Igbo Wikimedians User Group/Events/2022 Activities

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

The year 2022 started out on a very good note for the Igbo Wikimedians User Group. The first half the year went well with a lot of accomplishments. This was as a result of the Igbo Wikimedians User Group Simple Annual Grant 2022 which we appreciate the Foundation for. We've been able to explore and go all out without setbacks. This year, we were able to develop two unforeseen collaborations with: Black Lunch Table to host the Black History month. This led to the production of over 5000 articles which can be seen on the dashboard here. Another wonderful [Software Collaboration for Wikidata is with the Wikimedia Deutschland for our Wiki Mentor Africa program which involves a two year funding collaboration to develop the skills of young African developers. In the first to third edition, we've seen interests from an average of 55 developers from Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda etc. We have also been able to improve the User Interface of the Igbo Wikipedia and brought the Igbo Wikipedia to 8,299 articles. Our baby projects in the incubator namely: Igbo Wikiquote has gone from 30 quotes to 2,384 and Igbo Wiktionary from 1,500 to 2,180 with approval to leave the incubator. We have also been to improve the skillsets of our community members through learning webinars etc. This is a documentation of the programs carried out by the Igbo Wikimedians User Group and across its hubs and fan clubs in 2022.

Her Community Commons Training. 9/04/2022[edit]

Everyone's IP addresses was blocked by Fish, a robot I guessed. In fact there was incessant blocking throughout the contest and training, these frustrated contributors by preventing most of them from contributing throughout the training and contest; and the Facilitor during the training -this made the Facilitor to re-train the attendees one on one.

Finally, there were 9 editors, 539 edits and 190 pictures were uploaded on Wiki Commons. The link below leads to the project outreach landing page. https://outreachdashboard.wmflabs.org/courses/Igbo_Wikimedians_User_Group,_Anambra_Hub/Her_Community_Commons_Training

Wikidata edit-a-thon/training on Mapping and increasing Nigerian guesthouses. 13/07/2022 – 20/07/2022[edit]

A Wikidata series of Edit-A-Thon/training carried out to train the participants on how they can contribute to wikidata, Mapping and increasing Nigerian guesthouses on wikidata [1]

The event took place on from Wednesday, 13th july. on zoom. The first session held on 13th july was an introduction to the wiki-community and how to create an account. The second session held on 17th july was on how to create new items (guesthouses) on wikidata. The last session held on 18th july focused on adding properties and references to the items (guesthouses)

The event focused on recruiting new members, introducing and teaching both old and new participants the basics of creating articles on Wikimedia spaces most importantly on wikidata [1] It also focused on rejuvenating the interest of the members to participate at the various levels of the Foundation's Activities, by first getting themselves familiar with in the various projects going on at both the Club Level and Community Level.

At the end of the event, a total of 29 Editors registered for the event on the dashboard, training was also organized on how to create and setup a wikidata account. Over 15 new Editors successfully registered while some had their IP addresses blocked while trying to Sign-up. 200 Items was the targeted task to be carried out. Meanwhile, the participants had successfully created and completed all the 200 items on the red-list and more were added from the research made by the Editors.

As at the time/end of this project being 20th july, 2022. 315 Items were Created; 362 Items Edited with a total of 1.92k Edits were recorded. Comprehensive information can be found on the event dashboard. [3]

The online and in-person event was successful. Participants contributed immensely and were willing to uphold the skills and lessons. Some participants continued contributing even after the event ended. At the end of the sessions, there was a total number of 1,830 revisions; 576 labels were added, 615 descriptions were added, 300 aliases were added as at 7th August 2022, 20:08 (WAT). See event dashboard for more details.

There were a few challenges which we overcame during the event. During the event, it was discovered that some participants were not able to translate Wikidata properties to Igbo language because there was no edit button on their interfaces, probably because they are new users or are not autoconfirmed on Wikidata. Despite the challenge and due to their willingness to contribute, the list of places and continents was generated for new participant to translate but the issue of not being able to edit re-occurred. Finally, the new participants, were able to edit the list of Nigerian states and local government areas (items). Furthermore, the event dashboard was not recording the characters added by participants that edited properties. We relied on using the activity log on the dashboard and user contributions of participants to track edits.

Prizes was awarded to top participants and other participants were also given consolation prizes. The contest was an interesting one because the list of the total number of articles on the mainspace of the Igbo Wikipedia were edited and improved by adding data boxes. The contributions of participants were tracked using xtool and the events dashboard. For comprehensive information see score sheet and event dashboard
