This page hosts requests to stewards and global renamers for a username change across the entire Wikimedia network. Please read the instructions before posting a request.

This is also the page where the usurpation of inactive accounts can be requested.

SUL finalization

If you are requesting a merge of a global account with one or more unconnected local accounts as part of finalizing your single unified login (SUL) username, please specify which wikis and accounts you want to merge into your global account. These accounts were typically named "account name~wikiname". Please note that we can only merge a local account into a global account when the global account has no edits on the same wiki as the local account.

Making a request for your own account

For changing your username on one wiki:

Please include the following information in your request:

  • the old username,
  • the new username,
  • please sign ~~~~ request with your account for a simple move (first section), or sign this request with both the originating and the target accounts if you are requesting a merge (second section).

If anything is missing from your request, a steward will request more information. This helps ensure that you are requesting a rename for your own account. Please check before posting your request that the username you want is available.

You can test that by going to the (new) user page and looking into the sidebar. If there is a link to user contributions, the account already exists, or check via Special:CentralAuth.

Private requests

Account renames are not private, once renamed many links from the old username to the new username will be permanently made. The reason submitted on the rename form (Special:GlobalRenameRequest) is private, and only visible by the renamers. Additional information that needs to be made in private may be sent using this direct wiki-email interface while logged-in.


Simple rename requests

If your rename request is simple and does not involve usurpation of an existing account or other SUL issues, you have two options:

  1. Use the request form at Special:GlobalRenameRequest; or
  2. Submit the request below in this section.

Please use this tool to check if the username is taken before filing a request.

Requests involving merges, usurps or other complications

Please add new requests at the end of the section. Sections should be titled your username and requests should be signed by the requesting user.
Please note: Per standard procedure and consensus, accounts with valid edits are not usurped, and the target account must be notified by renamer at least two weeks before usurpation.

@DreamRimmer @Tanbiruzzaman Hello.I have been seaching for an aproprite and meaningful username, which led me to change my username twice. Each time I attempted to choose a new one, I was informed that it had already been taken. I was not aware that a request page like this existed for unused usernames; a Persian Wikipedia administrator kindly directed me here. The username I am requesting is my given name, and having it would be very helpful for my contributions and future work across Wikimedia projects. I can assure you that I will keep this username permanently and will not request further changes.

I object to the usurpation of my account. I wish to keep my current username, and I do not authorize any renaming or changes.

@Grandnewbien: Please do not post new requests, and feel free to message me on my talk page if you have any questions. The Grandnewbien account was not part of this rename, so the edits attached to it remain unchanged. Since you wanted a username with a capital N, we proceeded with GrandNewbien, and after renaming GrandKokla to GrandNewbien, all your edits moved to that username. – DreamRimmer ■ 06:00, 11 December 2025 (UTC)[reply]
