Instructions[edit]

Before posting here[edit]

Please list the specific projects that you need to be renamed in under your request, unless you are requesting a global rename.

How to add an entry here[edit]

To add an entry, please copy and paste the text below into the appropriate section.

=== Oldname ===
{{SRUC
|status =
|domain = global
|Oldname =
|Newname =
|reason = (your remarks here)
--~~~~
}}

Making a request for your own account[edit]

For changing your username on one wiki:

Please include the following information in your request:

  • the old username,
  • the new username,
  • please sign ~~~~ request with your account for a simple move (first section), or sign this request with both the originating and the target accounts if you are requesting a merge (second section).

If anything is missing from your request, a steward will request more information. This helps ensure that you are requesting a rename for your own account. Please check before posting your request that the username you want is available. You can test that by going to the (new) user page and looking into the sidebar. If there is a link to user contributions, the account already exists, or check via Special:CentralAuth.

Private requests[edit]

Requests that need to be made in private should be sent to stewards(at)wikimedia.org (direct wiki-email interface).

Simple rename requests[edit]

If your rename request is simple and does not involve usurpation of an existing account or other SUL issues, you have two options:

  1. Use the request form at Special:GlobalRenameRequest; or
  2. Submit the request below in this section.

Please use this tool to check if the username is taken before filing a request.

Globalomnium@global[edit]

@Globalomnium: El nombre que solicitas puede ser considerado inaceptable en otros proyectos. En general debes evitar usar nombres de usuario que impliquen que eres o trabajas para una compañía. ¿Sería posible que escogieses otro nombre de usuario? Gracias, —MarcoAurelio 13:09, 5 January 2017 (UTC)
@MarcoAurelio: Ok. He comprobado que Periodista está disponible. Globalomnium (talk) 10:01, 9 January 2017 (UTC)
@Globalomnium: No, lo siento, Periodista (talk • contribs • block • x-wiki • CA • lwcheckuser) ya existe. Por favor escoge otro nombre. Puedes comprobar en Special:CentralAuth el nombre que desees para saber si está libre. Saludos, —MarcoAurelio 19:14, 12 January 2017 (UTC)

Requests involving merges, usurps or other complications[edit]

Please add new requests at the end of the section. Sections should be titled your username and requests should be signed by the requesting user.
Please note: Per standard procedure, accounts with valid edits are not usurped, and the target account must be notified at least one month before usurpation.

@Pokéfan95: I tried, but I couldn't get the usurpation template to work. Ypna (talk) 07:43, 23 December 2016 (UTC)
@Ypna: You may manually make a message for the target user instead, if the usurpation template won't work. Don't forget to link the message here. Pokéfan95 (talk) 08:16, 23 December 2016 (UTC)

@RadiX:Done. What is the next step?--Koshi2016 (talk) 03:43, 29 December 2016 (UTC)
Hi Koshi2016, can you link to this request on the target user's talk page? Make sure they know what to do in case they object to usurpation (Which is to simply state that they do not wish to be usurped). You can use Template:Usurpation requested/ja to notify the user about this request. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 03:48, 29 December 2016 (UTC)

@Agastya Chandrakant: According to our records, it appears that you have been renamed before. Please note that username changes take up valuable server resources and are not something to be treated lightly. Are you sure you wish to proceed?
If so, please notify the target user on their home wiki talk page about this request (You may use Template:Usurpation requested to do this). —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 03:52, 7 January 2017 (UTC)

Gwaur@enwiki[edit]

Continuing from here which got archived while I was on vacation. @K6ka: Please do it. Whether the editor is currently active is irrelevant, the point here is repairing informational damage caused by the renaming of the user. Thanks. — Scott talk 01:12, 9 January 2017 (UTC)

@Scott: If there's anybody that can do anything about this, it's a steward, and I'm unfortunately not one (The most I can do is to rename the entire global account which would probably make things worse). —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 01:20, 9 January 2017 (UTC)
Oh, I see, because you marked the request as not done I thought you were a steward. Hopefully one can help. — Scott talk 01:22, 9 January 2017 (UTC)
It would be technically possible to complete this request, but with the user inactive I'm not seeing any strong need to. There are no attribution issues with the two usernames, and if they ever come back the accounts can be merged. There's no way of fully merging them while the user isn't active anyway. – Ajraddatz (talk) 06:16, 10 January 2017 (UTC)
Why do you not consider basic data integrity and maintaining the historical record a strong need? Like I agreed on the original post, a full merge isn't necessary, just renaming the enwiki user back to what it was. Thanks, — Scott talk 22:47, 10 January 2017 (UTC)
Data integrity is already there; there are no attribution issues with changing a username, even in a forced way with SUL finalization. We could go through and fix all these errors with SUL finalization, but unless it is at the request of the user I don't see much need to. I'm not closing this as not done though, if another steward wants to action this I won't object. It just seem like a make-work project to me (not necessarily this one case, but the precedent of trying to fix every other error without involving the actual user in question). I hope that makes some sense. – Ajraddatz (talk) 01:02, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
In a purely mechanistic sense data integrity is there. But as presented to the human user of the system, it isn't. Every link to that user's user page and user talk page on enwiki is now red. Yes, you can click a red user link and be presented with a message saying the user has been renamed; but you also may not be presented with one. This extremely poor UX is a consequence of the extremely poor implementation of the system, and will probably never be resolved given current development practices. Such a situation is barely tolerable for users that were forcibly renamed for the legitimate reason of a conflict, but pointless to allow to exist in the case of a user that was renamed unnecessarily. As an enwiki admin with a particular interest in maintaining the integrity of the archive for readers - who have been our prime consideration in building this project since day 1 - I hope another steward will rectify this. By the way, regarding "make-work", I'm pretty sure you've now spent more time arguing against doing this than it would have taken to do it in the first place. — Scott talk 13:09, 13 January 2017 (UTC)

StanProg@global[edit]

Hi @StanProg:, this account doesn't seem to be eligible for usurpation. If the target user consents to usurpation, we can process this request; if they don't respond within a month or if they object, however, we can't usurp this name. Sorry. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 00:00, 12 January 2017 (UTC)

Вик Ретлхед@mkwiki[edit]

Hi Вик Ретлхед. Are you trying to merge the two accounts together? Please note that it is not currently possible to merge accounts, as the SUL merge tool brought up too many problems during development and isn't expected to be available anytime soon. —k6ka 🍁 (Talk · Contributions) 00:03, 12 January 2017 (UTC)
If that's not possible, how about usurpation of the Retrohead account and leaving those three edits I made from the Retrohead account as IP adress?--Вик Ретлхед (talk) 19:02, 12 January 2017 (UTC)
@Вик Ретлхед and Retrohead: I can work some magic on this one. I'll rename the existing Retrohead account to Retrohead (usurped), rename Вик Ретлхед to Retrohead, and then merge the individual enwiki account back to the new Retrohead SUL. I just need to confirm that you are using the same password for both accounts first (I don't need to know what it is obviously, just that it is the same) – Ajraddatz (talk) 01:06, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
It's the same password, and the same guy (me). Those three edits from the Retrohead account on the Macedonian wiki were mistakenly done as I though the accounts were merged on all Wikis, not just the English one. No need for Retrohead (usurped), just leave the IP address there and have the Вик Ретлхед edits transferred to Retrohead. Please be aware that this operation is only for the Macedonian wiki edition. The English is fine, no need for changes there.--Вик Ретлхед (talk) 12:24, 13 January 2017 (UTC)
@Вик Ретлхед and Retrohead: Done. Please access mk:Special:MergeAccount at your earliest convenience while logged in to merge your global account. Please let us know if you encounter any issue. Savhñ 16:18, 14 January 2017 (UTC)

User has been notified in their home wiki. Also verifying that request to change this account from Erbigon → to BingoBot is valid. --Erbigon (talk) 20:24, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
Unfortunately, that account has enough edits that it cannot be usurped without the permission of the owner. Given that they haven't logged in in at least two years, that seems unlikely to get. – Ajraddatz (talk) 22:30, 17 January 2017 (UTC)
