Translator, We need you![edit]

Dear Huji,

You have helped us in previous years with translations and for that we are most grateful. Now we turn towards the 2011/12 fundraiser. It may seem forever away, but work has already begun getting everything ready to go. This year we want to have landing pages covering as many countries in as many languages as possible.

Right now, we want to figure out who is interested in translating for the fundraiser. This year we're hoping to have more of a solidified "core" group of translators that we can count on to have work done by a few key dates, but we'd also welcome help from people who are willing to just help out when they can.

If you would be interested please take a look at this little sign-up survey and fill it out http://survey.wikimedia.org/index.php?sid=13638&newtest=Y&lang=en. With that we can start building a list of people and filling any gaps in the languages we serve.

Many Thanks

Huji 21:46, 20 August 2011 (UTC)

Huji 23:25, 21 September 2011 ‏(UTC)

MehdiTalk 05:56, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

{{#time:Y"/"W|{{CURRENTTIMESTAMP}} +1 day}}

{{#زمان:Y"/"W|Template:زمان‌یونیکسی +1 day}}

http://translatewiki.net/w/i.php?language=fa&module=words&title=Special%3AAdvancedTranslate

Americophile 01:19, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

Huji 12:38, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

Americophile 18:47, 15 October 2011 (UTC)
چنین گزینه‌ای نداریم. باید یک الگو بسازید مثلا به اسم {{ماه به لاتین}} که اسم فارسی را بگیرد اسم لاتین را برگرداند، بعد نتیجه {{CURRENTMONTHNAME}} را تحویل آن الگو بدهید: {{ماه به لاتین|{{CURRENTMONTHNAME}}}}

--Huji (talk) 17:32, 6 January 2013 (UTC)
--Huji (talk) 00:48, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

RE: Removing unnecessary access on yi.wikt[edit]

Hi, I am a bureaucrat (user Joystick) on Yiddish Wiktionary. Unfortunately, on Meta I have another username (Joystick.pl). I agree with you, that a number of people with sysop and bureaucrat access to yi.wikt is too large. In the past I tried to talk to these people but most of them did not reply to me and moreover they are not active users. Lately I have not have much time for Wiki, because I have been working on other projects of Free Culture. This is why I would prefer that someone else take care of it. Some of the people with sysop access do not know Yiddish language. They are owners of various bots and programmers who - from some reasons - got this access even before me. So it is possible to talk to them in English. I can help willingly but I cannot take care of it as a whole. Best, Joystick.pl (talk) 22:09, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

Can you please tell which sysops/bureaucrats know English there? Also, can you please tell me if there are any active sysops/bureaucrats on that project who actually know Yiddish? Huji (talk) 23:07, 6 January 2013 (UTC)

Global checkuser requested[edit]

Dear member of the Ombudsman Commission. Yesterday (July 18) I filed a formal complaint by sending an email to the OC (see here). I've been falsely accused of having a sockpuppet and, in spite of my requests, the checkusers at the Spanish Wikipedia keep on claiming I control Pelayo Calderón account. That's not true and, IMHO, the only way to clarify it is to perform a global checkuser verification in order to compare my alleged sockpuppet editions (AFAIK, all of them in the Spanish Wikipedia) with mine (mostly in commons, but also in wikidata and other wikipedias... possibly there are a few records of mine also in the Spanish Wikipedia). I'm perfectly aware of the expiration of logs and therefore I'd like to get a fast response, as it seems to be the only way to clean my name. I'd like to get, at least, an acknowledgement, as I haven't received any news after sending my email. If necessary, I can contact you by mail. Just let me know. Many thanks into advance --Discasto (talk) 21:33, 19 July 2015 (UTC) PS: I'm leaving this message to all the members of the OC. Sorry for the spam.

Dear User:Discasto, I am currently an advisory member of the OC; the OC has 7 members, plus 2 advisory members. The 7 members of the OC will respond to you via email, and the reminder on our talk pages was not necessary, although not harmful either. I wish you the best of luck, and advise you to continue the communication via email. Huji (talk) 01:05, 20 July 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, Thomas already contacted me via email and I'll follow your advice. Best regards and sorry for any inconvenience --Discasto (talk) 09:07, 20 July 2015 (UTC)

Please sign new Wikimedia confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information by 15 December[edit]

This is a message from the Wikimedia Foundation. Translations are available.

Wikimedia Foundation logo - vertical (2012-2016).svg

As you may know, the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees approved a new "Access to nonpublic information policy" on 25 April 2014 after a community consultation. The former policy has remained in place until the new policy could be implemented. That implementation work is now being done, and we are beginning the transition to the new policy.

An important part of that transition is helping volunteers like you sign the required confidentiality agreement. All Wikimedia volunteers with access to nonpublic information are required to sign this new agreement, and we have prepared some documentation to help you do so.

The Wikimedia Foundation is requiring that anyone with access to nonpublic information sign the new confidentiality agreement by 15 December 2015 (OTRS users have until 22 December 2015) to retain their access. You are receiving this email because you have access to nonpublic information and are required to sign the confidentiality agreement under the new policy.

Signing the confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information is conducted and tracked using Legalpad on Phabricator. The general confidentiality agreement is now ready, and the OTRS agreement will be ready after 22 September 2015. We have prepared a guide on Meta-Wiki to help you create your Phabricator account and sign the new agreement: Confidentiality agreement for nonpublic information/How to sign

If you have any questions or experience any problems while signing the new agreement, please visit this talk page or email me (gvarnum(_AT_)wikimedia.org). Again, please sign this confidentiality agreement by 15 December 2015 (OTRS users have until 22 December 2015) to retain your access to nonpublic information. If you do not wish to retain this access, please let me know and we will forward your request to the appropriate individuals.

Thank you,
Gregory Varnum (User:GVarnum-WMF), Wikimedia Foundation

2016 Community Wishlist Survey[edit]

Hi,

You’re getting this message because you participated in the 2015 Community Wishlist Survey and we want to make sure you don't miss it this year – or at least can make the conscious choice to ignore if it you want to. The 2015 survey decided what the Community Tech team should work on during 2016. It was also the focus of Wikimedia hackathons and work by other developers. You can see the status of wishes from the 2015 wishlist at 2015 Community Wishlist Survey/Results.

The 2016 Community Wishlist Survey is now open for wishes. You can create proposals until November 20. You will be able to vote on which wishes you think are best or most important between November 28 and December 12. /Johan (WMF) (talk) via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 11:17, 14 November 2016 (UTC)

Possibly deleted page on fa.wiki[edit]

Hi Huji – sorry you haven't heard from me in such a long time. I hope this message finds you well. We did an editathon with Muslim university students in Hamburg, Germany today, and we encouraged the participants to try to edit in their native languages. Two participants tried to translate the first paragraph of de:Haftbefehl (Rapper) into Farsi. Can you check whether that edit was successful? The edit may have been deleted by an admin for poor quality. It was made today at around 14.30 CET. The rapper's name means "arrest warrant" in English, so the article may also have been called "حکم بازداشت" or similar. Thank you, and warm regards, --Gnom (talk) Let's make Wikipedia green! 22:15, 4 November 2018 (UTC)

@Gnom: nice to hear from you! The article in question was created as fa:Haftbefehl (Rapper) (the title was not translated), and the text of the article was such a poor translation that it was deleted by User:Mardatanha (who is a local sysop), and I agree with his decision.
While I support your general idea of enticing people to edit in their native language, in this case, it doesn't seem like the person who created the page is a native Persian speaker. Either that, or they really don't care about proper writing, and I rather think the former is correct. Huji (talk) 05:14, 5 November 2018 (UTC)
Dear Huji, thank you for the quick reply. I totally understand. The two students who created the article are second-generation immigrants, so they probably never had any formal schooling in Farsi, although they speak the language at home. Do you think there is a way to salvage this in one way or another, since it was only a few sentences long? Maybe I can reach out to a Farsi editor with an interest in the topic? Thanks, --Gnom (talk) Let's make Wikipedia green! 09:05, 5 November 2018 (UTC)
@Gnom: what is the end goal here? If it is just to have that article in Persian, I can translate it myself for you.
By the way, in English, that language is called "Persian", not "Farsi". Just like the other language is called "French", not "français". Huji (talk) 06:55, 6 November 2018 (UTC)
Hi Huji, I was trying to understand if the article could be somehow be salvaged. If you have time to write maybe five sentences to create a short stub, that would really be great! Thanks, --Gnom (talk) Let's make Wikipedia green!
@Gnom: wish granted! See fa:آیکوت آنهان. Sorry for the delay Huji (talk) 22:56, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
That's so cool, thank you! --Gnom (talk) Let's make Wikipedia green! 23:00, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

Open proxies--ISP range finder[edit]

Hello Huji. I didn't want to spam the CU list about this, but I understand that fa.wiki is working on getting the open proxy problem under control, so I thought you and Mensis Mirabilis may find this other tool by User:SQL useful: ISP range finder. It allows you to search by ISP name or ASN and it will list out every range of an ISP and provide helpful links for you to block. On en.wiki the links are preset to our standard block settings for open proxies: 1 year hard block. I find it very useful because anytime I find an open proxy via CheckUser, I can block the entire ISP/VPN provider and not just the range that I find. If you have any questions about it's use, please feel free to reach out to me. TonyBallioni (talk) 05:26, 7 July 2019 (UTC)

Hi TonyBallioni! That tool uses Maxmind, which is exactly what we will be using in the tool Mensis and I are working on. But thanks for the message. Huji (talk) 21:35, 7 July 2019 (UTC)
TonyBallioni, thanks for the shoutout!
Huji, I don't know if you're using PHP or not, but another way to go, if you know the ASN is:
function getASN( $asn ) {
	$v4 = shell_exec( "whois -h whois.radb.net '!gas$asn'" );
	$v6 = shell_exec( "whois -h whois.radb.net '!6as$asn'" );
	$v4 = strstr( $v4, "\n" );
	$v6 = strstr( $v6, "\n" );
	$v4 = str_replace( array( "\n", "\r" ), "", $v4 );
	$v6 = str_replace( array( "\n", "\r" ), "", $v6 );
	$ranges = "$v4 $v6";
	$ranges = explode( " ", $ranges );
	$c_ranges = array();
	foreach( $ranges as $range ) {
		$lastchar = substr( $range, -1 );
		if( ctype_alpha( $lastchar ) ) {
			$range = substr( $range, 0, -1 );
		}
		array_push( $c_ranges, $range );
	}
	return( $c_ranges );
}
That will output every range associated with that ASN. It's a little heavy handed, so when I use that function, I normally will sanitize the output (e.g. if I know I'm looking for "DigitalOcean", I will check the whois for an IP in the range for strlower("DigitalOcean") vs strtolower($whois). This can get things that Maxmind misses. The ASN for an IP can be had using the API on the whois tool. If there's any help I can be, please feel free to ask. SQLQuery me! 23:26, 7 July 2019 (UTC)
@SQL: that is a reasonable strategy, but I am not certain it is an allowed use of WHOIS services. If we were to take this route, it'd be reasonable to at least cache the results in some DB or JSON file for 30 days (WHOIS data rarely changes more frequently than that). But MaxMind's data is quite accurate and using it will take care of all the ToU's applicable, so I prefer using that over manually dealing with WHOIS data and caching. Huji (talk) 01:51, 8 July 2019 (UTC)
@SQL: to close the loop on this, I wanted to share the latest version of our code with you at https://github.com/PersianWikipedia/fawikibot/blob/master/HujiBot/findproxy.py
The WHOIS part is handled using existing Python libraries, and the output is saved to fa:User:Mensis Mirabilis/کشف پروکسی for now. We deliberately exclude IPs from Iran (because, at least on fawiki, they never are proxies).
We will be further validating this code and running it on a daily basis, and taking action on the proxy IPs discovered this way. We will also see how this impacts the LTAs on fawiki, as well as the rate of IP vandalisms.
If this works out well, it might be a good idea to expand it beyond fawiki (and potentially ask for grant money to purchase commercial licenses from the services used). Huji (talk) 01:50, 12 July 2019 (UTC)

The preceding unsigned comment was added by Beebetaxes (talk) 19:30, 30 October 2019

Huji (talk) 00:06, 31 October 2019 (UTC)

Ahmadtalk 16:13, 31 October 2019 (UTC)

Installing MoreMenu on fawiki[edit]

Hey Huji! I tried to message you on fawiki but AbuseFilter stopped me :) Anyway, I am the author of MoreMenu. I noticed there is a very old version of it installed on fawiki at fa:MediaWiki:Gadget-dropdown-menus.js. The code is commented out but there are still 1,452 users with it enabled. Would you be willing to help get the new version installed? It lives here on Meta, so fawiki will get updates and bug fixes automatically. It is also extendable and works in all skins. First thing's first, though... I need translations! If you'd like to help, please review MediaWiki:Gadget-MoreMenu.messages.fa.js and provide the translations on the talk page. Once that's done, I can give you step-by-step instructions on how to install it. If you are busy, no worries, there are others I can contact. Many thanks and hope all is well, MusikAnimal talk 03:43, 1 December 2019 (UTC)

I saved the translations onto the talk page. Huji (talk) 18:40, 1 December 2019 (UTC)
Thanks! I merged them in before noticing the JS editor here complained about some spacing that wouldn't be shown in some browsers. I can't tell if those were in fact meant to be spaces, or if you intentionally added these characters in. See Special:Diff/19603982. If I need to revert or remove those spaces, just let me know.

After that's sorted out, we are ready to deploy the new MoreMenu! Instructions can be found at MoreMenu/Migration#fa.wikipedia. Thanks, MusikAnimal talk 02:31, 2 December 2019 (UTC)

@MusikAnimal: You need to revert that. Those spaces are zero-width nonjoiner characters used in Persian language. Sadly, our JS editor hates them (possibly because some super old browsers do not support them). But we have been using it on our fawiki code for ages and had no user complaints because all modern (or even semi-modern) browsers support ZWNJ in JS code. Huji (talk) 14:19, 2 December 2019 (UTC)
Got it, thanks for the explanation! I've restored the ZWNJs. MusikAnimal talk 16:57, 2 December 2019 (UTC)
@MusikAnimal: before doing the migration, I enabled the old gadget for myself so I have a point of reference as to how things should look like. Well, low and behold, after I enabled it there was no change to my screen. I think I was supposed to see a dropdown arrow to the left of the search bar, but I didn't see it. It is possible the old code had stopped working and no one had reported it. :/
Next, I enabled the new version just for myself through my own personal JS, and it looked great.
Next, I removed it from my own JS, and I also made sure to turn off the gadget from Preferences. Then I only updated the gadget definitions. Here a problem occurred: some undesirable space was added to the right of the "more" tab in #p-views. I ended up commenting out the CSS rule that adds that space (see fa:MediaWiki:Gadget-dropdown-menus-pagestyles.css). Note that this occurred without me having enabled the gadget. I thought the point of "peers" in RL was they would only be loaded if the pertinent gadget is loaded, no?
At any rate, I updated the local Gadget page to simply reference what is on Meta, and then enabled it again for myself via Special:Preferences. Everything looked great, and the culprit CSS rule (which, as you recall, was disabled by me) did not seem to be necessary. Maybe it is an RTL thing?
I updated MoreMenu/Migration#fa.wikipedia indicating what was done. Huji (talk) 01:39, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
The spacing is to prevent #p-views from "jumping" as MoreMenu loads. See MoreMenu#Peer gadget for more. I can't explain why these styles were applied with the gadget disabled. That should definitely not happen, and I'm not able to reproduce this issue. Anyway yes, the padding-right in that CSS should be padding-left in RTL. I think the other rule is fine as-is. Can you try correcting the CSS and seeing if the pagestyles make sense, then? If it still looks off, then you can do without them. Indeed, they are not necessary. Thanks for your help, MusikAnimal talk 02:22, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
One more thing... could you update fa:MediaWiki:Gadget-dropdown-menus to link to [[meta:MoreMenu]], and remove the link to the outdated screenshot? That should do it. Thanks again, MusikAnimal talk 02:29, 3 December 2019 (UTC)
