Contacting you (appeal on Commons does not work)

I followed the instruction in the alert that indicated to contact you by mail (your talk page was not accessible). Visibly you received that mail (without it you would not have even seen this page) :

"Le blocage a été effectué par -revi. La raison invoquée est la suivante : Intimidation/harassment: COM:AN."

I contest this accusation, I've never used "personnal" attacks, and it was not a "continuous" attack since I just replied today in a few minutes (well I was reediting it when you, revi, modified the page, si there was an edit conflict to post the second part and could not fix the first part.

You've used an emergency soltuion as if my SINGLE message on the noticeboard was harmful to anyone.

Do you base your decision on my last sentence about the "questionable position" of Steinwalker as an admin ? How do you feel this is a "personal" attack? It was extremely important to rectify things because I have made everything to prepare a request (for which I never said it was urgent).

Since the begining of the thread, I was only "informative" (and all the rest in the talk page is informative as well and the way it is done, is useful for others to understand the issue whise origin is a very old bug/inconsistency of MediaWiki in the PAGENAME magic keyword.

But yes, I was replying to Steinwalker because he was the one that "fulfilled" my request (but not the way it was described, because he did more than what was asked).

Each time he has asked me something, I have done it and given him the exact and accurate response, exactly what he asked.

I was extremely short to reply him each time (he cannot say that my details given in the Template talk page are too long for him if he just refused to read it, even if the ctiondo do was correctly summarized and presented in that talk page, with the important thing to do very clearly emphasized and framed with the exact code, plus the exact code in the template sandbox, because he also requested it, and I provided it to him as well with a link to it in the noticeboard)

No, he has never read and never considered that I had fulfilled everything he wanted.

Then he chose to act _3_days_ after my last one-line reply to his "confirmation" question. (I had not added anything else in that time.

I was never rude about him during this request. I just commented the fact that he had not done what was described, he did more (using some automatic edits such as search/replace-all.

And yes after he did it, I had to test the change. As it was OK, I did not add anything else on the notice board. But Steingwalker this morning added a on the noticeboard and I just wanted to reply him once. To alert him that what he did was not exactly what was confirmed.

Is it "incivil" in Commons to post comments about how requests have been done ? Every edit is discussable, and I've never seen any admin blocking someone because another contributer posted a reply on a talk page describing waht was done on the wiki. (I've not commented about who is Steinwalker but only about what he has done, my single message, absolutely not continuous, is definitely not personnal and not continuous).

Do you feel it is continous because I used a 4-point reply to his own 4-point reply on the notice board ?

I have offered him multiple times an accurate place to discuss it (the template talk page) but he refused to do it. Where could I have done that?

I always left my posts with opened questions to avoid blocking the situation (look for the question marks): in those sentence I was not affirmative. I don't know why you feel that I am offensive (which words?)

I know it ias hard to explain things online (after all we don't know each other personnally).

So yes the situation is extremely frustrating, when I'm blocked now for - having done everything that was asked to me and for explaining to others what we are doing on Commons (notably in places that could potentially break many other pages such as editing heavily used templates), - or because I was adding other small comments when I discovered similar isses on other pages I could fix, and that the same issue could affect other pages/templates as well.

The details I gave in the tlak page was usable as a reference for explaining other similar changes. It can be used as well to justify a change in MediaWiki for its old bug of the PAGENAME magic keyword family (requested since very long but never corrected, always considered non urgent : instead MediaWiki was fixed in #ifeq and #switch so that they would HTML-decode their input parameter (this caused new compatibility issues, that have been solved later).

But the issue remained in PAGESINCAT: (and in potentially many other extensions), only because of the bug of the PAGENAME magic keywords family. This is precious information, in my opinion to share to other users of MediaWiki, and notably admins that are fixing tricky templates heavily used....

So instead of being thanked for pointing the issue and explaning it (there's nothing personnal in that), I'm now blocked only for commenting what was actually done.

I'm just frustrated by your decision. I d'ont think I was offensive with anyone, and I made lots of efforts trying to explain things to Steinwalker on Commons, and doing everything he asked for. Anyway I will not insist for these two days... When I tried it the first time, it was not possible, when I followed the URL in the message, to send you an email, as instructed by the block message, you refused it. Your way is not standard if we need to exploire your user page to see what to do, and where... Then I posted on my talk page and it was clearly not noticed. I've not seen anything here that prohibited your talk page (this was possible, anyone can noramlyl post to a talk page with your type of blocking).
Sorry but I've not used this procedure and I have never blocked any one (even if you feel irritated of reexplining what seems obvious to you, it is not for others, so be patient here, you'll need to reexplain to those that follow the standard procedure when you want something else which is not so obvious)..

감사합니다. Where is VP/Misc? To be more specific, my proposal would affect all Korean wikis, but I am explaining it further at RfC. Does Korean Wikipedia have any policy or guideline on when to or not to annotate hanja? For example, ko:국제 태권도 연맹 already has 대한태권도협회(大韓跆拳道協會) & 국기원(國技院). If Korean Wikipedia would accept my proposal, these hanja compounds would be in the footnotes.--Jusjih (talk) 02:08, 7 April 2015 (UTC)

Could you please block the user Dusty Periwinkle has been adding inappropriate and unwanted messages to the TIPwiki page, the Guilties, and has probably done it elsewhere as well. Early invitation: join VisualEditor's 2015 Translathon

Hello!

You are invited to join the 2nd edition of the VisualEditor Translathon! It is a translation rally, focused on interface messages and help pages related to VisualEditor.

In order to participate, you need to sign up on the Translathon page. The top 3 contributors will each win a Wikipedia t-shirt of their choice from the Wikipedia store.[1] Translations made between July 15th and July 19th (CDT time zone) qualify.[2]

If you are attending Wikimania Mexico this year, you are also welcome to join a related sprint during the Hackathon in Workplace 1 - Don Américo, Thursday 16 July at 4:00 p.m (CDT) at the conference venue, so you can meet other fellow translators and get support if you need some.

Interface messages have the priority. You will need to create an account at translatewiki.net in order to work on them, if you don't have one. It is recommended to create the account ASAP, so that it can be manually confirmed in time.

You can also help translate documentation pages about VisualEditor on mediawiki.org. You can use your Wikipedia account there. You will find instructions, links and other details on the Translathon page.

Automated bot should not overrule sysop's judgement

I do not understand the concern here. What sysop's judgement would the bot be overruling by redirecting redirects from redirects to articles? I do not maintain watchlists of any kind so please just highlight me when and if you respond. -- とある白い猫 chi? 14:56, 26 September 2015 (UTC)

Korean Wikipedia has a fully-protected redirect due to rename dispute. Since they also modified the redirection target, the protecting sysop decided to protect both article. Well, in this case, If you move 'em, it would overrule sysop's judgement, isn't it? @とある白い猫 — regards, Revi 04:12, 27 September 2015 (UTC)
Indeed such issues are problematic but the bot would not move a redirect or an article. I think there is a bit of a confusion. Let me give an example:
  • So say there is an article named "Foo"
  • And there is a redirect "Bar" pointing towards "Foo", the only content of this page would be something like "#REDIRECT Foo"
  • At some point "Foo" was moved to "Foo2"
  • Now the page Bar still has "#REDIRECT Foo" but now Foo also has "#REDIRECT Foo2".
  • People navigate to Bar will see the content "#REDIRECT Foo2" instead of the article. They would need to click on Foo2 to navigate to the article.
  • What the bot would only do is replace "#REDIRECT Foo" with "#REDIRECT Foo2". So no article would be moved. The edits would be like this. The bot merely processes instructions at Special:DoubleRedirects.
This is how redirects are normally formed and fixed vast majority of the time. Redirects are also formed if a username is renamed more than once. On some wikis they protect the userpage and user talk page of the older username. Also bear in mind that unless it is a redirect pointing to another redirect the bot would not make a modification of any kind. You sometimes get redirect chains too.
In your example I imagine the articles are protected and so are the redirects. So in such a case only admins can move the pages in question. In such a case a double redirect would only form through admin actions. The bot would only enforce such a decision not counter it. If an admin moves the page again at a later point (based on consensus for example), the bot would re-fix the newly formed double redirects pointing them to the new article name. This would be similar to how it played out on this page in the past few years. The idea here is to avid a situation where the reader is stuck at a "REDIRECT" page even if the redirect page is protected.

I run my bot 24/7 on all wikis except two that want to handle double redirects by hand for whatever the reason. I am sure you can appreciate the kind of backlog notifying local admins on double redirects would bring on me and more importantly them. I would have to explain something like what I explained above to perhaps users that do not have good English skills.
I never claimed that page was protected. It is just a page that is a good analogy of the problem. I do not see why the bot would have needed to act differently even if that page was protected. I just cannot see how the bot fixing double redirects would overrule a local sysop in any way. I think it is the opposite, by allowing admins to protect redirects and not worry about the maintenance of double redirects, we are letting them protect redirects more liberally to contain page rename disputes to the article page in question rather than on multiple redirects.

Please sign new Wikimedia confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information by 31 December

As you may know, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees approved a new "Access to nonpublic information policy" on 25 April 2014 after a community consultation. The former policy has remained in place until the new policy could be implemented. That implementation work is now being done, and we are beginning the transition to the new policy.

An important part of that transition is helping volunteers like you sign the required confidentiality agreement. All Wikimedia volunteers with access to nonpublic information are required to sign this new agreement, and we have prepared some documentation to help you do so.

The Wikimedia Foundation is requiring that OTRS volunteers sign the new confidentiality agreement by 31 December 2015 to retain their access. You are receiving this email because you have been identified as an OTRS volunteer and are required to sign the confidentiality agreement under the new policy. If you do not sign the new confidentiality agreement by 31 December 2015, you will lose your OTRS access. OTRS volunteers have a specific agreement available, if you have recently signed the general confidentiality agreement for another role (such as CheckUser or Oversight), you do not need to sign the general agreement again, but you will still need to sign the OTRS agreement.

Signing the confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information is conducted and tracked using Legalpad on Phabricator. We have prepared a guide on Meta-Wiki to help you create your Phabricator account and sign the new agreement: Confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information/How to sign

If you have any questions or experience any problems while signing the new agreement, please visit this talk page or email me (gvarnum(_AT_)wikimedia.org). Again, please sign this confidentiality agreement by 31 December 2015 to retain your OTRS access.
