. Amount of administrative overhead time spent searching for, applying to, and reporting on projects. Could finding funding be made more automated and/or more of the administrative work be shifted away from requesters grants staff in WMF, affiliates, and/or hubs?
