Healthy, inclusive communities - A

  • On the Arabic Community discussion some users agreed that theme A is an important one but they also think it should not be our priority, (§Ar2) while other think that a potential tool to help increase community's health could be to unify policies across wikis (§Ar3) and they also talked about user evaluation process. (§Ar9)
  • Australian Community participants said we can only create a trusted source of knowledge if we are a good community. (§as2) They also discussed problems dealing with new users, more appropriate help in starting editing. (§as1)
  • On the Albanian Wikipedia participants commented that investing in the growth of small communities is vital (§sq1) and Wikimedia movement should take on the burden of maintaining and developing small languages. (§sq13)
  • Members of Wikimedia Austria (Board and ED said this theme has the power to make or break our movement - without healthy and inclusive communities, none of the four other themes would be viable approaches and would heavily jeopardize our place within society. (§WMAT2) They also suggested learning from other potential partners. (§WMAT5)
  • On the Bengali community discussion participants commented if we follow this theme Wikimedia movement will spread across the continents such as Africa, Middle East, South Asia and Latin America where Wikimedia movement is less recognized.   • Wikimedians of Bulgaria UG commented that Wikipedia can be the leading role model of volunteering, shared knowledge and the power of togetherness (§WMBG26) though one participant suggested that this theme is fourth in priority. (§WMBG29) They also said that our movement needs to intensify the partnerships with likeminded cultural, scientific and educational organization. (§WMBG33)
  • On the Chinese Community - Individual interviews participants said that in order to follow this theme, we have to emphasise on Code of Conduct and Friendly Space Policy in the community, to provide a healthy environment to the volunteers/newcomers (§ZH1) and it is important as it provides the opportunity for the minority to share their knowledge. (§ZH4) They also commented on breaking the language barriers. (§ZH8)
  • Participants of Wikimedia District of Columbia said a toxic environment kills participation, making all the rest of the themes impossible to achieve (§WMC1) and having a healthy community is an important base for working with global communities and other partners. (§WMC3)
  • On the Dutch Wikipedia participants commented in terms of username that we should abandon using pseudonyms. (§nl9) They also discussed that the idea of inclusion by the WMF will be counterproductive. (§nl21)
  • On the English Wikipedia discussion, they said we could lead the way in collaborative, online digital humanities, (§EN1) With training and leadership, build self-sustaining teams to solve problems.(§EN3) , they also mentioned clique, cooperation (§EN4) and building tools to track changes and learn how various policies change the healthiness of our community. (§EN11) Participants stressed that if we follow theme A, we can create the utopia that the internet was originally intended to be.(§EN103), we will be able to cover many projects effectively and on time (§EN84) though one user commented that our community can stay healthy if we create multilingual wiki and stop separating projects based on language. (§EN85) One user commented, we should also research whether allowing unregistered users to edit helps or harms the community and then consider using the data to act accordingly to make this theme more stronger. (§EN69) Also there are some overall comment on this theme such as, incivility is difficult to define...it is better to stay well clear of gray areas (§EN65), demographic diversity for diversity's sake is pointless (§EN66) and de-prioritize pseudonymity in favor of real names associated with accounts.   • On the Italian Wikipedia some of the contributors think that theme A is important because it is the engine/heart of everything Wikipedia was and should be (§IT4) and by having a healthy community we could also be a good political example for others.(§IT3) Participants also think that we need to proactively search for new users with targeted campaigns, not at random (§IT62) and those who come to promote their unsourced ideas should be removed. (§IT43) We should also give attention to our readers (§IT50) though one participant thinks that this theme is not important. (§IT48) Participants said that We need reader's feedback.(§IT69) Regarding outreach programs we should also look for results in terms of quality.   • On the Meta wiki participants commented on theme A that it is the foundation of other themes, (§Meta1) suitable to Wikipedia, (§Meta2) WMF can support diversity financially, (§Meta5) , some users also suggested to collaborate with other organizations. (§Meta14) (§Meta15) We could learn, and then teach, so much more about how to structure factual, polite discourse online at a global scale if we follow this theme. (§Meta60) Participants commented that thematic WikiProject could attract more people to contributing, that's why they should be resurrected (§Meta68) and with sufficient editor participation and translators, we could know better what's happening on various wikis.(§Meta70) participants suggested to collaborate more with experts (§Meta74) and start socializing offline more.   • On the Polish Wikipedia theme A discussion focused on simplification of language, (§PL3) stronger technical support for devoted Wikipedians (§PL8) , examination of conscience (§PL9) though one participant fear that it is not clearly stated. (§PL4) One user suggested that we can change the community attitude toward newbies via real life meetings and trainings.(§PL15) Participants commented that we need a dedicated project to clarify the language we used to communicate oniki as it is big barrier for newbies, (§PL20) Linked Open Data is our potential ally in recognition of gender (and others) gaps in content (§PL22) and they also suggested an ombudsman for newbie editors. (§PL23) Though one user commented that this theme is important because level of newbie-biting is very high (§PL24) but another participant disagreed because healthy community is not our goal to achieve but rather one of the resources we can use for some strategic purpose.   • On the Turkish Wikipedia, participants said that healthy and organized communities should be the main theme (§tr4) and it would also effect the other themes. (§tr2)
  • On the Vietnamese Wikipedia participants think that theme A is important (§VI2) and by following this theme we can make the world come closer in the pursuit of free sharing knowledge. (§VI1)
  • On the Wikidata they commented if we follow theme A our data would be improved in terms of diversity and quality, (§DATA1) they also think it should be the primary goal. (§DATA4) One user said that we need to do the touchy-feely work to build healthy teams... and goals without a healthy community is empty rhetoric(§DATA34) and this theme is the second most important part of strategy.(§DATA49)
  • Wikimedia Israel members discussed that we must act to expand diversity, §WMIS1 as it may improve the ability to better deal with different opinions and ideas and increase our influence §WMIS2 §WMIS3 §WMIS4. The augmented age - B

  • Australian Community participants talked about effective communication, (§as5), Commons (§as8), automation (§as4) and audio-visual content, especially in more modern ways than are currently done. (§as1)
  • On the Albanian Wikipedia participants suggested that there should more integration between OpenStreetMap, Wikidata and Commons. (§sq6) In the augmented age we need to adapt, become more flexible and use technology for our benefit. (§sq3)
  • On the Bengali community discussion participants commented, To ensure the quality of our contents technological improvement is unavoidable. If we don't keep up with the world in terms of technology we will be left behind. (§BN6)
  • Wikimedians of Bulgaria UG said that this goal is of crucial importance, otherwise we risk lagging behind the others (§WMBG36) and we need cooperation with independent developers and IT companies, including big ones. (§WMBG10)
  • On the Chinese Community - Individual interviews participants said that technology helps the work be done in a more easy way (§ZH17) and WMF should spend more time and money for the AI development. (§ZH18) participants suggested to make strategy for next 5 years as it might be difficult for us to predict the development of technology in the next 15 years.(§ZH21)
  • Participants of Wikimedia District of Columbia said technology development is a core strength of other organizations (§WMC13) and WMF technology staff should be accountable to the other parts of the community. (§WMC14)
  • On the Dutch Wikipedia, participants discussed that this theme is important and we need a new interface with focus on simplicity. (§nl11) They also commented that there should be a way to integrate a Simple Wikipedia into the normal Wikipedia. (§nl3) They also talked about the failed projects and urged that we should stop focusing on them. (§nl13)
  • On the English Wikipedia discussion they stressed that with automation, we could drive out inadequately sourced content, provide better-sourced content, and be more reliable;(§EN13) they also fear that if we don't keep up with the state-of-the-art, then some other organization will likely leapfrog Wikipedia.(§EN17) Though some users said, we should be reliable and free to all rather than state of the art. (§EN19) This theme may also be the driving factor of other themes (§EN21), Partnership is also essential for this theme, because help from people proficient in AI would save a lot of our time. (§EN28) Users commented that given the speed of computational and AI innovation, a 15-year plan is impossible, (§EN71) we should give adequate support and PR attention to AI projects like ORES (§EN73) though others suggested that we should focus on developing smart tool to assist users instead of focusing AIs (§EN88) and suggested to improve site's design. (§EN74) They also suggested to approach more transparent (and smaller) companies or non-profits who would not seek to harm the project. (§EN90)
  • On the French Wikipedia discussion users said that if developed in accordance with transparency this theme can allow Wikimedia projects and wikimedians to evolve while remaining relevant; (§FR11) tools and models of improvement of our wikis can be reusable by other users of internet; (§FR12) this theme can be transversal to others; (§FR14) this theme also ensure that the "augmented" aspect does provoke an enormous consumption of electricity.   • On the Hindi community one on one discussions, participants thought that this theme is important because better tools are necessary to ensure that contributing to the movement is easy and also to ensure editor retention (§HI9) and it will be very useful if we work with organizations like Google, Bing and Microsoft.   • On the Hindi Wikipedia, participants suggested to collaborate with mobile manufacturers and service providers. (§hi18)
  • On the Italian Wikipedia participants discussed that technological improvements are necessary especially tool improvements for blind and visually impaired people and (§IT15) (§IT26) development of easy mobile interface (§IT17) (§IT18) (§IT19) and some kind of integration among OpenStreetMap, Wikidata and Commons.(§IT27) Users are not against innovation (§IT52) and the community appreciates innovations if it allows improvement of content. (§IT51) Projects like Wikisource could make use of some sort of "time capsule" to host in some hidden way content which is now copyrighted. (§IT64) We need to explain technological innovation also to users. (§IT89)
  • On Meta regarding theme B they commented that it should not be our primary goal, (§Meta16) this theme might impact meta. (§Meta19) Some users also voiced that we should improve quality first (§Meta21) while others suggested that if we want to stay relevant in the future world we should give importance to this theme. (§Meta22) Participants think that we should augment our front-end, cross-projects interaction, and knowledge with skills including communication tools (§Meta65) and should not reduce effort in human communication.(§Meta66) They suggested to collaborate with developers and academics in the field of automated translation, data handling for improving Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons and other mobile apps. (§Meta79)
  • On the Polish Wikipedia participants talked about shorter time strategies in terms of technology rather than 15 years (§PL18) and focusing on real issues such as anti-vandal tools. (§PL19) They said that more automation is needed (§PL31) otherwise we will become boring walls of texts in the era of the multimedia world. (§PL30)
  • On the Russian Wikipedia participants talked about 3D modelers, visual engineers, VR developers. (§RS7) They said that this theme is the top priority (§RS20) because we need to abandon old encyclopedic format (§RS8). We also need to turn attention to automatic creation of spoken articles (§RS22) and the progress in translation automatisation will allow us to turn Wikipedia into one global universal encyclopedia.   • On the Spanish Wikipedia if we follow theme B we could achieve quality automatic translations, apply Wikidata to education, (§ES4) and they think that it is the most relevant theme.   • On the Arabic Community discussion some suggested that Wikimedia Foundation should also fund and host specific study to explore the motives of Wikipedia contributors from emerging communities.(§Ar4)
  • Australian Community said if we're truly global, people will find it easier to stay in touch with and belonging to the community, even when they move to new cities or countries. (§as4) The WMF needs to broaden it's global footprint to counter the perception it is 'American' cultural imperialism. (§as7)
  • On the Bengali community discussion participants commented that we need to make sure that every human being with necessary device can access our contents, (§BN7) and we can reduce the knowledge discrimination by informing everyone about the importance and usability of Wikimedia projects. (§BN8)

  • Participants of Wikimedia Deutschland (staff) said this would be a theme with great impact, if the Wikimedia movement would understand itself and act like one, increasing collaboration and dialogue. (§WMDES43)
  • On the English Wikipedia discussion they also emphasized coverage, development of Wikipedia content, (§EN29) outreach (§EN33) , new approach (§EN34) and awareness (§EN31). One participant commented that we should look into revisiting the oral citations project(§EN83) and this theme is the most important themes of all because it is the best way to cover more articles from around the world.(§EN91)
  • On the French Wikipedia discussion participants discussed if we follow theme C, we will be much better implanted in the third world (§FR21) and we need to teach NGOs how to access, use our resources. (§FR22) We can also broaden the dissemination of knowledge to low awareness regions. (§FR32)
  • On the German Language Wikipedia participants focused on Wikimedia Commons and the Content Translation Tool. They suggested that Commons should provide a better support for photographers (§DE38) and an improved Content Translation Tool would improve the communication between the different languages of the world.(§DE39)

  • Participants of Wikimedia District of Columbia said, having quality content is perhaps the most obvious of the themes, but it is our core deliverable and all the other themes are in support of this (§WMC24) and a perception of legitimacy helps us to engage institutional partners. (§WMC30)
  • Participants of Wikimedia Deutschland (staff) said the focus should be on the high-quality content being useful for people, even despite being a respected or relevant source (§WMDES66) and the volunteer aspect in “working toward more accuracy and verifiability” is missing in this theme. (§WMDES65)
  • On the Dutch Wikipedia, participants suggested that more original research should be allowed.(§nl17) We should also focus on more traditionally encylopedic subjects and reduce the amount of current policies that we have. (§nl19)
  • On the English Wikipedia discussion Users think it should be priority.(§EN47) (§EN95) (§EN49) . They also discussed about GLAM partnership (§EN56) , reliability (§EN54) (§EN55) , verifiability (§EN56) and collaboration.(§EN62) (§EN63) Participants suggested that stricter controls are now urgently needed to maintain the quality and standards of our contents (§EN76) and we should also implement optional identity verification for users to ensure account's responsibility. (§EN78) Users who answered question 3 suggested to restrict editing of higher quality articles to higher certified users while allowing lower certified users to work on lower quality articles is a way to increase credibility. (§EN95)
  • On the French Wikipedia discussion participants said that this theme is complementary to others. (§FR27) We should emphasis on projects other than Wikipedia, (§FR24) put a strong emphasis on credibility of our information. (§FR25) They suggested that empowering Wikiversity can surely increase the visibility and seriousness of the movement as a whole. (§FR70)
  • On the German Language Wikipedia one Participant on theme D discussion said that Wikipedia cannot be a source, (§DE17) though another participant disagreed (§DE18). Another user thinks it is too ambitious but achievable (§DE19) . There are few other comments on overall thematic statements and they have some serious concerns about these themes.(§DE2) (§DE4) (§DE5) (§DE6) (§DE7) (§DE8) (§DE9) one participant thinks that this theme is the most important. (§DE39) They also commented that we will help people understand how our processes make us reliable“ the Wikimedia projects will stand a realistic chance to become the „most relevant source of knowledge“ beyond all scientific literature and respectable press by 2030. (§DE40)
  • On the Hindi Wikipedia, participants commented that if we follow this theme we will be able to ensure credibility, better consumer satisfaction, and Wikipedia will be used as a source of reliable citations. (§hi2) They also suggested to collaborate with scientists, authors and students.(§hi28)
  • On the Hebrew Wikipedia village pump participants suggested that Wikipedia must preserve knowledge and make sure knowledge is reliable (§HE6) and there is a need for a friendly and automatic mechanism for standardized citations of articles in scientific databases. (§HE10) They suggested that we need to add a control mechanism to each article that will bring the sources of information to the article (§HE19) and collaborate with Wikipedia scholar. (§HE20)
  • On the Italian Wikipedia participants discussed, we should be less inclusive (§IT35) and have to work to improve our reliability (§IT24). Users suggested that we need to cooperate with research and education institutions to verify content and we should cooperate with schools (§IT39) and universities to develop critical thinking in readers.(§IT41)
  • On the Polish Wikipedia, participants discussed on theme D pointed out that we should avoid knowledge imperialism (§PL12) and established as most trusted source of knowledge is nearly impossible. (§PL13) One user commented on theme D thinks that WMF should rather focus on technology and support of existing community rather than engaging too much effort to this theme (§PL16) though another user disagreed. (§PL17) participants discussed that this theme is the most important one. (§PL28) They also suggested to teach Wikipedians to find trusted sources. (§PL32)
  • On the Wikimedia Polska 2017 meeting participants commented that at the current state of contributors' communities of Wikimedia projects it is hard to engage experts due to egalitarian methods of decision making. (§PL11) Expert's role might play a role of external advisors or reviewers (§PL12) and they can be attracted by doing common projects with their mother institutions. (§PL13)
  • Members of Wikimedia Nederland said theme D provides the foundation for all the other themes (§WMNL2) and we will have to determine criteria for reliability and quality that are relevant for types of knowledge we do not cover at the moment. (§WMNL3)
  • On the Spanish Wikipedia, we could build trust among others if we follow theme D (§ES10) , participants also believe that it is an important topic. (§ES11) (§ES16) They suggested that we should promote our projects (§ES13) and chapters can help to put this theme into action. (§ES14) One user thinks that the best way to combat poor perceptions about our projects in other media is to admit that we have reliability issues and make it more reliable. (§ES35) Users also said that this theme is not necessarily an alternative to the others but goes hand in hand with some of them (§ES38) and if we follow this theme we would have a great impact, by becoming the world leaders in reliable information. (§ES39)
  • On the Swedish Wikipedia, participants said if we follow this theme Wikipedia and the other projects will be sources in other more complex clusters of information. (§sv13)
  • On the Vietnamese Wikipedia one user thinks this theme is the second most important, only after community health. (§VI6) The said that we can work with universities to make student assignments of checking sources and correcting information in Wikipedia articles. (§VI26)
  • On the Wikidata, by following theme D we can bring people from all language backgrounds together, (§DATA21) host high quality knowledge (§DATA22) and simplify our language. (§DATA25) One participant said that being a respected and reliable source of knowledge should be the most important theme. Without this one, the other four are of no use. (§DATA50)
  • During Wikimedia Hackathon participants commented that this theme the most important one because it directly impacts millions of readers every month (§wmhack10) and to make it stronger, we need need more research data on why people use other sources so that we can improve where possible. (§wmhack2)

Engaging in the knowledge ecosystem - E

  • On the Arabic Community discussion users stressed that theme E is the most important theme for the fact that it has the potential to combine the other four all together (§Ar6) One participant commented that we should try to enhance our efforts on reaching and engaging all individuals and underrepresented groups around the world in the knowledge ecosystem. (§Ar16)
  • Australian Community participants said we need more communication with our readers (§as4). They also talked about paid editing, (§as3) partners and understanding the contexts (§as7)
  • On the Albanian Wikipedia participants said that this will bring us even closer to the teachers, schools and research institutions. (§sq5)
  • Members of Wikimedia Austria (Board and ED said free Knowledge is the core of our engagement in the Wikimedia movement. Our idea can be maintained best in a growing and developing knowledge ecosystem. (§WMAT7)
  • On the Bengali community discussion participants commented if we can ensure quality and trustworthiness we could also be able to bring researchers and experts into our readers' ecosystem. That will eventually help us create a better ecosystem of knowledge. (§BN5)
  • Wikimedians of Bulgaria UG said that building relations with various organizations and institutions will popularize the good practices and interesting approaches of Wikipedia. (§WMBG56)
  • Participants of Wikimedia District of Columbia said that bringing in institutional partners can help create a healthy community by reinforcing our values (§WMC18) but they also fear having too much structure could dampen volunteer enthusiasm. (§WMC36)
  • Participants of Wikimedia Deutschland (staff) said working together with partners is the most effective way to create systemic change and have a large, long-lasting impact (§WMDES65) and this aspect has the highest potential to take Wikimedia’s impact in the world to the next level. (§WMDES75)
  • On the English Wikipedia discussion participants think that we should direct resources to developing nations, (§EN80) focus on micro non-profits (§EN81) and create partners out of our user base.(§EN82) They said that Wikipedia does not operate in a way academics understand. (§EN97)
  • On the French Wikipedia discussion participants think we should involve experts to improve the verifiability of content, (§FR34) stop confronting human against machines (§FR37) and if we want to include Wikimedia in the broader knowledge ecosystem we should provide reliable information and bring institutional actors to demonstrate legitimization. (§FR39) They said that engaging in the knowledge ecosystem need more outreach, a better understanding of academic, journalistic, etc., better recruitment (§FR47) and they also fear that Wikipedia can not substitute for a higher university education. (§FR46)
  • On the Hebrew Wikipedia village pump discussion suggested that it is important that we nurture people who can interact with the knowledge system (§HE22) and one user in favor of joining colleges, universities, high schools and even divisions to promote Wikipedia. (§HE23)
  • On the Hindi Wikipedia, participants discussed that this theme is really important and Wikipedia's survival might land in a crisis if we don't follow this theme. (§hi30)
  • On the Italian Wikipedia participants discussed that Wikipedia should continue not to accept original research (§IT23) though people often do but it's dangerous for us (§IT22) because we do not have editorial control which is capable of dealing with it.(§IT23) They also stressed on GLAM partnerships (§IT65) (§IT79) and said that as an encyclopedia Wikipedia is already a part of knowledge ecosystem so they said how we are a part of it, and that depends on the other themes. (§IT99)
  • On the Polish Wikipedia, on theme E they commented that Wikipedia should be neutral and cover less popular content even if it is not liked by experts (§PL7) and should continue NPOV (§PL14) .
  • On the Wikimedia Polska 2017 meeting participants commented that theme D goals must be achieved first then we might think about theme E (§PL17) however they recognize Wikimedia's content can be used as a good example how to recognize good knowledge from fake information by analysing the quality of sources. (§PL18)
  • On the Portuguese Wikipedia Village Pump participants commented that this theme is the one with the most potential to impact the world, with a change in education (§PT26) However they also fear that without a welcoming environment and clearer processes and documentation we will not create the contagion effect necessary for this theme to develop at the needed pace. (§PT26) They suggested instead of focusing on attracting students we should focus on attracting teachers. (§PT29)
  • On the Spanish Wikipedia discussion participants agreed that this theme will have a big impact (§ES18) and the issue has enormous importance. (§ES19) Users said that like the French encyclopedia, Wikipedia should be ambitious and to become an icon of the 21st century. (§ES44)
  • On the Swedish Wikipedia, participants said if we follow this theme we can play a political role for spreading information. (§sv20)
  • On the Vietnamese Wikipedia participants commented that if we follow this theme we make everyone in the world to be an active learner and a curious researcher. (§VI13) They suggested we can coordinate with universities and education institutions to improve some specific articles as student assignments. (§VI17)
  • On the Wikidata, regarding theme E some participants commented that Wikidata can't play a significant role in education, because it has no space for explanations, (§DATA28) to improve we have to provide a coherent knowledge (§DATA29) by controlling our content in a more strict way. (§DATA31)
  • During Wikimedia Hackathon participants commented that if we follow this theme we could have a cultural influence, a political influence, and a didactic influence, just by being a neutral source of information. (§wmhack6)
  • Participants in Wiki in Education discussion said that this is one of the most important theme. Engaging with the knowledge ecosystem helps to bring new users to the movement. This theme should be supported by Theme A and B.
