Description - After a hiatus of 5 years a group of volunteers has proposed a new online edition of Wikicite in hybrid format: one day in-person, focused on Switzerland, followed by two days online.

The main goal is to reconnect with former participants and revitalize an event whose themes are now more relevant than ever. To ensure wider visibility, we propose displaying the banner for one month, with an impression diet to avoid being intrusive while maintaining a longer time window to reach a broader audience.

This extended timeframe is essential, as the event is designed to be inclusive of multiple time zones—from New Zealand to the Americas—ensuring participation from a globally distributed community.

Metrics - Number of participants

[edit]

The request comes from the Wikicite community. I have also seen that there is no banner in August, so it would be easy to manage. The request is for one month and will be for a wide audience but setting an appropriate impression diet to don't be invasive. I can take care of it as I will do for itWikicon's banner. --Ilario (talk) 21:26, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Ilario: Please keep in mind that according to the CN guidelines, global campaigns have several requirements: This campaign is scheduled to run longer than two weeks so that all targeted communities should be notified in advance. As this does not make sense, please shorten the campaign to a maximum of two weeks which should be a sufficient time span for an event invitation anyway. — Furthermore, banner text and landingpage should be marked as translatable as early as possible and should be translated into the main languages. Since this event is English only, it could be sufficient to have that information available in multiple languages in the banner and the landingpage in English only. But without that no global campaign could be approved or should be enabled. — It's great to see WikiCite back and in Switzerland! :) Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 17:17, 20 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@WASP-Outis please read the CentralNotice/Usage guidelines:

  • CN campaigns need approval by the local community, especially when you want them to run longer than the default 14 days intended for such campaigns. You've mentioned approval by the Iranian Wikimedia User Group, but the linked page doesn’t seem to mention a banner and it’s not clear to me if they have the authority to approve a banner for the Farsi Wiki community.
  • CN banners don’t use wikitext, the are created using a mix of HTML, CSS and Javascript. Please check out the details in our usage guidelines and either provide proper banner code or provide a logo and 1-2 lines of text (50-70 characters) which we can use to create the standard banner for you. If you don’t want the standard banner, you need to provide the code yourself.
  • Your linked landing page cannot be used for the banner, as it doesn’t contain the necessary information for anyone clicking on the banner on how to participate etc.

Hello, I would like to record here the communication of the request for publication on the Esplanada and on the Wiki Movimento Brasil discussion page.Danielly Figueredo (Projeto Mais+) (talk) 11:22, 26 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hello all! As I have pointed out to Danielly Figueredo (Projeto Mais+) on this discussion, neolanguage is not allowed on Wikipedia in Portuguese's main space. This banner request should not be approved unless community consensus is reached to allow it or unless the text on the banner does not include neolanguage. The project proposing the banner has been involved in a recent conflict with the community on this subject [1] [2], and I fear this banner will spark further escalation. Thanks. --JPeschanski (WMB) (talk) 22:22, 27 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

━ Albertoleoncio Who, me? 09:28, 29 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Danielly Figueredo (Projeto Mais+) my thoughts in CentralNotice/Request/Mais Povos Originários 2025#Discussion also apply to this banner: There's too much text (should be 1-2 lines and 50-70 characters) and the image is not very suitable for a banner, because it contains text (should be a simple icon/logo instead).

We also need community consensus in order to run the banner, it appears from the comments above that's not the case? --Johannnes89 (talk) 13:26, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Znyadzi please carefully read the CentralNotice/Usage guidelines:
Best --Johannnes89 (talk) 18:59, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Johannnes89,
  • I have added the Central Notice Request to the Central Notice Calendar and enabled translations for the campaign's related pages.
  • However, @Nokib Sarkar worked on a banner which he tried to share for confirmation of whether the banner suits the campaign and communicates the theme thereof but shared a different link. I have requested that he shares the right link to the banner for confirmation.
  • I will like to confirm the banner prepared by @Nokib Sarkar before we use the standardized banner to avoid duplicate banners for the same campaign, however, we can continue with the standardized banner if it is able to communicate the theme for the campaign.
Thanks and Regards Znyadzi (talk) 10:56, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Africa Wiki Challenge Central Notice Banner Znyadzi (talk) 13:10, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
All links for this request: campaign, banner banner preview.
@Znyadzi, @Nokib Sarkar I agree with comments made by both @Johannnes89 above and @Trizek below:
  • per usage guidelines, please don't use images as banner texts. This is what your banner looks like for me on mobile/android, because images aren't dynamic enough. This is the consequence of using images instead of words&code. (And this is why you preferably test the banner on several devices, before you leave those boxes checked in the settings.)
  • please share your request and/or proposal in time, so you don't have to ping people, and admins and community members have ample time to review the request and to help and support you - .... and you don't get 4 admins reviewing and commenting on a banner that is not ready to run yet.
  • imho the campaign settings are okay, besides the runtime for the campaign and the projects+language targeting that Johannes already mentions.
  • Did you coordinate the dates for your banner with the organizers of Wiki Loves Earth, since their banners also target Wikipedia? (and Commons, but I agree with Johannes that a banner for a campaign for a writing event should not (or only rarely) target the image repository - remember to target as narrowly tailored as possible to the event you are organizing)
Ciell (talk) 17:28, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell, thank you for providing the clarification on the key considerations.
I have reviewed the details for the Africa Wiki Challenge 2025 campaign and confirm their accuracy. However, I have observed that the current banner along with its corresponding preview does not effectively communicate the campaign's central theme, which is critical for its success.
I would appreciate it if you could update the banner text to align with the content presented in this template: Template:Africa Wiki Challenge 2025 Central Notice Banner .
Best Regards - Znyadzi (talk) 11:18, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I would appreciate if the color of the font is changed to blue other than black.
Thanks Znyadzi (talk) 11:42, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
That's way too much text. CentralNotice/Usage guidelines recommends 50-70 characters in 1-2 lines of text. The current banner design has 56 characters in 2 lines of text. You are requesting 3 lines with 156 characters, which doesn't look good, particularly on small devices.
Please take care of the other concerns I mentioned above as well: Either select a shorter banner runtime of max. 2 weeks or get community approval by starting discussions on all local wikis where you want to show your banner for a longer period. Johannnes89 (talk) 17:54, 30 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Znyadzi I made a few changes to the banner: I added the link with call for translations of the banner text :) and changed the color of the text to 'navy blue' (#000080) per your request here, and the font to Montserrat as you used in your template example. Please let me know if the color is correct, or you would like a different shade of blue. A full list of webcolors is available on enwp - I would need the #-code.
Then I took your lines of text and created a new call to action (which needs to be short!), "Africa Wiki Challenge 2025: Reclaiming Our Narrative - Join the Africa Wiki Challenge by registering on Meta-wiki today!". See again the banner preview and let me know if there need to be more changes.
I also took a look at your landing page, and tried to help out with the translation tags, but that is not my expertise. It would be great if someone on your organizing team could read up and master the translation extension, so you can create even better information for the participants Ciell (talk) 08:12, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The mobiele view still looked a bit distorted, so I changed some settings of the logo's. It's mainly the AWC image that pushes everything to the right. I have no real idea how to solve this (that's beyond my coding knowledge), but I think it's readable now. Ciell (talk) 08:58, 31 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell,
As requested, the files used in the template the Africa Wiki Challenge Logo and the Open Foundation West Africa logo Znyadzi (talk) 10:59, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The content in the Banner is also okay.

Hello @Ciell,
I wish to know when the Central Notice Banner will be approved and what is pending now for the approval of the Central Notice Banner. Znyadzi (talk) 11:23, 12 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not Ciell, but you still need to take care of multiple issues with the CentralNotice/Usage guidelines we've mentioned in previous comments [5][6][7]:
  • Banners usually need community approval, especially if you want them to run for longer than 14 days. You'll need to get consensus on all language versions of all projects affected by your banner, we can only make an exemption if you select a time period of max. 14 days for your banner.
  • Your landing page should be translated (or at least translatable) to the same languages you are targeting with your banner. I recommend turning to Meta talk:Babylon (once the page is ready according to Meta:Internationalization guidelines) in order to have translation admins turn on the translation feature (mark the page for translation).
  • You haven't submitted any banner translations yet [8] even though your team should be capable of doing at a least some translations (you can use this link [9] and change the langue to start with banner translations).
  • In order to avoid en:banner blindness campaigns should be targeted as narrowly as possible. Your event only mentions Wikipedia, I still don't understand why the banner should be displayed on projects like Wiktionary or Wikinews.
Johannnes89 (talk) 13:07, 12 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Johannnes89,@Ciell
Please note that I have adjusted the date for the Central Notice Banner in the Central Notice Calendar Page to facilitate the approval process as soon as possible.
The date has been adjusted to run for 14 days (from 1st July, 2025 to 14th July, 2025). Znyadzi (talk) 12:30, 19 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Johannnes89 Znyadzi (talk) 08:54, 24 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell,
The date for the Central Notice banner has been adjusted to run between 1st and 14th July in the Calendar.
Kindly confirm and the details for approval.
Let me know if there are any more concerns.
Best Znyadzi (talk) 15:53, 24 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Great to learn you've landed on a new date @Znyadzi!
Now, since you want many languages to join your event through the banner, please ask your team and the communities to help you translate the text in as many languages as possible! Here is the link to start translating, and you can change the language in the top right. More information on the translatable interface is on translate wiki.
I have also left a message on the Meta Babylon talkpage to get someone to activate the translation tags on your landing page, so people can start translations there as well. Ciell (talk) 18:39, 24 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Johannnes89 is it okay for you as well, now that the campaign will have a run-time of 14 days? Ciell (talk) 18:45, 24 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell I'm ok with it, although ideally I would have wished for an answer why the banner needs to target so many non-Wikipedia wikis given that the landing page only mentions improving content on Wikipedia. But that's not important enough for me to block enabling the banner. Johannnes89 (talk) 19:11, 24 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, I reviewed the information on the landing page again, and I agree. While the multi-year grant for the OFWA includes more, this specific event focuses on article writing only, and has one special prize for the best image on Commons.
@Znyadzi: do you think it's fair to leave out some of the wiki-projects that are less about article writing, can you maybe make a selection? Ciell (talk) 20:20, 24 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Znyadzi: Since a grant was approved for this campaign, I am more on the positive side of approving it. But, since the banner is not ready yet, unfortunately, you have to wait a bit for me to design the banner as per your design. And, sorry for the late response, I am wondering why this request was not noticed earlier. Nokib Sarkar (talk) 17:31, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Also, can you please share me the logos or graphics (must be uploaded to wikimedia commons) that were used for the banner? Since we are fast-tracking, I would be trying my best. Nokib Sarkar (talk) 17:35, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Nokib Sarkar,
Below is a link to the template created for the banner with the relevant logos that were used for the banner uploaded to commons for your perusal.

Thanks for reaching out. Znyadzi (talk) 17:45, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Znyadzi Can you check the campaign whether I listed all the required regions and languages you wanted? Also, please keep in mind that the calender is pretty red (busy) starting June 1st. So, I might have to lower the impression diet to accommodate all the requests. Nokib Sarkar (talk) 18:14, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Nokib Sarkar, The contest is running in all of Africa and therefore covers all Africa regions and African languages.
Thanks. Znyadzi (talk) 18:30, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Znyadzi, to fast-track things, I used the code for the previous year banner Banner and adapted that. Can you please check if the banner looks okay to you for time being? Nokib Sarkar (talk) 19:09, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
If everything looks okay, please let another admin adjust the diets and enable it. Bye. Nokib Sarkar (talk) 19:29, 27 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Nokib Sarkar,
The link you provided to the banner redirects to Wikimedia Foundation Transparency Report/2014.
kindly check and revert.
Thanks. Znyadzi (talk) 10:17, 28 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Znyadzi
The banner goes to Event:Africa Wiki Challenge 2025/Home. However, there are two things that question me:
  • there is no text on your banner, just images, which makes it not readable for everyone;
  • {minor] the background of the banner makes the colours of the logo not being readable.

Description - The Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos (WPWP) is an annual campaign where Wikipedians across Wikipedia language projects and communities add photos to Wikipedia articles lacking images. This is to promote the use of digital media files collected from various WP photography contests, photowalks organized by the Wikimedia community, on Wikipedia article pages. Thousands of images have been donated and contributed to Wikipedia Commons via various advocacy programs, photowalks, and contests including international photography contests such as Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves Africa, Wiki Loves Earth, Wiki Loves Folklore, etc. Yet relatively few of these photos have been used on Wikipedia articles. Today, the Wikimedia Commons hosts millions of photo images but only a tiny portion of these have been used on Wikipedia article pages. This is a huge gap that this project aims at bridging

For the admin taking up to work on this request, here is the request from 2024. Ciell (talk) 17:41, 4 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • @T Cells: I have reused the banner from 2024 which is different from the requested one for 2025. Furthermore, like last year I only targeted those countries which signed up for the competition. Please ensure that the local contacts inform their local communities before the start of the campaign. Usually, any campaigns running for more than two weeks have to have this proven and have to provide as many translations as possible. Since this is a returning campaign, I will just encourage you all to do that and have created the campaign and banner (preview). Check everything, approve it and ping me so that I can enable the campaign. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 15:50, 24 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Fyi, designing the banner myself (I hope, haha). Ciell (talk) 10:38, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Johannnes89: if you have time, can you help me add a bottem-background to the banner I'm designing here? I was thinking to add something like
{
background: url(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d2/Willemstad_CN_banner.png);
background-size: auto 66px;
background-repeat: repeat-x;
position: absolute;
width: 100%;
height: 56px;
overflow: hidden;
transform: translateY(-36px);
}
but I can't get it to work! :)) Help is appreciated. Ciell (talk) 10:44, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Are you looking for something like this?
.cnotice {
position: relative;
overflow: hidden;
background: url(https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d2/Willemstad_CN_banner.png);
background-size: auto 100%;
background-repeat: repeat-x;
color: #202122;
border: 1px solid #a2a9b1;
border-radius: 2px;
margin-bottom: 1em;
cursor: pointer;
font-weight: 500;
}
Or do you want to have two backgrounds, one regular background for the text and this image below the text? (not sure how to do that)
--Johannnes89 (talk) 13:10, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I don't need two backgrounds, no worries. This almost work like I intend it to: can I pin this one to the bottom, and about 50% smaller in height? Ciell (talk) 08:10, 15 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Nevermind, I changes the transparency of the image, this works for me! Thanks. Ciell (talk) 08:14, 15 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell: Are you sure about using an image of a person who is still alive and where the photo was not taken for Commons but an external site from where it was copied to our media archive? Wrt the CN guidelines, other forms of images should be preferred. I don't consider it to be a blocker, though. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 16:49, 20 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@DerHexer welcome back, and thanks for checking!
The Anefo photo collection that is kept in the Dutch National Archive has been thoroughly checked, and it's images are safe to use.
The image of the person is that of the first female prime-minister in the Netherlands, and in the image she was in the Netherlands for an official visit, so I see no problem with using her image in the banner. The Dutch wikiproject on the matter okayd the banner as well. Ciell (talk) 18:41, 20 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Myotus please read the CentralNotice/Usage guidelines. Banners are made with HTML and CSS, not Images or Wikitext. You can either ask for the standard banner (preview) by providing us with 1-2 lines of text (~50-70 characters) and an icon/logo to be used for the banner or you need to create the banner code for yourself. This [10] is nothing we can work with. Please also note that campaigns running longer than 2 weeks need community approval, you are currently requesting a campaign running for five weeks which we cannot do unless both the English Wikipedia and Commons community are fine with that. --Johannnes89 (talk) 11:27, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the feedback and pointing me in the correct direction! I will get to work on making the changes and reduce the request to two weeks. This is the first time I have made a banner request, so it is a teachable moment for me. Myotus (talk) 13:25, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Myotus I've created campaign [11] and banner [12] (preview [13]). Please check everything and confirm it's alright. Johannnes89 (talk) 09:59, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Johannnes89 Thank you for your work! As I mentioned before, this is the first time I have requested a banner so hopefully I know what to check. It looks good, and I don't see any issues. Links go to the right page. Its Geotargeting Minnesota, on Commons and en.wikpedia. Maximum of 2 impressions. Running July 1 - 15. Thanks again! Myotus (talk) 00:01, 10 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, that's exactly what I wanted you to check to make sure I didn't mistakenly select the wrong options or made some copy+paste errors. Note that there are two impressions per cycle, the cycle restarts after 7 days -> users will see the banner four times, if they use their account in both weeks. Hello, I would like to record here the communication of the request for publication on the Esplanada and on the Wiki Movimento Brasil discussion page.Danielly Figueredo (Projeto Mais+) (talk) 11:22, 26 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Johannnes89 (talk) 13:24, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, @Johannnes89! We are making the requested adaptations little by little, but thank you for pointing out! Can we check the changes we made to this banner? Thank you very much for your help! Danielly Figueredo (Projeto Mais+) (talk) 09:51, 12 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Danielly Figueredo (Projeto Mais+) I've created the campaign [17] and banner [18] (preview [19]). Text and icon are fine now.
I've currently not included Wikidata and Commons, as the event appears to be about Wikipedia – please try to target banners as narrowly as possible, because larger projects already receive too many banners and we want to avoid en:banner blindness.
I've noticed that the landing page asks for a donation which all event participants need to make [20]. Pinging @JBrungs (WMF): Does this make the banner a fundraising banner instead of simple event banner (which would require your approval per CentralNotice/Usage guidelines#Special Kind of Banners)? @DerHexer and Ciell: fyi in case you are aware of similar banner requests in the past and how they were categorised.
Lastly given the increasing number of banner requests by Projeto Mais I want to point out that CentralNotice/Usage guidelines#Policies for affiliates and WMF staff asks organisations running more than two banners per year to consider having a CentralNotice admin on staff in order to reduce the burden on volunteer CN admins. Johannnes89 (talk) 11:15, 12 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the ping. I need to check this with our legal team so please wait with enabling this campaign. Best, JBrungs (WMF) (talk) 11:29, 12 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Johannnes89@JBrungs (WMF)@DerHexer @Ciell
Hi everyone! We understand the points that were raised and we appreciate you bringing these concerns to our attention.
We’d like to clarify that our banner is not a fundraising campaign. We don’t keep any of that money — the donation goes directly to a small nonprofit based in the Florianópolis region. Each minicourse directs donations to a different nonprofit. In this case, it’s Acontece Arte e Política LGBTI+. The suggested donation is R$10 (approximately USD $2), and its main purpose is to engage and retain people who sign up for the course, as we’ve had many cases in the past where participants dropped out even after registering. It’s a symbolic amount meant to encourage commitment. Additionally, this is part of the project’s broader strategy to support local initiatives working with minority causes, which we see as essential.
It’s also important to mention that our minicourse is an introduction to all three projects — Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata — not just Wikipedia. The word “Wikipedia” is in the title simply because it’s the most widely recognized among them, and helps attract people who are unfamiliar with the broader Wikimedia ecosystem.
Regarding the number of banners and the overload it may cause, we’re truly sorry for that burden. We’ll thoughtfully consider the possibility of having someone manage the Central Notice. The challenge is that we don’t have a technical team with the coding knowledge or infrastructure to run that smoothly — and our current team is already overwhelmed with several other areas of the project. We know this doesn’t provide an immediate solution, but we want to be transparent about the limitations we’re facing.
We remain open to dialogue and suggestions.Danielly Figueredo (Projeto Mais+) (talk) 15:01, 12 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Danielly Figueredo (Projeto Mais+),
please feel free to read 'staff' in this context, as 'dedicated volunteer' as well. As long as people have a experience with the communities and are comfortable with wikitext and the basics of HTML and CSS, I think we are happy to help them onboard. Ciell (talk) 16:30, 12 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Ciell. Thank you again for your response and for your attention to our request. Regarding your suggestion to have a volunteer helping with Central Notice administration: we already have someone in mind and will also reach out to others to try to put your suggestion into practice.
Once again, thank you for your support and guidance! Best regards,Danielly Figueredo (Projeto Mais+) (talk) 22:18, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @JBrungs (WMF), hope you're doing well!
We wanted to let you know that the banner is scheduled to go live this Sunday, June 15th. Just making sure you're aware of the date, in case it hadn’t come up yet.
At the moment, we’re waiting to hear from you regarding any guidance or final approval you might want to share before we move forward. As mentioned previously, based on our understanding of the relevant guidelines, this doesn’t fall under a request that would require formal review by the Foundation.
That said, if you need any further clarification, we’re fully available and happy to assist.
Best regards,Danielly Figueredo (Projeto Mais+) (talk) 22:20, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Johannnes89. Thank you so much for creating the banner — it looks great! I just wanted to let you know that the final version is approved. As soon as we receive confirmation from the Foundation, you can go ahead with this version. Thanks in advance!
Best regards,Danielly Figueredo (Projeto Mais+) (talk) 22:19, 13 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Danielly that's why it is important to link CN requests early at CentralNotice/Request in order to avoid last minute issues :) Johannnes89 (talk) 08:17, 16 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Manfred Werner (WMAT), since you are a CN admin yourself now, I assume you will take on the design of the campaign and banner yourself? Ciell (talk) 09:00, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

He already did. Campaign [21] and reused banner [22] from CentralNotice/Request/wikidaheim2025. I'm giving my approval as a volunteer CN admin. The campaign already has community approval and runs on a low diet. You can go ahead and enable it once you are ready Manfred. Johannnes89 (talk) 09:46, 8 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The request comes from the Italian community, and the banner will be in Italian only. I’ve asked not to apply geotargeting, as there are many Italian speakers living abroad who could benefit from the scholarship. Similarly, the proposals submitted to the program committee are not limited to those residing in Italian-speaking regions. The request is for one month, considering that these are summer months typically associated with holidays, and two weeks might not be enough to properly inform the community. --Ilario (talk) 21:26, 29 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Just to make sure: You will create the banner, correct? Given that it's a community banner, no approval from other CN admins is needed. Johannnes89 (talk) 11:28, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

According to the CentralNotice guidelines, this information is required:

What type of survey is this?
Other type (please specify): I want to gather representative data about a population of readers or editors for research purposes or to inform strategy in my affiliate. For doing this, we want to repeat the 2023 community survey that targets registered users with questions about their experiences as editors, roles, obstacles, support and demography.
How many responses do you hope to get?
We want to reach a similar number as in the previous survey, about 1,000 responses.
Which populations should the survey banner be displayed to?
Specific criteria: Logged-in users (“editors”).
Which wikis and countries will the banner display to?
German Wikipedia, users only based in Germany
Will you be collecting any of these types of data?
Emails – for optional research participation contact
Demographic information – for getting an overview about the German community and its development since the last survey
How will you publish or share your data?
We will publish aggregate anonymous data in a report on the project page.
Link to your project page (where the survey will be linked and respondents can find out more about the project): dewiki project page
Link to your privacy statement** (it can be on the same page as the project page): dewiki project page, the same text will also be shown on the first page of the survey

Hi @Vic Sfriso, just a quick note that we are running several fundraising campaigns in June. All of them will run on English Wikipedia in Austria, Greece, Japan, Malaysia, Spain, Sweden, and South Africa as well as on Spanish Wikipedia in Spain. This means that during that time your banner would be shown after a non logged in reader has seen the maximum of impressions of the fundraising banner (normally about 10x) on English of Spanish Wikipedia in those countries. Let me know if you have any questions. Best, JBrungs (WMF) (talk) 05:11, 21 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi JBrungs, thanks for the information and your help. I have no questions so far. Vic Sfriso (talk) 17:34, 23 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Not sure if this is the right place to discuss it, but any chance we can get the banner size reduced? It's massive compared to other banners we usually see. ARandomName123 (talk) 21:30, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jeremyb fyi I agree that the banner size should be reduced. Johannnes89 (talk) 21:35, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it is very large. Cremastra (talk) 21:39, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed; when I saw the banner (while I was creating a new article for this campaign, ironically) I was like yikes! Please reduce the size ASAP if possible. Funcrunch (talk) 21:43, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
+1 to that. Banner takes up 1/3 of my screen on PC. EF5 (talk) 21:46, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I tried to disable campaign while we work on size, it now seems disabled without a corresponding log entry? I don't particularly trust the logs since phab:T393482.
I was starting with the banner from last year and then I think using the SVG bumped up size? I'm open to any thoughts about how to do this differently. cc Johannnes89 --Jeremyb (talk) 21:51, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
(after it already showed as disabled then I changed type to Article writing. which I had already done before I thought?) --Jeremyb (talk) 21:57, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Honestly I'd recommend we replace it with actual text. While there is alt text, text in images is not optimal for screen readers. Would also fix the size issue. Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 21:59, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
agreed, I advised against text in images long ago. originally we had even more text in image.
I have some other things to do offline for a couple hours. If anyone else wants to help tweak it to that would be welcome. Jeremyb (talk) 22:10, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jeremyb: I'm going to remake it from one of the templates, and will wait to re-enable it until you've reviewed it. Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 22:44, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jeremyb/Jeremyb-phone: Are we good to re-enable? (campaign, banner) If so, please do so, or ping me and I can. Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 19:04, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I enabled a couple mins ago with your campaign settings, apparently again without producing a log entry??!
someone made another version we may incorporate later but for now turning this on. Jeremyb (talk) 00:59, 3 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
The new version:
In styles I changed the background color to #fcfcfc, so now ".notice" looks like this:
.cnotice {
position: relative;
overflow: hidden;
background: #fcfcfc;
color: #202122;
border: 1px solid #a2a9b1;
border-radius: 2px;
margin-bottom: 1em;
cursor: pointer;
font-weight: 500;
}
I centered the images inside the divs, so now ".cnotice-logo-container img" looks like this:
.cnotice-logo-container img {
display: block;
max-width: 100%;
max-height: 100px;
width: auto;
height: auto;
margin: 0 auto;
box-sizing: border-box;
}
And the changes are all inside the div called "div class="cnotice"":
:::::::::<div class="cnotice" id="wiki_loves_pride_2025" dir="ltr"> ::::::::: <a class="cnotice-full-banner-click external text" ::::::::: href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Event:Wiki_Loves_Pride/2025"> ::::::::: <div id="cnotice-main"> ::::::::: <div class="cnotice-logo-container"> ::::::::: <img src="File:Barba lgtb - Obra derivada 2025 - 01.png" alt=""> ::::::::: </div> ::::::::: <div class="cnotice-logo-container"> ::::::::: <img src="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wiki_loves_pride_text_en.png" alt=""> ::::::::: </div> ::::::::: <div class="cnotice-logo-container"> ::::::::: <img src="https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wiki_loves_pride_date_en_2025.png" alt=""> ::::::::: </div> ::::::::: </div> ::::::::: </a> ::::::::: </div> :::::::::

Vic Sfriso: Noting that I've edited the banner to not show to anonymous users, to limit to 40% of traffic, and to run for two weeks. The previous banner settings would have shown this to hundreds of millions of non-editors over the course of the month. Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 22:16, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Vermont, I think it makes sense to not show it 100% of the time, but I believe it is very important that the banner runs for the entire month as the event runs for all of June. And maybe the English wikipedia has a lot of traffic from signed in users, but this is not the case so much in the Spanish and French wikipedias, so could this part in particular be changed back? Thanks for your time.--Freddy eduardo (talk) 22:52, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
No. Please see the CN usage guidelines. Banner blindness is a serious (and unfortunately growing) problem, and every event organizer wants their event's banner to run as long as possible. Campaigns longer than two weeks are reserved for banners with "specific community consensus" to run for longer, which does not generally include editing events.
This banner can run for two weeks in total. If you want to spread out the two weeks, that could work, e.g., this week and the third week of the month. Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 22:57, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Vic Sfriso, to add to my comment above: Unfortunately we weren't able to use the three png files included as banners. CentralNotice banners are written in HTML and css. This is noted in the usage guidelines. While we could just plop the banner png in there, it's text would be unreadable to screen readers, its colors and fonts would not change with user preferences, text would not scale on screen size, and its dimensions would be fixed. If the elements of the pngs were available as separate images, like this one, then it would be possible to include them in the banner. However, we as CN admins are volunteers with very limited time. If you want a custom banner (with more than 1-2 images or specific image styling), you will need to provide the code. This is also noted in the usage guidelines. Best, Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 23:13, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

One question: I did announce the banner request in the Spanish village pump and there was no opposition to it. Would that count as community consensus at least for Spanish?[23]. Regards,--Freddy eduardo (talk) 23:04, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

@Freddy eduardo: I'd consider that sufficient to run the banner on the Spanish Wikipedia, but this does not constitute a "specific community consensus...for a longer run". Best, Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 23:16, 1 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Vermont. First of all, thank you for your input and for engaging in this discussion. I'm also a member of the Wikiproyecto LGBT+ and wanted to share some additional context about the Pride Month campaign and the proposed banner. Before organizing this year's event, we reached out to many Wikimedia Chapters and User Groups to gather their feedback and support. You can find a list of the supporting affiliates at the bottom of the event's main page: Mes del Orgullo 2025. This outreach was not limited to this year—several affiliates also endorsed and participated in the 2024 edition as seen here. These affiliates, which represent the vast majority of UG engaging on eswiki, were contacted individually, and many actively contributed to the event, including by distributing prizes and promoting participation. We believe this demonstrates a broad level of community backing that could reasonably be interpreted as consensus in support of both the event and the banner campaign. That said, we’re happy to continue the conversation and ensure everything is aligned with the guidelines. Thanks again for your guidance and support. Nacaru · Talk ✉ 15:04, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I think the issue was not the breadth of support but the lack of an explicit mention of duration in those discussions. or that's my guess. --Jeremyb (talk) 15:23, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Jeremyb, the event is related to Pride Month, I strongly believe it was clear for all parties during discussions that it would be running for the whole of June. Nacaru · Talk ✉ 15:38, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Nacaru: There does not exist a "specific community consensus" for a longer run. If you want to run this for the full month, you need specific community consensus from each project. This is made clear in the CN guidelines, and this the third time I have pointed to this line on this page. Regarding your note about affiliates being contacted about the banner, "community" refers to the communities of the projects on which the banner would be running and not the affiliates who organize events on those projects.
However, it's probably not too late to get that consensus. Once we re-enable the banner, we can do so for two weeks. You (or whoever's organizing this) can start discussions on the English, Spanish, and French Wikipedias proposing to run this banner for the full month. If that consensus exists after maybe one week, we could enable it to the end of the month. Regards, Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 19:46, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Vermont, thanks for specifying. I assume a village pump or talk page thread where there is a vast majority of users showing they would be okay with the banner would count as community consensus? Nacaru · Talk ✉ 22:26, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Nacaru: Village pumps are best — it should be a place of discussion for the project and not just not the topic of the banner (i.e., not a Wikiproject LGBT+ talk page). Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 22:35, 2 June 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Banner is WikiLovesPride_2025.

I started for now with 3 impressions. (but see above, disabled for resizing) Looking for any thoughts about how to manage diet throughout the month. Maybe including a periodic reset (weekly?) and/or raising impression count later to give a few more to people that got earlier and allow new people to catch up.

Multiple dates. Next dates yet to be announced. —DerHexer (Talk) 20:42, 11 April 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pharos, I had to disable both campaigns that were live since yesterday for WCNA.

  • Per the phabricator:T388080 ticket, please ensure these and all of your future banners are compatible with the Mediawiki dark-mode settings.
  • Also, please make sure to specify the campaign type in the drop down in the campaign settings to allow people to filter through their preferences the types of campaigns they see.
  • Don't forget to list your campaign in the calendar and coordinate with others that might be targeting the same country/projects/languages. Currently the banner for International Women's Days is also running in the USA.

Best, Ciell (talk) 14:49, 6 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, just noticed this now. I believe we've now addressed the issues that have been raised. Pharos (talk) 16:46, 9 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell, @Pharos I'm sorry, but the new "dark-mode" supported banner has low contrast ratio (2.66:1) and fails WCAG 2.0 standard of at least 3:1 for web accessibility. The background grey has to brighten up to #CCCCC at the minimum to create sufficient contrast. OhanaUnitedTalk page 18:10, 11 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Pharos has fixed the background colour, thank you. In the future, between a user preference (dark mode) and an accessibility requirement, accessibility requirement must take precedence. OhanaUnitedTalk page 14:47, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hope that helps, Quiddity (talk) 00:56, 9 May 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Description - WMDE offers editors of Wikipedia a range of support. This includes but is not limited to trainings, funding for their own projects, organising of events and so on. This support is not known by quite a few volunteers of the German Wikipedia. With this campaign, we want to make people aware of the WMDE community portal. The community portal presents the different aspects of Wikimedia Deutschland's work

Depending on the targeting, users receive a different landing page. The banner, which is aimed at inexperienced users, refers to learning offers from both WMDE and the community. The banner for experienced users refers to a page in the community portal that presents the various training courses.

Metrics -

We hope that the WMDE Community Portal site will become more popular. It is therefore of interest to us that the “News” page in the portal in particular is observed by more users.We will also track whether the campaign has a (positive) influence on the editing behavior of users who we refer to as occasional editors. The tracking is secured by our in-house data unit.

What banner(s) will you use? What will be your landing page?

Banners - The banners have already been created and implemented. Our own CN Admins can start the campaign if the campaign has been green lit by a volunteer admin:

The campaign will be announced on the German Wikipedia in the course of next week. This will also allow the community to submit objections or communicate requests for changes. The link to the communication will then be added here.

We are also planning to repeat the campaign in August. The planned period is 11 - 18.08.2025. --Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 15:04, 6 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The campaign was announced in WP:Kurier. More information was posted (and linked from Kurier) in Community–Portal Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 12:56, 11 February 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hello @Ciell,
would you mind looking over this CN application? Ideally, neither Johannes89 nor theHexer will be involved in this request, as it means mixing their roles as volunteers and employees. Thank you! Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 11:32, 3 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Hi @Merle von Wittich (WMDE), just to let you know I have your request on my radar. I hope to get to it this week! Ciell (talk) 19:44, 10 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Merle von Wittich (WMDE), am I observing correctly you designed these two banners (linked above), but did not yet create the campaign(s)? Do you expect me to do that? Ciell (talk) 15:45, 12 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Ping @Merle von Wittich (WMDE)? Ciell (talk) 16:06, 14 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Normally our FunTech Team can create those campaigns – I only need the approval of the campaign. Is this fine with you or would you prefer a different proceeding? Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 17:04, 14 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
All affiliates need a volunteer CN admin (like me), to sign off on their CentralNotice camapigns. A CentralNotice is the banner (front-end visual) + the campaign (technical settings): therefore, if your FunTech Team is going to create the campaigns themselves, I'd like to see the campaign and the technical settings before you enable. Ciell (talk) 17:53, 14 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell I would not mind If you would create the campaign, but at the moment I am not sure if this is last approved version of the banners; to my understanding there have been some code changes after the first implementation. Therefore I am still waiting for this info. – So let me either get back to you either with the campaign settings of the FunTech Team or the go ahead, that you can create the campaign :) Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 07:47, 17 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I am not 'big' for coding: if you'd like a full review I can ask another CN admin to do that. But because you choose to run a customized banner it is your responsibility to test it across all platforms. I just want to see the final banner and the campaign settings - I can do this myself if you prefer, but might not have time available before the weekend. Ciell (talk) 15:43, 18 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I have no expectations that you will check the banners :) I realize that this is within our scope! - Unfortunately, I still don't know whether the current banners have been implemented. - At the moment I'm still hoping that WMDE/I will make progress here by 24.03. and that you can then release the campaign for the planned run (last minute).
With every hour that passes, I assume that we will have to postpone the campaign period.
Thank you very much for your work and availability despite the current situation. Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 13:43, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell
I have an update \o/:
I have now moved the start of the campaign back a day, so that ideally there will be less stress for you when it comes to the approval! Have a wonderful weekend! Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 15:44, 20 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the updates, @Merle von Wittich (WMDE)! I have reviewed and enabled the campaign, the banner should go live tomorrow morning. Ciell (talk) 12:31, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! <3 Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 13:28, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Merle von Wittich (WMDE) one more question: I notice your fun-team has set up the campaign including a sample rate of 1 for legacy hiding and impressions. I have never come across a sample rate like this, and learned (the hard way) that WMF sometimes uses history logging samples at a rate of 0,01%. Is your team sure a sample rate of 1 makes sense, and does WMF agree with it being used like this? Ciell (talk) 13:31, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I have to forward that question to @Kai Nissen (WMDE). Merle von Wittich (WMDE) (talk) 13:34, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Ciell: Actually, this is something we set for all of the fundraising campaigns we run and it's part of the "muscle memory" when setting up the campaign. It dates back to a Central Notice introduction I received when I started working at WMDE in 2011. Thinking about it now, I'm sure we don't need to set a sampling rate at all, so I'll disable it. We measure banner interaction (and also banner display) using Event Platform. Kai Nissen (WMDE) (talk) 17:25, 24 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for explaining @Kai Nissen (WMDE)! Interesting that you received information about this during the onboarding almost 14 years ago: the Help:CentralNotice does not mention the 'special features' options, and I sometimes feel a bit in the dark on how the can be used. The small paragraph about banner history logging was only added recently. I'd love to learn more about this, if you ever have the time to write your experience down. @Johannnes89: could you please check this again? best --Christian Philipp (WMAT) (talk) 10:57, 28 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the ping @Christian Philipp (WMAT)! We appreciate if @Manfred Werner (WMAT) creates the campaign & banner via the CentralNotice interface, once Meta:Requests for CentralNotice adminship/Manfred Werner (WMAT) is successful. It just needs approval from volunteer CN admins per CentralNotice/Usage guidelines#Policies for Affiliates and WMF Staff, but can be created & managed by yourself.
Per CentralNotice/Usage guidelines campaigns running longer than two weeks usually require community approval. Even if this is an established campaign, the unusually long duration should be discussed with the de(-AT) community.
Personally I think the duration might be ok, if the banner is running on a low impression diet and with limited traffic, in order to make sure it doesn't annoy editors (and readers) again and again for many weeks... Johannnes89 (talk) 18:40, 2 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Johannnes89: @Christian Philipp (WMAT): I have written a notification to the community on de.wikipedia for this banner and also for the second campaign in January (CentralNotice/Request/GLAM digital spring) at Wikipedia:Projektdiskussion. As I am new to this I am not sure how to ask for approval from volunteer CN admins (I could ping some from the list of admins, but I don't know who is active). --Manfred Werner (WMAT) (talk) 12:56, 9 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. You can create both the banner as well as the campaign via the CN admin interface. Once you link the created campaign & banner on this page, volunteer CN admins can take a look. If no-one reacts, you can ping one of the active CN admins mentioned at CentralNotice/Request, preferably (or Ciell who is not on the list, but also active and very helpful as well). Johannnes89 (talk) 19:06, 11 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I have changed the start date of the campaign in January from 1st to 7th, also talked about it with Christian. It's because I am on vacation around new year's eve and have very limited internet access in this time, so it would be difficult to act if there are issues with the banner or the campaign. --Manfred Werner (WMAT) (talk) 13:22, 16 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Manfred Werner (WMAT): Banner is activated, thanks. There was a problem last year with the banner conflicting with coordinates at the upper right corner of a page (difficult to see, not clickable), which I thought, I have fixed by adding some extra empty space below the banner. But obviously this does not work. Do you have a better idea to fix this? best --Christian Philipp (WMAT) (talk) 10:03, 7 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The campaign settings have been set [32] and the banner created [33]. CN admins, please take a look and let me know if it is alright like this. It's the first time I created a CN. Thank you! --Manfred Werner (WMAT) (talk) 15:36, 13 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Martin Urbanec:@Vermont: Hi, as I am new to this and also that kind of CN admin who is here in the role of a representative of an affiliate, I need and would like to ask you to take a look at the two campaigns I have set up - if they are alright (also technically, I am not sure about the close button here) and can be activated. Thank you! --Manfred Werner (WMAT) (talk) 17:37, 18 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good to me. I don't see a close button in the CN interface preview for some reason, but it works in the onwiki preview [34].
Restarting the banner cycle every week effectively means users will see the banner 12 times which seems a bit much to me. I suggest either limiting it to two impressions per cycle (= 8 total impressions in 3,5 weeks) or extending the cycle a bit, e.g. to 67435200 seconds (1.5 weeks -> 9 total impressions). Johannnes89 (talk) 11:49, 30 December 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I have reduced the maximum impressions to two.
So, I am just asking again because I am new to this, what should be done now? Will someone activate the campaign?
There is also another one I created that should have begun today, CentralNotice/Request/GLAM digital spring, but is still marked as open. --Manfred Werner (WMAT) (talk) 16:46, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I've activated the campaign, giving my approval as a volunteer CN admin.
I suggest trying to ping volunteer CN admins again for the GLAM request (those without ties to WMF or affiliates like WMDE). Perhaps checking the different CN logs [35] helps finding someone active. The backlog at CNR suggests, that most volunteer CN admins are currently busy, but given that it's just about approving the banner + campaign you created, there should be somebody who can spend 5 minutes to do that. We'd like to continue the campaign from last year (request). The banner will only be running for two days before the first Wednesday of each month, and will be targeted to users with less than 100 edits.

I can handle the administration of this banner myself, no intervention necessary from other CN admins. :-) Jon Harald Søby (WMNO) (talk) 13:12, 6 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]
