Sunday February 21 Strategic Wikimedia Affiliates Network meeting[edit]

The Strategic Wikimedia Affiliates Network (SWAN) is a developing forum for all Wikimedia movement affiliates to share ideas on the Wikimedia 2030 strategy process. It expands on the model of the All-Affiliates Brand Meeting to help lay some of the groundwork for a future Global Council.

Following up on the August, September, October, November, and January SWAN meetings and June's All-Affiliates Brand Meeting, as well as strategic and outreach topics of mutual concern to all affiliates, this month we are meeting on Sunday February 21, and you are all invited to RSVP here.


To help set priorities for the SWAN agenda, and also to help manage which global conversations should be a focus in general, we have set up and invite everyone to participate at this SWAN priorities form. Possible topics include Community Board seats, Interim Global Council, Strategy prioritization follow-up events, Branding, Universal Code of Conduct, Grant strategy, and WMF CEO search. That is a lot of things, which are most important to cover in our upcoming SWAN meeting?

Following the regular call, in SWAN after hours: Wikimedia Meet Jitsi social event with brainstorming for possible Nano Charter ideas, plus any other topics.

MassMessage[edit]

Hi! I would appreciate if you review MassMessage, especially the part about the links. On wmua:Обговорення:Вікімедіа Україна#UCoC Affiliates consultation report I see that you have attempted to link to some Meta-Wiki pages and use some Meta-Wiki templates in your message, but unfortunately all or some of those wikis do not exist in other wikis. Also I would personally prefer to avoid using URL shortener for what can be expressed with internal links. @Base: Hello! Thank you for bringing this to my attention, and I apologize that I don't quite take Affiliates that has its own wiki outside of Meta but listed on the delivery list into account. I will personally change the broken links one by one, as soon as possible. As for the URL shortener, I use Special:UrlShortener, which works fine and is an onwiki tool; but if you don't want pages affiliated with your Affiliate/project be tagged with the shortened URLs in the future, please let me know. Thank you! UrlShortener is a wonderful tool in some cases, mainly when you have to share the link outside, such as on social media, but I think I would not be alone in wanting to see where the link goes when it is used on wiki, so an internal link like [[interwiki-prefix:page]] works better (social media also commonly provide some form of link preview, so it is less of an issue there, but this is not the case on wiki pages). I might be picky in this one though, the main thing is for the links to be functional at all, so thank you again for committing to fix them! --Base (talk) 19:38, 28 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Dealing with translatable pages[edit]

Hello Ramzy, I notice this edit you made and want to explain why it was a poorly made edit (my apologies for repetition if someone already said this by now). I assume you have hot worked with translatable pages on Meta before, but you sure have noticed that they use additional wikimarkup. In order for a paragraph and/or list item to be recognised by Translate extension as translation unit it has to have a number: this is what  code is for. When you need to move a unit into another place on the page, you have to move it with this number – this way the translated versions of this unit will not be affected in any way. Each change to the page that has already been marked for translation and translated creates more work for translators, therefore one has to keep that in mind. In your edit this tranlstalion unit:  [[User:Oscar . (WMF)|Oscar Costero]]- Facilitation for Latin America region changed into this:  [[User:MNadzikiewicz (WMF)|Maciej Nadzikiewicz]]: Polish communities . If I were you I would have cut the whole list item about with Oscar (including unit number 43), pasted in in approproate position of the list, and then change the wording. This way even if the translated version of the page wasn't updated but translator immediately, at least the names would be correct. However with your edit you made translators to basically translate the whole list again which is unnecessary additional work. Ата ^(talk) 09:09, 4 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think you have to do anything with the page now or rewrite the list again. The more stable are the translatable pages, the better. You might want to read the help pages on Translate extension to understand how it works regardless whether you have translation admin right or not. The WMF's own CoC[edit]

Hi RamzyM_(WMF), in the chat, during the 18 September roundtable you cited Foundation Code of Conduct in response to my question The WMF has promoted the UCoC as a minimum standard, but has not adopted a CoC of its own that sets the highest standards for ethical behaviour of its employees. Why does the WMF only commit itself to the minimum standard? I was aware of the existence of the Wikimedia Foundation Code of Conduct, but I didn't think it exceeded the minimum standard set by the UCoC. I suspect that you don't really believe that it does either, but I appreciate that we needed to move the discussion along. But I question that the official position of the WMF is that the code you cited meets or exceeds the UCoC's minimum standard. It hasn't been updated in three years, and it still contains the phrase "It is also intended to provide guidance for volunteers". I'm still interested to know: Why does the WMF not have Code of Conduct for its employees that exceeds the standard set by the UCoC?
