Simple guide, tutorial or example for wikibase?
I'm trying to find out if mediawiki can be extended with inline named entity annotations. Wikibase sounded like a good option. While I've come across tons of documentation on installation and development, I can't seem to find any documentation on how to actually use it - how to make the annotations and what Wikibase can actually do. I've looked through the showcase page and I still can't find a clear example of what it does.
I've tried semantic mediawiki but the documentation only covers two use cases: adding properties to a page and using templates to visually format them. It's hard to see how properties, which are defined once, can be used to annotate entities within a document, as the entities are referred to multiple times.
Is there an extension that allows one to actually annotate entities in a mediawiki page AND refer to them in the text, so that entities can be unambiguously labeled?
I'd really appreciate any help, even to know if mediawiki is the wrong path for this project.

Autoblock expiry
I have been autoblocked and cannot edit. This is extremely frustrating. I am also unable to send emails to the relevant quarters to redress this issue. Can anybody help resolve this issue. User: aJillani
This should be a not so wide-known issue. I asked a CU, but he does not know the answer. What does exact this means (fom:mw:Autoblock#Automatic reset):
"However, in the case of dynamic IP address pools (such as those used by AOL), this may affect hundreds of users before the block expires. So in the case of an indefinite block, autoblocks may continue to be set by the software, weeks or months after the initial block has been set. Older indefinite blocks, dating from before the autoblock exemption whitelist and the option to disable when blocking, may also trigger autoblocks."?
What I understand is that for 24 hours is being logged every ip used and then blocked also after the 24 hours. If it is true, why only for weeks or months in case of indefinite blocking? How does exactly it work? I ask many sysops. They all believe that there is a complete stop after 24 hours.--Pierpao (talk) 07:03, 2 September 2020 (UTC)
That's what I found
There is an internal autoblock expiry time variable, which is set to 24 hours, meaning that autoblocks only last for 24 hours. However, in the case of dynamic IP pools, this may effect hundreds of users before the block expires. In the case of an indefinate block, autoblocks may continue to be set by the software weeks or months after the initial block has been set. (It is not uncommon to find autoblocks listed on Special:Ipblocklist where the initial indefinate block was issued in 2003 or 2004.)
This is the original text from https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Autoblock&oldid=34110490 dated 2006. I think that this information is outdated. Since you are CU and OS user:MarcoAurelio what do you know about autoblock expiring?--Pierpao (talk) 12:22, 2 September 2020 (UTC)
- Maybe mw:Autoblock has more up-to-date information? In my experience, I have not witnessed autoblocks for weeks or months. I might be wrong though. Autoblock just blocks the underlying IP address for a duration of time, usually 24 hours although that value can be customized. If the user blocked keeps trying to edit, I am not sure if the autoblock of their original IP keeps resetting. Maybe that was the case in the past? Regards. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 19:34, 4 September 2020 (UTC)

Threatened, harassed & bullied by cross-wiki vandals
Hi, there's some history of cross-wiki abuse against me User:Bédévore/Harassment. There's currently another round of cross-wiki abuse, with threats + sexist & sexual comments on my user pages by single-purpose accounts. I reported the abuses on the steward page for global lock... and nothing happened. I know we are all volunteers but I don't understand what's taking so long. Maybe I should report the abuses on another page to get a reaction about it. Please tell me where. Best regards, Bédévore (talk) 13:02, 15 April 2021 (UTC)
What is my block even for?
So I got blocked from editing the English Wikipedia indefinitely, blocked from editing my own talk page, account creation blocked, and IP blocked for 2 days. The message was "Clearly not here to build an encyclopedia: Trolling". I wasn't even given a warning. I acted a little bit weird like 10 minutes before my block, but I made constructive edits (I had around 50 total edits) and wasn't "trolling". Plus, I feel like this is biting the newcomers, except I'm a tiny mouse and the admin is Godzilla. ThatOneRandomGuyYouMeet (talk) 20:04, 25 April 2021 (UTC)
Problems with the WikiVoyage.pt

How can I add and remove them manually? What about stoping the automatic process?2) there is a problem in the interface: when one opens the source code editor, there are some links in the taskbar to add the common templates automatically, but they appear, today, disfigured and it is not possible to understand their functions, can someone help? or where I can get help on this?--Felipe da Fonseca (talk) 23:33, 24 May 2021 (UTC)

Bigoted content on Wikipedias you don’t speak the language of
I know Wikimedia has a general “bigotry sucks and will not be tolerated” mindset. Does that make it okay to remove obviously bigoted content (like this user on Polish Wikipedia has an anti-gay marriage box, a position fundamentally incompatible with Wikimedia’s attempting to promote a friendly atmosphere to LGBT+ Wikimedians) from userpages on Wikipedias you do not participate in and don’t speak the language of (except via auto-translation?) I’m mainly asking because I want to stop abusive use of images with potentially legitimate uses (like Category:Anti-LGBT logos on Commons) Dronebogus (talk) 05:20, 26 December 2021 (UTC)
- There are quite a lot of projects whose coverage on LGBT+ related topics is sparse, homophobic, or both. Optimally these issues would be handled on a local level, but in many cases local admins are the ones perpetuating the development of homophobic content. I recently came across Climate change portal/climate denial review, which is essentially doing a survey of climate change related content on small to medium projects. A similar project focused on LGBT content could be helpful, especially with the new UCOC and related initiatives. Best, Vermont (talk) 23:54, 2 January 2022 (UTC)

ADA standard on Wikipedia
Hi everyone,
As interface administrator on Serbian Wikipedia, I wanted to ask something that has been brought up to my attention on our Wikipedia. Question came up where members are wondering if and when is Wikipedia going to be setting up to follow ADA standards ? From what I was able to find "The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires certain businesses to make accommodations for people with disabilities. Web content should be accessible to blind users, deaf users and those who must navigate by voice, screen readers or other assistive technologies."
Please, advise of what is happening in regards to this matter so I can "report" it to Serbian community.
Thanks !

JairoGaleanoV (talk) 09:39, 16 May 2023 (UTC)

Screenshot of Freifunk IPs blocked from editing wikipedia relevant?
This is part about the complex that the en:wireless community network IP used by de:Freifunk is called by the block forbidding users to edit on any Wikimedia affiliated sites (I tried Wikipedia and mediawiki) an "open proxy". According to https://www.whois.com my previously IP trying to edit on Wikipedia belongs to FreiFunk and not to "Core-Backbone different customers" as whois calls the whole of 81.95.0.0/20. I would like to upload the screenshot of the error forbidding any Freifunk user of editing Wikipedia to Mediawiki and then add that screenshot to at least the German and English article on Freifunk. Is that relevancy enough to upload the screenshot to mediawiki? I used Palemoon on Linux, and there is no Palemoon branding to be seen in the screenshot, so using a free licence for the self-made screenshot should be of no issue. (The screenshot has only one minor edit: it only shows the IP as 81.95.▓▓▓▓▓▓ to obscure my actual IP that I used due to privacy concerns.)
I read about meta:No open proxies, https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/IP_block_exempt and https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Steward_requests/Global#Requests_for_global_(un)block - but first I want to document the issue itself on Wikipedia and mediawiki before I go to meta:Steward_requests/Global# Requests_for_global_(un)block since the block is active at least since 8 February 2021 until at least 8 February 2024.
And my last question, how do I format a link e.g. https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/IP_block_exempt that it works as a valid URL like [[meta:No open proxies]] does as can be seen above? ~~---- Rava77 (talk) 10:09, 27 August 2023 (UTC)
I uploaded the screenshot. For now I try to collect info about the IP addresses that should be green-lit, since I personally cannot move all around Germany to collect all the IP addresses myself. Another Wikipedia and Freifunk user from a different area of Germany confirmed that he also can not edit anything in Wikipedia or any of the sister projects when using Freifunk access. --Rava77 (talk) 17:14, 27 August 2023 (UTC)
Film Links unreadable
Hello, This is driving me insane, it started a few months ago, just 1 or two links would do this, in the last 3 weeks, its all film links, any idea what this is and how fix it?
Thank You in advance![1]https://x.com/Torn_Rose/status/1771341550943162455?s=20 ToRnRose1971 (talk) 01:03, 23 March 2024 (UTC)
- @ToRnRose1971: If it is still driving you insane I suggest asking at w:WP:HD, but explain your X url is a Wikipedia screenshot of the problem. I am on mobile so can't hover to see tool tips to help you. Commander Keane (talk) 04:45, 13 July 2024 (UTC)
Username usurping: Criteria
Is there a general (official or unofficial) criteria for usurping usernames (e.g. amount of edits across all Wikimedia projects, registered for a specific amount of time, etc.) or is it for anyone? WildMouse76 (talk) 00:23, 23 April 2024 (UTC)
- @WildMouse76, I couldn't see any documentation about number of edits, but in the old days there was a limit if the user had lots and lots of edits. Maybe that doesn't matter anymore. Regarding the second part of your question Help:Unified login may help. Commander Keane (talk) 04:56, 13 July 2024 (UTC)
GPS coordinates
Hello! I'm looking for a way to query the Wikimedia database using an API or any other system to retrieve images containing GPS coordinates. Is this possible? And second question: is there a way, when browsing the Wikipedia pages, to display all images of a category including the images from the subcategories? Thank you very much! Ckidon75 (talk) 13:18, 8 May 2024 (UTC)
- @Ckidon75.
- First question: Not 100% sure but w:Template:GeoGroup does something similar, look at its wikicode to see how it grabs the coords. You can see it in action at w:Category:Wikipedia requested photographs in Brisbane. The Commons app does something similar but it may use a regular dump of coordinates, you would need to ask them.
- Second question: I don't think so. See this Commons discussion. Commander Keane (talk) 05:14, 13 July 2024 (UTC)
List needed
I want to monitor the list, which has user names and number of total edits they have done in Tamil Wikipedia. Could anyone please help me to find out this option. I saw this facility last year, but could not remember now. - M. Selvasivagurunathan (talk) 05:49, 8 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Selvasivagurunathan m:
- w:en: Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by number of edits has interwiki links for various languages but I did not see Tamil. You could try asking at w:Wikipedia talk:Database reports for someone to maybe run the report for Tamil Wikipedia. Commander Keane (talk) 04:21, 13 July 2024 (UTC)
VPN
I normally don't use VPN for entering WMF wikis but sometimes I forgot my VPN on and try to edit with it, is that a problem? RuzDD (talk) 09:44, 19 June 2024 (UTC)
- @RuzDD: Given no one has responded here for 23 days I suggest you ask at w:Wikipedia:Village pump (technical), I am sure someone there will know the answer. Commander Keane (talk) 04:24, 13 July 2024 (UTC)

Meta-Page Creation For Event
Creating a meta page for Wiki-Green Conference 2024 has become challenging, The reason is that the tabs for Event:Wiki-Green Conference 2024 is linked to Wiki-Green Conference 2023 and I don't know why. I will be grateful if I get help to solve this pending issue of 2023 activities repeating itself in 2024, so that I can quickly provided the necessary information to various tabs. Thanks Jwale2 (talk) 20:57, 29 June 2024 (UTC)
- @Jwale2: Looking at Template:Wiki-Green Conference 2024 it looks like you have solved this, yes? Or do you require further assistance? Commander Keane (talk) 04:36, 13 July 2024 (UTC)
Close Request for RFC
Hello. I think the consensus is obvious in this RFC (6 people thinks this block is wrong and no one thinks this block is right), so can a steward close it? RuzDD (talk) 08:06, 10 July 2024 (UTC)
- If you want to get the attention of stewards, please use SN instead. The problem is that wikis are generally autonomous so it's unclear what authority they (or the RfC commenters) have to declare the block wrong. * Pppery * it has begun 22:48, 20 July 2024 (UTC)

Indeffed user still indirectly causing trouble
Sorry if this is the wrong place. I'll make it short and concise; basically, there is a user indeffed at the English Wiki. They got indeffed for a variety of reasons, including disruption and lack of competence. Now they have taken their disruption to another Wikipedia, where they have amongst other things started misusing (often non-reliable) sources/mixing it with their own deductions (there is plenty of evidence about that in the English versions), essentially engaging in historical revisionism/negationism, and gotten away with it (not surprising, considering the reputation of that Wiki). Their stuff has already gotten (suspiciously fast by different users) translated to the English Wikipedia several times, so even despite being indeffed they are still indirectly causing trouble. Is this something that Meta-Wiki can help with? Sorry if this is vague, just don't want to make a big deal out of it (yet I guess). HistoryofIran (talk) 00:18, 22 July 2024 (UTC)
