FDC banners enabled by mistake?

I've just seen an FDC banner on en.wiki, but the community review period ended 5 days ago. Please disable. --Nemo 09:20, 5 November 2014 (UTC)

RFA

It's been over a week and a handful of people have given their opinion and vote. It doesn't look like this request is going to be successful as there is a great number of opposes. The request can be found here. Thanks! Eurodyne (talk) 20:38, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

Hello Glaisher and others, I want to make a request to have a Central Notice banner for Wikipedia readers survey in Pakistan. The banner should be up on English and Urdu Wikipedia from November 8th, until Nov 15th. 2014 and be shown to both logged-in and anonymous users. --Saqib (talk) 18:11, 7 November 2014 (UTC)

I think we need more details about this. Where is the survey hosted? Who designed it? Is it approved/reviewed/in collaboration with the Wikimedia Foundation Research Committee? I don't see it listed on Research:Projects... Snowolf How can I help? 18:18, 7 November 2014 (UTC)
@Saqib: Yes, as Snowolf said we need more information about this. See this archive page for previous requests for CN banners, for an example. --Glaisher (talk) 07:31, 8 November 2014 (UTC)
Sorry for late reply Snowolf and Glaisher. The survey is hosted on WMF Qualtrics account. It was initially designed by me and later Haitham Shamma and Edward Galvez from WMF Learning and Evaluation department work on it and approved it. The research page has been created at Research:Wikipedia Readership Survey Pakistan. --Saqib (talk) 10:38, 9 November 2014 (UTC)

A banner is required:

Please take our quick survey to share your experiences and help us improve Wikipedia for Pakistan."

--Saqib (talk) 14:31, 9 November 2014 (UTC)

Done After discussing with Saqib on IRC. campaign. banner (enwiki urwiki). Thanks for the translations. --Glaisher (talk) 15:24, 9 November 2014 (UTC)
Thanks Glaisher. --Saqib (talk) 15:39, 9 November 2014 (UTC)
Please PAUSE the banner as of now. The capacity to store maximum responses of survey is exceeding now. I've talk with Edward and Haitham at WMF and they will be able to fix the maximum responses capacity by morning Sans Francisco time (after 8 hours from now on). --Saqib (talk) 07:02, 10 November 2014 (UTC)
The survey has reached capacity and is now closed. Please remove the banner. Thanks! --EGalvez (WMF) (talk) 16:18, 11 November 2014 (UTC)

Request to restore access

Dear all,

A year ago I had to take the painful decision of resigning all my permissions across all Wikimedia Projects, included this one. The ground reason for that retirement was that I was suffering health issues which became more severe. Foreseeing that I will not have the time neither to contribute with the consistency, dedication and attitude I would like to I dropped all my permissions. Time would show a few months later that I was not mistaken in my expectations, and my health condition became worse; reaching a point where I almost passed away about 6 months ago. Fortunately today I can say that I'm recovered 80% or 90 %, and improving every day, so I am looking forward to resume old projects, such as Wikimedia. I do not foresee that this issues will ever happen again, but I can not promise because health is a so fragile, unpredictable and volatile thing that I prefer to leave the forecasts of health and life expectancy to others who know better... I prefer to think positively now and think this will not return. In fact, I feel much better as I said above.

I am aware that perhaps too much time has passed, and I would like to apologize in advance to the community for wasting their time if they find this request to be innapropiate; but insofar my resignation was entirely not controversial, considering the above mentioned reasons (which I consider serious) and the fact that some trusted users adviced me to post this; I would like to ask for the grace to be reallocated in my old local user groups I had before resignation: administrator, bureaucrat and checkuser.

Until my retirement, I was one of the most active functionaries of this project and I think I still can make a good use of the tools if they are regranted to me. I have not forgotten the commitment it means to have access to the tools: to use them for the benefit of the community and the project. I have found this days situations were having the tools would have helped me a lot.

I therefore hope that the community can still trust me and give me a new opportunity to serve faithfully and actively in the administrative side. I am at your disposal for any questions you want to ask, and I submit of course to the final decision made on this issue. So far, I just wanted to say that I have been restored access in the past when I had similar problems.

I also take this opportunity, whatever the outcome of this request is, to apologize to all users for which it could have offended or annoyed in the months before my departure. My problems obviously affected my mood, but it is no excuse not to be kind to people when they deserve it. I hope that this does not happen anymore and, again, I am certainly regretful for that.

Sorry for the long post and the typos.

Thank you for your time.

Kind regards,
— M 13:39, 18 November 2014 (UTC)

I’m more than happy that you didn’t pass away and that you found the way back to meta. I can confirm that MA was (at the very least) CU-wise the most active CU we had when he resigned and that it left a big hole here at that time. Even thought it’s been little more than one year since he resigned, I still totally trust him with all those tools and ’’’strongly support’’’ that he is given back all his duties! I’m very confident that this project will benefit when MA gets the whole toolset back. -Barras talk 13:52, 18 November 2014 (UTC)

Gracias por tus palabras Oscar, eres muy generoso. Esperemos que la salud no nos traicione de nuevo :-) Un abrazo, — M 15:16, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
I'm very happy to see you are back; however, since we have no rules about regranting adminship etc. after it was resigned/lost, I think it's best if you go through WM:RFA. --MF-W 23:23, 18 November 2014 (UTC)
Hi MF-W. It is true that there is no rule about regranting rights after resignation, however it has been a common practice on Meta as far as I remember to regrant them if the resignation was in good standing. Some examples: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. The community is of course free to discontinue this practice. Thanks for your comments. Best regards. — M 15:16, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
Being a crat isn't what it used to be after renaming was split off to global renamers; are you sure you still want that back? --Rschen7754 02:32, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
Hi Rschen7754. Thanks for your comment. I know that the burden of local bureaucrats have decreased a lot since global renaming finally arrived, and I am very glad of that. I think that I may still help with promotions at RfA, removing temporary admins. and managing the activity checks. I am willing not to request that bit back if the community feels there are enough users to do that job by now. My feeling about rights and activity has not changed :-) Best regards. — M 15:16, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
Like MF-W, glad you're back, but perhaps RFA is the best way to go about this. Ajraddatz (talk) 02:35, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
Hi Ajraddatz, I have replied to MW-W above. Thank you for commenting :-) Very best. — M 15:16, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
Strong support Strong support, per Barras. I'm glad that you're back again and this project would certainly benefit from it. Trijnsteltalk 15:29, 19 November 2014 (UTC)
As far as CU, I would have to express concern that there is no explicit allowing of regranting rights in either global or local policy, so to be consistent with what I (would have) said at Stewards'_noticeboard/Archives/2014-09#Request_for_return_of_Checkuser_right_after_period_of_poor_health, I think a new RFCU would be appropriate. --Rschen7754 03:20, 20 November 2014 (UTC)
  • I am very glad to hear that you're back and doing well, and I look forward to the projects benefitting from your help and expertise once more. However, I am unsure of whether Checkuser/Oversight/Steward rights can be restored without a new election taking place. I can understand how in cases of short absenses exceptions can be made, but as I discussed in the INeverCry case, which involved a shorter absence than yours, I think in your case we're well past the line. I think that no matter what consensus arises here, the community as well as myself personally will be more than glad to have you back, whether thru this thread or thru a full request. I do not hold any particular opinion on the two other groups that were requested, which would also be the ones handled by this board. I think that is in the hands of the Meta 'crats. Snowolf How can I help? 05:55, 21 November 2014 (UTC)
  • Given that there are some "precedents" in regranting local meta rights, and that I trust this user, I am restoring user's flag in meta.wiki (sysop+bureaucrat). For CU flag, I second the opinion that regranting this flag without an election is not advisable. Thank you for asking, M/ (talk) 18:27, 22 November 2014 (UTC)

Wikivoyage — Online edit-a-thon

Hello, I want to make a request to have a Central Notice banner for first ever Wikivoyage online edit-a-thon for Pakistan only. I' know its not appropriate to have for a banner in this case but this is bit important. Since last year I'm planning to publish a travel guide book on Pakistani largest city Karachi and for the purpose, I secured a sponsor as well who agreed to bear the cost of printing of guide book. But unfortunately, the content in our Karachi guide is not worth printing as of now. Its been a long year now and I see no local ever care to edit our article because of poor SEO of Wikivoyage. So before the sponsor slip out, I've decided to run an online edit-a-thon where people from Karachi could be brought to Wikivoyage and help us improve the guide. I've created an landing page for our edit-a-thon participants. --Saqib (talk) 17:08, 22 November 2014 (UTC)

Further, the banner will only be geo targeted for Karachi rather than whole Pakistan. --Saqib (talk) 17:16, 22 November 2014 (UTC)
No acknowledgment of my request until now. Recently, I contacted Jalexander-WMF. He said he don't have the time to make banners at the moment so I best reach out to volunteers here. He further mentioned that its not possible to geo target banner for Karachi only. Is there a way if I we put Karachi-IP addresses? Anyways. I am hoping to have response soon and would appreciate quick help. --Saqib (talk) 12:46, 25 November 2014 (UTC)

Help for Ido wiktionary

Hello! The Wiki is a jungle because it is very difficult to find a place where you can get an answer. I have already left a request for help at few places.

My problem is that I can’t log in since 21st November in Ido Wiktionary. I know that my user name and password are absolutely correct. I am the only sysop, so there is nobody now fighting against vandals. I created for temporary use new account [2] . Could somebody explain why my account is closed and the Wiktionary left open for undesirable deeds? Thanks. --Artomo (talk) 19:37, 24 November 2014 (UTC)

See phab:T75462. Do you use Firefox? Do you have the same problem with other browsers? --Stryn (talk) 20:26, 24 November 2014 (UTC)

I have Firefox and Safari, but this problem is connected to the Ido Wiktionary only. I can log in other Wikis using Firefox, including this Meta. Safari is there only as a part of Apple system in my computer and I do not use it regularly. This problem evolved in two phases: First I lost contact from my home and at the same time I could get contact at my working place. Then I lost the contact at my working place. I can even say it happened 21st November between 7:10 - 11:03 GMT. – I just tried to log in using Safari. Safari did not let me in the Ido Wikipedia but Firefox did. Does it seem that the problem is expanding to the next place? (P.S. Me voisimme jatkaa suomeksi, mutta yritetään käyttää englantia, jotta muutkin veikot voivat saada apua tästä.) --Artomo (talk) 07:14, 25 November 2014 (UTC)
