Instructions

SUL finalization

[edit]

If you are requesting a merge of a global account with one or more unconnected local accounts as part of finalizing your single unified login (SUL) username, please specify which wikis and accounts you want to merge into your global account. These accounts were typically named "account name~wikiname". Please note that we can only merge a local account into a global account when the global account has no edits on the same wiki as the local account.

How to add an entry here

[edit]

To add an entry, please copy and paste the text below into the appropriate section.

=== Oldname ===
{{SRUC
|status = <!--don't change this line-->
|domain = global
|Oldname =
|Newname =
|reason = (your remarks here)
--~~~~
}}

Example

For global rename requests:

=== Example ===
{{SRUC
|status     = <!--don't change this line-->
|domain     = global
|Oldname    = Example
|Newname    = Foo
|reason     = your remarks here
--~~~~
}}

Making a request for your own account

[edit]

For changing your username on one wiki:

Please include the following information in your request:

  • the old username,
  • the new username,
  • please sign ~~~~ request with your account for a simple move (first section), or sign this request with both the originating and the target accounts if you are requesting a merge (second section).

If anything is missing from your request, a steward will request more information. This helps ensure that you are requesting a rename for your own account. Please check before posting your request that the username you want is available.

You can test that by going to the (new) user page and looking into the sidebar. If there is a link to user contributions, the account already exists, or check via Special:CentralAuth.

Private requests

[edit]

Account renames are not private, once renamed many links from the old username to the new username will be permanently made. The reason submitted on the rename form (Special:GlobalRenameRequest) is private, and only visible by the renamers. Additional information that needs to be made in private may be sent using this direct wiki-email interface while logged-in.

Simple rename requests

[edit]

If your rename request is simple and does not involve usurpation of an existing account or other SUL issues, you have two options:

  1. Use the request form at Special:GlobalRenameRequest; or
  2. Submit the request below in this section.

Please use this tool to check if the username is taken before filing a request.

Requests involving merges, usurps or other complications

[edit]

Please add new requests at the end of the section. Sections should be titled your username and requests should be signed by the requesting user.
Please note: Per standard procedure and consensus, accounts with valid edits are not usurped, and the target account must be notified by renamer at least two weeks before usurpation.

@علاء: It appears that the target account has an email address attached. Have you notified them by email as well? If so, could you please note it, as otherwise after the hold period we may inadvertently approve it without checking with you whether there was any email response. – DreamRimmer 12:04, 3 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
DreamRimmer, the above mentioned user already notified (both talk page and email). Although I do not recall a prior consensus to notify the user through both ways, things were proceeding by notifying the user only through the talk page, or leaving the choice to the discretion of the renamer. The page states at the top "and the target account must be notified by renamer at least two weeks before usurpation." without specifying either ways or one way. --Alaa :)..! 12:17, 3 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I am not sure why this user notified the target account on their own, as this step is normally handled by the renamer. Each request is first assessed by a renamer/steward to determine whether the usurpation can proceed, and many requests are declined for not meeting the criteria. As such, notifying the target account before this assessment is premature. It also leaves us with no reliable way to verify whether any objection was raised via an email response, as while we assume good faith, we cannot be fully certain in this case given that the user has a conflict of interest in the request. Regarding notification on both the talk page and by email, this has long been the standard practice, and there have been instances where renamers had to restart the hold period because the email notification was overlooked. – DreamRimmer 12:46, 3 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that there has been no prior discussion on this, and I am considering starting an RfC so that we can clearly note whether this is required. – DreamRimmer 12:56, 3 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
Isn't it usually the case that when someone is notified by talk page, they get an email automatically as well? Leaderboard (talk) 13:00, 3 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]

@Brabo and Sjoerddebruin: I'm afraid that we cannot merge accounts. Given that the ~nlwkisource account has no edits and you now hold the main account, I don't think any action is needed. You may deal with the ~nlwkisource account like any other doppelgänger accounts. I recommend redirecting its user page to your main account. 1F616EMO (on zhwiki) 16:27, 17 January 2026 (UTC)[reply]
