Arabic and Egyptian Arabic for Wikimedia Egypt

Meno25, are you interested in starting Arabic pages for Wikimedia Egypt? I think they would be very helpful for the user group.

Thanks, WhisperToMe (talk) 15:34, 22 April 2014 (UTC)

@WhisperToMe: Hi. This proposal is currently stale, so, I believe that translating this page is a low priority. Anyway, let's mark it for translation and see if I have time to translate it. --Meno25 (talk) 19:06, 22 April 2014 (UTC)
Thank you for the explanation! I wonder if having an Arabic translation will make it more accessible and therefore more likely to be reactivated. WhisperToMe (talk) 11:34, 23 April 2014 (UTC)
I hope so. Thank you for your message. --Meno25 (talk) 12:43, 24 April 2014 (UTC)

Question

Hi Meno25. Apart from five actions in March, of which four were "tests", you haven't done anything as steward yet. Do you need more help with the buttons/rules/whatever maybe? I know it can be a bit overwhelming to receive so many tools at once so I'm happy to help of course, but please let me know then. Thanks. Trijnsteltalk 12:22, 2 May 2014 (UTC)

Hi. Since I have been inactive on Meta for a long time, I decided to wait a bit before using stewrd tools and watch other stewards to try to learn as much as possible so as not to make any mistakes. That's why I have been focusing my work on Meta on translations. (I have made a few thousand translations in the last two months.) I will be more active later this year. If I needed any help, you will be the first to ask. I hope that we will be always friends. Thank you. --Meno25 (talk) 20:04, 4 May 2014 (UTC)

Translation request

Meno25, might you be willing to translate the main Wiki Loves Pride page at English Wikipedia into Arabic? Wikimedia LGBT is organizing a global campaign called Wiki Loves Pride, which will be held in June. I speak only English, but ideally, there will be similar project pages at Wikipedias of other languages. This will allow collaboration, discussion and the ability to organize events in languages other than English. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your consideration. --Another Believer (talk) 15:33, 18 May 2014 (UTC)

@Another Believer: Hi. Thank you for your message. I don't think that translating this page into Arabic is a good idea. LGBT related issues are a taboo in Arabic countries and some Arabic countries sentence gays/lesbians to death. Besides, translating this page would cause an uproar anyway in Arabic Wikipedia community by religious fanatics. --Meno25 (talk) 18:38, 19 May 2014 (UTC)
So, we are not to encourage Arabic speakers to contribute to Wikipedia when it comes to LGBT culture and history? (I should clarify that I completely respect your opinion and would not ask you to do anything that makes you uncomfortable. I am just genuinely trying to learn more about your perspective.) --Another Believer (talk) 19:20, 19 May 2014 (UTC)
@Another Believer: Don't get me wrong. I respect people from all sexual orientations. I am just saying that translating this page would cause problems in Arabic Wikipedia. I just don't want to translate the page just to find that the page gets nominated instantaneously for deletion (which I believe would happen). --Meno25 (talk) 19:45, 19 May 2014 (UTC)

Egypt Wikimedians User Group

Hello Meno25, thanks for your interest in Egypt Wikimedians user group. Please have a close look on the ideas and plans on the user group page here and feel free to discuss them, oppose or add yours on the discussion page before We apply for recognition of the group to the affiliations committee. Thank you!-- Samir El-Sharbaty (talk to me) 11:24, 20 June 2014 (UTC)

Synchbot on arwiki

Hello Meno25. Synchbot doesn't delete user pages on ar.wikipedia.org, as you requested in July 2012. The latest version of Synchbot will now instead add the {{delete}} template with a reason like "no longer needed (requested by ExampleUser)", so that a local administrator can delete the page. Let me know if you prefer another template or message (possibly a translated message with a link to a relevant speedy deletion criteria). —Pathoschild 15:49, 05 September 2014 (UTC)

Goodbye

Hi all. Last August I moved to new job in the desert. There is internet connection but it is very costly. Subsequently, I am practically offline with no edits on Wikimedia projects since last August, and this will not change in the near future. I am now in a short vacation in my home city Alexandria but I have to go back to the desert tomorrow. I apologize for being a disappointment for everyone. I thought I will be able to help but this was not true. Stewardship is about responsibility not honor and there is no point in me keeping the flag if I am not using it. Please remove me from the Stewards mailing list and the Stewards wiki. I would like to thank my wonderful friends (on Wikipedia and here on Meta) whom I learned a lot from and who helped me over the past eight years. Thank you all and I am sorry again. --Meno25 (talk) 06:26, 14 November 2014 (UTC)

Bye Meno! Thanks for your service! Eurodyne (talk) 06:28, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
I've removed you from the global group as well. Thanks for helping out, and sorry it didn't work out this time around. Best of luck with your job :-) Ajraddatz (talk) 06:31, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
Sorry to see you go. Perhaps you'll be able to return one day. Best of luck! --MZMcBride (talk) 14:09, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. No need to be sorry, RL should win every time. Best of luck.  — billinghurst sDrewth 05:35, 15 November 2014 (UTC)

2 (talk) 11:05, 12 September 2015 (UTC)

This is a message from the Wikimedia Foundation. Translations are available.

As you may know, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees approved a new "Access to nonpublic information policy" on 25 April 2014 after a community consultation. The former policy has remained in place until the new policy could be implemented. That implementation work is now being done, and we are beginning the transition to the new policy.

An important part of that transition is helping volunteers like you sign the required confidentiality agreement. All Wikimedia volunteers with access to nonpublic information are required to sign this new agreement, and we have prepared some documentation to help you do so.

The Wikimedia Foundation is requiring that OTRS volunteers sign the new confidentiality agreement by 31 December 2015 to retain their access. You are receiving this email because you have been identified as an OTRS volunteer and are required to sign the confidentiality agreement under the new policy. If you do not sign the new confidentiality agreement by 31 December 2015, you will lose your OTRS access. OTRS volunteers have a specific agreement available, if you have recently signed the general confidentiality agreement for another role (such as CheckUser or Oversight), you do not need to sign the general agreement again, but you will still need to sign the OTRS agreement.

Signing the confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information is conducted and tracked using Legalpad on Phabricator. We have prepared a guide on Meta-Wiki to help you create your Phabricator account and sign the new agreement: Confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information/How to sign

If you have any questions or experience any problems while signing the new agreement, please visit this talk page or email me (gvarnum(_AT_)wikimedia.org). Again, please sign this confidentiality agreement by 31 December 2015 to retain your OTRS access. If you do not wish to retain this access, please let me know and we will forward your request to the appropriate individuals.

Thank you,
Gregory Varnum (User:GVarnum-WMF), Wikimedia Foundation

What future IdeaLab campaigns would you like to see?

Hi there,

I’m Jethro, and I’m seeking your help in deciding topics for new IdeaLab campaigns that could be run starting next year. These campaigns aim to bring in proposals and solutions from communities that address a need or problem in Wikimedia projects. I'm interested in hearing your preferences and ideas for campaign topics!

Here’s how to participate:

Take care,

I JethroBT (WMF), Community Resources, Wikimedia Foundation. 03:34, 5 December 2015 (UTC)

Future IdeaLab Campaigns results

Last December, I invited you to help determine future ideaLab campaigns by submitting and voting on different possible topics. I'm happy to announce the results of your participation, and encourage you to review them and our next steps for implementing those campaigns this year. Thank you to everyone who volunteered time to participate and submit ideas.

With great thanks,

I JethroBT (WMF), Community Resources, Wikimedia Foundation. 23:56, 26 January 2016 (UTC)

Global renamer

Hello, sorry in advance if I am bothering you. I simply want to inform you about a possibilty here on meta. After the SUL finalization there is a search for additional Global_renamers. You should know, since you have been asked to translate some of the related pages here on meta.

As I did with other users, I am contacting you because at the moment in Global_renamers#Users_with_global_rename_access and Stewards#List_of_current_stewards, if I correctly remember, we have only 3 ar-N. That's probably enough, but those 3 GRs are in fact not very acrive, if you scroll the stats, so maybe sometimes a backlog could occur.

Now, you have an en>3 knowledge, a cross-wiki experience and you are a sysop on different projects, so you know how to deal with user-related issues. If you want to be more involved in the GR tasks in the future, feel free to apply. We have accepted in the past months candidates with much lower cross-wiki activity or language skills than you, so you probably have good chances.

Please notice that I am not an expert user on meta nor a local bureaucrat or sysop, I just care about the "variety" of the meta environment and I though that it was useful to inform some users of the opportunity. If you know yourself some profile who might be interested, please let him/her know this "opportunity".

If you are not interested, or you prefer to wait to have more experience, or you think you won't be very active in the following months, that's great as well. If you want to apply, I suggest you to translate or update some of the meta page Global renamers into Arabic. Have a nice day.--Alexmar983 (talk) 21:57, 22 February 2016 (UTC)

@Alexmar983: Thank you dearly for your message. However, I will be busy in real life in the coming months and I am already an admin on enwiki and arwiki, so, I don't have time for another flag. Sorry again and pleased to know you. --Meno25 (talk) 20:04, 24 February 2016 (UTC)
You know: it is always worth a try... but if you feel in the mood, don't overthink it. Few actions are better than no action. Pleased to know you as well.--Alexmar983 (talk) 21:39, 24 February 2016 (UTC)

Inspire Campaign on content curation & review

I've recently launched an Inspire Campaign to encourage new ideas focusing on content review and curation in Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia volunteers collaboratively manage vast repositories of knowledge, and we’re looking for your ideas about how to manage that knowledge to make it more meaningful and accessible. We invite you to participate and submit ideas, so please get involved today! The campaign runs until March 28th.

All proposals are welcome - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is welcome - your skills and experience can help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign to improve review and curation tasks so that we can make our content more meaningful and accessible! I JethroBT (WMF) 05:39, 29 February 2016 (UTC)

Should FuzzyBot remove all potentially outdated translations?

Hello, thanks for adding multiple new translations in your language here at Meta-Wiki in recent years. Please join the discussion with your opinion: Should FuzzyBot automatically remove all potentially outdated translations?. Nemo (talk) 12:01, 1 March 2016 (UTC)

Open Call for Individual Engagement Grants

Greetings! The Individual Engagement Grants (IEG) program is accepting proposals until April 12th to fund new tools, research, outreach efforts, and other experiments that enhance the work of Wikimedia volunteers. Whether you need a small or large amount of funds (up to $30,000 USD), IEGs can support you and your team’s project development time in addition to project expenses such as materials, travel, and rental space.

With thanks, I JethroBT (WMF), Community Resources 15:57, 31 March 2016 (UTC)

Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.

Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,

substituting welcome template is without value

I am not sure why you are substituting Template:welcome. In fact, it is a ridiculous requirement that the template should be substituted, and seems an imported, and valueless and pointless requirement, and then to have a bot go and do that task seems equally inane.  — billinghurst sDrewth 16:53, 9 June 2017 (UTC)

@Billinghurst: Is this your personal opinion or is this a requirement every bot should follow? (Has there been a discussion about this issue that I missed?) According to WP:TG

Templates for short, temporary messages that will be removed quickly (such as on User_talk: pages) or that contain text which is not likely to ever be changed should be invoked with substitution (subst:).

And there wasn't opposition for this task when I applied for bot flag. Anyway, I am open to stopping the bot if the opinion of the community changed here. --Meno25 (talk) 07:39, 10 June 2017 (UTC)
Blindly following an arcane process from English Wikipedia on a multi-language wiki where there is no demonstrated benefit seems weird. 1) Special:PrefixIndex/Template:Welcome shows multiple languages to welcome, and these can all be regularly updated. 2) What are we gaining by substituting this template? I can see none. I am all for fixes that have value, but this one has no clear value, especially with relation to the welcome message.  — billinghurst sDrewth 12:43, 10 June 2017 (UTC)
@Billinghurst: OK. I will stop the bot then. --Meno25 (talk) 13:37, 10 June 2017 (UTC)
I haven't asked you to stop the bot, that will have to be your assessment based on what you are doing, I am asking about Template:Welcome.  — billinghurst sDrewth 14:20, 10 June 2017 (UTC)
@Billinghurst: I mistunderstood you then. Sorry. The reason why welcome templates should be substituted is explained in en:WP:SUBST (Couldn't find documentation about this issue on Meta, so, I am quoting enwiki):

Templates are often modified or deleted. If a template is boilerplate text, consider whether you want it to vary as the template is modified. If your answer is "no", substitution is warranted. An example of this is the {{welcome}} template. The archives of a user's talk page should show the actual welcome message they received, not the current welcome message.

This is the added value that you are asking about. (Showing the welcome template in user archives as the user received it not as it is now.) If you feel that this reason is not enough, then tell me and I will stop the bot. However, in my 11+ years on Wikimedia wikis, welcome messages were always substituted. I actually ran my bot to do this specific task in 7 different Arabic Wikimedia wikis. Substituting welcome templates was always a non-controversial bot task. --Meno25 (talk) 15:09, 10 June 2017 (UTC)
I would dispute the underlying premise that at a place like metawiki that a static welcome template on a user talk page is of more value. I would put forward that a template with contemporary messaging is more beneficial, and the quieter the wiki, and the quieter the talk page, then the greater value in a dynamic user page. The argument that it has to represent a piece of history rather than a contemporary welcome and guidance here at metawiki is one that I challenge. (We can always find their message in history.) Add in the factor of a multi-language template that is not built concurrently, rather than a single language wiki, in a faster-paced talk page environment.  — billinghurst sDrewth 06:36, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
@Billinghurst: We are running around in circles here and we need input from a 3rd party to settle the dispute. (As we really shouldn't be wasting all this time on a tiny issue like this.) I will post about this on Meta:Babel. --Meno25 (talk) 15:24, 11 June 2017 (UTC)
