CentralNotice/Request

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
(Redirected from CNR)

Start your request for a CentralNotice banner campaign here!

The aims of this process are as follows:

  • To improve community access to central notice through a clear and transparent process.
  • To improve best practice and ensure greater consistency in campaign implementation.
  • To improve communication around campaigns. Creating clear forums for feedback on campaigns, providing metrics back to campaigns and also a clear method for assessing community consensus for campaigns relating to advocacy.
  • To reduce potential clashes between campaigns

Requests must be made, at minimum, 10 days in advance of any campaign

Step #1 : Review the usage guidelines for CentralNotice
Step #2 : Create your request
Step #3 : Include it on this page.
Step #4 : Add it to the calendar and check for conflicting campaigns in your period for language/geotargeting. Contact the organizers of the other campaigns to solve them!
Step #5 : Notify target projects and geographic affiliates. Add edit diff links to request.
Step #6 : CN Admin & Community feedback [7 days]
Advocacy/Payments: WMF Legal Review [21 days])
Step #7 : Approval/rejection
Step #8 : CN Admin sets up campaign (recommended to allow for up 3 days)
Step #9 : Campaign enabled

Description - Call for participation to Wiki Loves Africa 2024.

The banner is to promote the Wiki Loves Africa photo campaign. It is a call for participation. It is pretty much unchanged compared to previous years. The contest is open for 2 months. We run the banner only in Africa (though the contest is open everywhere). Every year, 90% or so of our participants are new (and some are retained there after !), so running the banner for IP addresses is very important as it serves as recruitment system for new participants. The contest runs over all African countries. In some countries (around 30), local teams will organize activities. They are very much in ask for the banners (both because it helps promote the contest in countries where wikipedia is not very well known) and because it makes them feel we take them seriously (and we do of course...).

What is the purpose of the campaign? How will you measure the success of the campaign?[edit]

Description - As per our reached community consensus in 2020 Viquipèdia:Presa de decisions/2020/Gestió dels bàners, that has been repeatedly ignored (1, 2) and infringed:

It is decided by majority consensus, without any major objection, that the banners that head the Wikimedia projects in Catalan appear only and if they are previously translated into Catalan and only in the following cases: 1) Initiatives promoted or with approved, direct participation of Wikimedia projects in Catalan language; 2) Economic fundraising; 3) Exceptional health or emergency site notices (in the Catalan-speaking territory or globally). Any other types of notices are decided not to adopt a privileged positioning as banners. Even in these three allowed cases, it is accepted to discuss them individually (case per case) in case that the community understands that they may generate conflict or if their purpose is not clear -especially when it comes to fundraising.

Please, apply finally these rules so that ca.wiki is excluded from the major system of CentralNotice requests. Our community is significantly fed-up that this consensus is not being applied, and this recurrent topic pops up in our Wikipedia's Village Pump with an increasing loss of trust towards Meta and the interwiki global processes. Description - WSC Italy 2023 is the Italian edition of the Wiki Science Competition 2023 contest, which already has a banner running. We would like to ask for a specific banner for Italy, as the request had been originally made to ask for a global banner, that was not possible to get.

Metrics - WSC takes place once every two years since 2015 and within the same timeframe. The main target group is people studying and/or working in higher education institutions. We are especially interested in people who have never uploaded files, but could add quality content. The main metric is the number of files uploaded per country.

  • @DerHexer: New request for August

  • „Leidenschaft in Wikipedia“ teilen klingt irgendwie komisch

--Johannnes89 (talk) 14:59, 27 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Danke dir -New York-air (talk) 15:08, 28 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

The campaign achieves this by creating new articles and improving existing ones in any language, including translations, throughout December. Its objective is to highlight the contributions of African academics who have made significant contributions in various fields, making this information more accessible to a wider audience. Discussion[edit]

Central Notice admin comments[edit]

@Kaizenify and Ibjaja055: there are a couple of issues with your request:

Your banner is not suitable:

  • This [5] is what a standard banner looks like (preview [6]). Example in practice: [7] (preview [8]). A little more complex [9] (preview [10])
  • If you don't want to use a banner similar to existing / standard banners, you'll either need to find a CentralNotice admin who is willing to spend the time setting up such a banner or provide the HTML/CSS/JavaScript yourself. See CentralNotice/Banner guidelines#Code and Help:CentralNotice#Banners for more information on how to code your own banner.
  • Using a standard banner, the image you provided would appear so small that people could not read the text
  • Your image doesn't seem suitable for varying banner-sizes (e.g. mobile vs. desktop)
  • Even though you are not directly using an external weblink, using a QR-code instead at the banner image which opens a link to a WhatApp group doesn't seem in line with CentralNotice/Usage guidelines#Banner requirements

Your request needs some further action:

  • Possible interference with the Wikimedia fundraising campaign at enwiki

Central Notice Settings:

  • It would be helpful if you provided a complete list of all Wikipedia language versions you want to reach out to, if you want to avoid a CentralNotice admin potentially missing some languages versions while scrolling through List of Wikipedias by country or similar pages and choosing for themselves.
  • Are you sure you want to use this banner for logged-out users as well, even though it seems directed to users already experienced in creating/editing articles?

--Johannnes89 (talk) 18:17, 20 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Johannnes89 thank you very much for your time. I have edited the notice based on your observations. Here are the breakdowns;
  • The banner has been adjusted using HTML/CSS/JavaScript
  • The QR Code has been removed from the banner
  • The notice has been added to the calendar
  • The external partner has been removed from the notice
  • The list of countries and languages has been added to it
  • The banner has been restricted to logged in users only.
Ibjaja055 (talk) 06:28, 21 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Ibjaja055 thanks for the updated banner, but that's not exactly what I meant. Based on what you provided I build a simplified version: Special:CentralNoticeBanners/edit/Wiki Loves AfroDemics 2023. You can see the banner code in the „edit banner“ section. Here is a preview for the desktop version which shows some initial problems: Text on images generally doesn't work very well, especially on small banner sizes -> „Increasing the visibility of African Scholars“ is not readable.
And if you take a look at the mobile preview on your smartphone you will notice some further problems: banner text + image overlapping / banner taking up almost the whole screen.
Easiest solution would be to drop your banner image entirely and just use the AfroDemics logo. Possible alternatives: Only displaying the banner on laptop / desktop computers. Or building an alternative mobile version which only uses the logo while the desktop version may still use both images (in that case, the banner still needs some fixing -> drop the text which is not readable). Johannnes89 (talk) 08:53, 21 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Johannnes89 Thank you very much for your time and guidance. I am going with best solution, I have dropped the banner image. Ibjaja055 (talk) 21:16, 21 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Ibjaja055 that's indeed by far the easiest solution, thanks. I've updated the banner accordingly (click the preview links from my previous answer above to review the changes on mobile/desktop). I also created the banner campaign [12]. Please review the settings (especially languages/regions) in case I made a mistake.
While setting up the campaign I noticed something: Do you really want this banner campaign to last until December 31? First of all the banner text itself says December 30 instead of 31. But according to your landing page [13] the contest is over on December 23 anyways? --Johannnes89 (talk) 22:34, 21 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Johannnes89Thank you very much for drawing my attention to the issue. I have amended the date on the landing page to reflect Dec 1-30. We want the contest to last for 30 days. Also, I have reviewed the language and everything looks perfect. Ibjaja055 (talk) 14:24, 22 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Filipinayzd sorry for the delay. I've created the campaign [14] and banner [15] (preview [16] / mobile preview [17]). Please review the settings and check if the banner preview is alright. And could you please specify what do you mean by „Wikimedia Commons, Wikipedia etc.“? All WMF projects? So far I've only selected the two projects explicitly mentioned. --Johannnes89 (talk) 21:48, 25 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Johannnes89, thanks to you. Kindly add these local Wikipedia editions: [pag], [pam], and [cbk-zam]. The most visited sites are Commons and Wikipedia, please also add to the projects: Meta, Wikiquote and Wiktionary where the banner will appear. I cannot see the preview of the banner though but as long as the details show it is good. -Filipinayzd (talk) 02:59, 26 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Filipinayzd done. The banner will be displayed to all those wikis starting at midnight. Johannnes89 (talk) 09:11, 26 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks again. --Filipinayzd (talk) 15:19, 26 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi @Johannnes89, @Filipinayzd: the landing page for this campaign is only available in English, and I'm afraid that displaying the English banner to all visitors from the Philippines is a bit of an overkill, so have turned the banner off for anons. We need to try and set the CN banners as unobtrusive as possible, and as narrowly tailored as necessary. Ciell (talk) 16:41, 27 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Paula should this campaign be geotargeted to specific countries or do you want the banner to be displayed to all eswiki readers?

I've created Special:CentralNoticeBanners/edit/16 dias de activismo (preview [18], mobile preview [19]). You might want to consider shorting the text a little bit (e.g. removing „en Wikipedia“ which I think is obvious anyway?). --Johannnes89 (talk) 16:17, 25 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

And am I correctly assuming you want the banner to be displayed to users with language settings es-formal and es-419 as well? Please check the campaign settings [20] before this can go live. Johannnes89 (talk) 16:27, 25 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hi, @Johannnes89. Thank you for your comment, I've changed the message according to your suggestion. Everything else is fine, you're right about the language setting. I approve both the campaign and the banner (with the shortened message). Thank you very much again. Best, --Paula (WDU) (talk) 19:03, 25 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Ok, I enabled the campaign, starting at midnight. Please note for future requests that CentralNotice/Usage guidelines#Approval asks for a comment period of at least 7 days, so please don't request just two days before the campaign is supposed to start (especially as it may take a while for one of the few active central notice admins to react to your request). • @Kruusamägi: I've created campaign and the interesting WMDE banner adaption. ;P Please check both and the preview. Usually, we only allow banners in project languages with a translated banner and landing page. As you were also requesting a display in English Wikipedia, an English banner text as well as an English landing page (at least an English summary on top of the page) would be helpful. I can enable the campaign after your approval. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 10:27, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@DerHexer: Thank you! It seems ok to me.
Estonians use English Wikipedia even more than they use Estonian Wikipedia. For that reason it would be nice to show that banner in English Wikipedia for the Estonian IP addresses to remind the need for a local language version as well. As the campaign is only for the Estonian speakers (who sometimes use English language settings), then I'd better avoid English translation, as whoever doesn't understand that banner isn't in the target group anyway (or would be using Russian Wikipedia instead of English Wikipedia). But feel free to skip the English Wikipedia, if that seems too much for you. Kruusamägi (talk) 20:01, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Metrics - WSC takes place once every two years since 2015 and within the same timeframe. The main target group is people studying and/or working in higher education institutions. We are especially interested in people who have never uploaded files, but could add quality content. The banner is intended to be minimalist and the main metric is the number of files uploaded per country.

There are two sets of countries. Actively participating countries, that request for a more intense campaign, and the rest of the world category. Almost all countries run the competition from November 1st to December 15th and would need banner impressions especially in the start and end sections of the competition. The international upload form will function until the end of the year. It is not a problem if there are some other banners as two months should be a sufficient time period for the rest of the countries for at least some banner impressions during this time.

Countries that need special attention are France, Ireland, New Zealand, Spain, South Africa, Switzerland, and the USA, as they have more limited possibilities of using other banners. Russia and Belarus can be skipped with the international campaign (Russia already collected images). With Estonia and Finland, no banners are needed in their home wikis.

Discussion[edit]

Hi Kruusamägi,

A quick note from me. First, I am Julia and I work for the WMF Advancement team. Thanks for listing this banner. I see that several of the countries you are aiming to run the banner in will have the English fundraising banners up from the 28th of November to the 31st of December. These are: Ireland, New Zealand, and the USA (we also run in Canada, the Uk, and Australia but I do not see them listed). Additionally Switzerland will also run a fundraising campaign on their sites in December. In your banner settings, you state that the banners will be displayed to all users. The fundraising banners will be displayed to non-logged in users which means that in the countries I listed above, non-logged in users will see 10 impression of the fundraising banner first, before they will see your banner. As your campaign already starts in early November, hopefully the overlap with fundraising banners will not cause too much problems with your campaign. Please let me know if you have any questions. Best, Julia

That is perfectly fine. We have had this overlap every time this competition has been held (2015, 2017, 2019, 2021). The longer upload period in the international upload form should also help to mitigate this issue.
For the actively participating countries, it would be good to have "one campaign" at the start and then the other at the end part of the competition. For the rest of the world, the number of impressions is less important. Countries with local language versions will sometimes also use sitenotice banners in their language versions and might only want to target people looking at other language versions from their respective countries.
BTW. Wikimedia UK is interested in promoting the international upload form, but they would not organize their own local competition.
We are still finalizing the exact list of participating countries and fine-tuning the start and end dates of upload campaigns. Kruusamägi (talk) 12:25, 24 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Sounds good! Thank you. JBrungs (WMF) (talk) 06:41, 25 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
  • @DerHexer: I've added a banner version for Ukraine with our landing page. Could you replace the international version with the Ukrainian one for Ukraine when you have a chance? Thanks a lot! --AntonProtsiuk (WMUA) (talk) 13:32, 20 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@AntonProtsiuk (WMUA): Your landing page is linked on the participation page which is linked in the banner of the global campaign (that is also enabled for Ukraine). For reasons stated below, we cannot create individual campaigns this time. Sorry about that, —DerHexer (Talk) 20:40, 21 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
DerHexer, thank you for your response. I understand that CN admin resources are quite limited, and I don't want to overburden you personally with additional work you don't have the time for, especially after you've carved out time for this during your vacation. As a general approach, though, it's unfortunate that a more relevant banner cannot be switched on. The international website is of very limited utility to actually get people to check out the Ukrainian landing page (they need to read a lot of English-language text to get to it, which is a tall order). Do you think it might make sense for us at least to submit a separate banner request for part of the contest time (e.g. from December 1 or December 5) that would simultaneously switch off the international one for Ukraine / Ukrainian-language wiki projects? AntonProtsiuk (WMUA) (talk) 13:25, 22 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I've split UA into a separate banner and campaign. I am not sure what the problem was exactly. --Base (talk) 19:51, 3 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Central Notice admin comments[edit]

@Kruusamägi: The linked banner page is not fully helpful for us to create the campaign. On the one hand, we cannot use wiki markup but only HMTL, CSS and JavaScript. On the other hand, there should only be one banner with translations enabled. Can't we reuse the 2021 campaign and its banner? Certainly, the year would need to be changed, but it would make things much easier. Additionally, I'm pretty busy these days (vacations and sports event for Commons), the campaign comes a little bit late so that another CN administrator might take this one. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 22:20, 30 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@DerHexer: Feel free to reuse the 2021 campaign if that is easier. What should be looked at more closely are the links (where are people directed), what countries are involved and what are the start and end dates at specific countries. For the not actively participating countries it is more relaxed. Kruusamägi (talk) 06:39, 31 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Competition is starting in the first set of countries (Estonia, Finland, France, Indonesia, Ireland, Malaysia, North Macedonia, Spain and the USA). Poland would follow at November 6th and many more countries at November 15th. Kruusamägi (talk) 23:30, 31 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
If it helps, the banner config in 2021 is here https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:CentralNotice&subaction=noticeDetail&notice=Wiki_Science_2021 Pyb en résidence (talk) 13:51, 1 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Vermont and Martin Urbanec: I will really have 0 time to work on that until next Monday at the earliest. Can you help out? Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 20:58, 1 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Everything works? A new set of countries will start in a week. Kruusamägi (talk) 10:31, 8 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Kruusamägi: Obviously not, no campaign has been created until now. And I'm not surprised by that: It cannot work like that that you throw some pages at us and hope that we make some sense out of it. First of all, CN campaigns cannot alternate per country, only per language. Therefore, there must be two separate campaigns (requested) for Spain and Argentina, for example. We could alternate the landing page link per target language but that won't work for Spanish, obviously. The same with countries like Switzerland where more than one language is spoken. Secondly, campaigns should run at the very same time. Every change in start or end date requires a separate campaign. It would have made sense that for each language/country a separate campaign would have been requested and/or created. It's a hell lot of work for Wiki Loves Monuments and handled by a separate CN admin who works on that for multiple days. The same would be needed for such a global complex campaign. This cannot be requested only shortly beforehand, especially with the very small number of (active) CN admins.
What I can offer is a global campaign for all the given countries that I've identified (please check!) from 15 November to 15 December (that's where most of the countries have their competition running). For that purpose, I've cloned the 2021 banner which you can find here. I've copied the proposed translations and marked them as published, but you will never know (the TranslateExtension is a nightmare!). For that reason, I've added a [ Help with translations! ] button so that people can fix all the mistakes that might have come up with the cloning (that's a nightmare, too) and copying of the texts. The banner contains a general link to the global landingpage. That's not optimal at all because that page is English only right now. But, as said, an alternating link would only be possible for a handful of proposed languages/countries. So this is supposed to be the hot fix for your request in this context.
Please check the changes and the preview, ping me with feedback or approval so that I can enable that campaign. As said, I'm currently on vacations and cannot provide anything else than what I've said above. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 00:05, 10 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@DerHexer: I can create a separate request for every country + the rest of the world, but I seriously doubt, that this makes less work for CN admins. And as you likely know from WLM, countries often wait until the last minute to decide if they participate or not. But I guess the small number of active CN admins is my fault ;)
Better global landing page link would be: https://www.wikisciencecompetition.org/contest/ Else is fine.
As it would be shown only a few times, then banner translations are less relevant anyway and that banner could be used in substantially more countries or at least ones where there are plenty of English speakers (like Canada, Australia, India, the UK, and why not all the EU). This is still an image competition and it even requires participants to add English descriptions. So if that is a hot fix to have at least some banner, then it should be as wide as possible. This competition is not limited to countries, that have local competitions (like WLM is). Everybody could participate.
So you want separate requests for Argentina, Spain, the USA, France, Switzerland, Italy, Ireland, Poland, Ukraine, Indonesia, Malaysia, and South Africa? (others could likely manage with the generic banner)
Kruusamägi (talk) 01:13, 10 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Kruusamägi: We don't do global campaigns in countries/languages that do not participate or have a local ambassador. I've enabled the global campaign with the corrected link. I think that separate campaigns don't make much sense now. Please check how the campaign goes and if we need to make some adjustments for a better distribution. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 20:56, 14 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@DerHexer Thx ! I think that the banner is not enabled, maybe the parameter "enabled". Pyb en résidence (talk) 12:25, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Done. —DerHexer (Talk) 12:29, 15 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@DerHexer@Kruusamägi Could the campaign have a normal priority? right now the banner is hidden in France, because She said and Wikipedia Asian Month campaigns have a higher priority. Pyb en résidence (talk) 19:57, 21 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
After the maximum impressions for these campaigns are shown, the lower prioritized campaign should be displayed. Anyway, I've changed back to normal priority for this campaign. —DerHexer (Talk) 20:21, 21 November 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@DerHexer The Italian contest is running from 1st to 31st December. Would it be possible to have a banner for Italian running until the end of the contest with a medium-high priority? There wasn't any edition in 2021 so it would be really useful to make the contest reboot properly. Do I need to do anything else? I've also slightly modified the text for the banner. Thank you.--Ferdi2005(talk) 16:37, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

If the settings are touched, based on current submissions here we also need it for Nigeria, another country active in December. Also, even if the deadline is close (but they should postpone it), I feel quite strange about Thailand. Did the sitenotice even run there? It would be nice to push it a little bit more.
In general, it's my feeling over the years that a whole week does not make a stronger difference than a couple of days i my experience, any users log in regularly. So if we could ge a couple of days more "globally" before the December, 15th deadine, that would also help and not be not invasive.--Alexmar983 (talk) 16:44, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

--Alexmar983 (talk) 16:44, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Ferdi2005: The linked pages are not very readible with these many countries, texts, dates, etc. Therefore, could you please submit an individual request for your campaign? I will be on the road this weekend to take photos for Commons so that I might not have the time, but the easier the request, the more likely that it will be handled. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 21:02, 6 December 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

  • @DerHexer: @Martin Urbanec: @Vermont: - It is just to let you know that the request is made and the visual elements are all loaded. Please let me know if there is any adjustments to suit the central notice process. Thanks. --Afek91 (talk) 09:45, 19 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Afek91: It's still a while to go but some remarks which will help the CentralNotice administrators to process your request:
    • Please add your campaign to the CentralNotice/Request page as instructed when you created the campaign. Otherwise CN admins could easily miss it.
    • I'm not sure that the very wide banner version will work on mobile. Maybe you can also create shorter versions, too. Furthermore, on smaller devices we have to use reduced file sizes so that photos could look pixelated. Let's check that later.
    • Not all CN admins (including myself) have the technical skills to create a white square where the logo would be embedded. Some texts in that part are not mentioned either. An HTML version of the banner provided by you would things much, much easier.
    • Please don't use bit.ly. We have our own Wikimedia URL Shortener.
    • Global campaigns can only run for participating communities, ideally with local ambassadors, translatable banners and landing pages (I see that work has started on this). Additionally, I cannot remember a campaign that lasted three months, that's very long! We will have to choose a very low impression diet.
    • It seems to be a follow-up of a previous campaign. Can you add a link to the former request page? Thanks and best, —DerHexer (Talk) 12:33, 19 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
DerHexer, seems probably easiest to make the gradient in css, make a three column element within it for the image overlay, first text block, and white-background second text block. No idea how that'll look on mobile, so maybe let's not do three. Or, we can do three, but have the white column only be the logo, with no additional text.
If we were to do that...I don't think we have just the image of the people anywhere. Afek91, before I ask you to upload the background-less image of the people, can you clarify the copyright status of those photographs? The banner mockup is uploaded to Commons as own work, with no indication of derivatives; did you take all four of those? Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 12:41, 19 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    Thanks @DerHexer and @Vermont
The link for last year's request is here: CentralNotice/Request/SheSaid - a single colour as background would also be fine. We will provide the Wiki short link - thank you for your guidance. I will leave @Afek91 to answer the other design elements. Islahaddow (talk) 15:37, 19 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Islahaddow, you don't need a short URL, just a landing page. People don't type in the url manually, they can just click on the banner. If you want statistics, the best we can do (I think) is send people to a redirect page, and presumably the only people who go to that redirect would be ones who clicked on the banner. Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 19:50, 19 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    Thanks @DerHexer , @Vermont and @Islahaddow.
I added the request to the CentralNotice/Request and updated the banners on the request.
@DerHexer for sure I did not take the photos, I mentionned the files used in the description of the banners on Commons. Afek91 (talk) 15:38, 21 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
@Vermont: Can you proceed with this request? Your technical skills could be of help here. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 16:31, 22 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Possibly. I'm quite busy for the next 4 weeks, but afterwards I should be able to process this.
Afek91, we can't do a 3-month campaign. Most are usually around 2 weeks, a month maximum. What 4 week time period works best for this campaign?
Additionally, we can't do this in all languages. We can use the list of participating communities, provided the people organizing them locally can provide a translation. Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 21:45, 24 July 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
I would say, as the campaign starts on the 1st October, it would be better to start 2 weeks before and the 2 first weeks of the campaign. So from the 18th september to the 15th October. For the languages, I thought may be if we could reach new languages throught the central notice.
    Thank you Afek91 (talk) 10:32, 7 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Afek91, I would recommend running it during the first 4 weeks of the campaign. We generally don't like to run banners for things that people cannot currently participate in. (with some exceptions, like sign-ups for limited capacity events, etc.) Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 17:40, 22 August 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Afek91, sorry, I forgot to follow up. Thoughts on the above? Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 15:21, 19 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
It works for me. I just would like to ask if we could try new languages as one of our goals is targetting more languages to join the campain.
    Thanks Afek91 (talk) 15:31, 19 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Afek91, you can run it in more languages if a) the event is happening in those languages and b) you can get people to translate the banner text and event/landing page into those languages. The landing page is currently translated into nl, it, ko, and ja.
My current thought is...two campaigns, one for Wikiquote and one for Wikipedia. Both 4 weeks, but a much smaller % and impression limit for Wikipedia than Wikiquote. October 1st to 29th.
And...in terms of the banner, I don't think we can use the images of people on there. Not only will it look bad on mobile, but there's no way to provide sufficient attribution unless clicking the image will send readers to a place where that attribution info can be easily found. Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 16:35, 24 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thank you. For the banner should we use the last year's one? For the languages, should I list here all of the participating languages? Afek91 (talk) 10:51, 29 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
    Afek91, yes, please list all participating languages. Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 13:13, 29 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Arabic, Hausa, Italian, Gungbe, Swahili, French, Spanish, English, Ukranian, Catalan, Bengali, Bikol, German, Slovene and Tagalog. Afek91 (talk) 17:44, 29 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Afek91, are you sure these languages are accurate? The landing page is fully translated only into Japanese and French. Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 17:16, 30 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
And I just realized you never added this campaign to the calendar, which is a step in requesting a campaign. In the future, please read the guidelines before making a request. These steps are outlined on the request page. As an example, your initial request asked for a 3-month long banner campaign on all languages on Wikipedia and Wikiquote targetting all types of users...which, as we noted, was entirely infeasible, and is far out of scope of the usage guidelines.
And now, you've asked for the campaign to be run in 15 languages, only two of which are translated on your landing page. Those are not "participating languages", and I am not putting an English banner linking to an English page in front of thousands of people who do not speak English. This request, like your initial one, would not have been made if you had read the banner guidelines.
I want to clarify something: we are volunteers. CentralNotice is run by volunteers. We do not have a translator team, we do not have funding, we do this in our free time to help people who want to present their events/drives/etc. through CN banners. Our one ask is that you follow the clearly-designated steps to make this process functional. Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 17:40, 30 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Alright, an update: this request is on hold for now.
I took a look at the requested landing page, and it seems to be a review of what SheSaid is, not information about how to get involved. There is a "Get Involved" button...however, the target page's opening paragraphs do not describe how to get involved as an individual, and is only available in English. Clicking on the "participating communities" links, those seem to link to local landing pages for SheSaid in general, which themselves link to this year's event on the project. In short: the requested landing page is 3-4 clicks away from actually finding information about how to get involved in the event, there is insufficient indication about which links to click to get to those pages, and they are not available in the languages requested. Optimally, a landing page would explain to the reader what the event is, how they can participate, and what happens when they do so.
There are local landing pages a few clicks away from the main page on Meta for this year, however, those were not included in this request and I could only find 3. Afek91, please provide links to the landing pages on projects where there are local landing pages.
I've cloned the 2022 banner to make shesaid_2023, campaign shesaid_2023_wq. Considering this is Wikiquote-only, I think it would be best to only run this on Wikiquote.
Also, I'm not sure if I'll have the capacity to support this request further. Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 18:55, 30 September 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Central Notice admin comments[edit]

Hi Afaq,

Per your request I've created the campaign along the lines we also had the campaign in 2022. On one side, I am very much aware that most of the translations by volunteers only come in when the banner is active. On the other hand, my colleagues are correct that targeting a community in their own language and thereafter only offering them the information in English is quite rude. We run into a similar issue with International Women's day every year. In line with that it really helps to not design the landing page as if it is a Wikipedia page: keep your information short and simple, with easy recognizable images (your team is good at that!) as to take them to their local wiki in their own language as quick as possible.

As an example: I find the intro from our current Celebrate Women page quite text heavy still, but the paragraphs underneath are very straight forward. It does not solve the issue for participants that don't have any knowledge of English, but hopefully their colleagues come to their rescue soon with the translations of the landing page.

Per @Vermont:s suggestion we now have two campaigns, that both direct to the original landing page suggested. One campaign for the Wikipedia's that shows up 6 conjecitive times per 28 days, on the other one for the Wikiquote has no diet set. Both target world wide, and the compromise lies in that for the Wikipedia's people will only see the banner every 4 weeks (in restricted languages), and for the Wikiquotes that people that are really already in the expected focus group for the campaign will see the banner untill they click to close.

Both projects will receive the same banner, which is the same as last year and the preview is here. Please let me know if it's okay so I can enable. Ciell (talk) 17:20, 9 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thank you. Yes It is okey, you can enable.
Thank you all for your time. Afek91 (talk) 17:24, 9 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Thanks, campaigns are now enabled. Ciell (talk) 17:35, 9 October 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Discussion[edit]

The duration here may seem overly long, but what I'd like to do is to only show the banner two days before our kickstarter meetup every month. The meetups are on the first Wednesday of each month, so I'd like to show the banners (at 100 % if possible) only for that Tuesday and Wednesday (ending at 20:00 Norwegian time when the meetup is concluded). Is that possible? Jon Harald Søby (WMNO) (talk) 16:48, 18 April 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]

@Jon Harald Søby (WMNO): Sadly not. I could set a local storage item that could be reset once per month, however, this can only be connected to the first display of the banner for each user separately. It cannot be related to a specific date. I fear that we have to change the dates once per month. But that wouldn't be a problem, it will just take few seconds. Can you add the dates when it's supposed to run to the request? And ping me early enough before each display? I can create the campaign and banner. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 18:01, 31 May 2023 (UTC) PS: “All (for those two Wikipedias)”, I see three Wikipedias in the request. ;)Reply[reply]
@DerHexer: Thanks! I think the approach of setting up one campaign per time is best.
If possible, it would be nice to have a banner for the upcoming event on Wednesday June 7. We can just do a simple standard banner for this run at least.
Runtime: Tuesday June 6, 00:00 UTC to Wednesday June 7, 15:30 UTC
Target languages: Norwegian (no), Norwegian Bokmål (nb) and Norwegian Nynorsk (nn)
Is anything else needed at the moment? Jon Harald Søby (WMNO) (talk) 13:52, 5 June 2023 (UTC)Reply[reply]
