Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat/Archives/2014-12

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

There are some behavioral concerns with the above editor that do not quite rise to the level where I would propose a global ban, but it is getting to that point. Allen2 was indefinitely blocked on the English Wikipedia (see here) for reasons of competence, and recently with his talk page access revoked. Since then, Allen2 has been using IRC channels and meta here to contact editors he interacted with on the English Wikipedia including myself (here) and Technical 13 (here), among others ([1], [2], [3]) about being unblocked and their account deleted. The editor claims they are going to stop editing Wikipedia, but this has been promised before and not lived up to. I feel like the editor should be blocked from meta on the basis that they have been making indiscriminate requests about their block and their account across any available forum. I JethroBT (talk) 05:21, 21 November 2014 (UTC)

Not all of the linked requests are related to the English Wikipedia block directly, the message to you seems the first real attempt to use Meta to discuss their block, as the other are related to global requests, even if misunderstood ones. I'm not sure that a Meta blocked is warranted at this time, tho the user should definitively be reminded that enwiki blocks are appealed on enwiki and not on Meta. Snowolf How can I help? 05:28, 21 November 2014 (UTC)
Alright. Directions for requesting an unblock have already been provided at en:User_talk:Allen2#Talk page access revoked. I should also mention the editor has e-mailed multiple editors, namely myself and Technical 13 ([4]) during the course of his indefinite block requesting us to do something about the block. I JethroBT (talk) 09:21, 21 November 2014 (UTC)
Hi there Jethro and Snowolf! Alright, I'll refrain from contacting them about my block because you both did left a message on my talk page to notify this. But no, don't purpose a global ban on my account or block me on Meta because I edit through Wikimedia foundation was fine. Snowolf, I'll do about it on BASC. I were blocked infinitely/indefinitely on the English Wikipedia, but I don't have to ask for unblock on English Wikipedia through Meta at this point until I was emailed by Technical 13. Brohoof! --Allen (talk to me! / ctrb / E-mail me) 00:35, 22 November 2014 (UTC)
  • To be honest, I was on my way here after Allen's most recent post on my talk page on meta to request a block. Based on his inability to "just walk away" until further notice (I told him on his enwp talk page and via email that I would email him and discuss things with him and help him understand why he was blocked and once he had it all figured out that I would suggest to him when requesting an unblock might be appropriate and I would help him format a proper unblock request), I'm not seeing it as being likely that he's going to stop asking for help here to get unblocked there until he is also blocked here. I was unaware until I got here that he has also been pestering helpers on IRC, and as such, between attempting to use email, IRC, and a sister WikiMedia site to evade/get lifted a block that is based on a like of competence (three strikes in my playbook), I strongly support a block on Meta and/or I weakly support a global block (with talk page and email revocation for either). Allen, you are a motivated and driven young male, and I think you have the potential to be a great editor (someday). Based on our interactions so far, I don't expect that to be for at least a year or more (and who know, maybe you'll get distracted by "other things" by then and will have lost interest in editing at all), but you really need to stop begging for an unblock and pestering people on IRC, by email, and on enwp sister sites. Continuing to do so will end very badly for you wanting to edit at a later date when you get a little older. Please, take our words to heart and stop posting on these sites. I'm still willing to email you within two months of your last post on any of these sites and helping guide you in reading the essays, guidelines, policies, and whatnot that you need to be a successful editor in the future. Technical 13 (talk) 18:21, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
Hi Technical 13. See User talk:Eurodyne#Out_of_editing.... Allen claims that he won't be editing anymore. I don't 100% believe that though. What do you think? Eurodyne (talk) 18:25, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
There's no "global blocking" for registered users currently. Global locks are the equivalent, but they prevent even logging in and should only be used in cases of cross-wiki abuse (I don't think it applies to this situation). He doesn't meet the requirements for a global ban either. As for a local block, I'll leave that to other admins, but I don't see how it would help. I do completely agree that his attempts to appeal his enwiki block here should stop, but a lot of his edits are more related to Meta-Wiki and steward processes than his block (such as his request for an account on the foundation wiki, and his questions about global account deletion). He even said he was leaving. PiRSquared17 (talk) 18:31, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
  • I'm not sure that "two" projects is enough to call it cross-wiki abuse either, although if it starts on a third or fourth, then my weak support would get stronger. I'd really like to see this editor stop editing all together on all projects for a couple months, on his own without being forced into it. I'm not sure he is capable of that at the moment though. PiRSquared17, do you know if global .css and .js been enabled yet so he could voluntarily add a wiki-break enforcer script to his common.js here on meta to help him resist for a month or two? Technical 13 (talk) 19:01, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
Since GlobalCssJs was enabled, all that is required to enable global JS is to create User:Allen2/global.js. He already has global.css. PiRSquared17 (talk) 19:15, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
	var date = { year: 2015, month: 1, day: 23 };
	var time = { hours: 23, minutes: 59, seconds: 59 };
Good luck! Technical 13 (talk) 23:29, 23 November 2014 (UTC)
Alright, done until 23:59:59, January 23, 2015 then my account wikibreak is over. Contact by email by this date, you know his answer now? —76.31.88.143 00:20, 24 November 2014 (UTC)
I've warned Allen - if he continues to ping people about his block then I will block him here. I really hope he is able to step back, though I also don't think he will. He said he was leaving two days ago, then again today... it doesn't look like any leaving is happening. Ajraddatz (talk) 19:06, 23 November 2014 (UTC)

(redacted) I apologize for the inconvenience, but I redacted this reply means I don't edit right now and get myself in trouble until that expires with my account under wikibreak for few months! —76.31.88.143 19:49, 26 November 2014 (UTC)

Again, Technical 13, this is Allen! I will be your friend and not feel more angry if you can email me back on that date because I will try to avoid editing on the English Wikipedia with this IP then I will be very happy with Princess Celestia! This is only my last reply, then I won't make any replies until you email me for few months! You clear?! —50.175.118.57 20:06, 28 November 2014 (UTC)
@Ajraddatz: I'm sorry, but the above comment from the editor is pretty telling of how likely he is to refrain from editing. Also see en:Special:Contributions/50.175.28.140; these contributions include an unblock request when the editor has been clearly told to use UTRS. I JethroBT (talk) 18:14, 3 December 2014 (UTC)
He hasn't edited here since the 28th, but if he does make any more attempts to discuss his block here then I will take action here. On a side note, his unblock request on enwiki was one of the most ridiculous things I have read and would be a strong argument against unblocking him. Ajraddatz (talk) 20:24, 3 December 2014 (UTC)
I have to stop editing as an anonymous IP at this time, but Adrian don't take action of blocking my account on Meta! Last comment above you Jethro, my account is on wikibreak because I was responded by Technical 13 on this section and Adrian on my talk page that I have to take a break for at least few months! Technical willing to email Allen on 23:59:59, January 23, 2015 if I have no more edits before that date that my wikibreak is over! Jethro, please don't make anymore replies on this section that I have done on Wikipedia as an anonymous user! I apologize for the inconvenience! Clear? —50.171.98.213 22:47, 3 December 2014 (UTC)
Blocked for a week. Please don't try to evade this block and sit out your self-enforced wikibreak. Ajraddatz (talk) 22:51, 3 December 2014 (UTC)

Using Silk on my Kindle: Switching to desktop view getting redirected to the same mobile page

I have issues with this redirect because the function doesn't work anymore. I click on it, goes to en.wikipedia.org/wiki/<PAGENAME>, and goes to en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/<PAGENAME>.

If only I can enable Request Another View. 2602:306:CC2E:EFB0:4DD:D395:2BAB:D2D0 05:01, 27 November 2014 (UTC)

If you view a page in mobile view, there is a button at the bottom of the page to switch to desktop view. For example, if you go to https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page, at the bottom, you should be able to see Mobile | Desktop links. Click on "Desktop" and you will see the desktop view. --Glaisher (talk) 05:05, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
It doesn't work; I still get redirected to the same page. 54.163.170.18 05:09, 27 November 2014 (UTC)
I think you have to change some (network) settings either on your Kindle or in browser. --Stryn (talk) 22:13, 3 December 2014 (UTC)

Mass message sender right

Hello everyone, would you be so kind as to grant me the Mass Message sender user right on Meta Wiki which will help me distribute the Education monthly newsletter to the talk pages of subscribers listed here every month. Thank you! --Selsharbaty (WMF) (talk) 17:02, 5 December 2014 (UTC)

Done. Ajraddatz (talk) 17:03, 5 December 2014 (UTC)

Request for a banner

Hi. Wikimedia España (WMES) will conduct several editing workshops during the next weekend in collaboration with science museums in five different Spanish cities. We need a banner to ensure the maximum number of attendees. I have a banner design here. The details of the campaign are:

  • link: es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Encuentros/Wikimaratón_Científico_2014
  • dates: 11th - 13th December.
  • logged-in and anonymous users.
  • destined for Spanish users only. To be shown in all projects in Spanish language (es.*)

We may need another banner translated in Galician language for their own projects. I'll provide more details about it as soon as I can. Thanks. Montgomery (talk) 16:52, 10 December 2014 (UTC)

In Galician language: CentralNotice WMES Wikimaraton 2014 , Harpagornis (talk) 17:38, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
I'm taking care of this. -- M\A 18:23, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
Hecho (Done), verificad que todo esté en orden, por favor. Si hay que hacer algún cambio, estoy a vuestra disposición. -- M\A 19:47, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
Note: campaign ended, so I've deactivated the CN and archived the campaign. -- M\A 11:05, 15 December 2014 (UTC)

Abuse filter to restrict editing of Request for an account on the Foundation wiki by anonymous users

Since anonymous users are ineligible to request an account, and this page is a frequent target for test edits, it would make sense to prohibit anonymous editing. However, because not all legitimate users will necessarily be autoconfirmed here, I'm requesting an abuse filter to this end rather than page protection.--Jasper Deng (talk) 08:18, 16 December 2014 (UTC)

Please, are excessive requests on a week. Alan (talk) 09:59, 16 December 2014 (UTC)
I think an abusefilter is way too exaggerated. Page protection should suffice, if by chance someone comes along who doesn't have an autoconfirmed account on Meta yet, he has to post somewhere else or wait 2 days; that's no reason to create an AF which would need to be checked by the software on every edit which happens. --MF-W 14:29, 16 December 2014 (UTC)
I didn't saw MF-W's comment while I was on duty, so I'm afraid Special:AbuseFilter/106 is created. Can be disabled and kept for later in any case. Thanks. -- M\A 14:32, 16 December 2014 (UTC)
There is no reason to prevent anon edits on the talk page so I've removed that condition. Perhaps also add a warning message? Our abusefilter disallow message is too generic. --Glaisher (talk) 18:01, 18 December 2014 (UTC)

help please

Hello;

i.p. 212.156.67.30 is used by Başkent University in Turkey and this i.p. is blocked nearly 4 years ago in Turkish Wikipedia. The admins in Turkish wikipedia are told about this but they are not likely to unblock. Thank you for help.

Meta sysops do not and are not able to remove blocks at other wikis. DerHexer left a message for the blocking admin yesterday but he hasn't replied yet. Possible alternative solutions: request IPBE, ask other local sysops to review the block. Also please don't spam several users' talk pages for issues like this. Thank you, --Glaisher (talk) 17:59, 18 December 2014 (UTC)
Thank you.
i live at school campus and i have no way to ask other local sysops. Blocking admin is inactive. What can we do ??
Khutuck has solved the problem. Thanks to him or her.

We've been asking around other Wikipedians to prepare banner text in other languages (Korean, Japanese, Khmer, Malay, etc.), and we hope to get translations before the banners are up, but otherwise, we hope that they can be updated accordingly when they come. Thanks again! :) --Sky Harbor (talk) 07:42, 8 December 2014 (UTC)

For Indonesian please change it into this "**Indonesian: Anda diundang untuk mengisi survei (berbahasa Inggris) mengenai kemungkinan penyelenggaraan "East & Southeast Asia Wikipedians Meetup" di tahun 2015." it's not Inggeris but Inggris.--AldNonUcallin?☎ 08:00, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
Done. --Sky Harbor (talk) 09:07, 8 December 2014 (UTC)

Hi Sky Harbor, I've added Javanese language version above. I hope you don't mind. Thanks, XoXo (talk) 12:34, 8 December 2014 (UTC)

Added ko, but not creating centralnotice as I am not familiar with CN tools. (ps. AFAIK, N. Korea doesn't have external internet connection except for the servants of the Kim Dynasty.) — Revi 18:19, 8 December 2014 (UTC)

-revi, would you know anyone who would be willing to set up the campaign? I'd ask PiRSquared if he's willing to set this one up again for me (since he set up the last CN banner campaign I requested for), but I'm fine with anyone setting this up so long as they're up. :) (Also, I wonder what's the likelihood of someone from North Korea actually coming to this meeting if they see the banner. Remote, but you never know. :P) --Sky Harbor (talk) 03:53, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
The Chinese version is strange, it needs to add the date, please change it into "2015年東亞與東南亞維基區域會議籌備中,歡迎於12月31日前填寫此份問卷(英文)提供籌備參考。". Thank you. --Liang(WMTW) (talk) 07:24, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
Done, but you know that this is just a slightly modified version of the original banner on the Chinese Wikipedia, right? :P --Sky Harbor (talk) 09:17, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
I'd ask @Glaisher. — Revi 13:09, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
Hi. I'm currently on vacation and do not have access to a decent internet connection (barely able to check my mail) so can't do a cn while Im here. :( Sorry.. let's just hope that @PiRSquared17: or another user is able to do this. Glaisher (talk) 15:41, 9 December 2014 (UTC)
Hi. May I help? What needs to be done exactly? :-) Best regards. -- M\A 07:33, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
Creating Special:CentralNotice per Help:CentralNotice? — Revi 07:52, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
Yup, thought so. I'll see what I can do. -- M\A 11:44, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
Campaign created with the languages and all the countries posted above (NK included). I'll try to set the banners. -- M\A 12:02, 10 December 2014 (UTC)

┌───────────────────────┘
Done. I have created the campaign and the banner (very simple as my knowledge of CSS is very limited). I had to change the message adding a "click here" message for the link. Until all this can be reviewed I advice against performing translations, because if the programming of this is wrong, all will go to waste. So please await until somebody more CN-savy can have a look at this. Campaign is obviously not yet activated. Thanks. -- M\A 13:02, 10 December 2014 (UTC)

I'm working on the banner again. -- M\A 20:25, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
Done - banner created again. Please add the translations]. Best regards. -- M\A 20:45, 10 December 2014 (UTC)
Okay, done. Copied all the translations over to Special:Translate, and we'll continue securing other translations. Muito obrigado, MarcoAurelio! :) --Sky Harbor (talk) 00:33, 11 December 2014 (UTC)
  • Couple comments MarcoAurelio pinged me to review:
    • It is fundraising time but I don't 'think' they are planning to be up in the region. I've sent them a message though to be sure.
    • Is it possible to split the message into 2 lines? This could be done with either a new message or just placing a <br /> break in the middle of each translation. When it's one long line like this it makes the text harder to use on smaller screens because it can wrap weirdly.
    • Because the link goes to google docs (which people may not expect and doesn't follow our privacy policy) we need to give them a bit of a warning. I'll ask legal quickly in the morning but I think it should be fine with a little note at the end of the link saying it goes to google. Jalexander--WMF 03:20, 12 December 2014 (UTC)
Hi Jalexander. About the message splitting, for the Indonesian languages - Acehnese, Indonesian, Javanese, Malay, Minangkabau, & Sundanese - the split can be made after the closing parenthesis. Thanks, XoXo (talk) 04:41, 12 December 2014 (UTC)
I don't remember the issue of a form being a Google Docs document being a problem in the past though. The last Wikimedia Philippines CentralNotice campaign was for a thesis questionnaire made using our Google Apps service and disseminated in this manner, so I'm confused now as to why we're "scrutinizing", if you will, the link being shared through this campaign if a Wikimedia affiliate's Google Apps service was used to make the form. --Sky Harbor (talk) 01:40, 13 December 2014 (UTC)
Sky Harbor To be honest, it's probably the very bad "no one noticed" reason, not that it wasn't an issue then too :-/. I did talk to legal and they agree we need to have a warning on the banner, it's fine to link to google we just need people to know that. Jalexander--WMF 01:01, 14 December 2014 (UTC)
Thanks for you assistance, Jalexander! XoXo (talk) 10:51, 15 December 2014 (UTC)
@Sky Harbor: Do you still need this? If needed, I could make the banner with a notice but would need the text to use for that (and translations of it). --Glaisher (talk) 18:05, 18 December 2014 (UTC)
Yes, Glaisher, we still need the banner. The text is the text immediately above this conversation; MarcoAurelio made a campaign but it hasn't shown up yet, so perhaps that might need to be fixed. --Sky Harbor (talk) 02:58, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
Both, campaign and banner were created, but I didn't activated them because I requested James to have a look at those first. If updates are needed, they can be done on the already existing ESEA_meetup campaign/banner. Thanks. -- M\A 13:42, 19 December 2014 (UTC)
I've created a new banner here (preview) as it's much easier to work on a new one. However, it has additional text as James suggested and needs translations. Direct translation link: [5] I haven't imported the previous translations so that needs to be done again too; it would be nice if someone else could copy them over to translate :). I could publish them then. Fundraising banners shouldn't be a problem because this is a logged-in only banner. Let me know if there is any other issue. Best regards, --Glaisher (talk) 16:32, 19 December 2014 (UTC)

What does this have to do with Meta-Wiki? --Glaisher (talk) 17:00, 20 December 2014 (UTC)
Don't reply here please, I've linked the specific subpage for this issue, use it! verdy_p (talk) 18:36, 20 December 2014 (UTC)
Actually, this entire issue is unrelated to Meta-Wiki, and should be discussed on frwiki. Snowolf How can I help? 18:37, 20 December 2014 (UTC)
@Verdy p: I fixed it in fr-wiki, see your pings there. The attribution was already there, just obscured by CSS. I fixed the CSS. PiRSquared17 (talk) 18:42, 20 December 2014 (UTC)
???? Nothing has changed, there's nothing visible in the history of the gadget, nothing when refreshing the pages. Really you did not submit your change, you just copied the existing code. verdy_p (talk) 18:53, 20 December 2014 (UTC)
@Verdy p: you need an fr-wiki admin to change the gadget. I've done as much as I can. I'm not a steward so I can't help you. But my version fixes the attribution problem PiRSquared17 (talk) 19:11, 20 December 2014 (UTC)
  • This is now finally done (it was a two line CSS fix). See updates on the "rfc" or the frwiki thread. Snowolf How can I help? 20:12, 20 December 2014 (UTC)
A really dirty fix ! The map is still truncated on the right; the IFRAME has an unpredictable and not needed (grey) border (varying across browsers, also truncated on the bottom and right); the top white area (for dragging the pannel and containing the "Masquer" link) is really huge (10%) when it could be just 1.5em... See my comments on the talk page of the gadget... Visibly the correctors don't know that using BOTH sizing/positioning AND borders/paddings together on the same element does not work well. Nobody sizes an IFRAME on the net with 100% while also keeping its borders/paddings; And Apparently you don't know clearly why a (legacy) IFRAME does not work like regular HTML elements (it does not honor basic CSS attributes and notably not "right" and "bottom") and that they have default sizes and unpredictable default borders across browsers; the fixers don't know what is "box-sizing" (in HTML5/CSS3) and how it is related to differences across browsers (IE quirk modes) or why it could be useful for HTML5 (but it is still not portable with many existing browsers, so we need to avoid mixing borders/paddings with sizing/positioning on the same HTML element, even legacy ones). verdy_p (talk) 21:04, 20 December 2014 (UTC)
The fix restores attribution. If you do not like the fix, talk to the maintainer of the gadget and propose a different fix to them. This is a frwiki matter, end of the story so go discuss it on frwiki with frwiki people. Meta-Wiki has nothing to do with this and multiple people have advised you of this in multiple venues. Snowolf How can I help? 21:10, 20 December 2014 (UTC)

  • Not multiple people, only you,. And the LCA has thanked me about submitting them the issue which was certainly not specific to French Wikipedia ! They will monitor all similar issues oin any other wiki or server hosted by the Foundation. All other wikis are advized now. It was a good thing to alert them to avoid repeating the same issue (or similar issues that could arize with preinstalled gadgets and extensions to use third-party data). Even if this concerned just Wikipedia, there was still a very important second party which is the copyright owner (the OSM Foundation which has important signed agreements with the WMF with common projects, operated in servers hosted by the WMF or by the OSMF). That legal issue could not be ignored. verdy_p (talk) 05:52, 24 December 2014 (UTC)
So? There's nothing to do with that on Meta-Wiki, HERE. Here is a place for help about Meta-Wiki, not any other projects. — Revi 19:08, 24 December 2014 (UTC)

Please fix ASAP

Please replace "http://" =>"//" (in the CSS) in Special:CentralNoticeBanners/edit/WMIL_Wikidictionary_Course_Banner as it cause security warning. eranroz (talk) 19:54, 28 December 2014 (UTC)

Cannot view abuse log

There is nothing to do with Meta-Wiki sysops and bureaucrats about this issue. If someone want to propose change on software, do it on appropriate forum. (It is clear that here is not appropriate.) — Revi 18:50, 30 December 2014 (UTC)

When a user tries to access the abuse log while they are blocked/autoblocked/globally blocked, they cannot view it. Instead, they get an error that says they are blocked from editing pages.

What does this mean? 2602:306:CC2E:EFB0:74A7:E1BB:F6F1:4AE1 01:13, 29 December 2014 (UTC)

This is intentional and by design: blocked users cannot view the abuse log.--Jasper Deng (talk) 07:04, 29 December 2014 (UTC)
How ridiculous, they can just log out. --MF-W 04:54, 30 December 2014 (UTC)
Global config for AF for this is:
$wgGroupPermissions['*']['abusefilter-view'] = true; $wgGroupPermissions['*']['abusefilter-log'] = true;
This can be changed for Meta if there's community consensus for it, though. -- M\A 12:04, 30 December 2014 (UTC)

"Security through obscurity" is a dumb and discredited idea. The logs should be visible to everyone. "Free as in freedom" software is built on the idea of sharing. Information should be shared with everyone, including people who dislike. We shouldn't compromise freedom just to keep an "enemy" away. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 14:18, 30 December 2014 (UTC)

And then the blocked user will circumvent what-stopping-them/filter? Example: There are LTA who like adding spam pages so much that local sysop need to add regex for the words, then he logged out and see that word is blacklisted, then he change the wording just by one alphabet. VOILA, he's now back.--AldNonUcallin?☎ 15:41, 30 December 2014 (UTC)
The preferred solution to software issues is to improve the software, not hide the bugs and flaws. If a filter is being "beaten", then it needs to be improved, not hidden. Hiding hinders progress. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 18:40, 30 December 2014 (UTC)

Help

Hi. I want to revert vandal edits from 82.9.4.141 (talk • contribs • deleted contribs • logs • filter log • block user • block log • GUC • CA) but the rollback link doesn't work for such a page. I admit I'm a bit lost figuring out what to do. Any ideas/advice? Thanks. -- M\A 15:29, 30 December 2014 (UTC)

It's in the translation software; you may have to delete the numbered subpage (and grant yourself TA if needed). --Rschen7754 15:37, 30 December 2014 (UTC)
As you figured out correctly, Translations:Privacy policy/57/eml needed to be deleted. -Barras talk 15:38, 30 December 2014 (UTC)
Fixed. TA is not needed here. In these cases, we have to delete the page in Translations: namespace (which you had already done) and then null edit the translatable page manually. There's a bug about the translatable page not being updated when translation units are deleted. --Glaisher (talk) 15:43, 30 December 2014 (UTC)

Thanks all. Will remember the null edit, until the bug is fixed. Best regards. -- M\A 22:47, 30 December 2014 (UTC)
