Incubator test project: Arabic Wikivoyage

Hi, Meno25:

  1. Your test-administrator status expires in about two weeks. If you wish to renew this status, please go to incubator:I:RFTA and make a request. It's highly unlikely there will be a problem, but as you know, you need to go through the process.
  2. While I've got your attention, I took a look at the test project, in terms of trying to figure out how close it might or might not be to approval. What I found was the following:
    • There are many pages in the project, but most of them are substantially blank outlines of content you'd like to see there. We'd want to see no more than half of the article pages as stubs, and better no more than 25% of them. So at the moment this test project is far away from that goal.
    • To get approval, there needs to be a regular community of contributors to the test. A "regular community" is usually defined as "during each calendar month, having at least three (named) contributors, having at least ten contributions each". (The three named contributors don't have to be the same people every month.) There were some periods in the past where Arabic Wikivoyage met that requirement, but not in the last year.
    • There is no reason that Arabic Wikivoyage can't remain in Incubator indefinitely, of course. But if the community is interested in having a freestanding project, then those two requirements need to be met.

If you have any further questions, contact me here or on Incubator. StevenJ81 (talk) 14:53, 5 September 2017 (UTC)

@StevenJ81: Hi and thank you for your message. As I don't have much free time currently, I don't object to having my rights removed on Incubator. --Meno25 (talk) 13:24, 6 September 2017 (UTC)
Thanks for letting me know. I'm not actually going to remove them; I'll just let them expire on 18 September, as scheduled. If you change your mind, you know the drill. StevenJ81 (talk) 14:50, 6 September 2017 (UTC)

Welcome messages

Please check that a user has contributions before adding welcome messages. People at nowiki complains about why they are given welcome messages on projects where they have never contributed. — Jeblad 00:27, 15 December 2017 (UTC)

It is our custom on Arabic projects to add the welcome template to all users even users without contributions (similar to what the MediaWiki welcome script ar:مستخدم:New user message does. It adds the template to all users even those without contributions such as ar:نقاش المستخدم:Ghassan Azmouz). I have been running my bot for years with the same settings without anyone complaining. --Meno25 (talk) 06:10, 15 December 2017 (UTC)

Template:CHAPTER-COUNT

Hi. I noticed you changed this from 37 to 40, could you please explain why? I recently updated Wikimedia chapters and looks like there are 37 active chapters (41 recognised minus 4 de-recognised). I might have missed some new recognitions, thus could you please clarify? Thanks — NickK (talk) 10:53, 18 January 2018 (UTC)

@NickK: Hi. I reviewed the number on Wikimedia chapters before the edit and it was shown to me as 40. I reviewed it again now and it is shown as 37. It appears that for some reason MediaWiki was displaying an old version of the page to me. Rv self. --Meno25 (talk) 10:56, 18 January 2018 (UTC)

/qqq field is for tranlation hints

Hello, I receive notices that you are working on /qqq colums such as here. I respect your long experience contributing to wikimedia, and could you point me to any official criteria that we need to fill two spaces, the translation target and marching /qqq with the same set of texts please?

In my understanding, /qqq columns are to help other translators by giving clue how to put the paragraph/sentence we work on into other languages. That means we share knowledge, and if you read the Japanese sentence I wrote, it is plain that I have intended as so by indicating another page: I found the other page helpful to work on that paragraph, since details for a particular term is given over there. Unfortunately, you overwritten the comment with the translation target, while that sentence is given to the left of the /qqq field. I am afraid your edit is not helpful for other translators in the sense I described above.

Thank you indeed to keep eyes on wikimedia, and do you mind to revert the edit please? --Omotecho (talk) 10:42, 20 September 2018 (UTC)

@Omotecho: Hi and thank you for your work. Done for the revert. What I am doing is that I am reviewing all the /qqq messages and reverting any non-English texts (as I am assuming that any non-English text is an editing test/vandalism by a newbie who doesn't understand what the /qqq messages are used for. English is the lingua franca in today's world, so, /qqq messages should be in English to be understood by most people.) As for the specific message that you mentioned here, (and as I don't know Japanese) I restored the message to its English default (which is, I believe, a better alternative than blanking the page) assuming that what is written is an editing test. However, it appears that there are some valuable non-English notes in /qqq messages (and because it appears that people will start to object to what I am doing), so, I am going to leave the /qqq namespace as it is and return to translating messages instead. Cheers. --Meno25 (talk) 10:57, 20 September 2018 (UTC)
Hello, thank you for crisp reply, and you are quite right that posting in ja or link to /ja page is not quite helpful. Could you advise me if rewriting as follows help?
Appreciate the chance you gave me to learn. Wish your time allows to dispense advise. Cheers, --Omotecho (talk) 13:12, 20 September 2018 (UTC)

The Meta-Wiki community has approved a new bot inactivity policy which states that bots that are inactive for a continued period of 14 months should be subject to review. A bot you operate, MenoBot (talk · contribs) meets the inactivity criteria. In accordance with the bot inactivity policy, if you wish to retain the bot flag for the named account, please answer to this message no later than 6 April 2019 on Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat. After that date if the bureaucrats have not received any reply, the bot flag for the named account will be removed.
