Gujarati Wikipedia--Editathon on Gujarati Literature[edit]

Approved

Event details[edit]

Description[edit]

  • What are the Proposed activities? As discussed on the village pump of Gujarati Wikipedia, we are organising this editathon to create content in the various fields of Gujarati literature which includes but not limited to evolutionary phases of Gujarati language, different eras and works of Gujarati literature, various dialects of the language, important people and organisations who contributed significantly for Gujarati. We are encouraging editors to make pages of subjects, which are not yet created on any Wikipedia projects, by giving more points, apart from translations and update of existing pages.
  • What are the Expected impact? First, major impact would be more content related to this field on the Wikipedia. In previously organised editathon on Gujarati Culture and Civilisation, the editors created 160-odd pages in a fortnight, therefore, we are expecting the similar response in this editathon too. Second, as I have aforementioned it, some pages would be freshly created in Gujarati Wikipedia which can be translated in multiple languages with advanced tools. Third, it will encourage editors to contribute more and may attract newbies to join.
  • What is the Estimate budget (give it with a detailed break-up)? Not more than 12,500.
  1. 1st prize (3000 INR) worth Gift voucher
  2. 2nd prize (2500 INR) worth Gift voucher
  3. 3rd prize (2000 INR) worth Gift voucher
  4. 4th prize (1500 INR) worth Gift voucher
  5. 5th prize (1000 INR) worth Gift voucher

Not more than four condolence prizes (500 INR worth Gift vouchers) to other participants who have made more articles than the threshold number along with the jury. Apart from that, we expect the t-shirts or some momentos with the logo of Gujarati Wikipedia. --Brihaspati (talk) 04:51, 6 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion[edit]

Hello Brihaspati, thanks for letting us know about this in details. We'll go through this, and the village pump discussion, and will get back to you. Regards. --Tito (CIS-A2K) (talk) 12:31, 13 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Tito (CIS-A2K): The editathon is going to start from tomorrow. --Gazal world (talk) 13:57, 16 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • User:Gazal world and User:Brihaspati, we are discussing this and it may take a little time to conclude. Would you please tell what is expected ratio of the number of participants / number of number of prize winners? If the jury or the community has a take on it, let us know. You may also give the ration participants/prizes (includes consolation prizes) of the last edit-a-thon. Thanks for planning this event. We hope to get to a conclusion soon on this. Regards. --Tito (CIS-A2K) (talk) 01:45, 17 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Tito (CIS-A2K): Greetings on behalf of Gujarati community. We would like to know about the current status of approval. As you mentioned above about the number of Participants, We are expecting around 7 to 8 participant will take part in the editothon. You may also refer Previous editothon's report. We are waiting for your green signal to start the event. If any thing else require to fulfill the approval criteria, Please Specify.--Vijay Barot (talk) 15:24, 17 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hello Vijay Barot if there are 7–8 participants, we won't need upto 9 prizes (includes upto 4 consolation ). I am glad that the jury/community is working on the minimum threshold. Thanks for planning this initiative. This is Approved Approved , processing will be done once the event gets over. All the best. --Tito (CIS-A2K) (talk) 15:36, 17 January 2021 (UTC) 10:45, 18 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hi @Tito (CIS-A2K): Thank you for approving the editathon. I think Vijay has addressed the concerns specified. However, I would like to clarify a couple of points here: 1) Our community is small and the participation depends on multiple factors which are uncertain. Thus, sadly, we can't take a guarantee of the ratio. Additionally, we are not certain about condolence prizes, so, we have fixed a upper threshold limit on the number of prizes. Like, last time, just one condolence prize was needed whereas we talked about "upto 4 prizes" in request. 2) We want to work on the qualitative content, not only quantitative, which can be outwardly translated to other projects including English Wikipedia. Therefore, the community is planning to develop a score matrix which would give enouragement to the original articles instead of translations.
We are feasible for change; please keep us informed regarding suggestions on our activities from CIS, if any. We will surely pay heed to them. Thank you once again.--Brihaspati (talk) 17:47, 17 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Application to CIS A2K for a laptop[edit]

Approved

You all know that West Bengal Wikimedians User Group has been conducting wiki activities all over West Bengal since 2017 with dignity. During Covid19, the user group stopped offline activities. At the present time everything is going to be normal. Offline activities may begin later this year. Laptops are required for conducting offline activities or workshops, which are taken from different users. Many times not all users have a laptop. As a result, the problem can be seen conducting workshops. So, the user group needs at least one laptop. I am requesting CIS A2K to provide a laptop to the West Bengal Wikimedians User Group. Providing a laptop will make the work of the user group easier. -- খাঁ শুভেন্দু (Shuvendu) (talk) 17:40, 19 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Request for a scanner support[edit]

Approved

Event details[edit]

  • Language community and project : Odia Wikimedians User Group
  • Community discussion (Village Pump link): https://or.wikipedia.org/wiki/Topic:W32e7krh79glzb8o
  • Start date of preparation: March 15, 2021
  • Start date of project: April 1, 2021
  • End date of project: October 31, 2021
  • End date of completion of the entire endeavor: November 30, 2021
  • Event page: not applicable

Description[edit]

  • What are the Proposed activities?
  • The Odia Wikimedia projects have been benefited a lot from the digital archival work by Bhubaneswar-based organisation Srujanika for many years now -- from over 1 lac words being created on Odia Wiktionary from the Purnachandra Bhashakosha (digitised by Srujanika and hosted by the University of Chicago) to several books on Odia Wikisource to even finding reference materials for Odia Wikipedia articles thanks to their online archival https://odiabibhaba.in. They recently reached out to us to request to CIS-A2K for a scanner that can use for sometime for their digitisation work. Though they had their own scanners, they faced technical difficulties with outdated equipment which hampered their work. The User Group's conversation with them have been in the line of asking them to share the scanned Public Domain text so that the same can be beneficial for Odia Wikisource. In short, the proposed activities would be:
  • Srujanika will scan text in their collection and will share with the User Group all Public Domain (and other text that are licensed under open and public licenses and are compatible with accepted licenses on Wikimedia projects) works
  • The User Group could host the text on Wikimedia Commons to be later used by different Wikimedia projects
  • Majority of the scanned text will make their way to Odia Wikisource but some will also contribute to other projects (e.g. to Wikipedia as reference text)
  • When physical movement will be safer, User Group members and other Wikimedians can also visit the Srujanika premises in Bhubaneswar for scanning.
  • As processing the request here would a couple of weeks, we expect the actual work to start around the beginning of April. The work will continue for six months after which we will evaluate the progress to discuss with CIS-A2K further about continuation/discontinuation of the scanner support.
  • What are the Expected impact?
  • Many physical books in Srujanika's collection are not only rare (and out of print) but are quite brittle and are prone to being perished very soon. The only way to archive the text is to scan them immediately. Srujanika has a very exhaustive digital library management system and catalysing their work through this scanner will help preserve text that is yet to be documented digitally. Some of the works are already in Public Domain and some will be in due course. But it is important that they are archived digitally before they are completely unavailable in physical form. So, having many such works scanned is the primary priority.
  • Works under Public Domain and other Wikimedia-compatible licenses are going to be directly uploaded to Commons. As more works enter into Public Domain (in the US where the Wikimedia servers are hosted), they will also be uploaded on Commons, even they might be beyond the timeframe of this project.
  • We consider Srujanika as a natural ally to the Wikimedia movement and supporting their work will have a long-term impact on the open knowledge movement.
  • What is the Estimate budget (give it with a detailed break-up)?
  • not applicable

Request for a laptop for Gujarati Wikisource comminity[edit]

Approved

Description[edit]

We have received a grant for a scanner in 2018 for Gujarati Wiki community. We have scanned many books since for Gujarati Wikisource community and we have benefited immensely from it. At the time of requesting the grant, we did not know that the scanner is only compatible with a Windows OS laptop. I, Gazal world, was a custodian of the scanner and had a Chromebook which was not compatible. As I was hesitant to have another grant request for a laptop, I used a laptop of a friend when the scanner was in my custody. Since I have moved to another city and have no longer access to my friend’s laptop. Several members of the community could not lend the scanner because they did not have a laptop too. We realised that a scanner along with a laptop will result in better utilization of the scanner by the community. So on behalf of Gujarati Wikisource community, I am requesting a laptop which will be used along the scanner and will be lent to the community along with the scanner. The Gujarati Wikisource community have endorsed my proposal here on village pump. The laptop will also help us for presentations and other purposes in offline meetups and workshops. The laptop will also host scanned offline resources and tools for the use of the community as well. I am a volunteer at Resource Exchange noiceboard on English Wikipedia (My contribution), and I also run similar Resource Exchange page on Gujarati Wikipedia (My contribution). So this laptop will also help me to serve on both Resource Exchange program. --Gazal world (talk) 08:19, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

P.S: We need a laptop with good storage (1 Tb) and RAM. --Gazal world (talk) 11:41, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

  • Support Support Active and enthusiast Wikimedian. Scanner grant was very successful and a laptop will result in better utilisation of the resources. -Nizil Shah (talk) 09:29, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Support, enthusiastically. One of my pleasures has been to work with the editor, in the rather simple area of minor corrections of his numerous articles on Gujarati and Indian culture, all of which show hard work, and are a learning experience for an outsider like myself. He has proven over the years, even before I stepped in to help in this area, extremely generous in locating obscure sources that I couldn't access. A first-class wikipedian, who repays in multiple ways whatever assistance other editors provide him from time to time.Nishidani (talk) 11:01, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Support A very dedicated and helpful Wikimedian who amplifies the potential of other Wikimedians through his librarianship and research assistance. Shyamal (talk) 13:35, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Support I endorse this excellently-presented application for well-deserved funds without equivocation; this is precisely the way the Foundation should be spending its money. ——SerialNumber54129
  • Support Support -- KartikMistry (talk) 16:16, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong support Strong support User:Gazal world is doing a very important and time-taking task of scanning books on behalf of the Gujarati Wikisource community. He also helps other editors to edit new articles by scanning reference literature through the resource exchange project. With his extraordinary efforts, we have managed to reach 50% of the scanned pages (books) available on Wikisource in a very short span of time. I endorse his application for laptop. A compatible laptop will synergies the scanning and will give a new boost to the Gujarati Wikisource team and the Resource Exchange Project of Gujarati Wikipedia.--Vijay Barot (talk) 16:30, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Support The previous request for a scanner has clearly helped Gazal world continue to make valuable contributions, and I have little doubt that the use of a compatible laptop would be just as beneficial. Gazal world has been a long-time volunteer at the English Resource Exchange—repeatedly dipping into his own pocket to help out with international ILL requests—and as the above comments make clear, this represents only a fraction of his global contributions. He has both produced good (and underrepresented) content and helped others do the same, suggesting that the requested help would be doubly valuable to the overall project. --Usernameunique (talk) 19:06, 30 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Support T8612 (talk) 01:32, 31 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Support He has been consistently doing great work. This support will help the larger community, rather than just an individual. KCVelaga (talk) 07:19, 31 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Support The user is helping wikipedians a lot with his work regarding resource-exchange. I fully endorse his request. Sajaypal007 (talk) 16:24, 31 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Support -- Gazal world has been of invaluable help on the English Resource Exchange page, fulfilling numerous editor's resource requests by scanning books. I have no doubt that such a laptop will benefit the Wikimedia Foundation's projects. —Bruce1eetalk 21:38, 31 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong support Strong support Gazal world has been doing outstanding work with the scanner which the Gujarati (Wikisource)Community has received. The user has scanned number of books which have been digitized and kept on Wikisource. He has been running Resource Exchange Program and has helped in providing resource material for a lot of articles. He has created number of articles on Gujarati authors and Gujarati literature on English and Gujarati Wikipedia. If the laptop will be made available, the he would be able to make more and more books available and looking as his past works wiki communities are expected to be benefited more and future. --Sushant savla (talk) 05:21, 2 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Support This request definitely needs to be funded and the community endorsement is verifies this argument. --Satdeep Gill (talk) 12:36, 4 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Equipment support for IMD User group[edit]

Approved YesY

I would like to make an equipment support request here on behalf of IMD user group.

  • Which equipment:- MacBook Pro M1 with 16GB (13-inch, a lowest variant of Pro)
  • Equipment price:- $1970 (base) + $280 (additional RAM) = $2,250
  • Duration:- At least for 2.5 years (but can be extend further)
  • Announcement link:- Talk:Indic_MediaWiki_Developers_User_Group#Equipment_for_User_group
  • Rational for equipment: See announcement link
  • Rational for equipment's expensiveness:- Since the laptop will be used to develop the tools and software so it is necessary to have a laptop with at least 16 GB RAM and Octa core processor. We found 4 laptops on Amazon and Flipkart. They all have $2000 price category but we selected M1 as it has two main benefits: It is highly optimized for developers and allow cross platform application development. Also we don't require to buy Windows product key. The 13 inch variant is the lowest in Pro series and fulfilling the requirements of the developer configration. It is perfect option for us now. Laptop has good configuration. Hence, it is little bit expensive.--Jayprakash >>> Talk 18:13, 28 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Jayprakash and the members of Indic MediaWiki Developers user group, thanks for letting us know about this request. The budget of the laptop you have mentioned is much higher than the laptops supported by CIS, or during Project Tiger. However we understand that you need this laptop is needed for developing-related work, which might be difficult or impossible in general laptops. Thanks for giving the clarification. We have the following the questions/observations:

  1. Please note if we support this it will be an asset of CIS, and it will be given to the user group for using.
  2. We would need a contact person/custodian from the user group, who we will contact.
  3. Your team is doing very good work to support Wikimedia projects, we would like to know about the interesting work you are doing. Could you share a brief report in every three months?
  4. If we support, initially we can give it for one year, if the usage report etc are done, we'll gladly extend it for a year.
  5. We agree with Krishna's suggestion of preparing an asset-management sub-page on Meta-Wiki, and we are asking the same.
Feel free to ask questions.
Regards. --Tito (CIS-A2K) (talk) 12:55, 4 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Tito (CIS-A2K) Ji for your response.
  1. We agree that it will be CIS asset.
  2. I (User:Jayprakash12345) will be custodian from user group side for equipment.
  3. We (user group) publish report in every 3 months. In the past, 80% technical work is done by me so we can attach our quarterly activity report and can provide usage stats in terms of percentage.
  4. We are okay with 1 year.
  5. We will create asset-management sub-page once equipment is hand over to us.--Jayprakash >>> Talk 13:17, 5 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hello User:Jayprakash12345, Indic MediaWiki developers user group and the team is doing quite amazing. Although the requested expense is much above our normal support, following the observations above, and specific project-specific requirement, the request is Approved Approved. K. N. Medini or someone from the team will contact you to take this further. Currently the asset will be handed over to the user group for a year, and after that the time period will be extended upon submission of reports.
