Wikimedia Conference Pre-Conference Workshops on Program Design, Evaluation, and Community Learning
We are happy to announce that, as in the last two years, during the days before Wikimedia Conference, there will be a small programs and communities learning pre-conference.
Workshop sessions will be scheduled on both Wednesday, April 20 and Thursday, April 21, 2016 preceding the main conference days.
Over-arching workshop goals include that participants will:
- Gain a basic shared understanding of priority topics in program design, evaluation and community engagement.
- Gain increased fluency in a common language of our shared learning
- Learn about different sources and tools for measuring impact
- Increase skills in using data and shared knowledge routes to design and implement high quality programs
- Increase participant skills and resources as teachers and mentors to their home communities in key learning areas
- Enjoy time networking with other movement leaders
The priority topics selected via the registration survey as most relevant to participants current Wikimedia work, and which we will design the pre-conference around, are:
- Engaging and Retaining Volunteers (e.g., Participatory Engagement Strategies, Communications & Social Media)
- Best Practice Exchanges with other Leaders (e.g., Lightning Talks, Creative Problem Solving)
- Designing Wikimedia Programs and Events (e.g., Program Toolkits, Creative Program Design, Workshop Design)
- Measuring and Evaluating Impact (e.g., Logic Models, Outcome Mapping, Data Analysis, Metrics)

Learning Day Outcomes
For this issue of Learning Days, the Program Capacity and Learning team decided to move away from the traditional pre-post survey, and used a more comprehensive feedback form. This new template allowed participants to submit feedback on each session, and take notes for their own use back in their local community. This template had three areas to complete:
- Liked best, for session highlights.
- Next time, for areas of improvement.
- Next 30 days, for specific applications of the knowledge shared during Learning Days.
Of the 51 participants that took part in Learning Days, 31 people (60%) offered feedback on all sessions.

In the Next time section, people requested to have more time for technical sessions, as well as for discussion sessions. Other feedback with regard to areas of improvement include: giving handouts, the size of the projections, and having translations available. Only a few comments regarded the room environment, referring to temperature and the amount of food available.
As far as incorporating the knowledge shared during Learning Days, most people plan to try these skills in the next 30 days. In the analysis of feedback forms, we identified two different ways program leaders hope to spread these capacities: bringing back processes to their local communities, and applying tools and resources to their projects. The peer-to-peer learning approach came through stronger than in any other issue of Learning Day, as demonstrated by callouts to program leaders on feedback forms and mentions of other programs in the key takeaways.

This Learning Day showed a record number of community members presenting a lightning talk, a 3- to 5-minute flash presentation to share an idea, project or program to inspire others. For this issue of Learning Day, 19 community members engaged in this way; most presenters created a poster for visual support, a few had slides, others shared an online portal (on or off wiki).
