CentralNotice/Request

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
(Redirected from CNR)

Start your request for a CentralNotice banner campaign here!

The aims of this process are as follows:

  • To improve community access to central notice through a clear and transparent process.
  • To improve best practice and ensure greater consistency in campaign implementation.
  • To improve communication around campaigns. Creating clear forums for feedback on campaigns, providing metrics back to campaigns and also a clear method for assessing community consensus for campaigns relating to advocacy.
  • To reduce potential clashes between campaigns

Requests must be made, at minimum, 10 days in advance of any campaign

Step #1 : Review the usage guidelines for CentralNotice
Step #2 : Create your request
Step #3 : Include it on this page.
Step #4 : Add it to the calendar and check for conflicting campaigns in your period for language/geotargeting. Contact the organizers of the other campaigns to solve them!
Step #5 : Notify target projects and geographic affiliates. Add edit diff links to request.
Step #6 : CN Admin & Community feedback [7 days]
Advocacy/Payments: WMF Legal Review [21 days])
Step #7 : Approval/rejection
Step #8 : CN Admin sets up campaign (recommended to allow for up 3 days)
Step #9 : Campaign enabled

List of currently active volunteer CentralNotice administrators:
DerHexer Johannnes89 Martin Urbanec Vermont
For normal requests, a central notice admin will close the discussion. In the areas of advocacy, the stewards team may be called upon to assess consensus.

@JBrungs (WMF): fyi, as banners for surveys require WMF approval. --Johannnes89 (talk) 11:56, 21 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks @Johannnes89. I think this is one for TAndic (WMF) to have a look at. Best, JBrungs (WMF) (talk) 11:59, 21 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@.Anja.: Have you made the local community aware of this upcoming survey (the project page isn't linked anywhere)? Please add a link to the community announcement here, thank you. —DerHexer (Talk) 21:54, 21 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @.Anja.! As this is a more complex survey scenario than is typical for Central Notice (specifically as I understand it, a demographic survey of editors conducted by an external researcher, with the intent to publicly release the dataset), please bear with me as it may take some time to discuss and approve it. As a note, technically the discussion period for surveys is 90 days. Please allow me a few days to get back to you with my questions and comments, and in the meantime: if you have a draft of the survey that you can share here, that would be very helpful to better understand the research. - TAndic (WMF) (talk) 18:49, 22 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TAndic (WMF) I can mail you the draft in the coming days. Is that OK for you? Thank you! .Anja. (talk) 10:01, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That works for me, thank you @.Anja.! My email is on my user page :) - TAndic (WMF) (talk) 13:27, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Janbery: Thanks for the good preparation of the campaign. You can find the campaign setting and banner (preview) here. Before I enable the campaign, I need your approval and ping.
  • We cannot program a break into the settings, but we can switch it on again. Can you please remind us with a ping after the first term?
  • I'm getting an error in the preview because the banner is loading an external Montserrat font. Is this needed? Can we use a different font instead?
  • For the correlation to the other campaign (which I will likely create later today) we have a couple of options: e.g., we can change from 50:50 display to any kind of percentage. But we can also let the 3 displays per 2 days standard setting (can be changed upon your request) of the primary campaign complete first and then show the other campaign (which would be adapted by different priority levels but at a 100 % display for each when they run). What do you prefer? Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 16:24, 16 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Janbery: Did you have a chance to look at these things? I will be pretty busy for the next 1.5 weeks and the campaign is set to start soon. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 21:31, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @DerHexer, thank you for the comments!
    • I will remind you with a ping to turn the campaign on again, this works good.
    • Feel free to scrap the external font, it's more than okay to run it in the default banner font.
    • The second suggestion sounds good, let's put it on 3 per 2 days and then display the other banner.
Sorry for the late reply and have a nice day, janbery (talk) 16:08, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Done accordingly, both enabled. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 21:33, 24 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi! This is my first proposal for a banner, so, please, feel free to tell me how to improve it in any way.

In Spanish Wikipedia, I have been organizing the local edition of the Asian Month for the past 2 years. It is sad to see such an interesting project, and one that started my contributions to the Spanish Wikipedia, loose users every year, going from 42 at its best moment to 18 in last year's edition.

I think a banner could greatly improve discovery of this event, which offers a soft, cute landing for new users, and an interesting objective for more experienced users.

Thanks for your time! --Marion Moseby (talk) 21:39, 23 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Kruusamägi: A little bit of description would be nice, but it looks like the Wiki Science Competition in Estonia to me. ;) Furthermore, can you please provide the banner in HTML/CSS/JavaScript source code? We cannot use wiki markup for the banners. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 22:14, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It is an article competition on science. And yes, that is closely associated with the Wiki Science Competition.
This code isn't suitable? I am reusing an older banner with changed text and it was suitable a year ago :) Kruusamägi (talk) 22:22, 13 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Kruusamägi: Of course I remember the WMDE design. ;) However, I forgot about your request a year ago where I had already spent time to convert the wiki markup into HTML (a link would have been nice!). I could now copy and adapt this so that you can find the campaign and banner (preview). Don't forget to ping me (again ;) ) when you have checked and approved it so that I can enable the campaign. WSC will not be held in 2024 (next time is indeed in 2025), but if countries want, they may have local science photo competitions. Over the years some countries have occasionally also held competitons in even-numbered years, but this is not centrally coordinated. Some other countries, like Estonia, have tried article competition in thouse years (example). Kruusamägi (talk) 12:02, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, as indicated by @Kruusamägi, we do the WSC on our side in France. The aim is to continue the momentum generated by our wikimedien residences in France. DMontagne en résidence (talk) 14:00, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • @DerHexer: Fine with me. Somehow I don't think I saw the banner change last year. IMO showing multiple images makes it looks like "these are the finalists" but not a big deal. We can discuss over on Commons if we should alter it for next year, but for this year no objections! Thanks! — Rhododendrites talk \\ 13:17, 25 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Rhododendrites: I fully agree with you! It always confused me why we are using very old photographs for invitations to the second round. I also felt that they look more like phase 1 winners but they are not. If you have any other photo collection (or create one for phase 2) that this I am open to implement this one! Description - Since the launch of Bangla Wikivoyage, we've faced challenges with the addition of copyrighted content and non-compliant pages, leading to a significant drop in the number of articles after removals. Many key travel destinations still lack content, and despite 226 million Bengali speakers globally, awareness of the project remains low. We also struggle with a lack of an active community, as some members are unfamiliar with the site's policies and editing procedures, resulting in decreased interest in contributing. A competition is being organized to solve these problems. We want a banner for it.

Hi @Afek,

Great to have SheSaid back, and happy to help set up the campaign and banner.

Like last year, we will only enable the campaign for those languages in which the banner + landing page has translations. Can you please supply me with a list of these before the expressed starting date of the campaign? I will try and create a preview of the banner for you to check out over the weekend. I am proposing the Wikipedia banner to start on Sept 2nd, because the WLM banners will also already go live on the 1st. Does that make sense to you? Ciell (talk) 18:49, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi Afek,

Over the weekend I have been working to improve the SheSaid banners by shortening the participant pipeline (number of clicks they need to engage with the landing page). By creating individual campaigns and banners for all languages, the engagement is now much more direct. For this I reviewed all the languages and landing pages you have listed on the Meta page and collected them here in one overview with the information I need for the banners, and noticed that 5 languages do not have a landing page for SheSaid 2024: I have decided to not target these languages anymore, since I assume these are not really participating? No landing page means no available information for participants. For the 4 languages that I, after a month of running the translatable banner, don't have a local language version on the banner text available, they are still receiving the general banner they saw previously, but will still be send to Meta where the participant will have to look up their project manually (instead of being directed to their Wikiquote directly).

I hope this makes sense, please let me know if you have questions! Ciell (talk) 15:00, 6 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
