History and facts from the masses ?

Do I understand this correctly ? Wikapedia is an Encyclopedia that can be edited by anyone who wants to? What if what i type is incorrect ? Are there editors to check for fact and content ?

Yep. Wikipedia relies on the good will and hard work of our thousands of volunteer editors. Although we always have some visitors who insert faulty information we find that the balance is positive and that more people fix problems than introduce them. Alexa link on foundation main page needs fixed

Wikitoolbar in browser

Hi there,

It would be great, if we have a tool bar to type the context we want to search (Similar to Google toolbar) in the browser.

This would increase the accessibility of our Wiki :) We want wiki to be more handy and to visit more and more times..

For Wikipedia, I have been using Wikipedia approximately a year, and I used to save lots of pages on my HDD or even download them from Internet Cafes and view them offline, the big problem is that after the project of Wikipedia donation started all the pages I save them don'y use to save correctly and then each time I open them they are really annoying(I use to save the pages in MHT by Internet Explorer), and then require to connect to the Internet or even do not use to save ! So I have a small request to use script or something like that to make the donations progress bar not be saved with the web page when saving web pages using IE, I don't think that this is a hard work for all the pros working in Wikipedia.Hope you can fix this.Best wishes for all Wikipedia.

Donation in INR

Hi I was looking to donate, and found that in the dropdown menu, you don't have an INR. I'm an Indian, and without INR in the menu, I don't think I can donate. Please try to include this option also.

Press room

Just wondering, was there a reason why this edit removed Australian and Swedish press contacts? I don't have an account on that wiki, so I can't ask the user Wiki blue why s/he did it, but it was without edit comments. If there weren't any good reasons, would it be possible for someone to revert it please, as the Australian contacts were decided at a meeting of the relevant parties (as indicated by this edit by Angela). Sugestion for WikiLyrics

What about create a site for Lyrics like Wikipedia Lyrics or WikiLyrics.

We could find there all bands and singer's lyrics!

Hello, I believe there already is a WikiLyrics and hundreds of other sites that contain Lyrics for your favorite songs. Wikimedia will never create a site like this because generally lyric-sites break the law due to their publishing of copyrighted lyrics. While researching the 9-11 attacks I clicked on a link to the section in Wikipedia that dealt with the Taliban and this is what came up after clicking on the link.

Hello, Wikipedia is a wiki, meaning that anyone can edit it. A vandal came along and replaced the page Taliban with those upsetting words. However, because Wikipedia is a wiki, you can help us by reverting the damage that the vandals have done. My theory

I have some ideas on dimensional theory that can give poeple a start on how to build machines for travel that make sense. What they amount to is the idea that every point in space has a magnetic signature that is made from the spectral properties of atoms and the conflicts between these createsa spectral like meaning, and my theory is that you can run these things through an electromagnet and propell yourself toward them.

I haven't had the ability to many experiments but I can go deeper and what I don't want is to type all this up if i wont get reconition and there would be no interest.

"Imagine a world..." on front page

This used to say "Imagine a world in which every single person is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. That's what we're doing." but was changed to say "Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. That's our commitment." [1]. This is rather stilted wording; it loses the literary ring that the previous quote had: "All knowledge" needs an adjective, and the most appropriate one is "human knowledge", which is a common phrasing with which people have strongly good associations ("all knowledge" is not even theoretically possible). It should be changed to: "Imagine a world in which every single person can freely share in the sum of all human knowledge. That's our commitment." —Centrx→talk • 18:10, 25 March 2007 (UTC)

Set up Foundation CommonsTicker?

Hello, perhaps the Foundation website should set up a CommonsTicker? This is a page maintained by a bot that tells you which images from Commons, that your project uses, have been replaced/nominated for deletion/deleted. You can see an example at ja:Wikipedia:CommonsTicker.

Since Foundation is a closed wiki, either the bot account could be given there, or else the Ticker page could be hosted on meta. What do you think? --pfctdayelise 05:12, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for your attention, it might be considered (personally I love your proposal, but it's not my personal possesion anyway). In a current moment, I have some questions
  • You implies it isn't necessary to set a bot there but generate a list somewhere else?
  • Who will care the bot account, specially if it runs on that? (Just for your information Dusentrieb has no account there).
Personally I'll be more than happy to see images automatically replaced/added information, but not hesitant to let relevant logs accumlated there. Some object even its editors use their talk pages and that is partly why its admin board is placed on meta, not there. So a theoretial question; is it possible to have a bot running there but have logs not there but somewhere else? --Aphaia 08:27, 11 February 2007 (UTC)
I think it might be possible to just generate the list on Meta, so you wouldn't need to set up any new Foundation accounts or anything. I asked Duesentrieb; we will see what he says.
CommonsTicker only reports information about activity on Commons (on a CommonsTicker log page, and optionally also on Talk pages of relevant pages where an image is used). It never removes or changes images in pages.
There is a bot run by User:Orgullomoore, called CommonsDelinker, which can remove deleted images. For it to work, it would need an account on the Foundation wiki.
But I personally recommend that a CommonsTicker and someone paying attention to it would be enough - I don't think the Foundation wiki uses a lot of images anyway, and I imagine they are all "good" ones anyway.

Some quick answers:

  • I generally don't have an account on each wiki where CommonsTicker is active (there is an account for the "bot" of course). Instead, on each wiki the ticker is active, there's one admin volunteering to have an eye on the page and act as my contact to the community there (also important language-wise).
  • CommonsTicker per default posts to one page only, so it's not a "bot" in the common sense (as mentioned, it can also drop warning on talk pages). Also, since it's used for notification, it should not have a bot flag (which is mainly used to ignore bot edits).
  • CommonsTicker can currently not inspect one wiki and post the results to another. This is no fundamental problem, just a lot of nitty gritty stuff to change. No idea when it will happen - maybe next week, maybe next year...
  • The current version of CommonsTicker has an "auto cleanup" mode, where old issues drop off the page. That mode is however heavy on the database and deprecated for the next version (dubbed CommonsTicker NG and being currently tested on dewp). I suppose a different approch to automatic cleanup could be implemented. But it's more work than i currently really have time for, other issues are more important (like getting CommonsTicker to cooperate with Orgullo's CommonsDelinker, for projects that have both).

Merchandise Links

COuld clear links to your merchandise pages be set up?

I am guessing that the merchandise would bring in some funds fr you. I know a lot of people who would buy various wiki gear if they knew it was available.

Maybe under the Donation link you could have a "WikiShop" logo.

Wikipedia, the internet

It seems to me that the most urgently required contributions you need are pictures of your subjects to illustrate many of your listings. I can see no reason why any of the listees would object; your position in search engine results would seem that you have established yourself as the premier instant catch all research tool, and in the case of many artistes, entertainers, celebrities et al, surely the more approved information that exists on them, the better. The internet is surely a research tool, primarily, and a buying medium, second. However, the amount of detailed information I find I am able to access seems limited. Perhaps I'm not going about it in the right way. Surely this medium should be nerd heaven; if I want to know who ran the 400 metres for West Germany on the 1984 Olympic Games, there should be a site which will tell me quickly; if I wish to view the cover of any given magazine, then I should be able to find it, and if necessary, dowload it as a jpeg. It's not like I'm going to make money by peddling it to anyone else, and the more people see it, the higher the given publication's profile, surely. Magazines represent an interesting issue (ouch): the can only be a finite number of back issues if any publication, so for those readers of say, GQ, who wish to peruse out of print issues, perhaps each publisher could create a site with all the published articles available as text, illustrated by jpegs of the visual content. If they wanted, I suppose it could be subscription only.

BAd spanish translation

Hello,

As a spanish speaker i wanted to let you know that i noticed in your home page you have the spanish heading as "Español La enciclopedia libre" which i am guessing you tried to say FREE Enclyclopedia!! however thats not the correct translation. Free as it has no cost in spanish is GRATIS. I would appreciate if you could fix it.

How is it that that in E=mc2, units for energy, mass and the speed of light assigned by man happen to be mathematically correct to a physical law?

1.) Suggest adding ability to donate via Amazon.com 2.) The fundraising page has broken images. 3.) This page (and the entry form page at http://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikimedia_site_feedback/main&action=edit&section=new) also has broken images, and I suspect the problem may be more widespread in the wikimedia.com and wikifoundation.org sites. Example, see page bottom, image to display SRC is http://meta.wikimedia.org/images/wikimedia-button.png does not appear to exist, or at least, is not loading on the page for me.

Addition to Prom

"The Unwanted Stress" Not a lot of people talk about how much stress prom can put on teens or their parents. There is so many things to be done and to schedule. The expences are quite extreme too. The stress of getting everything done sometimes might take away from the fun it's suppossed to be. When needed dress/tux, shoes, jewelry, flowers, tickets, limo, restuarant, and many other here and there things. This amounts to lots of stess for teens to find the right stuff and at a godd price. It causes stress on parents to buy it and take their teens out to get things. As you can see there is a lot of stress around prom.

North Bay Ontario artical

You have missed some information in the artical about North Bay Ontario under "Prominant People" NHL players, as well as brothers, Kevin and Derian Hatcher lived in North Bay. I was in Derian's English class at Chippewa Secondary School in 1990-1991. I could send you his photo from the schools year book if need be.

About the yearbook image you have, unfortunately most of the images found in yearbooks are copyrighted and cannot be used on Wikipedia. In addition, because those images are from when they were children, their use may be a violation of the subjects' privacy.

A new idea

I belive it would an interesting idea to create a website using your "wiki" technology and the idea that most people feel that they are important. A website that would be a wiki autobiography for those who wish to tell their story without the nuiscance (excuse my spelling if incorrect) of talking to others. i.e. "myspace"

PDA Format

I use a pda to access the internet. This box I am usig is only 3 character s wide and is typical of the site display on a mobile device. Other sites detect a pd and the frames disolay much better

I really liked seeing the bar that said how much money was there, just so we could get an idea of how much money was being donated. I would really like to see that back. I understand if there are reasons as to why not, but I thank you for listening.

Wikimedia name in other languages

Since Wikimedia is the official name of the foundation, I think it's not correct to translate or transliterate it into other languages (namely those using non-Latin alphabet, eg Russian). What are the pages on this site and wikimediafoundation.org? Are they all just help pages, info pages, and business records of the Foundation, or are there other things. Also, if one creates an account on either site, what is that user's prupose? Where you are now is Meta-Wiki. Meta-Wiki exists for collaboration, organization, and management amongst the Wikimedia Foundation's many projects. On this wiki, there are pages that are of use to many different wikis as opposed to only a few or one. It is also were stewards operate from. Wikimediafoundation.org is, as its name suggests, the Wikimedia Foundation's website. The Wikimedia Foundation is the organization that owns and operates the sites like Wikipedia. If you create an account here, you become a user like on Wikipedia and you edit the miscellany that exists here. (See Special:Allpages to get an idea.) You cannot create an account directly on the Wikimedia Foundation site. The allocation of accounts there is tightly managed by the people at Request for an account on the Foundation wiki, and most users don't get them. However, there is no real need to edit that wiki locally anyway. What do you mean by source code? If you mean the software, then yes, we use the same software as on Wikipedia (MediaWiki). You could do numerous things, this is like going to Wikipedia and saying "what can I do?" :) There are many, many thing that you can do.
  • If you are good at translating or speak many languages, visit the Translations committee at T
  • If you want to discuss itesm, visit Metapub, Meta:Babel, or Meta:Babylon
  • You could also patrol the site for vandalism at Special:Recentchanges
  • Just read some of the information that's on this site, there's literally tons of it!

I have found a few picures of Tim Starling. On Commons: Tim and Angela working on their laptops, Group shot of Tim, Jimbo Wales, and Domas Mituzas with Tim on the left, blurry shot of Tim, though to use it, we must have permission the permission of Dungodung and Tim, and Tim and Cimon Avaro arm wrestling; from Google Images: probably the best picture of Tim, copyright unknown, and I think that the website is primarily German, though I'm not sure.
On Commons there was just one picture of Sandra Ordonez that I could find which was a picture of her from Wikimania 2007. For Mark Bergsma, I found an image from Wikimania 2006.

Blue Highlights

I have just entered your site for the first time, looking up 'Bastille Day'. Although I enjoyed the explanation, I found that the blue highlighted random words annoyed the heck out of me. I didn't care for the visual distraction that these blue words presented. I felt as though I was in some 7th grade history class being taught the key words for the test!! That is B.S.! I prefer to garner such information for myself. So...I looked for some icon or line with which I could remove the offending colored words but I could not find anything to alter the text printing. Is there such a icon or line?? If not, would you guys install one? I just don't want to enter your site if not. Thanks DH.

Capitalization request

regarding this request on the english wikipedia admin noticeboard, I am not sure I agree that capitalizing Internet is a good idea. I see Cbrown1023, in apparent response, actually lowercased it in one place, which is a change I think is good. (tnis is mostly for the record :) ) Lar 11:04, 8 August 2007 (UTC)

I disagree. "The Internet" is a proper noun and thus should be capitalised at all times. Not so to do is generally considered an example of poor grammar - for our corporate site we really should be aware of such issues and act as most organisations would. I'll fix this in a day or so (assuming I don't forget ;-)) unless someone can give some good reasons...

I, of course, agree with you James, that we should show good grammar on our corporate site whenever possible! But the question is "Is the internet in "Jimmy is an internet entrepreneur" supposed to capitalsed?" I would say no, personally, but does anyone feel differently? See w:Talk:Internet ... this apparently is a question of some considerable controversy and has been for some time. The current usage in that particular article is to have it capitalised, with the argument advanced on talk being that it refers to "the Internet" (singular, and thus a proper noun). I'm not sure that argument applies when we talk about "internet enterpreneur"... do we say "Finance enterpreneur"? There is, after all, only one global financial market, if one uses the same argument used to assert that there is only one global internet.
Not to put too fine a point on it though, since we could spend months arguing about this matter if we wanted to. I think the argument for capitalisation is wrong but would just want us to be consistent rather than spend a great deal of intellectual capital (heh) on whether to use capital letters or not. I think Wikipedia

I think Wikipedia is the greatest thing I've ever encountered on the Internet. I am constantly impressed at the quality of the writing on the entries, and though I know there may be issues sometimes, I love it. It is something I really enjoy supporting. The other that is somehow in the same category for me is the Central Park Conservancy here in NYC. Both have alot in common - the result of their work is incontrovertibly high value, accessible, and supported by volunteers.

Please contribute to the Wiki Foundation ! I used to be a net-Luddite, but Wikipedia has changed that.

A few typos, etc.

Hi! Out of boredom, lately I've been looking at the old resolutions (they really give an insight to the history of the Foundation!). I found a few typos though.

Also, some resolutions start with "Resolution " in the title and some start with "Resolution:". At Resolution:Communications committee/Members "Resolution " was changed to "Resolution:".

Your information on stories of Italian subjects are often bigoted and to me prejudiced. William Paca is one of two italian American signers of the Declaration ofIndependance, so get over it. We Italian Americans have seen history rewritten by bigots our whole lives. It is a shame that in this day and age some people are still so shallow and unfair. Do some research before you write information that people will believe is totally true. Even your history of Italy is revolting and insultive to me. However I am sure this will never be printed. Most users are not instructed to contact our legal representative directly. The legal OTRS queue is used internally (content is moved there from other queues) where it is answered by legal interns/volunteers, then if it needs the eyes of our legal representative, we forward it to him directly. Mike is very busy and we try not to involve him with problems that can be done much easier by interns. However, his contat information is easily found if one just does a search for him on the Foundation, Meta, or English Wikipedia wikis. Sorry for your trouble, but it is not a hijack. Rather whenever our server may have been in trouble, then you are led to the notice page which inform you our situation. Since requests for Wikipedia is steadily increasing, our capacity is sometimes not enough reply every query. It can be improved only changing our technical settings so that we need to buy more servers and continue to hire technicians. The message you may have gotten told you just the above, I expect. Hi, I was noticed recently "pop-up" complaints and wonder if it was what you experienced too. Before that, I thought you misunderstood our error message. But if you got, "donate us" type pop-up windows or whatever, it didn't come from the Foundation.
Please be aware that the Wikimedia Foundation does not require anyone to donate in order to use Wikipedia or any of the Wikimedia projects.

Timeline

Would it be possible to create an interactive, all-encompassing timeline of the history of the universe? It would have to be filtered of course, giving you the option to choose individuals, events, conflicts, scientific descoveries, and the list goes on... I've never heard of doing this, but I don't know why it wouldn't work.

Defaced Articles Permeate Wikipedia!

On an average of 4 out of 6 wikipedia articles, readers encounter large notes indicating: "Article MAY contain original work" "Cites and footnotes needed" "Article needs polishing to "meet wikipedia standards”" etc. The notes are defacement, often arbitrary, and unsubstantiated, while remaining unresolved for months and years.

I once wrote an article which was immediately defaced so. The note was erroneous and posted by a wikiwriter who personally disagreed with the articles’ widely substantiated facts (as shown by established cites). Further, the articles' quality was more polished, detailed, and informed than his on the same subject. He had also become territorial on the subject for having been the first and only poster until I came along. He immediately used the note feature to deface and repress the article. Too many wikipedia articles are likewise noted under such dubiousness.

Wikipedia needs higher standards, and checks and balances, against article defacing through arbitrary notes. In most cases it's tantamount to defamation without substantiation by propagandists, personal opinion, or writers’ envy. The profuse number of pages containing such and the ease by which wikipedia allows arbitrary noting, serves propagandists well.

Due to the preceding, I do not write at wikipedia and rarely visit now. When I do visit, it is for quick reference lightly taken or to see if a .jpg is available on the subject, while on my way to established works. I avoid citing or referring wikipedia at all costs since it is widely understood to be a tool of propagandists.

Raise the standard.

Please provide a transcript of "Jimmy's video"

I noticed the video link at http://wikimediafoundation.org/donate/2007/psa/ which has streams in Theora, H.264, and MPEG-1, but it's missing the most important type of stream: TEXT!

Please post a text transcript of what he's saying so that those of us who can't hear it can at least read about it! I think just posting a link to "read the text of this speech" on that same page wouldn't be too much to ask for deaf users.

Not giving this year

Dear Wikimedia,

I donated $25 dollars to Wikimedia last year for your efforts in maintaining the wonderful service that is Wikipedia. I have decided not to give this year and voice this protest against deletionists. I encourage the Wikimedia foundation and the scores of dedicated wikipedians that work so hard on Wikipedia to reevaluate the current deletion policies, specifically those related to notability.

I look forward to donating in future years. I hope by then, the deletion policies will be revised to widen the scope of acceptable articles.

Does Wiki have enough influence to persuade the worlds major medical journals and text books to provide free up to date literature on say a wikihealth or wikimedicine site which would be especially helpful for the developing world?

I'm with John. Wikipedia is being killed by arrogant admins who want to shape the site to their vision by any means, and who would rather delete an article than try to fix it. I have just watched my most recent pet page be deleted due to that horrid "notability policy". Lots of people debated the deletion, lots of people gave evidence why it should not be deleted, but in the end the work of many people was erased.

Maybe next year I'll donate. This year I'm too disgusted by the power-mad admins who erased my words because they could.

I tried to donate to the webpage using a credit card. The site kept kicking me over to Paypal. Eventually I gave up. I am not sure whether I managed to make the donation or not.

defaced articles on wikipedia

I have been reading many reports of wrong information on wikipedia articles,
caused by people who update the articles with wrong information or by articles being defaced.
I would like to suggest that an email could be automatically sent to the registered authors of changed articles,
so that they could check if the modification is consistent and it is still a good article.
With this measure we could make all registered authors the keepers of information.
If anyone modify the article, they receive an email asking them to take a look in the modification.
Maybe it could help to decrease the number of wrong articles and the time its remain wrong.

Wikistats

Wikimedia should start a branch for statistics. Just like they have a dictionary, encyclopedi, they should also make a site for statistics on many subjects. People would be able to edit stats. This would create a database of statistics ranging from sports to demographics to health studies. Please consider this idea.

HTML coding issue regarding the appearance of wikimedia.org main portal

There is no background color defined for http://wikimedia.org/, which makes it look terrible for anyone whose browser settings default to a non-white page color. (not to mention it always looks a little amateurish when a website neglects these cases - don't worry, you're by far not the only one...)

WikiLanguage possibilities?

I noticed that there are seperate sections in the wikibooks site for languages. I was wondering, as an extension of WikiDictionary and WikiBooks, could there be a wiki translation site? I don't mean as in Babelfish, but a literal dictionary with a standardized index of words. Ah, I see, the "Submit a new comment" link takes you to a sub-page (Wikimedia site feedback/main) which is still editable, so creating a new section works. But when I come back to Wikimedia site feedback I'm left without section edit buttons, because that page is locked. Only when I reload the Wikimedia site feedback/main link indirectly I can edit. Perhaps the database was locked for routine maintenance (it happens on occasion, and usually lasts about three to four minutes). Exactly, none of the headings at Wikimedia site feedback have edit links. I doubt it's a temporary problem. I still have to go to my browser history and load the Wikimedia site feedback/main page to get the section buttons (from there all works dandy as you can see)
There's just the "View source" button at the top of the parent page telling that "This page has been locked to prevent editing." - Guess that having one locked main page and one editable sub-page doesn't mix well when it comes to editing sections.
I didn't even know there's a sub-page until I started rooting around for the reason why creating a section did work but editing a section did not. Safe to assume the average visitor just gives up. Besides, why should visitors not be able to edit a page called "feedback" in the first place? 84.129.172.45 22:07, 17 November 2007 (UTC)

As for the section edits, I see two options: (clearly #1 makes the most sense)

1) Unlock the parent page, so that the edit buttons carry over from the sub-page again and are not suppressed by the page lock. (I know these kind of sub-paged sections work fine elsewhere on Wikipedia.) or

2) Reduce the parent page to a mere pointer to the actual forum page on which users are supposed to edit. It makes no sense to have the feedback page display its sub-page but give no reasonable means to reach these sections for editing. (A simple notice saying "don't come here, this page's locked, go to another page" would also do, but that's kinda defeats the purpose of leading visitors to the first page.) 84.129.179.210 12:02, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

Yes, it is okay that there is a note about donations towards Wikimedia Polska on the Fundraising page. They are a local chapter of the Wikimedia Foundation and you are free to donate to them. I am not sure where exactly the money you donate to them goes, however I am sure you can find more information on their site. Wikimedicine

I am not sure if this is the right venue for this suggestion, but I think that a valuable resource that the Wikimedia Foundation should consider exploring is a medical reference tool. This could include comprehensive pages on pharmacology, diseases, syndromes, etc., all phrased and formated in language intended for physicians and other health professionals. Though a site like this would obviously not be intended as a replacement for medical textbooks, but if accuracy is maintained by administrators, "Wikimedicine" could prove to be a valuable reference tool. Three Further Projects Wikimedia may like to look into

Hi, I propose three further projects that Wikimedia Foundation may like to look into and develop.

One is Wikiware, maybe a connection between all software writers who are interested in making software for free under the GNU license. I understand that there are sites doing it but a Wiki might make this much more productive. Or perhaps a collaboration with one of these sites which are making non-commmercialized, free softwares.

The other two are projects involving sound and video files. One would be Wikiaudiobooks, which make audiobooks of Wikibooks and Wikipedia (perhaps 1.0 ?). The beneficiary of this is the blind, the eye-impaired (like older people who can't access the web) etc.

The second is WikiASL and WikiBSL, Wikibooks or Wikipedia in the American sign language or British sign language. It may be said that since the hearing or speech impaired can read, this project is unnecessary, but it may be more profitable for them to watch a video and pick it up rather than otherwise. Or maybe a software can be produced which can produced a graphics of sign language?

Projects in new languages are launched after a request at Requests for new languages. Regarding an American Sign Language Wikipedia, please see the first closed proposal at Requests for new languages/Wikipedia American Sign Language and the current one (still in discussion) at Requests for new languages/Wikipedia American Sign Language 2.

Donation gift certificate

Hey, the donation gift certificate idea rocks, but needs a grammar fix: has made must be changed to accommodate a plural giver (like "my wife and I").

the 2 second fix: change has to just, or change the merge sentence to read something like "This is to certify that _____________ made a contribution ... in your honor ...."

My mother's going to think that even my English lit degree was a waste of her money!
