This page enables stewards to handle permissions requests, including the giving and taking of administrator, bureaucrat, checkuser, and oversight rights, for all Wikimedia wikis which do not have a local permissions procedure. If you are requesting adminship or bureaucratship, and your wiki has a local bureaucrat, submit your request to that user or to the relevant local request page (see the index of request pages). Requests for bot status, URL blacklisting and whitelisting, and CheckUser queries belong elsewhere.

Interface-translations are done at Betawiki.

For urgent requests, such as to combat large-scale vandalism on a small wiki, contact a steward in the #wikimedia-stewards^connect IRC channel (see a web-based IRC client). In emergencies only, type !steward in the channel to inform stewards that you need help.

Please only make requests here after gaining the on-wiki approval of your local community.

The project names are coded as follows:

Enter "wiki" for Wikipedia after the language code.
Enter "wiktionary" for Wiktionary after the language code.
Enter "wikibooks" for Wikibooks after the language code.
Enter "wikinews" for Wikinews after the language code.
Enter "wikiquote" for Wikiquote after the language code.
Enter "wikisource" for Wikisource after the language code, but enter "sourceswiki" for the Multilingual Wikisource without a language code.
Enter "wikiversity" for Wikiversity after the language code.
Enter "commonswiki" for Wikimedia Commons without a language code.

Confirmation of identity

Certain permissions (notably CheckUser and Oversight) additionally require users to confirm their identity. Users requesting these permissions must make a request below, and must also submit the relevant identification to the Foundation. The request is placed on hold temporarily, until receipt has been formally confirmed by the office.

Administrator access

See administrator for information about the position. Requests for temporary permissions and removal of access belong in other sections.

Bureaucrat access

See bureaucrat for information about the position. In principle, requests for temporary bureaucrat access are not granted.

CheckUser access

To request CheckUser information, see Request for CheckUser information. This is the place to request CheckUser access. Note that temporary CheckUser access is not permitted and the temporary status is only used by Stewards.

Stewards: When someone asks for CheckUser status, please check the current policy regarding bestowal of status before giving the status. The current mail template to use to request identification from the new CU can be found here. Do not grant CheckUser access unless the user is identified to the foundation, which will be announced on the Identification noticeboard. Breaching these rules may be cause for removing your steward access. When you give someone CheckUser, please list them on CheckUser, ask them to subscribe to checkuser-l, email checkuser-l-owner@wikipedia.org so that the listadmins know the person is allowed on the mailing list (the list may contain confidential information), and make sure they contact an op for access to #wikimedia-checkuser.

The vote gained a 70% approval, but failed to meet the minimum 25 approving votes as spelled out in the checkuser policy. Kylu 05:17, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As per policy, a wiki can have 2 Checkusers "at one time" or None, and since right now there is no CU on that wiki, we cannot give rights to one user only since its against policy..and Adrian has passed his RFCU but he cannot get the right because only when there are two "qualified" candidates, can a steward grant the CU access and it seems you have failed your RFCU, so at this time, i will agree with spacebirdy..a user must get 80% support and 25+ votes in support to pass and your CU request is 70.4% which is a fail...--Comet styles 05:22, 12 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Wizzard, yes I read the part about Adrian, but You have to be appointed at the same time, there will be no single cu on a project. @voting: In the link I gave this is the relevant section: "[...]After gaining consensus (at least 70%-80%) in his local community, and with at least 25-30 editors' approval[...]", which is why I said it failed, the support You gained is not enough. Oversight access

Do not initiate an oversight request here. The Arbitration Committee will make the request once there is consensus on the local wiki (this process is currently for en-Wikipedia only).

Stewards: Do not grant Oversight access unless the user is identified to the foundation, which will be announced on the Identification noticeboard. When you give someone oversight access, list them on Hiding revisions.

Removal of access

If you want to request that your own status be removed, please don't forget to place a note on your local user talk page (preferably with an English translation). This is required to prove your identity. And then add the request here. You should add the difflink of your local confirmation edit to the request.

To request the removal of another user's status, you must gain consensus on the local wiki first. All discussion must be kept on your local wiki. When there is community consensus that the user's access should be removed, a trusted person from that wiki should provide a link here to the discussion, a very brief explanation of the reason for the request, and summarize the results of discussion.

Copy and paste the following text into the correct section. Fill in all the required fields -- language code, link to the local request, and link to your local user page. Without this information, a steward cannot process your request.

Removal of checkuser from Wikimol@cs.wikipedia

He has only 17 edits in last year (only two in mainspace) and is not active at cs.wikipedia in any way. Now, he is checkuser only because Czech Wikipedians are not able to elect anybody else. See cs:Wikipedie:CheckUser/Hlasování/2008), where they unsuccessfully voted new checkuser because of Wikimol is not active. Existence of paper checkusers like this one is strongly against of idea of checkuser rights at local projects. --Minalova 23:07, 6 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Per Checkuser#Access_to_CheckUser: On any wiki, there must be at least two users with CheckUser status, or none at all. Therefore it seems the CU access should be removed, per policy. Cirt (talk) 23:49, 6 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I know the mentioned rules, but: cs:User:Wikimol (the 2nd CU) has edited in last three months several times, every time concerning check user; in his last edit from Sept. 3rd 2008 [2] he mentioned, he is still following the matter and he will do (checking the logs, reading the page with requests etc.), stating to do it in the future as well (I can provide the translation of the whole); by the way, if I search for sul:Minalova so I get nearly nothing. Removal of checkuser from Cato@en.wikiquote

Due to circumstances that Jimmy Wales and Cary and at least one other enquote checkuser are aware of, and events in the last couple of hours, please de-checkuser Cato on English Wikiquote.

I emphasize that this is a temporary action only to protect that project until its own users are in possession of the relevant information to decide what they wish, and in no way intended to impinge upon the sovreignty of that project. Unfortunately I cannot find anyone else better able to make that decision in light of events that are rapidly unfolding.

I will post a fuller explanation of this to Cary and Aphaia immediately, and to the wikiquote community hopefully tomorrow.

Notified: I carefully reviewed FT2's mail and agree on that this temporal removal may be beneficial to the project in entire in regard of concerns raised on the mail, while I personally trust on Cato as CU and think he hasn't abused his power until now. This temporal removal may ensure no abuse has been done by him, since none can abuse the power he doesn't possess.

I think English Wikiquote community will welcome further information from FT2 and I hope we make a wise decision on this issue with the information FT2 will give us later. --Aphaia 07:24, 6 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

FYI, Aphaia (talk · contribs) posted a notice locally at Wikiquote, at q:Wikiquote:Village_pump#FYI:_Cato_is_temporally_de-checkusered. Not sure if the Wikiquote community's discussion will take place there though or if that is just a general community notice about Requests for comments/Poetlister and Cato. Temporary permissions for emergency or technical purposes

If you are requesting administrator status to make a translation of the wiki interface, see also the BetaWiki project, which seeks to make a neutral MediaWiki translation that will then be default for all wikis. That is more useful than only making a local translation. You can ask questions in the IRC channel or in the mailing list. See also MediaWiki localisation. When granting a request, please copy the request to the appropriate section there, and clearly state the date of removal. Reminder

Import rights can be granted by stewards only, not bureaucrats, so the automatic list of local bureaucrats is irrelevant for this.
