Community Wishlist Survey FAQ

[edit]

Thank you for all translations and most recently, a suggestion to improve the FAQ. This is why I'd like to give you this Community Wishlist Survey barnstar.

Please take a look at the FAQ again. Do you have suggestions how we could improve it further? SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 16:14, 6 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thank you! 🙂 I don’t have any other suggestion for now. --Pols12 (talk) 19:02, 6 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hello @SGrabarczuk (WMF),
I just noticed a strange linking you made in FAQ: when we speak about small “groups”, I think we mean Wikimedia user groups, not technical MediaWiki user groups. Global groups link speaks about technical user groups, not about Wikimedia user groups. Please review this. -- Pols12 (talk) 21:56, 11 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hey, thanks for asking. It was on purpose - by "small groups", I meant groups with global permissions. Stewards or global admins are significantly smaller than the group of all Wikisource or Wiktionary users. I'm not saying that stewards haven't been supported. The point is that if we only were paying attention to numbers of votes, nothing else, then smaller groups would never be able to benefit from changes that are made specifically for them, because they would be outnumbered. SGrabarczuk (WMF) (talk) 22:34, 11 January 2022 (UTC)Reply
That makes sense, indeed. My bad. Thank you for your review and answer. 🙂 -- Pols12 (talk) 22:35, 11 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thank you!

[edit]

Bonjour Pols12, just wanted to thank you for all the useful edits to the Wikimedia Foundation Funds pages. Thanks so much for your support and contributions! --DSaroyan (WMF) (talk) 09:11, 29 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

That’s OK, my pleasure. 🙂 -- Pols12 (talk) 13:21, 29 January 2022 (UTC)Reply

Translation preparation request

[edit]

We need your help with adding translation markers here to stick with the project's timeline. Thanks! Assem Khidhr (talk) 14:05, 27 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Done -- Pols12 (talk) 21:31, 27 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks a bunch for the prompt response earlier. The page has undergone some updates and expansions into multiple subpages and we'd appreciate your generous touch again. Assem Khidhr (talk) 13:20, 29 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
I went ahead and translated the last subpage you've kindly marked. I'd be grateful if you can mark the remaining 3 subpages as well. Apologies on behalf of the project team for the earlier confusion with the tags and for the back and forth. Assem Khidhr (talk) 03:43, 4 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
I meet some difficulties at the moment, but I am trying to handle these pages quickly. Pols12 (talk) 13:32, 4 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Translation

[edit]

Hi @Pols12. Could you please mark Deoband Community Wikimedia, Deoband Yoruba Collaborative Project and Deoband Community Wikimedia/Events/Bhopal Photo Event 2022 for translation. Thanks, ─ The Aafī (talk) 06:35, 16 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

I just made a little change on Deoband Community Wikimedia. Please mark that too. Sorry for disruption. ─ The Aafī (talk) 12:39, 16 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
Done. 🙂 --Pols12 (talk) 14:52, 16 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Please check the Template:DCW footer as well. This has been an interesting time with you and I got to translate a few more things now such as Infobox Wikimedia Chapter. ─ The Aafī (talk) 15:20, 16 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
Not sure, why two items (Projects and sister projects) aren't ready yet? ─ The Aafī (talk) 18:51, 16 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
Mmmh. Indeed, I missed them, sorry. --Pols12 (talk) 19:05, 17 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Pols12, some items at Template:DCW footer need to be updated for translation. Missing something perhaps. Three to four links are not showing up for translation. ─ The Aafī (talk) 18:25, 11 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
Done Pppery missed these additions while marking the page for translation. For these 3 last links, month translation is automatic. Please say me if that doesn’t work properly. Pols12 (talk) 18:41, 11 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
When I mark pages with pending changes for translation I sometimes assume the previous editor of the page knew what should be made translatable rather than second-guessing them (but other times I don't and make content translatable myself; I'm inconsistent) * Pppery * it has begun 18:47, 11 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Pols12 and @Pppery. Thanks to both of you. I've translated it into Urdu and it works now. Do you guys have any idea on the template text alignment on the translated page. I mean to say all the text in this template shows "left-write-alignment" on ur extension, when it should be having a right-left alignment. I'm note sure if I've expressed myself correctly but I'd be glad to hear from you. ─ The Aafī (talk) 19:00, 11 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
I should rather say, the text keeps itself lefty though the language-type-alignment is okay. ─ The Aafī (talk) 19:02, 11 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
Some CSS properties are hard-coded in Module:Navbox. We should use templateStyles instead, to benefits from automatic direction flipping for RTL languages. I’m trying to solve this issue. -- Pols12 (talk) 19:37, 11 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
I'm not this much into technical stuff so I'm leaving this "noble endeavor" to you. Thanks for everything... ─ The Aafī (talk) 10:54, 12 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hello @Pols12: Template:DCW header awaits your urgent attention. ─ The Aafī (talk) 07:01, 27 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
@TheAafi, the template page has been re-marked for translation by Ameisenigel. Is there any other work needed there? -- Pols12 (talk) 18:50, 27 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Please mark Deoband Community Wikimedia/Collaborations for translation. ─ The Aafī (talk) 06:00, 29 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Template:Wd

[edit]

Could you please fix {{wd}} in a such way that it could fallback to en article (or fr article if en doesn't exist or de article if both en and fr articles don't exist)? I believe modification of Module:Wikidata is required. --jdx Re: 06:35, 4 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Done. Note you may also use {{lwp}} which takes an Wikipedia article title as 1st parameter instead of Wikidata item Id, so it fallbacks to the given article. -- Pols12 (talk) 10:32, 4 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, that's what I wanted. I had no idea that the modification may be so simple. Regarding {{lwp}}, I know that it exists, but I do not want to change someone's "vision", e.g. Translations:Wikimedia Foundation elections/Single Transferable Vote/1/en. --jdx Re: 16:56, 4 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Code for Africa Climate Change Project/Participation/list

[edit]

Thank you for separating this from the translatable page. I had no resource to either do that myself or explain the subject to anyone else. I appreciate you having done this, and your other work, too 🌸 Ата (talk) 17:52, 21 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

My pleasure. 🙂 Thank you for having well handled these pages (I have only made minor tweaks).
However this on-wiki subscription is not mentionned on the page, I don’t know whether it is really expected or only a legacy system which will be remove during page review. -- Pols12 (talk) 18:02, 21 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Code for Africa Climate Change Project/Feedback

[edit]

Hi Pols12 , thanks for your awesome support for the Code for Africa Project. I was wondering, on the feedback page how do I make edit to the text tried making changes but was unsuccessful,so a quick help would be suitable.Jwale2 (talk) 22:01, 22 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Jwale2: you can edit Template:Code for Africa Climate Change Project/Feedback/header, then a translation admin has to mark the page for translation to make changes visible in final page. I just have marked your changes for translation. -- Pols12 (talk) 18:23, 24 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Well noted @Pols12. Jwale2 (talk) 09:23, 25 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Help needed

[edit]

I'm not able to understand what the error is: I've just made a news page at Deoband Community Wikimedia/News and I'm trying to incorporate it up at base page. Though everything shows nicely, it displays opening and ending translate tags as well. Can you help me fix that? Is it because I'm preparing it for translation? If so, I can just remove the tags and use the English news only but the group as two official languages and it is better if the pages gets translated. Thanks in advance. ─ The Aafī (talk) 18:02, 29 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Translate tags are displayed transcluding the page while it is not marked for translation. Indeed, “marking the page for translation” creates a /en subpage without translate tags which is actually used as transclusion target. So, this should be fixed now, since I have marked the page. 🙂 -- Pols12 (talk) 19:52, 29 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks mate. Although I'm myself a translation admin on Wikidata but there being not much load of the work, I've not been able to learn so much intricacies. However, for the sake of DCW, I need to learn all this stuff and go ahead for becoming a translation admin here as well. "Tvar tags" is where I'm confused but this shows I'm a bit going good on it. Regards, ─ The Aafī (talk) 05:11, 30 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Yes, your tvar tagging in that edit is good, I only added a tvar for email address, because it must be changed through translations.
Also, please note on Category:Deoband Community Wikimedia there are all translation pages, since you removed {{#translation:}} tweak. -- Pols12 (talk) 21:18, 30 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
My bad, I mustn't have done that. I guess it should get fixed once the translations are updated? ─ The Aafī (talk) 06:52, 1 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Pols12. I'm not able to find what is missed at Deoband Community Wikimedia/Assets. I marked the page for translation as usual I do on Wikidata but I'm not able to translate it. Clicking on translate opens up "recently additions" for translation instead of this one. I'm trying to figure out but I need some ideas as well. Thanks, ─ The Aafī (talk) 05:24, 7 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
I had to search the group first, and then I get it. Is that normal or did I make any error? ─ The Aafī (talk) 05:25, 7 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
I purged the page's cache and hit the translate button and it says, "Invalid value for parameter mcgroup.". What does that mean? ─ The Aafī (talk) 05:40, 7 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
You unfortunately meet a new bug. -- Pols12 (talk) 19:24, 7 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
@Pols12, I'm not sure if the bug still exists as I was able to translate the page right after waiting for sometime. Night time here and I'm heading to sleep. While encountering this issue, the languages tab would just get disappeared from the page but once the page is purged it comes back; if the page is opened again, the game begins again and again but then I didn't face the issue again. Else? Perhaps in morning once I get back on system. Best, ─ The Aafī on Mobile (talk) 19:40, 7 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Maybe a temporary issue… --Pols12 (talk) 20:51, 7 October 2022 (UTC)Reply

Translation request (OC/CRC appointments)

[edit]

Hi Pols12! I hope all is well. I was wondering if you had a moment to translate Wikimedia Foundation Legal department/Announcement/2023 OC and CRC appointments process? This is for outreach beginning 3 October 2022. It would be highly appreciated, though I understand if you don't have time. All the best, Xeno (WMF) (talk) 14:31, 30 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Done 🙂 -- Pols12 (talk) 21:11, 30 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks very much! Xeno (WMF) (talk) 15:04, 1 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
[edit]

Hi Pols12! First of all, thank you kindly for making the Human Rights Team's pages ready for translation. That is an huge help. I do have a question, however, how can I change the links (external) on a translated page? On the digital security resources page, for instance, I am currently attempting to translate the page (here) to German and for the German version I would like to add resource links in that language. While I am able to translate all the text, I am unable to change the links. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you so much :) KUrban (WMF) (talk) 02:42, 1 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

To facilitate translation work, we put multilingual URLs inside “translation variables” (tvar). E.g. https://digitalfirstaid.org automatically redirects to the appropriate translation, depending on user browser preferences, so we may put it inside tvar. In some other cases, the URL should differs depending on language, so we should not include it inside a tvar.
If I (or other translation admin) misused a tvar, you may remove it with an explanation in the edit summary: a translation admin will mark your changes for translation (but this can take several days). If this is urgent, you may ping translation admins on Meta_talk:Babylon or on their own talk pages.
Please note you can override a tvar with any content inside translation, as you did using "www.google.com" instead of $url (but www.google.com is not a valid URL, you need to write “http://” protocol).
In that page, please remove undesirable tvars (but keep in mind many URLs take the browser language into account), then I will mark your changes for translation. 🙂 -- Pols12 (talk) 13:50, 1 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for getting back to me so quickly and for the clarifications. In that case I would be in favour of removing all the URL tvars and adding the links manually - mainly because the links to resources will almost always differ. Unfortunately there is not website that covers all the languages. Thank you again so much for your time and efforts. KUrban (WMF) (talk) 05:09, 2 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
As a translator, I sometimes only write down “English” to notice the reader the link leads to an English page. Be that as it may, I have marked your tvar removals for translation, so already done translations must be updated if they have been using the tvar. Sorry for the inconvenience. Please tell me if you need further help. -- Pols12 (talk) 00:18, 3 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
No inconvenience at all, thank you kindly for doing this and being so open to help - much appreciated. :) KUrban (WMF) (talk) 08:03, 3 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

strange...

[edit]

Date appears very weird on Kashmiri_Wikimedians_User_Group/ks-arab and Deoband_Community_Wikimedia/ks-arab. This isn't however the case with Urdu versions. What is missing in the Kashmiri language that makes it so? ─ The Aafī (talk) 17:18, 1 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

This however appears normal on the mobile version as it should appear. ─ The Aafī on Mobile (talk) 18:52, 1 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
I don’t understand what date you speak about. Can you tell me the English date so I find it in the page?
The issue may come from {{Date}} template. Pols12 (talk) 00:27, 3 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Actually, I think that is because {{dir}} does not handle ks-arab language code. I am opening an edit request to fix that. Thank you for the report! -- Pols12 (talk) 00:45, 3 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

How?

[edit]

Hi @Pols12, how do we get the translated version of "in progress" like as here Template:WikiConference_India_2023/Header/ur. Thanks, ─ The Aafī (talk) 08:27, 20 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

@TheAafi, I have just migrated {{Inprogress}} from LangSwitch to Translate extension. You can now translate it safely on the template page. -- Pols12 (talk) 21:09, 21 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Translation of GLAM Glossary

[edit]

Hi! I've deleted the incomplete part of the GLAM GLossary (it will be added later). So can we add the translation code this way? Thanks! :D Sintegrity (talk) 00:52, 24 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

I find it a bit too big. I’m waiting for feebacks at Babel before marking the page for translation. Sorry for the inconvenience. -- Pols12 (talk) 16:25, 26 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Don't worry :D Thanks for the help.
As we are invinting the Open GLAM community to Wiki and most of them don't know how to edit or things like that... May we let at least a line before the terms with the link to another page where they can have some guideline on how to edit the glossary? Sintegrity (talk) 21:30, 26 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

CWIRP

[edit]

Hello Pols12, thank you for fixing the CWIRP page! I really needed an Translation Admin to fix the page a bit, since I modernised recently with automated statistics. :-)

One more request, could you please run FuzzyBot on the CWIRP's statistics page for each translation (because I also updated that page)? Thanks and have a good day!

P.S. if you want, you can update the French version of the CWIRP header. --S4b1nuz ᴇ.656(SMS) 14:55, 26 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Done I have tweaked internationalization syntax and wikifying (please note align attribute is obsolete and should not be used anymore, we should use style="text-align:" instead). -- Pols12 (talk) 16:35, 26 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thank you so much! Oops My bad, I didn't know that align is considered obsolete for the Wikitables... :-/ Thanks for your advice, I will keep that in my mind so that will not replace style="text-align:" next time :-)...
(I know tags like center, font and tt that are usually considered obsolete on the LintErrors and should be replaced with div class/style="text-align:", span style= and kbd/code as soon as possible.)
In this period, I updated the CWIRP page because it was made in 2012 and had some obsolete stuff, some sections I left out as it is ("Incubator" and "List of Wikipedias by sample of articles") because I don't really have ideas yet, you can add stuff/redesign the CWIRP page if you want at any time :-), the original creator is no longer active and the page has been left out with no updates.
One question, for the sections with no translations like Talk, News and Votings (the new one that I created) is there a possibility to display the header in another languages than English and not just in English (do I have to use the {{LangSwitch}} for this)?
Grazie e buona serata! / Merci et bonne soirée! --S4b1nuz ᴇ.656(SMS) 19:36, 26 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
On those pages, we cannot add a language bar, but we can transclude the templates in user interface language, using {{TNT|uselang={{int:lang}}}}. -- Pols12 (talk) 21:18, 26 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Help Request

[edit]

Hi Pols12, kindly help me to resolve an issue with the Home page & Community Processes of the Code for Africa Wikipedia In Residence Community, can you kindly create red links for both or you can just create a red link for only the Community Process page.

Also I am trying to add a blog tab to the list of tabs on the Code for Africa Climate Change Project but it seems that none is reflecting on the main page.Jwale2 (talk) 22:25, 7 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

I have added “/Community processes” and “/Blog” tabs in the header template. I hope that helps. 🙂 -- Pols12 (talk) 23:06, 7 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Pols12 thank you soo much, I am very elated of how you structured everything, this will really help a lot, but can't see the blog tab for Code for Africa Climate Change Project .
Please I want to take my skill in meta-pages creation and doing translation on meta-pages to another level, are there good resources out here and also what community can I join to learn more of this so that I can volunteer and support meta-pages, also are there consistent community meetings as well.Thank you Jwale2 (talk) 03:27, 8 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
Template:Code for Africa Climate Change Project is a translatable page, so each change has to be validated by a translation admin. This may take some time, but you can urge a translation admin (like me) pinging them or at Meta talk:Babylon. I have marked the page for translation, the Blog tab should now be visible.
I don’t know a central page or community, but I can provide you some links:

Marking Content Partnerships Hub/Software/Tool prioritization survey end 2022 for translation

[edit]

Hello @Pols12, thank you for taking the initiative to mark Content Partnerships Hub/Software/Tool prioritization survey end 2022 for translation. It can indeed be marked as such, so it's OK to remove the {{Draft}} template. I have received a Portuguese translation of the survey questions and will add that translation myself already. Much appreciated! Sandra Fauconnier (WMSE) (talk) 11:32, 12 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
