Translator, We need you![edit]

Dear Addihockey10,

You have helped us in previous years with translations and for that we are most grateful. Now we turn towards the 2011/12 fundraiser. It may seem forever away, but work has already begun getting everything ready to go. This year we want to have landing pages covering as many countries in as many languages as possible.

Right now, we want to figure out who is interested in translating for the fundraiser. This year we're hoping to have more of a solidified "core" group of translators that we can count on to have work done by a few key dates, but we'd also welcome help from people who are willing to just help out when they can.

If you would be interested please take a look at this little sign-up survey and fill it out http://survey.wikimedia.org/index.php?sid=13638&newtest=Y&lang=en. With that we can start building a list of people and filling any gaps in the languages we serve.

Many Thanks

Range blocks[edit]

Hey, Addihockey. Are you sure about all those range blocks on Outreach? I don't have the info you used to block them, but those appear to be too much restriction when comparing with the benefit we can have. As I don't have full information from IP, I might be wrong though. Cheers.” Teles (T @ L C S) 11:54, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, I've compiled a list of those IPs over time, and calculated those ranges as small as possible so that they didn't cause collateral damage. Unfortunately some of the ranges they use are very large. I've enabled talk page access so that if there are any problems we can deal with them. I can e-mail you the list of IPs that this info has been pulled from. Thanks Addihockey10 19:08, 27 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

January 2012[edit]

  • I recently reverted your replacement of a PNG image with an SVG. I understand, and am all for, the widespread use of SVG images on the web and on Wikipedia - I help maintain the SVG article, have created several SVGs myself on Commons, and help to maintain others there. However, the image in question is a pen, ink, pencil and coloured pencil artwork, created in the 19th Century. Just because someone has created a monochrome SVG of this artwork, does not mean that it is a faithful reproduction compared to the photographic version. Have a brief look at the two images at full resolution to see what I mean. Automated edits may be useful in some places, but that kind of blind adherence to over-simplistic rules is not helpful. --Nigelj (talk) 23:10, 24 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Ew, sorry about that. It turns out that this was a bitmap image uploaded as .svg - hence the failure on the render. Someone is making an actual vector image of it :-) Thanks for noticing! Addihockey10 05:09, 6 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

I've ask to grant your bot the bot status on br:Wikipedia:Bot.

Replace superseded raster images with vectorized counterparts it a graet work, thank you.

Sadly, the comments are in french : « Bot : remplacement de l'image par son équivalent SVG - Fichier:ACDF oblique annotated english.png → Fichier:ACDF oblique annotated english.svg » (with red links :( ) could you put it in breton ? « Bot : erlerc'hiañ ar restr gant ar memes e SVG - Restr:XXX.png → Restr:YYY.svg ».

I've an other request about file replacement : on br.wp there is some (around 1000) old locals files that are already on Commons (with differents names). If I provid you a list of replacements, could your bot do this work ?

Addihockey10 - would you mind next time to put the links which are related into one section on the requests for blacklisting? Please stop editing the German Wikipedia[edit]

To let you know: You can not replace an image in an imagemap if the two images do not have exactly the same size and shapes. This makes the imagemap unusable. --TMg 20:19, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Also I would like to know why your bot does this PNG to SVG replacements? We never did such replacements with a bot in the German Wikipedia. Who requested this and where? How do you choose the images? A lot of the images are not the same. They are completely different (like here and here), have different sizes and use different colors. I just checked a few of the edits and found a lot of very disputable examples. In conclusion: Please stop your bot, at least in the German Wikipedia. These edits should not be done by a bot. This should be done by the people who understand the meaning of these images. --TMg 20:40, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I found your bot request in the German Wikipedia. You are talking about "non-controversial tasks such as replacing raster images with vector equivelents". I'm very sorry but I think this is very disputable as explained above. An "vector version available" template does not mean "you must destroy the old image". In many cases it means "there is a vector version that hopefully delivers the same meaning, you should take a look at it". There are only a few cases where it means "the vector version is proved to be a full replacement". But this requires a decision by a human and can't be done by a bot. --TMg 21:03, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello; Addihockey10 (automated) is not a bot, but rather a script that allows me to quickly replace .png/gif/tif/jpg's with a scaleable vector image. Most of them are non-controversial, however there are a few which are in the grey area, and since I am only a mere human I do sometimes make mistakes. The imagemap thing was an honest mistake, sorry about that. On the other hand, many images aren't exactly the same but if they convey the same data in a similar fashion the colours shouldn't really matter unless it is a map which has colours described etc. but we won't go there. Sorry for any mistakes and please do inform me in the future of such issues. Thank you. --Addihockey10 (Diskussion) 00:11, 10. Jul. 2012 (CEST)
There's no consensus wether PNGs should be replaced by SVGs. Most coat of arms replacements aren't acceptable. Meanwhile all your edits have been reverted. Replacements must be reviewed each for itself and not be done by a script. --Matthiasb (CallMyCenter) 00:16, 10. Jul. 2012 (CEST)
Hello, as I have said I do review the images and I approve/decline every diff. There is the odd slip of the hand but I don't think that's exactly grounds for a mass-revert of valid edits for which consensus was not obtained to perform. I please ask that you undo your reverts as you've undone many valid edits with the rationale being that I made a couple of mistakes. Vector images aren't going to be exactly the same as the raster image, I've noticed that in reviewing hundreds of images. --Addihockey10 (Diskussion) 00:27, 10. Jul. 2012 (CEST)
All of your edits are controversial. As explained above the template does not mean anybody should replace all these images without knowing anything about the subject. I don't see why you are doing this since nobody requested these replacements. In many cases you are replacing valid images with different images without asking the people who choose the original image in the first place. In other cases your edits are simply disturbing. Nothing is better if a 15 pixel wide arrow is replaced with another 15 pixel wide arrow. It looks exactly the same. The old image is not wrong. There is no need to kill the old image. All you do is flooding our watch lists and therefor wasting our time. Obviously you don't know what you are doing. So we asking you to stop and let other people decide if an image should be replaced with a different or not. --TMg 23:07, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Here is an other example that proves you have no idea what you are doing. You didn't even looked at what you did. --TMg 23:15, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Instead of complaining about the replacements, has it ever occured that it would be much more helpful to append a 150px or such to the image rather than obtusely and blindly reverting every edit? I take it that you believe that this, this, this, this, this, this, this, and this are controversial. That's your opinion, just as how I think some of the images should be replaced with vectorized equivalents. You have not gathered community consensus to undo those edits and I find it a bit odd that you (and maybe a few others) believe that it's appropriate to revert all of these without consulting the community first. Regards, -Addihockey10 (talk) 23:35, 9 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
We find it odd that you believe that it's appropriate to change all these articles without consulting the community first. We discussed this many times in many places and (as Matthiasb said above) there is no consensus to replace these files. You did not discussed. Your turn. Additionally, as I said above even such edits are controversial because it does not change anything. All it does is wasting our time. --TMg 00:52, 10 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough, I won't do the arrows then. However that does not excuse reverting helpful edits. As far as I'm concerned I was approved to perform this task, and so I will use my freedom as an editor to well, edit! You have provided no reason for your reversions of helpful edits and I would appreciate if you gave a reason. Yes, I did err a few times, but that doesn't mean everything I do is wrong. Since you've said "All your edits are controversial" you must have reviewed all my edits, otherwise that would be an incongruous judgement, you're saying that the diffs in my previous message are improper edits and are controversial. That is an opinion; your opinion is not fact and neither is mine. I don't have the right to mass-revert your edits because I don't like them and neither should you. I've explained my error, what's done is done but that still doesn't excuse the mass-revertsions. Please resolve this issue and then we can take it to the appropriate medium of discussion. Regards, -Addihockey10 (talk) 01:13, 10 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
So let's talk about this. What's the value of the edit? You replace a map of Africa and its surrounding by a map of Africa where the surrounding is missing. Okay, you can say, what's the matter, it shows the whole continent, and the Arab Peninsular is Asia. But so is the Sinai. Whoever made File:Africa-countries-UEMOA.svg does not know really about geography and appearantly even less about cartography. So why exchange a correct map by a less correct one? – Next one. Appearantly the PNG-Flag uses another red than the SVG. Did you verify which red is correct? The German WP does have a well functioning flagproject (w:de:Portal:Flaggenkunde) which should be asked firstly. Never ever change flags without consulting with them. No this one. Again, which light blue is correct? If other language versions of Wikipedia do not have problems with original research, okay, but leave alone the German WP. --Matthiasb (talk) 07:06, 10 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

so let's sum up. if the files are more or less identical, Matthiasb and TMg argue that replacing with .svgs is useless, and if they are not, they argue that it needs community consensus first, which at least explains why they find all edits "controversial". have there been discussions prior to this incident with respect to whether it is acceptable/desired, at least in the case of equivalent replacement options, to implement these changes? probably yes, and Matthiasb hints to it, too, so could someone perhaps provide a link to such a discussion? i believe it could help illustrating both side's point. otherwise it might be helpful if such a discussion is initiated somewhere on dewiki, say WP:FZW? cheers, —Pill (talk) 16:34, 10 July 2012 (UTC) (also, would be nice if we could get away from the bossy language ...)[reply]

I'm very sorry but I think this discussion is pointless if you don't want to understand the reasons we provided. It's right, mass-reverts are controversial (and thats why I don't do mass-reverts). But Addihockey10's edits are controversial for the same reason! He did mass edits without any knowledge of the article subjects, without anybody asking for the replacements, even without checking the results. Nobody said community consensus is needed to replace a single PNG file with a SVG. But you need community consensus to replace hundreds of files.
@Matthiasb: I find this very funny. These are two completely different emblems (look at the colors). One must be wrong. (In case you wonder, I fixed it now.) --TMg 18:23, 11 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wow. Everything we said is already noted here: commons:Commons:Transition to SVG#Notes. --TMg 18:32, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Global CSS/JS migration[edit]

Hello Addihockey10. You have a global.js page which contains your global scripts for all wikis. Since August 19th, your global.js and global.css pages are now automatically loaded on all wikis (see announcement). Since you were already loading them before this feature, you may experience script errors or issues like tools being added twice. I can fix that for you by merging your local scripts and styles into your global pages, and deleting the local pages with synchbot. Do you want me to do that? —Pathoschild 19:39, 14 September 2014 (UTC)

Hi again! Feel free to add a Synchbot request or leave a message if you want me to do this; for now I'll strike you off the list. :) —Pathoschild 21:05, 21 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
