What is the purpose of the campaign? How will you measure the success of the campaign?[edit]

Description - The "Wikiconcurso Arquivo Nacional" is a wiki-contest on the Portuguese Wikipedia. It is part of a series of activities throughout this year of 2020 conducted in collaboration by the Wiki Movement Brazil User Group and the Brazilian National Archives. The wiki-contest aims to stimulate the participation of the community of Wikipedia editors and publishers in improving the entries related to the Brazilian National Archives GLAM intiative, which has been taking place since 2016. WMNYC Symposium on Wikipedia and COVID-19[edit]

What is the purpose of the campaign? How will you measure the success of the campaign?[edit]

Description - To attract greater attention and participation at the regional Symposium on Wikipedia and COVID-19 in the geography supported by Wikimedia New York City. The COVID-19 pandemic in New York City is currently considered the global epicenter, and this event aims to answer questions the public may have about Wikipedia and Wikimedia's coverage of the pandemic. Four speakers are presenting, all of whom are active contributors to the topic area on Wikimedia projects, but bring different perspectives, backgrounds, and interests. This request is unusual because we are asking for a subnational banner in a particular a US metropolitan area, see March's request at CentralNotice/Request/Women's History Month and Art+Feminism NYC 2020, which indeed had to be cut short because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Discussion[edit]

  • Support Support - This is an important event by experienced Wikimedians that will address a timely and important topic. The notice will be limited to "southern NY and northern NJ" so this is an entirely reasonable request in a time when in-real-life events are restricted. - Fuzheado (talk) 20:24, 5 May 2020 (UTC)

Movement Brand naming proposals[edit]

What is the purpose of the campaign? How will you measure the success of the campaign?[edit]

Description - (This is an initial draft request) The 2030 Movement Brand project is organizing a call for feedback on naming convention proposals (see Preparing for feedback on the naming convention proposals). After months of work and discussions, it will be the first time when actual proposals for naming conventions will be presented by the team. Even if this project is working on a brand system for Wikimedia organizations (affiliates and the Foundation), there have been enough signs showing that this is a topic interesting to individual contributors across the board. The team strives to get feedback from as many contributors as possible, from as many projects as possible. CentralNotice is a tool that can help achieving this goal. Suggestions to fine tune the details of this campaign are welcome.

Metrics - The banner points to a survey. We want to have at the very least 1000 survey participants, and 4000 would be a successful number.

What banner(s) will you use? What will be your landing page?[edit]

Banners - Draft pending new survey dates: "Help build a brand for the Wikimedia movement that inspires new people to join us. Take the survey on proposed changes to names for the movement, affiliates and the Foundation. (7 May - 21 May)"

Discussion[edit]

  • I really don't think it's a good idea to go straight to a survey without any discussion of the proposals first. Seems like a clear application of polls are evil. (Not suggesting that an eventual clear yes/no vote wouldn't be a good idea, but jumping straight into one without thorough discussion first is something that tends to work out badly.)
Also, two weeks seems like overdoing it. (Frankly, any banner might be overdoing it. There are lots of major proposals all the time that could use input, and they have to make do with just the normal channels...) Assuming a survey is to be run, please make the format public in advance to allow for comments/changes regarding the format. --Yair rand (talk) 21:59, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
    • The notion of "polls are evil" refers to settling disputes by taking polls. This is not what the project is doing here. This is a survey to gather quantifiable structured feedback from as many contributors as possible with backgrounds as diverse as possible. This survey to individual contributors complements a survey for affiliates and a space for feedback in Meta. All this feedback will inform next steps as defined in the project timeline. As said above, we are explicitly seeking advice about the specific terms of this campaign: dates, target users, and so forth. The two week period corresponds to the survey period. Who sees the banners, how many times and for how long depends on more factors than those dates. Qgil-WMF (talk) 08:15, 1 May 2020 (UTC)

Discussion[edit]

  • In 2019, many of the WLE campaigns ran for two straight months, even in places where the CentralNotice had been on for most of the year. I think an effort really needs to be made this time around to rein in overuse. None of the WLE campaigns should be running for two months, and countries with CN overuse should in particular have shorter campaigns. --Yair rand (talk) 17:21, 23 April 2020 (UTC)

Discussion[edit]

  • @Smirkybec: This hasn't started yet, right? Because there are several issues with the survey:
    • The options under "If applicable, which of the Wikimedia Foundation's other free knowledge sites do you contribute to? (Select all that apply)" do not allow one to select more than a single option.
    • "Which of the following do you prefer to use to communicate with fellow Wikipedians?" also doesn't allow multiple options, but probably should.
    • "To what extent are you interested in participating in each of the following events? - Other (please specify)" doesn't have a place to specify, it's just a bar.
    • "Which languages can you fluently read and write?" also only allows a single option.
    • "What is your gender? - Other (please specify)" doesn't have a box.
    • The proposed settings for the banner include surveying users who aren't logged in, but the description is to survey "editors", and many of the questions don't seem suited to readers. "What motivates you to edit Wikipedia?" Who says they do? Most people answering the survey would probably be those who have never contributed. If there's a need to survey readers, it might make sense to give them a separate, trimmed survey.
  • --Yair rand (talk) 17:11, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
@Yair rand: Thanks for testing it, despite having text boxes enabled for those ones you highlighted, I went in removed them and added them back - they seem to be showing up for me now but seems to have been an issue with Qualtrics saving my previous edits to the survey. If you want to double check, and see if those changes have come through, I would appreciate it. Back in 2016 we recruited everyone reading and/or editing Wikimedia Projects from Irish IP addresses and we only got 78 respondents, most of whom were registered editors. I want to replicate the conditions of the last survey as closely as possible, and given the rate of response in 2016, I don't think the banner visibility is an issue. Smirkybec (talk) 21:59, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
@Smirkybec: Most of the issues seem fixed, but the third point I mentioned above still doesn't have a text box. (Also, there isn't a second page, is there? I didn't click the button at the bottom to check because I didn't want to accidentally submit it and mess up the stats.) --Yair rand (talk) 22:05, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
@Yair rand: Ah, I see the issue now, that is fixed. There is only one page :) short and sweet! Smirkybec (talk) 22:12, 30 April 2020 (UTC)

Central Notice admin comments[edit]

Given this has a qualtrics links, I think this is approved, but could somebody from the Foundation state it here please? --Martin Urbanec (talk) 18:22, 20 April 2020 (UTC)

Yes, I have been working with @RMaung (WMF): on this and have requested that she confirm that here. Smirkybec (talk) 10:54, 23 April 2020 (UTC)
Perfect! --Martin Urbanec (talk) 21:09, 24 April 2020 (UTC)
@Martin Urbanec: can you clarify what you mean by "approved"? WMF makes Qualtrics accounts available for community use and provides some feedback on survey design, but the Learning & Evaluation team doesn't play a role in approving community surveys. Apologies if I am misunderstanding! RMaung (WMF) (talk)
@RMaung (WMF): Hi, sure. I mean any kind of approval that is implied at CentralNotice/Request (User Surveys/Advocacy/Payments: WMF Legal Review [21 days]). However, CentralNotice/Usage_guidelines#Fundraising says only "external surveys" needs to be explicitly approved? Not sure what's the correct understanding nor who should clarify it, now that Seddon is on his secondment. --Martin Urbanec (talk) 18:46, 27 April 2020 (UTC)
@RMaung (WMF): and @Martin Urbanec: what does this mean for getting approval of this banner? I submitted it a month ago, and was not made aware of any extra approvals needed in that time. Smirkybec (talk) 14:16, 29 April 2020 (UTC)
@Smirkybec: I'm not in any position to approve a banner-- my guess is that this is not considered an "external" survey, but I'm waiting to hear back from folks in the WMF legal department for guidance or for someone more knowledgeable than me to weigh in here! I'm very sorry for the delay. I've not been asked about CentralNotice distribution of a community survey before. RMaung (WMF) (talk) 15:30, 29 April 2020 (UTC)
@RMaung (WMF): Thanks for that update. I am just repeating what I did for the 2016 survey, which used a Central Notice, so I'm just trying to replicate the same conditions to aid with comparability of the results. There appeared to be no such issue with the banner at that point. @Martin Urbanec: This was the only discussion I had about the banner at the time, and it was about the text/banner layout: User_talk:MZMcBride#Central_Notice_follow_up Smirkybec (talk) 15:57, 29 April 2020 (UTC)

To be honest, I'm not really sure how survey banners works, and I'm sorry if my comments indicate this is a bad request. No, I'm just trying to determine the correct procedure for survey banners. I'll try to get some comments from more qualified people on this. Best, --Martin Urbanec (talk) 21:20, 30 April 2020 (UTC)

We'll have a reply for you tomorrow, @Smirkybec:. The relevant staff members are in a timezone that is past their evening now. My apologies for the implicit delay to the start of this request. [addendum: although it looks like Yair_rand has some good points above that need to be fixed first anyway :)] Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 21:30, 30 April 2020 (UTC)
@Quiddity (WMF): Thanks very much, I appreciate that. Unless the guidance has changed since 2016, it was Edward Galvez who suggested we use the Central Banner then (I looked up my meeting notes with him). All I wanted to do was replicate the conditions of the first survey as closely as possible. (I think am in that same evening timezone...) The issues above have been resolved, despite Qualtrics giving me the runaround! Smirkybec (talk) 21:59, 30 April 2020 (UTC)

Approved with note: Hey all. This survey can proceed but for logged in users only which was the same target for the 2016 survey. Seddon (WMF) (talk) 16:27, 4 May 2020 (UTC)

Thanks Seddon (WMF). @Smirkybec: Could you update the request, so it's clear what do you want to use as banner text/image? --Martin Urbanec (talk) 16:50, 4 May 2020 (UTC)

Thanks Seddon (WMF) and Martin Urbanec. I can't preview banners (I don't have a token to view them), but I have added the text from the 2016 banner above and this is how the banner was put together last time, if it makes sense? https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:CentralNoticeBanners/edit/irish_user_survey_february_2016 Smirkybec (talk) 17:47, 4 May 2020 (UTC)

Discussion[edit]

This contest was first was created in 2019 by a few wikimedians, and I am acting as their support from now on. It actually started running as early as the 1st of May, but the banner request was posted on the wrong page. The main person I am in contact with is AirSThib who co-founded the contest. --Adelaide Calais WMFr (talk) 10:56, 14 May 2020 (UTC)

Central Notice admin comments[edit]

@AirSThib: & @Adélaïde Calais WMFr: Looks perfect, though also here the image proposed for the banner is less then suboptimal. I hope that Rodelar has the time today to crop the image without the text, then I will create your banner. In the meantime, please also add your event to the calendar and look for possible conflicting banners (targetting same country/language in the same time). Ciell (talk) 15:06, 14 May 2020 (UTC)

  • Hi Ciell, thank you very much ǃ I added the event to the calendar and checked ː there don't seem to be any other banners set up on french speaking wikipedia for that period. The one before stops on the 18th. I would say go ahead and use the second file but I'd rather wait for AirSThib's green light. Adelaide Calais WMFr (talk) 16:23, 14 May 2020 (UTC)

  • @AirSThib and Adélaïde Calais WMFr: please check the banner preview. NB: this actually is a perfect example the kind of banner where the Site Notice (on the French Wikipedia) would have been a perfect fit, but I understand from your posting here, that nobody responded to the request made? Is the community okay with showing a banner? Ciell (talk) 17:34, 14 May 2020 (UTC)
  • Hi Ciell, I think the community is okay with it ː a banner was shown last year for a month on account of this event and nobody complained. But if you like I can ask on the village pump today. It is correct that nobody responded to AirSThib's request. Another contributor indicated later on that page that even though it would be the place to request sitenotices, it seemed that few people actually used it for this purpose. Thank you for sending a preview but I could not find the banner on the page you linked to. Although I admit I am glad to have learnt about wikianarchism ǃ Adelaide Calais WMFr (talk) 07:13, 15 May 2020 (UTC)

Central Notice admin comments[edit]

  • Hi! Why do you want to show the banner to anonymous users? Ciell (talk) 21:16, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
Hey Ciell. A few reasons: to incentivize users to register and participate, to show the banner to users who may have an account but are not logged in, and to overall raise awareness about the event (someone may know another editor that might be interested and not have an account, by showing the banner we raise awareness and might increase participation). Chico Venancio (talk) 21:31, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
Hi Chicocvenancio,
I think we all realise how big the effect is of the Central Notice, but we do have to be careful on how we use this. Over usage can lead to banner-blindness. Please consider reaching the users without an account in a different way, for instance targetted SM campaigns, or the media. Ciell (talk) 13:30, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
  • And you mention "other lusophone countries if possible": Wikipedia tells me, there are 9 other countries. You mean all listed in the enwp article? Ciell (talk) 21:51, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
Ciell, yes. I would imagine two different rates (maybe diets as well). One for Brazil with more impact (higher rate and diet, though not necessarily high for the whole period) and one for the other 9 countries. The reasoning behind this is the theme and grantor are Brazilian and we imagine to have more interest by Brazilians on this campaign. The other countries might have some people who are capable and willing to participate so we think it would be ideal to include them as well. But we think that it might not be necessary or a good use of CentralNotice to have the campaign at the same level in both Brazil (where we expect higher interest in the contest and message) and other lusophone countries (where we expect lower interest). Chico Venancio (talk) 01:16, 14 March 2020 (UTC)
Chico Venancio: I tried to set up the notice with the banner you created, but I don't think the outcome is what you would want. Could you check it please? See screenshot of the preview and the preview onwiki. Ciell (talk) 11:13, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
Hey Ciell, I think you copied without clicking on edit source first? See the diff between my version and the template, the most important missing element are <div dir="ltr" id="concursoipiranga"> <div class="ipiranga-logo"></div> <div class="ipiranga-cta"> </div> </div></div> but it would be best to copy the whole thing to make sure nothing is missing. Chico Venancio (talk) 14:47, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
Copying the code in this link is the same as the code in the edit button to that revision on my test page. Chico Venancio (talk) 14:50, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
Sorry Chico Venancio , I CLEARLY hadn't had any coffee yet when I tried that this morning. How's this for you? For me the left image could be a bit more to the left (on my 17' laptop). Ciell (talk) 15:54, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
Hey Ciell, fixing the issue you mentioned got me into several other issues so I redid a bit of the work on the banner. Tested it with several resolutions on Chrome, Firefox and Edge, as well as Chrome and Firefox on android. I think it should look good in all platforms and across screen sizes, being a pretty simple design. Here is the final HTML. Chico Venancio (talk) 22:32, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
That looks way better Chico Venancio: example onwiki. Now, did you check the banner just on your computer, or also on iPad, iPhone and Android? Ciell (talk) 12:12, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
Only Windows and android, I don't have access to iOS devices. But I did try out the Chrome and Firefox mobile device emulation to be as thorough as possible. Chico Venancio (talk) 12:15, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
I turned it on for android and laptop/desktop, logged-in Portuguese users in Brazil. It will show 5 times every 86.400 seconds (day) Ciell (talk) 12:25, 17 March 2020 (UTC)
This would make this banner request to difficult for me to implement. Maybe another admin can do this? Ciell (talk) 13:30, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
Hi Chico Venancio, I switched of the daily banner, and replaced it with a weekly banner. But this one will show in the named ten countries and both anons and logged in. (campaign and the same banner) Ciell (talk) 17:50, 15 April 2020 (UTC)

Discussion[edit]

  • Some additional comments: We do realize that 2+ months is a long campaign, but we hope it is possible if run it with appropriate diets, i.e. not shown too often. Possibility to change wording during the contest (eg. the contest has started → the contest continues → the contest is about to end) would be much appreciated. --AntonProtsiuk (WMUA) (talk) 13:58, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
    • Hi, glad you thought about that, and that can be arranged. Why would you like to have the banner shown to logged in and anonymous users? Is the competition open to non registered users, or do you have metrics about new accounts? Ciell (talk) 21:14, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
@Ciell: The competition is not open to non-registered users, but we've heard anecdotal evidence of people registering because of contest banners; I am not aware of any hard numbers though. It is not essential for us that the banner is shown to anonymous users if you think that would be an issue, but we traditionally ask for that hoping that it would be a factor in increasing participation. --AntonProtsiuk (WMUA) (talk) 12:57, 15 March 2020 (UTC)
      Hi AntonProtsiuk (WMUA),
Yes, I do think we all realise that some people may create an account to join the competition, but with the amount of banners that are shown to anonymous users, we have to be a bit more picky in our choices, I think. So if you wouldn't mind, it would be better to only turn it on for registered, and reach the users without an account with a different method, like SM targetting for instance. and campaign drafted at [6]. I'm not going to enable it now, because there are unanswered concerns at this page. Diets are now set to 20 % of traffic, and 3 impressions per a week. @Ceill: Do you think that's reasonable? --Martin Urbanec (talk) 23:16, 13 March 2020 (UTC)

I switched of the ano's per discussion, and enabled it. Ciell (talk) 11:17, 16 March 2020 (UTC)
  • @Ciell: Hi! Could you please change the wording of the banner at this point? As in this diff. It changes "the contest has started" to "the contest continues". Thanks! --AntonProtsiuk (WMUA) (talk) 21:34, 11 April 2020 (UTC)

Central Notice admin comments[edit]

Hi @Rodelar:,

  • Why would you like to show the campaign to anonymous users? Please see CentralNotice/Usage guidelines;
    • It can encourage new users to participate, or encourage those who, without being logged in, enter Wikipedia. --Rodelar (talk) 12:26, 14 May 2020 (UTC)
      • I see, but the contest is limited to people that have an account. Furthermore, you have no metrics or goals that support the targetting of anons, attracting new users and very little information specific for newbies in the contest landing page. Please consider other ways to attract new users. Ciell (talk) 14:48, 14 May 2020 (UTC)
        • Ok, so only logged users. --Rodelar (talk) 13:09, 15 May 2020 (UTC)
  • Please plan your banner in the calendar, and look for possible conflicting banners;
    • I just added it in the calendar. --Rodelar (talk) 12:26, 14 May 2020 (UTC)
  • Your proposed image has a lot of text, this is suboptimal for a banner. Please choose a different picture, preferably without text.
    • How about I reduce the image to the logo and the main text, without indicating Mayo 2020?. --Rodelar (talk) 12:26, 14 May 2020 (UTC)

Thanks, Ciell (talk) 10:46, 14 May 2020 (UTC)

Thanks @Ciell:. I don´t know if it´s a problem with my browser or other problem, but the banner doesn´t appear. --Rodelar (talk) 07:35, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
@Rodelar: This is really strange, I've asked the other admins to look into this. Just making sure: you were logged in visiting the Spanish Wikipedia, with your language setting set to Spanish, while in Spain? Ciell (talk) 10:32, 18 May 2020 (UTC)
@Rodelar: ? Could you give some more specifics? What device where you using, were you logged in, etc? See questions above. Ciell (talk) 11:45, 19 May 2020 (UTC)
@Quiddity (WMF): are there any other reports of banners not working? Der Hexer has looked at the campaign, but it should be visible. Ciell (talk) 11:45, 19 May 2020 (UTC)
@Ciell: It happened when logged in Spanish Wikipedia, in Spain, for several days. Today I checked it again and is already working. --Rodelar (talk) 14:15, 19 May 2020 (UTC)
