From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
(Redirected from CNR)

Start your request for a CentralNotice banner campaign here!

The aims of this process are as follows:

  • To improve community access to central notice through a clear and transparent process.
  • To improve best practice and ensure greater consistency in campaign implementation.
  • To improve communication around campaigns. Creating clear forums for feedback on campaigns, providing metrics back to campaigns and also a clear method for assessing community consensus for campaigns relating to advocacy.
  • To reduce potential clashes between campaigns

Requests must be made, at minimum, 14 days in advance of any campaign

Step #1 : Review the usage guidelines for CentralNotice
Step #2 : Create your request
Step #3 : Include it on this page.
Step #4 : Add it to the calendar and check for conflicting campaigns in your period for language/geotargeting. Contact the organizers of the other campaigns to solve them!
Step #5 : Notify target projects and geographic affiliates. Add edit diff links to request.
Step #6 : CN Admin & Community feedback [14 days], potential rejection of the request
Advocacy/Payments: WMF Legal Review [21 days])
Step #7 : CN Admin sets up campaign (recommended to allow for up 3 days)
Step #8 : Final approval of the campaign and banner settings by volunteer CN Admin and requester
Step #9 : Campaign enabled by CN Admin

List of currently active volunteer CentralNotice administrators:
Ciell Darafsh DerHexer Johannnes89 Nokib Sarkar Saper Soylacarli Yahya

Note that this banner is to appear only on w:Wikipedia:WikiProject Latino and Hispanic heritage articles, using the new PageAssessments capability of phab:T374761. It will thus be much more narrowly targeted to interested readers, as compared to the earlier effort at CentralNotice/Request/Wiki Loves Fútbol.--Pharos (talk) 16:14, 13 July 2026 (UTC)reply

Servus! Should "Regensburg" fall off the banner as on the preview or shall it fit?  « Saper // talk »  10:30, 2 July 2026 (UTC)reply

I'm not sure what you mean. Nothing falls of the banner in the proposed design in this page for me. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 23:02, 3 July 2026 (UTC)reply
Will try to upload a screenshot once I can. On various systems I am using "Regensburg 2026" is at the bottom of a banner and gets cut off.  « Saper // talk »  23:08, 5 July 2026 (UTC)reply
this is how the "Regensburg" text gets truncated at the bottom. Maybe this is a limitation of the CSS we have here?  « Saper // talk »  00:08, 7 July 2026 (UTC)reply
Alright, but since we cannot copy the wiki markup anyway and have to rebuild the banner in HTML and CSS, it should be fine if it is displayed there correctly. — Am I right in assuming that you want to help out with creating that banner here? I can also handle it, no problem. Best, —DerHexer (Talk) 15:39, 8 July 2026 (UTC)reply

This is a request from the organizers of itWikiCon 2026, specifically from the group in charge of the programme. The programme committee is still finalizing the budget and the overall format of the event, but it has already decided to open a first call for programme submissions by the end of June. Depending on the number and type of submissions received, the committee may decide to launch a second call later, most likely in August. For this reason, they would like the banner to run at the end of June, in order to support the first phase of programme collection and then assess whether a second call will be needed. --Ilario (talk) 17:24, 21 May 2026 (UTC)reply

This is a request from the organizers of itWikiCon 2026, specifically from the group in charge of scholarships. The scholarship call opened on 29 May and will remain open until 19 July 19th June and will remain open until 3rd July. The group would like the banner to be displayed as early as possible, with a first run around 15 June. Based on the number of applications received, they may then request a second banner run if the number of scholarship applications remains insufficient. This is therefore a separate request from the programme call, with a different timeline and planning process. --Ilario (talk) 17:24, 21 May 2026 (UTC)reply

@Ilario For organisational reasons, the period for scholarship applications has been adjusted. This means that the duration of the banner would also need to be adjusted. If possible, please set it to 19 June – 3 July. We apologise for any inconvenience caused. --Dorine Barth (WMCH) (talk) 19:03, 22 May 2026 (UTC)reply

Done as recommended. Thank you, DerHexer. Agbalagba (YWUG) TC 11:24, 4 July 2026 (UTC)reply
  • @Agbalagba: I have created the campaign and banner (preview). However, there are still a few things to do before the campaign can be enabled:
    • Please provide a translation of the banner text into Yoruba as this needed because you also target Yoruba Wikipedia.
    • The landing page should ideally be translated into Yoruba, too. I can understand that marking them for translation might be a bit tricky. Two solutions come to my mind: Create another page in Yoruba that I can link in a banner, or add a summary in Yoruba to your English landing page so that native speakers also understand the process.
    • The logo has a white background that should be transparent. For that reason I changed the background from light grey into white. But that does only work in light mode, not dark mode. A dark mode solution should be found (I prefer the transparent logo, but there are other solutions like a second logo that I could show whenever dark mode is used).

@MDehravan (IWUG): Hi! Sorry, I was looking at the campaign and noticed there was an issue with the dates, so it only ran on August 1. I've already fixed the dates and extended the campaign by one week to make up for the time it wasn't running. Let me know if that works for you. What is the purpose of the campaign? How will you measure the success of the campaign?

[edit]
Description -

Annie Rauwerda is a Wikipedian and comedian who hosts the Depths of Wikipedia social media accounts, as well as the Wikipedia-themed comedy show by the same name. The Depths of Wikipedia show is heading to the Edinburgh Festival Fringe for the month of August. There's also an adjacent rapid grant project to do a public engagement campaign around the show to attract new contributors.

The purpose of this CentralNotice campaign is to give comp ticketes to active editors on English Wikipedia for the Depths of Wikipedia show at 2026 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, as a way to recognize editors for the contributions, and to promote mingling and networking between experienced editors and the general audience. The venue reserves a set number of comp tickets and we have negotiated that up a bit. Depths of Wikipedia has been geeorus with comp tickets for active Wikipedia editors during her tour shows.

Metrics -

  • Total number of editors who sign up for tickets.
  •  Total number of editors who actually show up and claim the tickets.
The current goal is to run the campaign for active editors in the United Kingdom, who can realistically make a trip to Edinburg to see the show (hundreds of thousands do each year).

What banner(s) will you use? What will be your landing page?

[edit]
Banners - Standard banner with Depths of Wikipedia logo. Proposed text: "Join us for the Depths of Wikipedia show at Edinburgh Fringe Festival during August! Complementary tickets for active Wikimedia editors. Sign up online."

Landing Page - WikiHaus/Edinburgh Fringe 2026 Depths of Wikipedia Tickets
[edit]
Type of grant -

This WikiHaus effort is indirectly grant funded, not for the comp tickets to editors, but the public engagment for new editors who attend the show organically is.

Hi @Luxbane: Just two small things. First, could you change the wording of the banner to make it more clearer? Because is not entirely clear of "what happened", I mean I know it I've seen the news but we can't assume everyone will understand that you want to document exactly that. Second, I can't use the second image because it's the logo of an organization outside the Wikimedia movement. Best, --Soylacarli (talk) 17:27, 6 July 2026 (UTC)reply

  1. I see. What about:

Hi all, @Ciell:, @Darafsh:, @DerHexer:, @Johannnes89:, @Nokib Sarkar:, @Saper:, @Soylacarli:, @Yahya:

Could you please adjust the CentralNotice campaign so that it ends on August 16?

Due to the issue with the banner, Brazil has decided to extend the submission period for WLE BR 2026.

I have already updated the dates in the Wiki Loves tool and the participate countries at Commons, but I don't have the permissions to edit the CentralNotice.

I've tried contacting @Romaine:, but they seems to be on a wikibreak, I'm not sure.

I will implement the banner later this week. --Johannnes89 (talk) 15:51, 30 March 2026 (UTC)reply

Campaign [5], banner [6], preview link [7] (should only display a banner while you're in Tübingen and either logged-out or logged-in but less than 50 edits).
@DarkGreenAndSunny there are some issues:
  • The text is way too long (try looking at the banner at a smaller screen...)
    • How about just using the first question?
    • Ideally the second sentence would be shorter as well, e.g. removing "wieder"?
  • While looking at the landing page I noticed that the option to register is only available to logged-in users – as is the second option (Wikimail).
    • How about providing an email address for logged-out users who don't want to register prior to the event?
    • Linking Spezial:E-Mail senden/DarkGreenAndSunny somewhere (currently "per [[Hilfe:Wiki-Mail|Wiki-Mail]] an [[Benutzerin:DarkGreenAndSunny|DarkGreenAndSunny]]") might also be helpful for logged-in users...
Johannnes89 (talk) 11:09, 3 April 2026 (UTC)reply
Thanks for implementing our request!

  • We are working on the e-mail address solution, yes! We are currently having the problem that we ourselves are not able to change the necessary settings of our mailing-list for non-subscribers to be able to contact us. But that was the idea and we're on it.
  • Should we not be able to provide the mailinglist solution, I'll think about your last idea, thanks!

@Johannnes89, we agreed on the new text "Wolltest du schon immer wissen, wie die Wikipedia funktioniert?
Für alle Queers und Frauen kommenden Dienstag in Tübingen: Offenes Treffen", would you please update the displayed text for us? Thanks! DarkGreenAndSunny (talk) 12:59, 14 April 2026 (UTC)reply
DarkGreenAndSunny (talk) 18:47, 14 April 2026 (UTC)reply
Angepasst und Banner aktiviert. Johannnes89 (talk) 15:44, 20 April 2026 (UTC)reply

Noting that CNC suggests an overlap with the monthly invites to CentralNotice/Request/Meeting WP:WWO in Stuttgart 2026 but I've been told that they won't run a banner in April – @Leserättin fyi. --Johannes Richter (WMDE) (talk) 17:44, 24 March 2026 (UTC)reply

That's right. We don't want a banner for the WWO-Meeting in April. So there is no conflict. Best wishes, Leserättin (talk) 18:24, 24 March 2026 (UTC)reply

Thanks for creating the banner @Martin Rulsch (WMDE), the new geo-location script looks very interesting. The banner does not work in dark mode for me, and I notice there's a lot of text in the notice, and would advise (non-binding) to shorten the invitation to join the event. Ciell (talk) 07:56, 27 February 2026 (UTC)reply

Together, we fixed the darkmode. Ciell has approved and enabled the campaign afterwards. Best, Martin Rulsch (WMDE) (talk) 13:17, 27 February 2026 (UTC)reply

Because of low registration numbers, we have added two more federal states and extended the duration of the campaign by three days. Best, Martin Rulsch (WMDE) (talk) 09:20, 5 March 2026 (UTC)reply

April dates and federal states added, banner text slightly changed and geolocation removed. The rest stays the same. Best, Martin Rulsch (WMDE) (talk) 11:16, 17 March 2026 (UTC)reply

First May campaign dates and federal states added, banner text slightly changed. The rest stays the same. Best, Martin Rulsch (WMDE) (talk) 10:15, 14 April 2026 (UTC)reply

Second May campaign dates and federal states added, banner text slightly changed. The rest stays the same. Best, Martin Rulsch (WMDE) (talk) 14:09, 11 May 2026 (UTC)reply
