This is a short summary overview of the Source pages on Meta from 28th of May to 4th of June of Cycle 2 discussion. Shortcuts used here rely on the established language and project code and languages are grouped alphabetically. For example, the Arabic language Wikipedia is Ar. This page contains the third summary of source pages since the cycle 2 discussion has started. The first and second summary can be found accordingly in here and here. To provide a rough sense of activities on the projects and platforms the Source pages summarize, the text indicates how many source statements were available and therefore taken into account at the time of writing. Healthy, inclusive communities - A
- On the Bengali community discussion (1s to 6s) participants commented if we follow this theme Wikimedia movement will spread across the continents such as Africa, Middle East, South Asia and Latin America where Wikimedia movement is less recognized. (§BN1) They think this theme is the most important one because healthy, inclusive communities are needed to spread the word of our movement in all languages and cultural communities. (§BN2)
- On the Chinese Community - Individual interviews (1s to 19s) participants said that in order to follow this theme, we have to emphasise on Code of Conduct and Friendly Space Policy in the community, to provide a healthy environment to the volunteers/newcomers (§ZH1) and it is important as it provides the opportunity for the minority to share their knowledge. (§ZH4) They also commented on breaking the language barriers. (§ZH8)
- On the French Wikipedia discussion (40s to 48s) users think this theme is important because this is an important way to achieve our goals of neutrality and expression of the diversity of views. (§FR45)
- On the German Language Wikipedia (20s to 43s) participants commented that the 'Healthy, inclusive communities' would contribute to more authors becoming involved in Wikipedia. (§DE24) Users agreed that this is strategically the crucial theme (§DE25) though they fear that it's not the present reality. (§DE22) They also suggested that everybody should be more friendly to each other. (§DE28)
- On the Wikipedia Community Schools Association Greece (1s to 12s) participants commented that if we follow this theme more women will be involved, (§GR2) and our wikis will set the standards for modern (net) workplace behavior. (§GR5)
- On the Italian Wikipedia (65s to 89s), regarding theme A, participants said that We need reader's feedback.(§IT69) Regarding outreach programs we should also look for results in terms of quality. (§IT70) Users also commented on personal attacks while discussing this theme. (§IT75) (§IT77)
- On Meta wiki (68s to 72s), participants commented that thematic WikiProject could attract more people to contributing, that's why they should be resurrected (§Meta68) and with sufficient editor participation and translators, we could know better what's happening on various wikis.(§Meta70)
- On the Polish Wikipedia (16s - 23s) participants commented that we need a dedicated project to clarify the language we used to communicate oniki as it is big barrier for newbies, (§PL20) problems such as gender gap needs support of professional experts in sociology and volunteer management and it is a role for WMF. (§PL21) Linked Open Data is our potential ally in recognition of gender (and others) gaps in content (§PL22) and they also suggested an ombudsman for newbie editors. (§PL23)
- On the Wikimedia Polska 2017 meeting (1s to 18s) participants mostly focused on why the number of editors is not growing (§PL1) and they discussed it and found that it is because of technical obstacles, (§PL3) unfriendly community (§PL4) (§PL5) and completeness of the content. (§PL2) They also discussed that a technical or social methods should be created to give newbie users an initiation time during which they would be protected from toxic users' actions. (§PL10)
- On the Portuguese Wikipedia Village Pump (1s to 32s) participants commented that bettering the community will allow more projects and people to contribute and thrive (§PT3) and this theme is the base for all others. (§PT4) They also suggested that the role of WMF should be rethought in some circumstances (§PT7) and an inclusive process requires a reorganization and simplification of the help pages. (§PT9) Knowledge bias is harassment as it limits the contribution of the marginalized (§PT10) and a key dimension is to be able to bring diversity and build bridges to empower the chronically marginalized. (§PT11)
- On the Russian Wikipedia (1s - 31s) participants commented that we should abandon from wiki globalization and idea of impacting the world (§RS4) and attract institutions to publish articles on science topics. (§RS5) Users also suggested, We need to give special attention to accessibility of Wikipedia, (§RS23) treat newcomers and the content created by them more carefully (§RS24)
- On the Wikidata discussion (44s to 50s) one user thinks that this theme is the second most important part of strategy.(§DATA49)
The augmented age - B
- On the Bengali community discussion (1s to 6s) participants commented, To ensure the quality of our contents technological improvement is unavoidable. If we don't keep up with the world in terms of technology we will be left behind. (§BN6)
- On the Chinese Community - Individual interviews (1s to 19s) participants said that technology helps the work be done in a more easy way (§ZH17) and WMF should spend more time and money for the AI development. (§ZH18)
- On the English Wikipedia discussion (86s to 98s) participants suggested that we should focus on developing smart tool to assist users instead of focusing AIs (§EN88) because, without a massive increase in tools, Wikipedia articles will descend into a morass of out-of-date information citing deadlinks.(§EN89) They also suggested to approach more transparent (and smaller) companies or non-profits who would not seek to harm the project. (§EN90)
- On the French Wikipedia discussion (40s to 48s) participants suggested that this the most important theme especially regarding our goals in terms of extension of users, contributors or simple readers. (§FR41) (§FR42) We should partner with applications designers and developpers. (§FR43)
- On the German Language Wikipedia (20s to 43s) while one user commented this theme is essential for Wikipedia (§DE43) others focused on artificial intelligence (§DE30) - (§DE33) and translation tool. (§DE34) They also said that this theme forms the basis of expanding Wikipedia more quickly and improving the distribution of knowledge. (§DE35)
- On the Italian Wikipedia (65s to 89s) participants commented that old users often do not welcome technological innovation (§IT88) and we need to explain technological innovation also to users. (§IT89) In particular, users also commented on AI improvements on Wikisource and other projects. (§IT81) (§IT84) (§IT85)
- On the Polish Wikipedia (16s - 23s) participants talked about shorter time strategies in terms of technology rather than 15 years (§PL18) and focusing on real issues such as anti-vandal tools. (§PL19)
- On the Portuguese Wikipedia Village Pump (1s to 32s) participants commented that technological processes determines the way content production organizes itself. (§PT16)
- On the Russian Wikipedia (1s - 31s) participants talked about 3D modelers, visual engineers, VR developers. (§RS7) They said that this theme is the top priority (§RS20) because we need to abandon old encyclopedic format (§RS8). We also need to turn attention to automatic creation of spoken articles (§RS22) and the progress in translation automatisation will allow us to turn Wikipedia into one global universal encyclopedia. (§RS31)
- On the Spanish Wikipedia (31s to 46s) participants commented that this theme is important (§ES46) and accessibility should be an element to be considered permanently in Wikipedia's technological development, both in its reading and editing phase. (§ES33) On the Spanish -speaking community - Telegram group (25s to 61s) participants discussed about adapting to technological context (§ES24) (§ES25) (§ES26) and accessibility of our contents (§ES27) (§ES29) (§ES30) (§ES31) They also think that social media use is vital to attract new people (§ES33) and ORES is the future regarding the vandalism detection and also other metrics related to the articles quality. (§ES43) They also talked about anonymity. (§ES44) - (§ES48)
- On the Vietnamese Wikipedia (13s - 19s) discussion participants suggested that we can learn from Facebook/other social websites to inscrease our interaction and comments in Wikimedia sites (§VI18) and may try to integrate Google Translate to Content Translation to quickly translate Wikipedia across languages. (§VI19)
- During Wikimedia Hackathon (1s to 11s) participants discussed it is also important that people should all see the same version at Wikipedia, and be able to use the same tools. (§wmhack3) They also suggested that Wikimedia has to give the interfaces to augmented data. (§wmhack1)
A truly global movement - C
- On the Chinese Community - Individual interviews (1s to 19s) participants said that including the minority can bring us new knowledge. (§ZH15)
- On the English Wikipedia discussion (86s to 98s) one participant thinks that this theme is the most important themes of all because it is the best way to cover more articles from around the world.(§EN91)
- On the German Language Wikipedia (20s to 43s) participants focused on Wikimedia Commons and the Content Translation Tool. They suggested that Commons should provide a better support for photographers (§DE38) and an improved Content Translation Tool would improve the communication between the different languages of the world.(§DE39)
- On the Portuguese Wikipedia Village Pump (1s to 32s) participants commented that by establishing a truly global movement we may establish a social globally connected society (§PT19) and the movements globalization process should be accompanied by deep institutionalization of democracy. (§PT22)
- On the Spanish -speaking community - Telegram group (25s to 61s) participants commented that all the voices are represented in articles. (§ES49) The most paradigmatic case is the gender gap. (§ES55) To achieve this theme, dialogues with both other social movements and international organizations must be expanded to distribute funds for projects that take effective action to change the situation. (§ES58) One user said (s)he also consider as a priority to create a program of equity promotion in the Wikimedia movement. (§ES61)
The most trusted source of knowledge - D
- On the Bengali community discussion (1s to 6s) participants commented if we follow this theme Wikimedia will be the simplest and the most trusted source of knowledge. (§BN4)
- On the English Wikipedia discussion (86s to 98s) participants commented on this theme think that our challenge is to maintain the status of trusted source of knowledge rather than achieving it.(§EN91) Users who answered question 3 suggested that restriction on article creation through anonymous Ips (§EN94) and restrict editing of higher quality articles to higher certified users while allowing lower certified users to work on lower quality articles is a way to increase credibility. (§EN95)
- On the German Language Wikipedia (20s to 43s) one participant thinks that this theme is the most important. (§DE39) They also commented that we will help people understand how our processes make us reliable“ the Wikimedia projects will stand a realistic chance to become the „most relevant source of knowledge“ beyond all scientific literature and respectable press by 2030. (§DE40)
- On the Hebrew Wikipedia village pump (15s - 23s) participants think that this is the most important issue. (§HE16) They also suggested that we need to add a control mechanism to each article that will bring the sources of information to the article (§HE19) and collaborate with Wikipedia scholar. (§HE20)
- On the Polish Wikipedia (16s - 23s) One user commented on theme D thinks that WMF should rather focus on technology and support of existing community rather than engaging too much effort to this theme (§PL16) though another user disagreed. (§PL17)
- On the Wikimedia Polska 2017 meeting (1s to 18s) participants commented that at the current state of contributors' communities of Wikimedia projects it is hard to engage experts due to egalitarian methods of decision making. (§PL11) Expert's role might play a role of external advisors or reviewers (§PL12) and they can be attracted by doing common projects with their mother institutions. (§PL13)
- On the Spanish Wikipedia (31s to 46s) one user thinks that the best way to combat poor perceptions about our projects in other media is to admit that we have reliability issues and make it more reliable. (§ES35) Users also said that this theme is not necessarily an alternative to the others but goes hand in hand with some of them (§ES38) and if we follow this theme we would have a great impact, by becoming the world leaders in reliable information. (§ES39)
- On the Wikidata discussion (44s to 50s) one participant said that being a respected and reliable source of knowledge should be the most important theme. Without this one, the other four are of no use. (§DATA50)
- During Wikimedia Hackathon (1s to 11s) participants commented that this theme the most important one because it directly impacts millions of readers every month (§wmhack10) and to make it stronger, we need need more research data on why people use other sources so that we can improve where possible. (§wmhack2)
Engaging in the knowledge ecosystem - E
- On the Bengali community discussion (1s to 6s) participants commented if we can ensure quality and trustworthiness we could also be able to bring researchers and experts into our readers' ecosystem. That will eventually help us create a better ecosystem of knowledge. (§BN5)
- On the English Wikipedia discussion (86s to 98s) participants suggested that Wikipedia does not operate in a way academics understand. (§EN97)
- On the French Wikipedia discussion (40s to 48s) users said that engaging in the knowledge ecosystem need more outreach, a better understanding of academic, journalistic, etc., better recruitment (§FR47) and they also fear that Wikipedia can not substitute for a higher university education. (§FR46)
- On the Hebrew Wikipedia village pump (15s - 23s) discussion suggested that it is important that we nurture people who can interact with the knowledge system (§HE22) and one user in favor of joining colleges, universities, high schools and even divisions to promote Wikipedia. (§HE23)
- On the Italian Wikipedia (65s to 89s) participants commented on this theme stressed on GLAM partnerships. (§IT65) (§IT79)
- On the Wikimedia Polska 2017 meeting (1s to 18s) participants commented that theme D goals must be achieved first then we might think about theme E (§PL17) however they recognize Wikimedia's content can be used as a good example how to recognize good knowledge from fake information by analysing the quality of sources. (§PL18)
- On the Portuguese Wikipedia Village Pump (1s to 32s) participants commented that this theme is the one with the most potential to impact the world, with a change in education (§PT26) However they also fear that without a welcoming environment and clearer processes and documentation we will not create the contagion effect necessary for this theme to develop at the needed pace. (§PT26) They also suggested instead of focusing on attracting students we should focus on attracting teachers. (§PT29)
- On the Spanish Wikipedia (31s to 46s) participants said that like the French encyclopedia, Wikipedia should be ambitious and to become an icon of the 21st century. (§ES44)
- On the Vietnamese Wikipedia (13s - 19s) participants commented that if we follow this theme we make everyone in the world to be an active learner and a curious researcher. (§VI13) They also suggested we can coordinate with universities and education institutions to improve some specific articles as student assignments. (§VI17)
- During Wikimedia Hackathon (1s to 11s) participants commented that if we follow this theme we could have a cultural influence, a political influence, and a didactic influence, just by being a neutral source of information. (§wmhack6)
