[edit]Hi Spacebirdy. Thanks for creating the nds-nl logo. I was just wondering how I could alter the Wikipedia logo myself next time, which font/style do I use for Wikipedia and for the text "The Free Encyclopedia"? Thanks in advance. Servien 21:39, 30 December 2008 (UTC)
MountainBlueAllah
[edit]Hi Spacebirdy.
Please unblock User:MountainBlueAllah. This user has been blocked for political and personal reasons. System operator VasilievVV block this account to make good his friend Roman Bekker, no for real abuse (blocked after 8 months since the last changes of this user). This is unacceptable in a Wikimedia Foundation projects. --213.248.56.189 21:40, 31 December 2008 (UTC)
- He can make an unblock request on his usertalk, thanks, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 02:08, 1 January 2009 (UTC)
- MountainBlueAllah has no edited Meta eight months. VasilievVV is bad user/sysop, has many violations in ru.wiki (enabled FlaggedRevs without consensus in community, hack Kalan's voting script, violations of NPA in comments to Serebr's block), he demonstrated the inadequate decisions. This block is very incorrect. --213.248.56.189 13:20, 9 January 2009 (UTC)
- Hello, as said, he can make a formal unblock request on his user talk, then more than one sysops can review the block, having looked at his (deleted) user page makes me not disagree with this block at the moment, but he can still put a request and then we will see, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 14:37, 9 January 2009 (UTC)

Rfa
[edit]Hi birdy,
I need some advice and I hope you can help. I have a rfa on simple.Wikibooks, four people voted support. Is that enough for a permanent adminschip? Its a very small communety and I don't think a lot of people are active and will vote. Abigor talk 22:46, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
- What is the normal time for a temp adminship? Half year, one year? I don't have a problem if it will be a temp adminship, I came there because there was a lot of maintance and vandalism. When it grows big enough I will move on to the next wiki that needs help :) Abigor talk 22:58, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
- Okey, thanks for your answers. I will place the reqeust in about three days on meta. Abigor talk 23:11, 16 January 2009 (UTC)
Thank for forgot
[edit]I do not vandal edits to January 4, nowhere, as I understood that it is time rectified - I am by nature not vandal (I had 11 thousand useful edits and almost one year experience). In my own project very much active users leave the project, I was in a three wikimeetings, and the project need for me as active and progressive user. In other projects, I also do not do vandalism at this time. But remember that in Russian Wikipedia is the so-called "serial offenders" (ru:Википедия:Вандалы#Серийные нарушители), which, in particular, can I substitute. Then keep in mind that this is not me. For example, this situation has been. In the Bulgarian Wikipedia, I do not vandal edits, even anonymously. The accont "Канопус Киля" was greate by vandal from Samara, Russia. In my native project, I have above 300 vandal accounts, but that in the past. I was all ready to forgive. Thank you, that does not obidelis with me for damage to personal pages and the like.
I do not need help, after 2 weeks, I will write a claim to the Arbitration Committee in Russian Wikipedia, I think it unlocks. But would like to convey that I'm not Goth now. Thanks. Nikolay Andreevich, 17 years old (Canopus). 92.113.240.22 09:51, 17 January 2009 (UTC)
- Привет, Канопус, thanks for Your message here and on my talkpage on ru.wiki, I am hoping You mean it and stop Your past behaviour, as said in my answer on ru.wiki, if there is a signal from the ru.wiki community/arbcom&checkusers that they see a change and no more reports from other wikis such as fr.wiki, meta etc. they can approach SRG and ask for an unlock and under these conditions I might even support that.

Patience, empathy and trust should be steward qualities
[edit]Hi, Spacebirdy, i did what you asked me but i would like to remind you that as a steward you should has patience, trust contributors, and not to press them to do as soon as possible what you would like they do. Yesterday was quite late and i was a bit upset about this no-confirmation as a bureaucrat on wo-wiki. So, i wrote a last long message and went to sleep, and decided to change my signature this morning. So can you understand that sometimes other people are not going to do immediatly what you want. Moreover, you should be positive and keep in mind that most of people here are reasonnable and good-faith, especially when you are a steward. I'm sorry to tell you that : "you first message on my talk page was right, but you second message was too much". Note : this has nothing personal, just as a sysop i have to deal with people, and i always try to keep cold blood, patience, and believing in their good-faith. I think it should be the same for a steward function, isn't it? Best regards. Guérin Nicolas 11:56, 17 January 2009 (UTC)
- Hello Guérin Nicolas, please assume good faith Yourself and don't interpret impatience into my messages, when I ask You something politely. I have answered You there, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 14:44, 17 January 2009 (UTC)
- I read your first message yesterday but my priority was to leave an answer on the permission page for stewards (as explained above), to change my signature could wait the night... I didn't see that in your second message a lack of politness, but a lack of patience. Please, consider that confirmed contributors, as we are, have good-faith, and if they don't do one thing immediatly, it might be because they have no time or because they have more important things to do before. Please, wait in such case couple of hours, and assume that good contributors understand really what is good for the projects and will not go against. Just once again, as i read your second message, i felt some impatience and irritation from you that were not justified. Best regards. Guérin Nicolas 15:06, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

[edit]Hola Spacebirdy.
Espero no causarte muchas molestias.

- Danke fuer Dein Verstaendnis, lG., --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 22:16, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

A question
[edit]I have another question. What do you think about this issue. If I go for filing an RfC about Mardetanha's sysop-power abuse in Persian Wikipedia, do you (and other stewards) consider it as some sort of campaign? If that's the case, I prefer to wait until after the steward election. Alefbe 18:54, 2 February 2009 (UTC)
- You can start a RfC whenever You think it is appropriate, but note that one should have evidence of abuse when making accusations, also I would recommend to sort it out locally first or to start the first try there, if that fails a RfC could be opened. [edit]Hello Space, thank you for your words (and for the capital "You", that I don't really deserve).
I don't think that a continous activity must be asked to anyone (we're all volounteers, if I well remember), but I realized that my rather long inactivity made it difficult for me to keep at pace with all the changes that occurred in the stewards' tasks from the technical point of view - simple things like where to look for the stuff to be done and how to do it. That's why I acknowledged the critic position of the other users.
I took a couple of steps back from the Wikiworld because of real-life things, but I'll be somehow around. Bye. --Paginazero - Ø 12:04, 3 February 2009 (UTC)
Double Standard? (Thogo and Shizhao)
[edit]Spacebirdy, Would you please explain why you weren't having double standard when you supported Thogo when he has used his steward tools and oversight tools on his home wiki and then voiced strongly against Shizhao on his use of stewards tools on his home wiki? Hillgentleman 03:45, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- Hello Hillgentleman, please read it again, he did not use oversight on his home wiki, thanks, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 03:53, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- I really don't understand what part of this is so hard to read... --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 03:55, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- I really don't understand why you excused Thogo and in the same time accused Shizhao for exactly the same thing - "using his steward tool in his home wiki". Hillgentleman 04:01, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- He did not used the tool, can't You understand this? --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 04:02, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- This is a game of definitions. He used his steward priviledge on his home wiki. That's against the rules. Thanks.Hillgentleman 04:05, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- No it is not, because he was asked to, and he did not use the tool. But obviously it is sensless what I say. The log access is now enabled anywhere and if we had that global thing in the past he would have had it too. Thanks, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 04:09, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- Besides, there is a big difference in checking private data of users or having a look at the log. I think oversight is even something that could be done on the home wiki without having a coi, but that is something different and (repeating because might as well not be understood then) he did not use oversight there. Thanks, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 04:11, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- Hello spacebirdy, Don't forget that need the oversight tool in order to accesss the log. Hillgentleman 03:59, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- No, there is a difference between looking at the log and using the tool, and if You would have read on, You would have read, that now every steward has log access at every time, I don't see a coi in that. And if You would please stop hunting me for expressing my serious concerns about these zh.wiki checks, it was not me who did checks at his home wiki, which is against the rules, thanks, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 04:02, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- I understand Your points completely. And (since You might not have seen it yet) even if it doesn't involve pressing certain buttons, reading the log is one of the steward priviledges. And of course Thogo could and should have gone on irc to ask someone else to do it for him to avoid coi - exactly what You and Thogo have asked Shizhao to. But that is a completely different matter. Have a good day. Hillgentleman 04:21, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- No, I do not see a coi here, as said, because Shizaho looked at private data of users of zh.wiki, Thogo did not, and calling me using double standards is quite offensive, because I do not. Or did You see me asking for Jusjih removal, because he sysopped himself many times on wikis with active sysops just to look at the deletion log for deleted images for his work on commons? - No, because it is now a global right anyway, so that is something he is doing now without having to change his userrights for it. Though people could hold that against him.
- The next thing is, this is about a different userright even, You can't compare these two, Shizhao did use a tool, Thogo did not, Shizaho did checkusers, Thogo looked at the os log, which he can now do on any wiki, de, en, whereever.
- And I have nothing personal against Shizaho, but it looks like You are suggesting this here to me, apparently this confirmation system is really the worst thing I have ever seen, since people are not even allowed to express their concerns freely without getting insulted, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 04:31, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- First, calm down. I am sorry if I gave you impressions otherwise ,but:
- "Double standard" is a description of certain behaviours or persons and it is not an insult.
- I have never called You double standard. It appeared to me that Your standards in Thogo's case and Shizhao's do not match up. That is why I asked You personally. As I said, I understand Your points completely. And, really, have a good day! :-) Hillgentleman 04:48, 4 February 2009 (UTC)
- Sorry, that is a missunderstanding, because I am quite calm. A description of a certain behaviour can be offensive and "double standard" which translates to 'Doppelmoral' in my language I did take as offense, because I do really try to be fair to everyone and evaluate peoples actions only. But if this was not meant to be, fine with me. For others that might not match, because as I only expressed my opinion there (I tried to explain it as well as I could), someone else might see it different, but they can express their opinion as well. Have a good day too, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 04:57, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Pluim
[edit]Hallo Spacebirdy,
We have a very strange habit on nl-wiki. Besides a star, a Dutch flower, we also give what we call a "pluim".
-
A "pluim" for your hard work here on Meta and other projects! Romaine 6 feb 2009 1:45
- Hallo Romaine, dank je wel! I like stars though, but only the big ones floating in space and when I am not too close to them, we are all made of stardust :) But of course I love feathers, especially in winter when it is cold.
- That is very nice of You ... or ... wait did You pluck that pluim from my plumage O.O
- :) Kind regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 02:01, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
- I think you lost this little feather while it is so beautiful, but therefore other birds help you and bring them to you, so you can really reach the place where ruimtevogeltje feels fine. :-) Romaine 02:07, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
Interwicket
[edit]Hi!
A few things; as you note I've fixed it to leave templates on its userpage(s) when updating the text, just took a bit of magic:
utext = (u'\n'.join(re.findall(r'\{\{.*?}}', op)) + '\n\n' + userpage).strip('\n ')
(;-). ("op" is the old page text, "userpage" is what it wants the text to read. If the resulting utext == op, then it doesn't need to re-write the page.)
I've just about finished the 3rd component to interwicket: it uses a "langlinks.sql.gz" file from the dumps, the dump of the language links table for a given wiki, and the union index that is built and updated (160+MB local db), and goes through and updates all of the iwikis in that wiktionary, together with all the cross-links between others for the same titles; all without touching any pages except the ones it needs to modify (;-). I'm running it through sw.wikt now; then I can see which others to do. There are a lot of missing links: the other process just seemed to catch lots of things at random, and miss lots. (The first time I ran Interwicket on the en.wikt after RobotGMwikt stopped running, it added 100,000+ missing links, that that bot would never have gotten (minor languages, etc etc)
And one more little thing: in Kiswahili, as you know, "ndege" is bird (or airplane). But you might want "kidege", the diminutive? "birdy"? (And does not mean "little airplane", which would be "ndege kidogo".) Thanks for the es.wikt flag. best regards, Robert Ullmann 15:26, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
- Hello Robert, many thanks for the work! Also thanks for 'kidege', best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 19:43, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
- I've noted a lot of missing iwikis out there. I ran a comparison between the fr.wikt and the union index (offline), and found the fr.wikt has ~80,129 entries in need of updating. The existing 'bots haven't been keeping up? (In some ways I don't think they can, when I ran mine on en.wikt after GM disppeared, it added 100K+ that that bot had never found.) Lots to do. Robert Ullmann 10:49, 9 February 2009 (UTC)
- Just thought you'd find this interesting: I wrote a new "wrapper" for the interwicket code that compares the union index of all titles (cached locally) with the language links tables from a number of wikts (downloaded dumps); and then calls the code to update all the wikts for titles that are not completely interlinked. (It thus again adds no server load, except the pages being changed ;-). That way it can hunt down missing links when en.wikt doesn't have the titles. I gave it the language links for about 10 of the larger wikts, and it read through them for 3 or 4 mintues, and queued up 237,149 tasks to do. (!) Lots missing. Might keep it busy for a while, at something less than one title/minute (sometimes 20-30 page updates). Robert Ullmann 17:54, 10 February 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks Robert for the updates, yes, maybe the bots did not find all links, or it just takes so long for one round to go, though after GM stopped his bot the interwikilinking got worse (of course) on all other Wiktionaries until some tried to fill that hole, I am glad You are helping and hope that Your botscript will even replace the one all others are using now, maybe it will be implemented in pywikipedia, so everyone could use it instead of the unflexible interwiki.py.
- However, Your work is much appreciated, thanks and best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 21:13, 10 February 2009 (UTC)
- I generated a "task list" of all the entries with missing iwiki links, in the biggest 30 or so wikts; on Feb 14th, there were 525,001 tasks. (!) This doesn't mean the 'bot has to run that many titles, perhaps 1/5 that number. But there are also a lot missing in the other wikts. I designed a control process that builds the list (from XML dumps etc, all offline) and then runs the tasks in an order that gives priority to entries with the most missing (or invalid), takes care not to overlook small wikts, and then has some randomnization (so it doesn't spend days on one large wikt). Left running, it will eventually get them all (it picks up new XML files "on the fly", if the dumps are running, which ATM they are not). Has done a bit over 10K so far, needs a few more bot flags to be really effective. (And anything RoggBot, VolkovBot and birdy-bot do is of course helpful to getting these crunched.) best, Robert Ullmann 18:42, 17 February 2009 (UTC)
More status: if you look at wikt:User:Interwicket/FL status it shows the number of entries in each wikt to be done (still needing iwikis added or updated). A lot still out there. The other bots are doing various parts, and Interwicket is keeping a queue of everything and munching through it. The code is very stable now; still quite a ways to go. Robert Ullmann 16:19, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Hide/show / collapse/expand
[edit]Hi Birdy. I know you're probably busy but I was wondering if I could get some advice/help from you regarding the hide/show / expand/collapse functions on navboxes at the bottom of article pages on the Manx language wikipedia. I've been led to believe that it has something to do with the monobook and common .css and .js scripts. So far we have not been able to enable these functions and we would be very grateful if you could have a look at them and perhaps change them to ones that would work or if that's too much maybe to point me towards a person who would be able to help us on this.

Not an essay?
[edit]Please define an essay. What was wrong with my writing? SA ru 17:00, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
- Meta is not a place to host attacks or anything, there is a RFC about that issue, if the ru.wiki community thinks there is a problem locally they will respond, if not, not, right now to me it looks like You are the only one having a problem and are campaigning against some users who either blocked You or checked You. I recommended You to solve the problem locally first (because the audience would be bigger) and then on Meta, but You chose an RFC, so now be so kind and let others respond to it and stop attacking users. Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 17:09, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
- That was not actually my question. My question was about the scope of Wikimedia essays. I would be interested in writing some essays covering certain aspects of Wikipedia, but I need to understand essay policies. As far as your analysis of the situation, you are incorrect when you say: "right now to me it looks like You are the only one having a problem". There is an extensive discussion going on in ru.wiki about this issue. If you do not believe me I can give you many links. Another question that I would like to ask: are you getting any guidance from ru.wiki users Kalan and Vasiliev VV? SA ru 18:21, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
- I am not guided by Kalan or Vasiliev, because I can decide for myself, I decided to delete that page because it was an attack, someone else might even have blocked You for that. If You wish to know what an essay is, please consult the wikipedia, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 18:29, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
- You are a steward, right? Please protect me from "someone else". I read the guidelines which say: "Essays may range from personal or minority views, to views that enjoy a wide consensus amongst Wikipedia editors". I want to write an essay about checkusers. The essay will cover a range of views. How can I avoid what you call personal attacks? Not refer to anybody, speak in general terms? Please give directions, and I will follow. SA ru 18:41, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
- I am not deleting pages on Meta as a steward, that has nothing to do with that. The page You created probably contained Your personal view, but that does not contradict that it also was an attack-page. I am quite puzzled why people are putting so much effort in (in my eyes) so unproductive or even destructive things, rather than working in the projects.
- But since You asked me, any page which contains attacks towards other users (or probably even communities) might get deleted on sight, even if one puts an 'essay-template' around it, the rest is borderline and some essays might get a {delete} by some people and a {keep} by others in a deletion request.
- But the real directions or rather recommendations I tried to communicate were to try to sort it out with the locals. Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 19:01, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
- Actually the essay I created did not contain my personal views. (I guess you can re-read it and see for yourself.) It was mostly descriptive of the views expressed by :ru:User:Drbug, and I did not have an intention to attack anybody by that essay. Speaking of your duty as a steward and my duty as a "whistle blower", it seems there is no problem at all in me bringing the issue to your attention at RFC. If you think that the issue is unimportant, that's fine by me. Just do not shoot the messenger. Do I have your permission to write an essay Pitfalls of checkusing which will be void of any personal attacks or attacks on communities? SA ru 19:19, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
- If it was Your opinion or not is not relevant, but how it was presented and what it contained. I don't want to endlessly repeat myself. Also as already mentioned stewardship has nothing to do with that, nor am I shooting anyone. You don't need my permission for doing anything as long as You stick to the common rules of the society. Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 20:02, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
- If stewardship has nothing to do with that (I assume you mean judging the checkuser performance) why are you then judging the situation and giving recommendations (see your comments above)? I am getting lost here. Looks like nobody wants to take responsibility for anything. I have yet another question. Here I started to document the violations of ru.wikipedia.org checkusers that I know. However, from your hostile attitude toward such writings I am sensing that reporting any violations or conflicts is considered an attack page. Is this the case? SA ru 21:11, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
- Stewards do not evaluate or decide per policy but fulfill the wish of the local communities, if You are writing of abuse it is usual to have prove of that, and don't put things into my mouth or invent my attitude new, I think I have said enough about that matter, You just need to read it or the meta related pages about checkuser policies and steward policies, which You will find in the search-field, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 21:15, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
- P.S. Deleting pages on Meta is done by Meta-sysops, not stewards (which is why I mentioned that I miss the connection to that flag), that I happen to be a steward too is not important for this task, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 21:37, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
- What you say is quite interesting, and I definitely do not like such system. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia in which articles have different language versions. The difference is in languages, not in anything else. It makes no sense to delegate rule making entirely to local communities. A local community of a jungle tribe may decide that their vandals should be eaten for dinner. So, would you fulfill the wish of such community? That's a really bad idea in my opinion. Some kind of central power is necessary. SA ru 22:09, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
- Maybe so, maybe not, we can't decide that here anyway, but if everyone would do as Фёдор Михайлович Достоевский suggested in his short story "Сон смешного человека" we would need no 'power' structure at all. Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 22:25, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
- That's actually not a problem at all, and accords with your position. Just open a community for such editors and fulfill their wishes. In fact, I would enjoy such community myself because it would have no checkusers and no sysops. The reality is, however, somewhat different. After steward control over ru.wiki checkusers was removed, their appetite for "investigations" and "surveillance" increased dramatically. I will provide more details in my request for comments. Oversight removal
[edit]Just curious, Spacebirdy, why did you remove the Oversight bit from yourself? -- Thekohser 18:17, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
- Because I added it myself ;)
- I removed an address, clear name and telephone number from an userpage and since Meta has no local oversighters stewards do that, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 18:18, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
- Ah, so just a "quickie". I understand. I was sort of hoping that it might be some overwhelming concern about legal risks associated with acting on behalf of the WMF on various sensitive work, without their backing should a legal threat materialize. We're going to be looking at that over at Akahele.org. Be well. -- Thekohser 18:21, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

- Seriously, I have no clue what You are saying.

Your demand on Walloon Wiki
[edit]If you can do it, or you know the way, I need to be a manager on Walloon Wictionary, that I started recently, and, untill know, the main contributor. It is necessary for me :
- to delete "bad pages" (this one, for ex.)
- to create a set of special characters (with the most usefull IFA signs, see here) we can use when creating or modifying a page.
- to improve translations (some of them are already on Walloon Wikipedia, where I am a manager).
Thank you.

Betawiki and Special:AllMessages
[edit]Hi Birdy, thanks for approving my adminship.
Just a quick question, does Wikipedia's Special:AllMessages override translations done on BetaWiki? Because some of the translations I have done don't seem to be showing up on the kw-wiki. Is there some kind of setting that needs changing, an update, or a different reason? Many thanks, kw:User:Moon --79.74.146.108 13:11, 10 March 2009 (UTC)
- This person claims to have kw-2 at [[13]] but says here [[14]] that he has only been studying our language for two weeks, and elsewhere admits that his Cornish is poor. Is it correct to make such a person an admin, one of only two for that wiki? User:Kw-Mongvras

- Hello Kw-Mongvras, You had one week to object to his adminship locally, where he made a request, he even left a message at the local sysops talkpage about this. There are wikis where the sysops don't speak the language at all, they are just watching for balant vandalism, so far I don't see any problematic edits of this user, and You are invited to help translating the interface at betawiki: too.
- Thanks, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 06:40, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

- I don't understand what You are saying, please can You discuss that in betawiki and as far as I can see You are both no native speakers... I have not seen any suggestions on his talkpage, what he did wrong or how he could improve things, I would say that is the usual step to make first, most people respond just the way they are talked to. If You disagree with his interface translations You can say him so on betawiki or correct the translations (don't worry about editwars, they would be seen fast over there), --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 00:16, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
- Birdy, there are no native speakers of Cornish apart from a few young adults, but afaik none of them are active users of the language. There are about 60-300 fluent speakers, depending on exactly what you mean by "fluent". Mongvras 03:31, 13 March 2009 (UTC)

- Thank you for your comments. Some time ago I was asked to write a short article for the Cornish language Wikipedia, and I assumed that other Cornish speakers would be doing the same. But now I have investigated the site it seems to consist almost entirely of stubs. There seem to never have been more than three or four people active there, only one I think from the language community. Frankly it makes the Cornish language look a bit of a joke. There are quite a few fluent Cornish speakers who could contribute useful content, but the Wikipedia seems never to have attracted them. I don't really understand why this has been allowed to continue for several years, when it's clear that this wiki fails to meet the Wikimedia conditions for starting a new language. I should like to discuss this with people from other small language wikis, admin etc. Could you advise me the best place to do this. Thank you.
- PS The main problem with Moon is not so much his lack of the language, but he is not familiar with the politics where the Language Board are under attack from a number of splinter groups. So that simple things like how templates are spelled can affect who will and will not want to contribute. Mongvras 22:43, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
- Hello Mongvras, thanks for the reply. There are many projects out there who are lacking editors, what I can tell from my own experience with this, it is not much of a problem to leave them open, only someone has to clean the mess from time to time. The problem is, that if people are saying they would be interested in contributing they should just do it, and if they don't like some template names they should change that, it is a wiki. If people are just keeping arguing it will not get better itself. I started in a project which had ~14 entries, it now has ~14.000. -> it is never too late to start and frankly, for naming template one does not need to be sysop, in fact the sysop work is only cleaning dirt and I see that Moon does this pretty well so far. But note that he has a temporary status anyway, since there was no community for a voting. Also if there are more people interested it would be great if they just joined and they could also ask for sysop rights if they need to delete stuff etc., but as said, for contributing, naming templates, moving etc. sysop rights are not needed, anyone can do this. Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 22:52, 11 March 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, it's good to have someone willing to watch the site and remove vandalism, most of us who are involved with the language have too many other things to do. However there has been some very masty politics around the Cornish Language over the past few years. Just trying to keep the en-WP page free of propaganda led to personal abuse and threats (see my talk page there), as a result I pretty much stopped doing any WP work. There is a danger of 'political vandalism', i.e. minor groups trying to take control of the Cornish language WP and use it for propaganda, especially since there has been almost no interest from fluent Cornish writers. How long do you wait for take up? Anyway, that's part of a more general discussion about small WP's. I'll take that up elsewhere, can you suggest the best place? I'll take up the translation issue over on Betawiki. Mongvras 22:58, 12 March 2009 (UTC)
- It is usually decided on a case by case basis which wiki to close, personally I am not a friend of these closures, because I know it is very hard to get them open again and often editors who would have contributed to the project are driven away.
- The proposal can be made at Proposals for closing projects.
- When the ones who could contribute stay away because they wait for some miracle to happen the project might never grow (unless a miracle happens of course, but it is very unlikely, that a Cornish encyclopedia forms on the wmf-servers by chance).
- Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 00:16, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
- I think a proposal for closure would be a bit too strong at this stage. But I would like the situation reviewed by the wider community. It looks to me like some help is needed. I would not want it to close really, but I can't see much good in it just being a sandpit for one or two people, especially if they make policy decisions that keep fluent writers away. Sorry for what happened
[edit]Hello! Spacebirdy. Sorry for the inconvinience I caused. I will follow Your instructions in case I need that. However those redirects I deleted were totally incorrect due to the then lack of proper Turkmen keyboard when they were created. When users write them they seemed not aware of both linguistic and wiki principles. For example there is no such thing as orsça dil in my language. It should be rus dili instead. And there are too many incorrect things here to be fixed. But now I understood that I had ignored their links, whether they were working or not. Now I ask Your permission. I will restore all of them AND one by one after changing thiir link to the right one I will delete them again. For example I will change all the links of orsça dil to rus dili AND then delete orsça dil redirect since it is nonsense like Engelishe Language Language (instead of simply ENGLISH). I'm waiting for Your understanding and assistance in this issue. For two years now no one attempted to fix all these thing in our wiki. Please help me and I'll do my best!!!--Hanberke 04:12, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
- One more issue is that there are 30+ poem articles in our wiki. there just written famous poems and I don't think that wiki will have them. I don't want to restore the poem pages I deleted and I want to delete the rest 20+ poem pages. We dont have a community to discuss this. Since Mardetenha seems familiar with the nature of Turkic languages, he can give me advices and I can do proper things!!! Best regards--Hanberke 04:31, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
- I am going to revise and check all my deletions one by one since not all of those deletions need to be restored. It will be very time-consuming.; Please give me space to deal with this issue!!! I'm here and ready to cooperate!!!--Hanberke 04:39, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
- Me again! Now I have been checking all those redirects' links one by one and fixing them properly. For instance, I didn't restored Chәržew because it is nothing to do with my language at all in respect of both charcters and spelling. How does this sound in English - France: Fyrance or Francee; Amsterdam - Amusterdame. You can check it in Google search. You will not find something like Chәržew. And in English wiki i don't think that administrators will allow the aforesaid redirects. This is the same thing. I will leave proper redirects as they are and also I will create a range of necessary redirects (CapsLock, old names, variants). Tk wiki is not a proper one as the most enhanced wikis. It needs serious revisions. As You have noted I will do it gradually. At the moment I'm busy fixing all the links of those unproper redirects. And there are many spams and empty pages. I will restore necessary stubs back. Best Regards!!!--Hanberke 05:26, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
- I also removed some pages and redirects in Turkish, Azeri, Russian and English etc. for this wiki hasn't been supervised by a native administrator, many contributors made edits, created pages and copied texts from the abovementioned langueges. I will fix some of them and will remove the others that cannot be fixed. I will do it gradually not to repeat my fault in freely deleting the redirects without thinking about its consequences. I'd like You keep eye on my wiki and give advices. --Hanberke 05:54, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

Spam complaints
[edit]Hi, Spacebirdy. I don't know if you can help me here. Recently, I have welcomed a few users at vo.wiki on their talk pages. Apparently, the MediaWiki software emailed some of them to alert them for the fact their talk paged had been edited. Problem is a few of these users (3 or 4) complain they received spam because they didn't want to receive any email from Wikipedia. Moreover, the email is in Volapük, which almost nobody knows about.
You can see some of the complaints here and below. What can be done? I already alerted them I don't have any control over this (besides editing talk pages) and that they can simply deactivate that option in their user preferences. May this preference should be off by default? Thanks for your input, Malafaya 12:59, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

{{#time:D|{{{year|{{CURRENTYEAR}}}}}0101}}

Mon
It seems that #time doesn't recongnize the punjabi numbers. because {{CURRENTYEAR}} gives the current year in the language of the wiki.

Interwicket April Fool's
[edit]I had added a bit of code to Interwicket to make it more effective at finding iwikis to be deleted. So the bot took its revenge yesterday, suddenly discovering large sets of these. (Meanwhile, it is very busily adding lots of missing links between vi, fr, and ru, pairwise and sometimes all 3, which seems to have been neglected.)
The Tamil wikt has a large number of "English" entries that were created by taking a Tamil/English dictionary and inverting it. (I know I need not explain the fundamental problems with this ;-). But also with little quality control, lots of the English entries are phrases and other definition forms. Not my problem, except that the process also "helpfully" added an en interwiki to every single one. Interwicket was removing them when it happened on the entries; now it finds them all. It has thirty thousand queued up now, and I suspect that is only about 1/2 of them ...
Another thing it turned up is a set of pages in the Telugu wikt that use(d) interwiki links in (what appear to be) translations tables. Interwicket (or any other interwiki bot) removes them, as none are valid. I am working out how to fix those pages (revert, change any apparent iwikis on lines beginning with "*" to add the missing ":", try again) but they still are very odd. You might look at (say): this page in edit mode and look at the table. The links appear at first to be links to the translations, but they aren't: the en and fr links aren't to Latin script, and zh not to Han characters, etc. But they are not links to the same word in Telugu script either, as each is different. (Might they be transliterations into Telugu script? I can't tell, it all looks pretty, but doesn't mean anything to me ;-) None of the link targets I've checked exist. (A few dozen.)
It would be very good to figure out what is/was going on before applying some fix (always important to understand what you are doing). The same user who created these was also using the wrong link form on the en.wikt, and had to be repeatedly corrected. I left a note on his talk page (in te.wikt). Do we know anyone who speaks/reads Telugu?
There are also a lot of English entries like the Tamil wikt with bogus iwikis to en, but that isn't a problem, bot will crunch them. Robert Ullmann 09:33, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

I have a problem with infobox templates
[edit]Hello, Spacebirdy! I have a problem in copying some kind of templates into Turkmen wikipedia. I usually copy any template with its transcluded templates and it works. Then I localize it. However when I copied an infobox template with its transcluded templates everything was OK, but it appeared on the left side and with no border lines. I guess I missed something of which I have no idea at all.
Last time I copied infobox template:Infobox Monarch from English wiki to http://tk.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Infobox_Monarch as it is. When I copied this template used in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osman_I to http://tk.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osman_I with all the transcluded templates, everything was OK. But it just appeared at the left side of the page (and without a border line). (Would you please copy that ready infobox in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osman_I to http://tk.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osman_I and see what happens) Something is wrong or missing about which I have no idea. If you can help me I will localize it as soon as possible and many more other necessary templates. And thanks for the gadget you installed at Turkmen wiki. Do you think that some kind of gadgets are too be installed to resolve the aforesaid issue. If yes how can I do that? Please help me! Best Regards --Hanberke 05:21, 3 April 2009 (UTC)
- Oh, my God. It worked. Thanks to your assistance months-long torture (!) and unclearance are over now. That is very kind of you! Thanks again. Best Regards--Hanberke 10:33, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

Corrections!
[edit]Hello, Ndege. It is been a long time since I came here. But today I have something to ask! As for the Wikipedias babel, is this right?
This person can? can? See it below:

There is two can, istead of being one only! I was about to change it, but I didn't change it due to the less of understanding the process of maintain any template here in Meta! I hope you can check it again. All the best, Cheers.--Wikipedian (Activist) 16:08, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

This person can can write very clearly in Simple English.
There is two "can" at the same sentence. Please do check it again, that's all. Cheers.--Wikipedian (Activist) 07:55, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

Thank you for the ChtitBot bot flag. Could you please also give a bot flag to VolkovBot on the Armenian Wikiquote, who is a Global bot? Thank you :) Chaojoker 17:19, 8 April 2009 (UTC)
- Halló Chaojoker, Volkov added the request on 6.4.2009 [16] and since this wiki does not allow automatic approval and the local policy explicitly says 7 days, we cannot grant the botflag before they expressed their opinion and before 7 days, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 13:34, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

Crosswiki vandalism from this IP
[edit]Spacebirdy, I apologise for this IP's crosswiki vandalism. According to WikiProject on open proxies/manual, the host has been hijacked so as to allow unauthorized access to the proxy to one or more persons - I have found malware recently and had to reinstall my operating system. I did have an Apache server running from it, and it is now clean. It took a fair few hours to do, but it was needed. I'm sorry if anyone's misused the IP, and to avoid this in future, I'll try and see what I can do to prevent my Apache server being publicly accessible from the web - it was never meant for public exposure, just testing. [18] is now login end (for a router) only, so now I won't get people publically accessing it. --82.42.237.84 16:58, 14 April 2009 (UTC)
- One more thing... I should really keep my server secure. :)- --82.42.237.84 22:11, 14 April 2009 (UTC)

I-210 has been (finally) blocked from the English Wikipedia. However, he is starting to do other things; apparently he created a sock on meta and has done some 75.47 IP block evasion. I was wondering if you believe a global lock / block of his account would be appropriate? (Also note that in the last few days he got his username changed to User:I-15 and then User:I-10. I don't think they handled the SUL correctly, and he created the I-210 account again and got indef'ed as a sock). --Rschen7754 07:56, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
- Yes, I know, we usually don't gblock IP ranges unless it is really needed. So far I think it can be handled by the local wikis, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 09:24, 17 April 2009 (UTC)
- I'm just asking for the I-210 account to be locked, not any IPs. --Rschen7754 00:12, 18 April 2009 (UTC)
- Please do that on SR/SUL, I have many things to do lately and don't know when I can look at that, and if it is even needed (spreading to other wikis etc.), thanks, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 05:49, 18 April 2009 (UTC)

Paragraph break (line break)
[edit]Hi Birdy, I had discussed this recently on IRC channel as well and was told that parser functions are the same in all languages. But, I have repeatedly faced the issue and realised that they are not. Please compare the Gujarati and English texts here. You will notice that in Gujarati, it has failed to recognise "line break" as it has done in English. Though there is a line break in original text ("stroke" after the sentence), when you view the actual page/message, it has merged those two lines, which is not the case in English paragraph. Is there any solution to this? this creates unnecessary need to use <br> or </br> on pages, and so far as I remember, I was advised not to use them while translating on translate.wiki. No need to say that your help will be much appreciated.--DhavalTalk 08:54, 30 April 2009 (UTC)
- Got it, but I am even confused, it is reallyh random, sometimes it works simply as new paragraph and sometimes goes with the same para. Anyways, I realised that it is the same in English and Gujarati. Best way to avoid mixing two paragraphs, is to hit Stroke key twice, or enter a blank paragraph, so that the desired paragraph structure can be seen. Thanks once again Birdy.--DhavalTalk 22:09, 4 May 2009 (UTC)

Macedonian Wikisource
[edit]Hello Spacebirdy. I want to ask you whether you can grant me that adminiship since all users voted, see here. I know it is ridiculous when I am saying "all users", but they are the only ones that edit there, besides me and I found their names only on the recent changes during the previous days. One more question: is there any special permission about the change of the text on the logo that Macedonian Wikisource uses? The logo uses the English name and I want to translate it into Macedonian but I cannot find the logo that is used on the Macedonian Wikisource. Thanks and regards.--MacedonianBoy 15:54, 1 May 2009 (UTC)
- I have made the logo, see here and I have made a request here. Is this enough or I should make request at Bugzilla, or I should automatically change it on the MK Wikisource? I am asking since it is the first time to use a MK logo there and if there was a mk logo I know the procedure.--MacedonianBoy 11:21, 2 May 2009 (UTC)
- Hello Spacebirdy. I would like to remind you that today at 2 o'clock ends the voting so you can give me that status in order to start cleaning the categories and the java scripts. Thanks.--MacedonianBoy 09:47, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Hello
[edit]Hi Spacebirdy again. I have problems with the admins on the Bosnian Wikipedia. They have blocked me just because I have tried to clean one article. That behaviour on the Bosnian Wikipedia by the admin Seha is just too much. I have written and opened a discussion on the talk page of the article that I have cleaned and no one responded me and suddenly I was blocked with just one day of editing on that Wikipedia. Please warn that admins and unblock me there since that is against all rules of Wikipedia. Thanks in advance--MacedonianBoy 10:45, 10 May 2009 (UTC)
- Further more, this is the article and the song was represented as bulgarian and the text was on Bulgarian. I have delete it since the song is written in 1964 by a Macedonian singer. I was reverted and the text of the article was deleted by that admin. After I was blocked he realised that made mistake and now the article has only one sentence and there is no POV in it but I am still blocked and the behaviour of that users is just not civilized. --MacedonianBoy 10:49, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

- The article was changed as "this song is popular in Macedonia and Bulgary" by naming his macedonian autor. Thats what the anonimous user has give as a source. Ther is no word about "bulgarian song" as you sayed. The fact is: this is an popular song on whole Balkan (wich has been corrected) and specialy in Macedonia and Bulgary. Thats what the article says. You have been warned and you have edit twice again. If you are a admin, you need to know that more than three reverts in 24 hours are editwar. Bs.wiki has it own rules for vandalism, ant those says that there are no nationalistic edits to bear. This is what we call NPOV on all wikipedias. I don´t see an reason for appologize, you have been blocked by the rules. Once more: if you promise not to vandalize, i gonna unblock you.--Seha 11:12, 10 May 2009 (UTC)
- Seha I havent vandalized, I have given explanations on the talk page and what I should do if you do not give explanations? You are reverting me without any reasons and explanations where as I have given mine. I wait for that unblock and appologize for the naming me vandal. The article had Bulgarian name for the song, the Bulgarian lyrics and a category Bulgarian songs. What do these telling to the reader? Now you have realized what I have been doing and the article is OK right now. I wont vandalize since I have never vandalized. But keep up in mind the POV on the Bosnian Wiki, I have the one that cleaned the nationalistic BG crap.--MacedonianBoy 11:15, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

- The bulgarian lyrics have been removed as you start with your edits. Your explanations was "this is not a bulgarian song". Thats right and nobody says something like that. Thats why his macedonian autor is named for! But also, the fact is that this song is one of the most popular folk songs in Macedonia and Bulgary. Thats what the category says. There is also a category macedonian song in the article. I know what this song means to macedonian people, it is like the second hymn, but the fact is that there are much singers in Bulgary wich have this song in his repertoire. Once more: read the article once more (text was deleted in every language, even in bosnian), if you can finde enythig what is not true, i gonna change it. But just to say this is macedonian song (thats what is standing in article, macedonian autor was named) it´s not enough. By a good will, i gonna unblock you, but don´t do it again. OK? bo.wiki
[edit]Hello, Spacebirdy. I would like to become a sysop in bo.wiki ("temporary" is ok) and I know how to do it, but the problem is that there are no active users. As for now I have 1 vote in favour from semi-active Tibetan, so I cannot apply for sysop rights here unless there are more suppoters. I contacted former administrator of bo.wiki, User:Drini, but he seems inactive. So please visit my current request (more details there) and if you find my candidacy appropriate, please vote. Do not vote if you think I am not worth being a sysop there. Thank you. --Wisconsus 08:35, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
Portal or Makala
[edit]Hello, Ndege. There is some problems at there on the Swahili Wikipedia - I don't know how to solve them. As it shown above the head is w:sw:Portal:Sanaa which doesn't show the tittle bar as PORTAL but MAKALA. I don't know how do they call them in Englsh, but the series of the links can be found on:
Makala, Majadiliano, Hariri, Historia, Sogeza, etc..
In the PORTAL, the first one doesn't deserve to be MAKALA, but PORTL as it is called it's self. But there on the Swahili, the first one is MAKALA instead of being PORTAL. See them here. So, what's make it to be like that and how am I going to change it?--Wikipedian (Activist) 15:02, 15 May 2009 (UTC)

[edit]Hello geimfyglið, I left this message on the Steward requests/Permissions page. Thought I'd leave you a note here in case you miss my comment there: unfortunately the existing bureaucrat HPNadig is not active on kn.wik. There is really no active community yet on kn.wikt (if there were one, the Kannada Wikt would have not have less than 100,000 entries by now - it has only 253). I am building a community from scratch, and need to modify some templates, locked pages, correct some message translations, remove personal details left by earlier editors on some of the locked templates, etc to even communicate effectively with the Kannada community. - Okay, if you've no major objection, I will restore them. We have common practice for a reason, and removing warnings because the person in the wrong wants them gone is not common practice. If the IP in question really didn't mean to make the edit he did, then the warning won't affect him at all. If he's lying, the warning can be there as a basis for future warnings. [edit]Reply to "Hello, yes, this is the wrong section. Meta-administrators have nothing to do with that project, it had been approved by the language committee, and it is tiresome to have the same discussions every two months. Please just accept it and contribute to Your wiki-project. (Besides why do You use "we" instead of "I" if You are presenting Your opinion, You are obviously one person, this is an awkward attempt to put more weight into it IMHO). Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 15:46, 11 June 2009 (UTC)"
This is not an awkward attempt at all. I am fully aware why I use "we" I administrate a group of Facebook and we are at least 500 persons who are against the so called Egyptian language and I represent them. I am allowed to use "We". Next time ask why I use we before saying that it is an awkward attempt. I have been forwarded to a lot of destinations to present our opinion. I hope you can help. Thanks and my Best Regards.

- Still You are only one person, if other 500 want to speak they may do so, but as said on Your user talk, the language committee approved this project and there already had been discussions in the past to close it again, since they have been denied, I suggest to dedicate the effords to something constructive instead of destructive and live on. Vandalism at vi.wiki
[edit](in reply to [24])
Hi,
Thanks a lot for your help!
We definitely want to report abuse to the vandal's Internet provider. It'd be great if you could help, as we haven't got any experience on reporting abuse.
About hiding the insulting accounts, I'll ask vi.wiki community first then get back to you. For now, my opinion is simply to delete these account's user pages (or not to create any in the first place) and let them be. That way they will get lost very quickly in any logs.
Best regards, Tmct 13:58, 27 June 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks!
- I've been reading around en.Wikipedia:Abuse reports. It looks to me that the sysop who prepares the report is not necessary the same as the contactor, and that one can look for a contactor after the report has been done. Is that correct?

Temp admin status on rm.wiki
--Kazu89 15:54, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

[edit]Hi, Spacebidy! Me again bothering You. There is a problem with some letters (actually 8 characters) in providing internal links as I provided an example for each. In the problematic way, wiki recognizes these letters as the first letter of a new word, not the continuation of the present word. In the present way, it is time-consuming and intimidating (or discouraging) to provide internal links. I think these characters need some kind of settings. It might a big problem with respect to programming or otherwise. Would You please help me to fix it or direct me to someone who can do that?! By the way this issuealso seems unfixed. Sorry for disturbing!!! Best Regards--Hanberke 06:41, 10 July 2009 (UTC)
Sysop right, period, and policy
[edit]Hello, Ndege. I have some questions regarding the rights of the sysop who's been inactive for a year/six months. Do they have a right to have the sysop right for all that time? Gently I know that when someone who been active in certain projects and eventually got disappear, has always comes to Meta and ask for his/her removal of access. But one of the people who been active in our community, they are not even think to do so. What I want to know is the policy of removing sysop rights. I asked this because I listed some of our former users and it's occured that I need to know the rules (which periods are suppose to remove someone from the sysop rights). That's all. Cheers.--Wikipedian (Activist) 06:04, 11 July 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for your advise, but we have two users who are not active since July 2007 and the other one since 2006. What do you think about those two?--Wikipedian (Activist) 11:35, 15 July 2009 (UTC)
- Wow! It's awesome. OKAY, I will never ever comeback here again and ask for they are removal, ever! That's cool, Birdy. Cheers.--Wikipedian (Activist) 14:54, 17 July 2009 (UTC)
Rename of all accounts of my SUL
[edit]I have a question, I want to go through with a rename of my universal SUL from ChristianMan16 to Christianrocker90. My problem with that is I read I'd have to request a rename on each individual wiki to complete the universal part, but with like 40 or so wiki's to do it on and me not speaking most of the languages, not to mention with me being blocked for 6 months on one and banned indef on another, I was wondering is there a place where I can request a rename and a steward or someone go and rename in each wiki? Thanks for you help.-- † CM16 06:45, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
SZ & SZ(Bel)
[edit]Hello. This is me again. Is it possible to unit two accounts (SZ & SZ(Bel)) on be.wiki in one, f.e. in SZ(Mn) (this forth advice was the best as I suppose:))? [edit]Hello Spacebirdy! Thanks for the bugreport. Looking forward for the update now. Could You please also render assistance in translating some stuff. Turkmen wiktionary and also wikipedia still use English words such as Template:, Category:, Mediawiki:, ets. In the same way at the status bar of IE turkmen wikis' names are as in English, namely wiktionary not wikisözlük and wikipedia instead of wikipediýa. For instance these two are vikisözlük and vikipedi in Turkish, and in Russian викисловарь and википедия. Now I want to localise the aforesaid and like. But till today I couldn'r find a way to achieve this. Seemingly, it is not translated in translatewiki.net. I would appreciate if You could help me as usual. Global username changes
[edit]Hi, thanks for your answer on "username changes". I think I'm a bit confused as to the way I should change my username. What I was looking for was some way to change my username on all the wikis including commons and foreign wikis (mainly French, Spanish and Chinese). Is there any way to do that, and if so where should I make this request? Thanks, Laurent1979 19:45, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

Removing admin privileges from a user
[edit]Hi Spacebirdy!
We're having a vote at pt.wikt to remove admin privileges from a user. I checked the user rights management page and it says there that I cannot remove his admin privileges, which I find weird since I'm a bureaucrat. Therefore, I would like to ask you what is the procedure to have his admin privs removed.
The vote only officialy ends two days from now, but this user has used his privileges in the last week to vandalize our wiki and to block some of the good contributors we have. I want to remove his privs as soon as possible, to avoid any more troubles with him.
Can you help me? Thanks in advance.
--ValJor 10:54, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
- Hi ValJor (and sorry birdy for replying instead, was watching RC), you can post a request at SRP#Removal_of_access after the discussion ends. -- Mentifisto 11:01, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
- Already answered here, best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 11:09, 26 July 2009 (UTC)
Ok, now we took out his admin privileges but he continues to harass us in all possible manners using many of his sockpupets and even some anonimous IP addresses. I have been blocking him here and there, but this situation is really untenable. Is there a way to simply ban a person from accessing our project? If no, is there a "legal" way for me to simply block all his sockpupets forever? Do I call a vote to get the community's approval? Or is there another way to rid us from this annoyance? Thanks in advance for your reply.
--ValJor 22:01, 2 August 2009 (UTC)
- Hi Spacebirdy!
- Here are some of the sockpuppets that he has been using recently:
- He has dozens of others that haven't shown up in the past few months.
- He has also created two others that he hasn't used yet:
- pt:wikt:Usuário:Jesiela Nise
- pt:wikt:Usuário:Capador Di Grillus Canttantis (this one I'm not 100% sure, but it "smells" like him)
- And on top of that he also "contributes" using anonymous IP addresses. Here are some of them:
- pt:wikt:Usuário:85.246.130.244
- pt:wikt:Usuário:85.246.131.151
- pt:wikt:Usuário:85.246.137.51
- pt:wikt:Usuário:85.246.152.18
- pt:wikt:Usuário:85.246.153.46
- pt:wikt:Usuário:85.246.154.160
- pt:wikt:Usuário:85.246.155.173
- pt:wikt:Usuário:85.246.156.144
- pt:wikt:Usuário:85.246.158.146
- pt:wikt:Usuário:85.246.158.165
- As you can see, this guy is a royal pain in the neck...
- --ValJor 14:31, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
- As requested, here is a non-exhaustive list of the vandalism and harassment that the user above has inflicted on pt.wikt:
- Well, I think that's enough for now...

Automatic approval
[edit]I've just removed my block. Here you said that "I don't see any bad thing he is doing here, and blocks are not for punishing people but to prevent damage". I see a little contradiction in your words: prevention and recidivism are not really synonyms. abusive users
[edit]We have two uses (both sysop, although clearly neither should ever have been), who have spent the last month engaged in a relentless campaign of personal abuse and intimidation directed at anyone objecting to a very controversial and (to some people) offensive POV proposal they are trying to ram through. Admin selection for Turkish Wikinews
[edit]Hi Spacebirdy, We as a newborn Turkish Wikinews, need an administrator. you can see this page that needs deletion, and this page that needs attention. Even our homepage is not protected against anonymous users. We made a poll in this page for adminship. User:Srhat (an established user, previously was an admin in Turkish Wikibooks, who also contributed the project while it was on incubator) is one of our candidates. What i kindly want is: Can we fasten this selection process, so that you change his status to an admin, and he speedily takes care for our newborn wiki? If your answer is no, then how long should I wait for another request, because, we have no local policies. --Joseph48 19:35, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

A request
[edit]Hello Spacebirdy. I have one request for you, if you want to take care of it I would be very happy. The request is to check one incident on the EN wiki where I was insulted and personally attacked. The case is the following: I was cleaning the article Goce Delčev and I got reverted by a user called Jingiby where he wrote Rv. macedonist, who used to play with articles. (Macedonist in the BG speaking world is a huge insult, a person that is Bulgarian and supports fake Macedonian nation + he tries to damage my authority as user). Then he reverted me again on another article where he wrote that I am clown. I informed the admins on the EN Wiki here but they do not want or cannot block him for personal attacks and insults. Then I wrote to the admins Sandstein and Magog the Orge and I got ignored (probably since Sandstein is on line but did not answer me. Can you please solve this case? I was publicly insulted and no one reacts. Jingiby and his fellow wants to change the subject of the insult and to damage again to my authority, but I hope that his insults were enough. See his block log and you will guess how is his behaviour. Thanks in advance.--MacedonianBoy 16:20, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

Bot summaries
[edit]Hello, Spacebirdy. The problem on the breaking of links in turkmen wiktionary has been solved thanks to your assistance. Now it is live and fixed. I have some problems again for which I'm looking forward for your kind help as usual. First one is this bug report. It hasn't been repaired yet as is seen here. Alphabetical order is a basic need. The second is that this bug report hasn't been processed yet. Would you please vote for this report? Third, I didn't find any place to translate these bot summaries such as robot Removing:. They seem inappropriate since I am about to complete Milestone 2 in Betawiki. Thanks in advance. Best Regards--Hanberke 05:50, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
Cherokee Wikipedia
[edit]Hello! :) I am cleaning up the Cherokee Wiki but need to work on the main page, I put a notice about that on the Stewards'_noticeboard#Cherokee_Wiki ... but is that the right place? I would really like to get this going while I still have momentum. Cheers, Nesnad 04:12, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit]Hello, I have a question. I found a list of words. It’s about 3500 words Welsh-Frisian. Is it possible that you can bot the list in to the Frisian wiktionary. http://www.geocities.com/ekfrysk/wel7ywdf.txt Greetings from Fryslân Jellefrl 22:37, 17 October 2009 (UTC)

[edit]Hi. I would like to request import rights on arwp, but i wanted to ask you first, does local consensus discussion only would be enough for that or we need a vote for that? best --Ciphers 11:00, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
Bengali Wiktionary
[edit]Hi, I'm an user from Bengali Wiktionary. Currently there was only one admin, and he made is last edit in 5 April, 2008. Vandalism occurs in bn wiktionary, but we can do nothing. So, that project need a regular administrator. I want to apply for that right. Where should I apply? If i apply in bn Wiktionary, then there is only 1/2 persons to vote. So, may be I need to apply here. What say you? please consider this urgent. Thanx. — T@nv!r_ (Talk | Contributions) 06:29, 9 November 2009 (UTC)
Multiple accounts
[edit]Hi Birdy, I once again need your help, this time I have a doubt that on gu.wiki, someone using multiple accounts, though there is no malpractice by the user, but I still want to make sure whether accounts Indiasabarmatig and Mittalgandhi are owned by the same person, and if so, what does wiki policy say? So far as I am aware, it is against the policy, please correct me if I am wrong.--DhavalTalk 09:58, 11 December 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks Birdy for your advise, so I'm relaxed now, but still just out of curiosity, is it possible to know whether both are owned by the same user?--DhavalTalk 14:30, 11 December 2009 (UTC)
- Got it mate, Thank you!--DhavalTalk 18:18, 13 December 2009 (UTC)
Wikimedia Forum
[edit]Hi Spacebirdy, in the wikimedia Forum, the MiszaBot is non working well. It removes your edit, with a previous tag "/PRE", so there's an unclosed tag "PRE". --Dragonòt 21:19, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
- Hello, it is not my bot, please contact the owner, I did not leave a tag open. Best, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 21:48, 12 December 2009 (UTC)
Recent Changes
[edit]Hello, Ndege. I'm having some problem which I don't even know what to do in order to solve it. I can't access the recent changes page. When I open it, it is coming these tetx:
/* generated user stylesheet */ a.new, #quickbar a.new { color: #CC2200; }
- article, #bodyContent, #mw_content { text-align: justify; }
I have two type of the web browser. One is MS Internet Explorer (that was the first one to bring this trouble). Second is Mozilla Fire Fox (it is currently stuck to opening as the MS one). Please help me solve this problem. Yours,--Wikipedian (Activist) 11:54, 21 December 2009 (UTC)

Your comment
[edit]Hi, regarding this: I didn't mean that you are not entitled to change your comment, I just meant that using strike-through to indicate the comment that had been altered would have been less confusing (VasilievVV's reply seemed totally absurd when the original context was removed). –Ejs-80 16:14, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
- I did not mean to make anyones comment absurd, on the other side I really don't like the commenting of other peoples votes, users have a talkpage to talk to. Best regards, --birdy geimfyglið (:> )=| 16:19, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
- Of course not, and that thought didn't even occur in my mind. What comes to commenting, I think that it is beneficial to correct misconceptions, since that can prevent someone else from making the same mistake in interpreting the voting page (I think that the section Comments is best suited for this). –Ejs-80 16:32, 1 January 2010 (UTC)
