Re:Lmbuga[edit]

Gracias Savh.

No need to suppress log entries from users list[edit]

Hello! Can you please undelete the log entry that you have suppressed on the Finnish Wikiquote? There is no need to delete the log entry, only the user name. When you delete only the user name, it won't show on the log but the log entry will not be unnecessarily hidden from ordinary users. Not many people are fully aware how the RevDel interface really works. --Pxos (talk) 13:43, 20 May 2014 (UTC)

An example: it now reads

13:06, 20 May 2014 (username removed) (log action removed)

When you delete only the username, it will read:

13:06, 20 May 2014 User account (username removed) was created ---.

This may seem trivial but stewards who perform global suppressing actions that hide information from local administrators should be very careful with the tool. --Pxos (talk) 14:00, 20 May 2014 (UTC)

Any thoughts on this yet? It is rare that stewards come to local projects, make themselves oversighters and suppress log entries when normal revision deletion (visible to administrators) would suffice in my opinion. Now you have suppressed too much information and it cannot be reversed by anyone. I see that you are a relatively new steward. Parhaps I should ask more seasoned people to look into this? --Pxos (talk) 12:55, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
Sorry I did not respond earlier, I thought I had. The user name was abusive and was supressed from CentralAuth according to policy, and the edit summary of my revert was also supressed, considering it also contained this user name. There is no possibility to suppress only the user name, without supressing the full log entry, it just is not technically possible. I have plenty of experience using the revision delete extension on a fairly large wiki, and still consider the suppresion to have been performed correctly, considering there are no local users with the oversight right. You're free to contact another steward about this, but whatever your opinion is of what has to be supressed and what not, while you haven't seen the supressed content, is probably of very little relevance, considering this has been suppresed in accordance with the global policy. Savhñ 13:52, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
Of course it is possible. I have done revision deletion on fi-wiki, and there are no problems. I have even written the instructions how to do it. When you delete the user name only, the whole log entry will not be deleted. Aren't you using the same tools (RevDel) as the administrators? --Pxos (talk) 14:00, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
My opinion may be irrelevant thank you very much, but unless I am convinced somehow that suppressing information with RevDel is somehow different than just deleting it with sysop tools, I think that it is possible to only delete the user name. Or is the tool different? --Pxos (talk) 14:03, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
Here is a link: [1]. --Pxos (talk) 14:06, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
RevDel and Oversight is not the same, the main point being of OS that it is also hidden from admins. However, this case in particular was a CentralAuth suppression, this being the only way to fully globally suppress a global account. As I said before, I don't care whether you have written a guide about it on your wiki, I have been an admin on eswiki for over three years and know perfectly well how to revdel logged actions, though I might not be somebody that enjoys pointing out mistakes as much as you seem to do, but I appreciate your interest in collaborating to unhide a single log action that simply can't be unhidden individually. It being a separate extension (CentralAuth vs. RevDel) it is simply not possible to not suppress the whole log, or does your guide also take that into consideration? Maybe your local guide also states how something can be locally unhidden if there is not even a local log available. I honestly do not understand why you complain about this, and even though I personally feel you're wasting your time, feel free to ask anybody else for confirmation of what I am saying, since indeed, I am a rather new steward. I would, however, appreciate an explanation why you think I'm lying when explaining this, as you seem to imply by saying "Of course it is possible". Cordially, Savhñ 14:26, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
You are not being very friendly but I can see that may be my style of writing was not the best possible. I am sorry. But there is no need to dismiss me as a petty pedantic idiot who loves to point out others' mistakes. I have not said that you are a liar, I have said that I can delete a log entry by using admin tools. Your reply is not cordial even if you think it so. There is simply no need to hide more information that is necessary. I will read again what you have written and will try to understand the point. I would appreciate a different attitude from a steward. --Pxos (talk) 14:33, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
Well, it indeed comes over quite that way, considering you're pointing me to an error with a toolset to which you don't have access, on a log which you can't see ruled by a policy you don't even seem aware of, while being dismissed as incapable because only being a new steward, but you're right that this should not have been noticeable in my reply. I am sorry for this, and I encourage you to check with other stewards the correctness of my actions. Savhñ 14:39, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
I have now been provided with an answer, which is the whole point of asking questions, isn't it? Since I do not have access to the tools, or to the perfect knowledge that stewards have, it seems only reasonable to ask them for explanation. I have now received an explanation with some bonus points about my personality and character, which may very well be correct for that matter. However, I believe that the more power you have, the more careful you should act among the peasants and those that are beneath you. Thanks for the explanation about the shortcomings of the CentralAuth suppression tool. I did not know that you had used that when I only saw that you had given yourself the OS bit on the project. --Pxos (talk) 14:57, 22 May 2014 (UTC) Wry attempts at humour are removed. --Pxos (talk) 19:58, 23 May 2014 (UTC)
And my reason is not to point out mistakes as such as you may or may not understand. The fact that stewards appear in local projects and come across as perfect gods that can make no mistakes, is not a happy thought. I hope you can appreciate that as well. --Pxos (talk) 15:02, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
Furthermore, I do not accept your view that one cannot point out mistakes if one is not steward himself as you seem to say. I feel that I have been told off by a superior being, which may or may not be the case. But thanks anyway. --Pxos (talk) 15:23, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
Can you point me to the policy page of CentralAuth or to something where more information can be obtained. I usually like to learn new things and then write about them to others e.g. by editing a local guide so that people could understand better what is happening. Now it seems that the CentralAuth suppression needs to be explained for idiots who like to waste their time trying to understand things. --Pxos (talk) 15:57, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
I do not consider you a peasant, nor myself a landlord, nor above anybody else. The OS flag was related to a different edit by that same user, where the revision also applied for suppression, considering the libelous content. I did not use the OS flag on the account creation log, nor could I modify anything on that supression by CentralAuth. You asked me to undelete it, despite not knowing what it was nor if it was possible, and now say I am like a god because I globally supressed an account and suppressed various of his edits on different projects. I am far from perfect, have a busy real life, am a volunteer, and today might not have been my best day. You are free to point out mistakes, but I would have preferred a more polite wording saying for instance that you think it could have been done differently. Bluntly asking me to unhide something, without even asking for a reason and not knowing what it contained, does not incentivate me to respond to a question you did not ask. Savhñ 16:59, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
Ok. Let's leave this at that, shall we? I think that we both have been impolite but your answers have been very thorough and informative. I'll certainly appreciate them when I read them in a calm state of mind. I think we have both suffered from a bad day or week, at least I have. --Pxos (talk) 21:35, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
Hi, I've just noticed this, and examined Savh's global suppression of the username. It was done within policy. Furthermore, Pxos, I'm perplexed by the reasoning for this post. Was it really worth the big fuss over the unhiding of the words "was created automatically" in the log entry? I don't think so myself. Savh did not explicitly hide it, rather suppressing the username via the CentralAuth extension which did that automatically. He could look through the hundreds of entries in the log to unhide the part of it, but that would be utterly unnecessary, since no new information would be present. Basically I don't understand what the big deal is.
I don't think it's a bad thing to question the actions of stewards, but when it is over something so very trivial? Perhaps reserve such questioning for more pressing issues. Ajraddatz (talk) 21:45, 22 May 2014 (UTC)
Well thanks are extended to you too. The matter is now solved and I was in the wrong, which has been made very clear to me now. I am just not going to apologize any further for asking these kind of questions. What was the reasoning? Do not hide anything that does not need to be hidden. I thought I made my point across but you guys just do not seem to understand the principles behind my reasoning. --Pxos (talk) 22:16, 22 May 2014 (UTC)

Letter petitioning WMF to reverse recent decitions[edit]

The Wikimedia Foundation recently created a new feature, "superprotect" status. The purpose is to prevent pages from being edited by elected administrators -- but permitting WMF staff to edit them. It has been put to use in only one case: to protect the deployment of the Media Viewer software on German Wikipedia, in defiance of a clear decision of that community to disable the feature by default, unless users decide to enable it.

If you oppose these actions, please add your name to this letter. If you know non-Wikimedians who support our vision for the free sharing of knowledge, and would like to add their names to the list, please ask them to sign an identical version of the letter on change.org.

I'm notifying you because you participated in one of several relevant discussions. -Pete F (talk) 22:19, 20 August 2014 (UTC)

Q about usurp on dewiki[edit]

hello,
Thank you for usupr mu account on wikisource and pl wiki.
I asked a question on the Steward requests/Username changes/2014-09#Zdzislaw@multiple projects 2, but it has already been archived. Could you check if it is possible to usurp Zdzisalw account on de wiki? Regards Zdzislaw (talk) 12:08, 22 September 2014 (UTC)

I have seen your comment - apologies for not replying, much to do - but unfortunately, without any global usurpation policy and since the user has contributed to de.wiki, I don't know how to proceed. However, with SUL finalisation, this should be solved automatically and in line with the WMF policy. Unless you really want to access dewiki with this account, I'd suggest you wait for SUL finalisation to happen. Savhñ 00:01, 23 September 2014 (UTC)

Caso E4024[edit]

Saludos. --Fixertool (talk) 12:51, 24 November 2014 (UTC)

About Changing username[edit]

Hi! Thanks for your reply to my request. I am currently blocked on zhwp but I think the block is illegitimate. I was accused of abusing sockpuppets, which I have never tried to. Several years ago I was accused if the same behavior, even when the CU results showed that one of the socalled sockpuppets are not mine, and others could not not be proved. Later I was unblocked. But last year the same admin who preform the first block blocked me again. I was then using a public network, the only edits I made were to request to remove my own tag of autopatrolling, and that right was not even applied for by myself.

I have totally lost my confidence with zhwp. When I tried to appeal for unblock, it took the admins more than 3 months to answer!!! And if not another user who called in question, they may never even give me an answer! And their answer was only to show their correctness. Although I was blocked on zhwp, I can still make edits to other projects. That's the reason why I request for a username change, I will not use the new name to seek any unblock on zhwp, as I said on my zhwp talk, the June 2013 appeal is my final appeal. I hope you can consider it again. Regards--Haaqfun (talk) 01:53, 25 November 2014 (UTC)

Sorry I took so long to reply, it unfortunately slipped my mind, Haaqfun. However, I still stand by the original refusal to rename your account, considering the global effect of a rename. A rename is a favour done to users in good standing in their respective communities, which you don't seem to be on zh.wiki. In the end, a name is just a name, and for transparency purposes regarding the zh.wiki community, I'd rather have you kept using the same one.
Regarding your zh.wiki issues, I am confident that you could appeal if the block is unjustified. Zh.wiki has a large number of admins, and they have no reason to wish you blocked. Savhñ 22:48, 16 December 2014 (UTC)
