[Wikipedia & Education User Group] Updates: November 2018

[edit source]

Greetings,

Integrating Wikimedia with education is a powerful strategy for the outreach of Wikimedia projects. Realising this concept, a group of leaders promoted this and formed the Wikipedia Education Collaborative. After some time, this evolved to become a user group, officially recognised by the Affiliations Committee in June 2018. The user group had its first board elections earlier in September. In the process to formalise activities and give a shape the user group for long-term sustainability, we are now revamping our processes. Thanks for supporting us during incubation stages, we are now inviting you to formally join the user group by following the instructions on the members' page. Being a member will allow you to be a part of this wonderful collaboration and also do interesting stuff.

Kind regards

Wikisource Pagelist Widget - First Iteration Feedback

[edit source]

Hello everyone,

I am pleased to announce that Wikisource Pagelist Widget is now available on Beta Wikisource. We need your help in testing the widget and providing feedback.

You can test the widget by editing the following Index page on Beta Wikisource:

https://en.wikisource.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/Index:War_and_Peace.djvu

There is a new ‘Preview pagelist’ button under the pagelist field. Click it to get a preview, and then click on any page number in the preview to open the widget.

You can also create a fresh Index Page for any other PDF or DjVu from Wikimedia Commons and test it.

We need your feedback on the following questions:

  • What is your general opinion about the Pagelist Widget?
  • Is it obvious how to use the widget? If not, what is difficult to understand?
  • What other changes would you like to suggest in order to improve the widget further?

Please provide your feedback on the Project Talk Page on Meta-Wiki.

P.S. - The widget doesn’t work on Local Uploads in Beta Wikisource as of now (due to phab:T257807).

Regards

Invitation to participate in Universal Code of Conduct survey - WikiWomen's User Group

[edit source]

(You are receiving this message as you signed your interest to participate as part of the WikiWomen's User Group)

Hello, my name is Mervat Salman, a UCoC Facilitator, Trust and Safety team.

As you know, the WMF Board of Trustees ratified the Universal Code of Conduct early in February. That's the beginning; the policy itself cannot be used if the enforcement pathways are not defined. The implementation and enforcement of the UCoC requires the continuous cooperation to define clear definitions of enforcement pathways and processes. This needs to be done in a way that does not contradict with the internal bylaws and codes of conduct currently in place, but rather to support them and complement their deficiencies, if any.

In this phase of the process, we would like to invite you to share your ideas, thoughts and concerns about the UCoC implementation, reporting and enforcement pathways using this survey:

Notice: This survey will be conducted via a third-party service, which may subject it to additional terms. For more information on privacy and data-handling, see the survey privacy statement <https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/UCoC_Affiliates_Survey_Privacy_Statement>.

Should you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact msalman-ctr@wikimedia.org.

Wiki Loves Butterfly

[edit source]

Dear Ananya, receive my best regards and congratulations for the work being done through the Wiki Loves Butterfly initiative. I am writing from Peru and since 2018 we have been organizing activities such as editing workshops, edit-a-thons, contests, seminars and photo walks in relation to the natural heritage of the Andes through three Rapid Grants. We have created articles about plant and fungi species in Wikipedia in Spanish, as well as uploaded images of them to Commons. This year we are expanding our activities through a Wikimedia project grant that has an ecological focus. As part of the project we are organizing three photo-walks and one 5-day expedition to document plant, insect and fungi species in different locations in Peru. I am researching how to register in images the native species we will encounter and what other bio & ecological information we should document. From these experiences we would like to develop a protocol for species documentation that could help open science wikimedia activities such as the ones we are doing in order to help scientist in research institutions as well as wikipedia readers. I thought that you and your team might have some ideas on this. Best wishes and much thanks, --Cbrescia (talk) 16:20, 16 August 2021 (UTC)Reply

Wiki Loves Butterfly

[edit source]

Hello, I am an active contributor to the Uzbek Wikipedia, and I am interested in organizing a small local edit-a-thon inspired by the Wiki Loves Butterfly initiative. My goal is to improve articles about Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) on the Uzbek Wikipedia, encourage new contributors to participate, and help expand freely available knowledge about these species. Could you please provide me with some recommendations or guidance on how to organize this activity? I would be happy to collaborate with the international team. Abdufattohov Ibrohimjon (talk) 12:54, 8 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Hello Abdufattohov Ibrohimjon,
Thank you so much for your message and for your interest in organizing a local edit-a-thon inspired by Wiki Loves Butterfly. It's wonderful to hear that you're planning to improve Lepidoptera-related articles on the Uzbek Wikipedia while also bringing new contributors into the community.
If possible, it would be great to form a small organizing team with people who are interested in leading the edit-a-thon. Once the team is in place, I'd be happy to host an online workshop where we can get to know each other, identify the topics you'd like to work on, discuss any challenges you anticipate, and develop a practical plan together.
Every community has its own strengths and challenges, so I'm sure we'll also learn from your experiences.
I look forward to working with you and exploring how we can make this a successful international collaboration while strengthening biodiversity knowledge on the Uzbek Wikipedia.
Best regards,
Ananya (User:Atudu)

Hello Ananya,
Thank you very much for your kind response and for your willingness to support this initiative.
I would be happy to join an online workshop and discuss the edit-a-thon. Could you please let me know what date and time would be convenient for you? I will do my best to adjust my schedule accordingly.
I also look forward to forming a small organizing team and working together to make this event successful.
Best regards, Abdufattohov Ibrohimjon (talk) 05:39, 17 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hello Abdufattohov Ibrohimjon,
Thank you for your reply. I'm delighted to hear that you're interested in joining the online workshop and helping organize the edit-a-thon.
Next week I'll be quite busy with Wikimania preparations and events. After 27 July 2026, I'll get in touch with you so we can discuss the online workshop, the edit-a-thon and how to build a small organizing team.
I'm looking forward to working together and supporting this initiative. Atudu (talk) 05:26, 18 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hello Atudu,
I have already created the project page at Wiki Loves Butterfly 2026 on Uzbek Wikipedia. I think we're ready to announce the contest. What do you think?
Also, if you have a list of important butterfly and moth-related articles that are still missing in Uzbek Wikipedia, please send it to me. We can include them in the contest so participants can translate them into Uzbek Wikipedia.
I look forward to your feedback. Thank you! Abdufattohov Ibrohimjon (talk) 09:32, 4 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi Abdufattohov Ibrohimjon,
That's wonderful news—thank you so much for creating the project page on Uzbek Wikipedia. It would be great to start promoting (use site notice and individual talk page) it now so participants have enough time to prepare and contribute. For article suggestions, you can use this list of Indian butterflies (some of they are really stub article!). Most of these butterfly species are still missing from the Uzbek Wikipedia, so they would make excellent translation targets for the contest. You can also use this catalogue:
A systematic catalogue of butterflies of the former Soviet Union (Zootaxa, 2016).It provides a comprehensive checklist of butterfly species and subspecies recorded from the former Soviet Union, including Uzbekistan, along with their taxonomy and distribution. For moths, I need to do a bit more research in the scientific literature before preparing a reliable list. If I find suitable catalogues or journal articles, I'll share them with you. Then we can also prepare a recommended list of moth articles for participants to translate into Uzbek Wikipedia. I hope this will encourage contributors to create a strong foundation of butterfly and moth content in Uzbek Wikipedia.Thank you Atudu (talk) 13:12, 4 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your suggestions and support.
I have added the List of Indian butterflies to the recommended articles section on the project page.
We are planning to start the contest on 10 August 2026 and run it for one month.
I also wanted to ask if you or your team would be able to provide prizes or gift vouchers for the top three participants. I think this would motivate more people to participate and contribute throughout the contest.
Thank you again for all your support. I look forward to your response. Abdufattohov Ibrohimjon (talk) 11:37, 5 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi Abdufattohov Ibrohimjon ,
Thank you for your message. I'm glad to hear that you've added the List of Indian butterflies to the recommended articles section, and it's great to know that the contest will run from 10 August 2026 for one month.
Regarding your request for prizes or gift vouchers, I am very sorry, but unfortunately we are not able to reallocate our project funds for this purpose, as our funding agreement does not allow us to use the budget outside its approved scope.
However, we would be happy to support the contest in another way. We can provide a digital participant certificate for all eligible participants, which we hope will serve as recognition for their contributions.
Thank you again for organizing this initiative and for your enthusiasm. We wish you every success with the contest and look forward to seeing the contributions from the community. Atudu (talk) 13:41, 5 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you very much for your support and your kind response.
That is perfectly fine. I will go ahead and launch the contest on 10 August 2026.
At the end of the contest, I will send you the list of the most active eligible participants. I would appreciate it if you could prepare and provide the digital certificates for them.
Thank you again for supporting this initiative. I look forward to working together.
Best regards. Abdufattohov Ibrohimjon (talk) 11:56, 7 August 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hello Abdufattohov Ibrohimjon, Thank you! Best of luck with the contest—I’m super excited to see it begin on 10 August 2026.
Yes, absolutely! Once you send me the list of the most active eligible participants after the contest, I'll be happy to prepare the digital certificates for them.
Thank you for all the work you're putting into this initiative. Together, we're helping make the world's knowledge richer and more accessible for future generations.
