RfC: proposal to rearranging meta translations-related pages

I apologize for my poor english. Well, I have drafted a report of the pages related with translation, here on meta and I have thought to some modifications at them. Now most of them are confusing, contain old and deprecated stuff, and so on. You can find the report here.

A draft of proposal, substantially, would consist on this roadmap:

  • Deleting or archiving the actual translation requests page and its i18n pages, in order to replacing it with the dynamic list now under translations page (we can effectively move it, to keep its history correctly). Next, we should include in that page a section for local requests (now located at this location, but I'd suggest to move it to another location, because the template and the rest of its subpages are obsolete).
  • Archiving the old stuff now present in Babylon. Removing the Babylon chat room section (we already have Meta:Babel for discussions). The requests from communities, as I have said above, would be embedded in the new translation request page. Next I think that we can build a portal/noticeboard merging what remains of Babylon and the actual head of the translations page. I'd suggest to keeping Babylon as its name.
  • Deleting the Template:Translation requests pages because they are obsolete.

Each step would be discussed and applied taking in account the incoming links of each page. I ask everyone to review and comment the proposal, to make his own remarks and eventually suggest his own ideas. Greetings. --Massimiliano 13:04, 30 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Sounds good to me. Anyone who writes a list as neat as this one has probably got the right idea. ;-)
Seriously, though, the pages relating translation can be very confusing, especially for newbies, so a bit of spring (autumn!) cleaning is a good thing.
Arria Belli 14:42, 1 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Basically looks nice to me. Let me summarize your proposals to see if I understand your ideas rightly
  • We have one request page (Translations) and one notice board (Babylon).
  • General discussions go to here, Meta:Babel.
  • Others (TR/its i19n pages/subsidiary templates) obsolete and hence to be deleted.

One thought: TR could be archived (it is genuinely a portal page, so no confusion) or redirect to Translations page: or just once delete TR and move the current Translations to the place TR has occupied. --Aphaia 15:39, 1 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes, TR could be archived. My idea was to archiving TR and moving under that title (it would be more appropriate) the translations page. Then we should copy the part I've recently added to translations into the Babylon. So we won't have a page titled translations anymore. Maybe it could be redirected to the Babylon. But I just realized I misunderstood the use of Meta:Babel. I thought, erroneously, that it was dedicated to discussions about translations, but I realize now that it's dedicated to general metawiki-related discussions. So, now the question is: do we need a separated place to discuss about translations-related issues? My thought is "yes", but I think it should be separated from the portal/noticeboard. If we need a page for discussions and if we want to use Babylon as a portal/noticeboard we need to create a new page: well, where to put it? Or we don't need it? --Massimiliano 01:13, 2 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ah now I understand your idea about Babel/Babylon issue. I thought you would like to delete its chatting space, because it is inactive and could be merged to Babel. Perhaps we just could use Talk:Babylon for chatting? Many WikiProjects use their talk page for their discussions of various topics as well as how to manage the page design, or even more. --Aphaia 08:51, 2 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Excuse me if what I wrote was not clear. I thought to delete the Babylon chatting space and merge it with Babel because I believed Babel was a translations-related discussion page, but I've just realized that it's a general discussion page. So, I asked where to put a space for discussions about translations. I agree with your idea to use the Babylon talk for this purpose. Well, I propose to coordinate all the proposed changes there: can I archive the actual Talk:Babylon and start there a new page? --Massimiliano 09:26, 2 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Or re-structuring of Meta:Babylon/archives, separate them into two: Portal archive and Chat archive. The curent talk is quite old, so safely archived in my opinion. --Aphaia 10:02, 2 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Here we go

[edit]

I have just archived the old pages that you can find under /Archives. I pasted above the previous discussion. We can continue it here now we have a dedicated place. --Massimiliano 01:08, 3 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

[Off topic] Name change (from Meta:Babylon)

[edit]

I've registered myself in MANY MANY languages of Wikipedia under the name Edmundkh. Can anyone who know the languages please help me to contact a local bureaucrat, ask them to change my name to EdmundEzekielMahmudIsa? Thanks a lot! Please leave me a message in the English Wikipedia.
REASON FOR NAME CHANGE INSTEAD OF NEW USER ACCOUNT: I'd like to give away my old name. Languages:

w:ja: 利用者:Edmundkh w:ko: 사용자:Edmundkh --Edmund the King of the Woods! 02:21, 12 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'm afraid you submitted your request to the wrong place. It should have gone to Requests for username changes? Also please note, if those wikis, like Polish or Swedish, have their own bureaucrats, your request here on meta won't be fulfilled. --Aphaia 08:22, 12 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

But the problem is, I DON'T UNDERSTAND those languages!! Furthermore, nowadays I'm not free... As I said, please HELP me to CONTACT the bureaucrats. --Edmund the King of the Woods! 18:19, 13 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Ah now I understand ... you intend to submit "requests for translation" for your sake? So it makes a sense ...
You could however bet the possibility they could also understand English. It has not bad odds in my experience. More practically you may want to wait for SUL ... --Aphaia 18:48, 13 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Who knows when the single login or unified login will launch! There were technical problems that caused it to fail to launch. And about contacting the bureaucrats, I'm afraid I don't know the word "bureaucrat" in those languages. Some of them may have an embassy, but I'm afraid that the embassy is not functioning, just like the one in the Malay Wikipedia. --Edmund the King of the Woods! 19:08, 15 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Can anyone who knows Korean please take me to the right place to change my name in the Korean Wikipedia!!?? I've contacted ALL THE BUREAUCRATS but no one answer me, even though I know they are active!!!! WHAT'S WRONG WITH THEM!!?? They're really REALLY BUREAUCRATS, there's BUREAUCRACY!! I know they know English!! Sorry if you think I'm rude here, but I'm JUST TOO ANGRY!!!! :-@ --Edmund the King of the Woods! 09:41, 24 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Bug? (from Meta:Babylon Chat Room)

[edit]

From Talk:Translation requests/Requirements for future chapters

There should be an hidden bug in the code behind the managing of the creation and categorization of the pages of this translation request.

The box generated by the appropriate template among the ones listed in the Translations/status page, do not appear on top of the page, the page is not categorized in the appropriate category as, for example, Category:Translations it, and the page do not came up in Translations/Finalizing requests even if the translation is marked as translated. -- AnyFile 13:32, 26 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for bringing it up. I am afraid it is not a particular problem on this request, but general, so I'll move this discussion to Babylon, for further discussion. Thanks. --Aphaia 15:10, 26 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

I also have some questions about the renaming procedure during the translation process, that I have wrote on Talk:Translations#Question about translation of the title of the page . -- AnyFile 18:32, 26 August 2007 (UTC)Reply
It's been a long time since I last had a look at "Zocky's machine", but Translation requests/WMF/Audit charter/fr created a few days ago seems to be inserted into the right category. Teofilo 00:41, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
I have solved the problem which resulted from unproper use of the status page. diff. Aphaia, you are not supposed to write comments in the status page. The status page should be edited only to change a single word after each "=" sign after each language code, like "en = finished". Any "creative use" of the status page might result in a bug. Teofilo 01:37, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Thanks, I'll take care of that. On the other hand, we still need a way to inform working translators update news. Do you have any good substitute? --Aphaia 12:19, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
Done I have added a new "edit comment" link at the top of every translation page. For the time being, an error message is displayed which enjoins you to remove comments from the "status" page and to use the "comment" page instead. You can list all pages with such an error message here. Teofilo 12:35, 7 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Request : Please

  1. change If none of the above values fits your situation, simply enter a comment, eg.: |da = Your comment into Please use no other word than "wait", "created", "started", "translated", "copyedited", "updated", "finished", or "published" even if these words do not fit exacty your situation
  2. correct "valuse" wich is a misspell of "values"

in Translations/constructor/status. I can't do it myself as this page is protected. Teofilo 12:57, 7 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

How do you think? --Aphaia 12:24, 6 set 2007

It would be better than the current page, surely. But the fact is that the page still contains old and obsolete stuff. I think that translations should be moved there and replacing that page, as I proposed before. IMHO we could start thinking how to archive or the actual TR page and its localisations, in order to move T under TR. I'm actually working on the Babylon renewal. --Massimiliano 22:30, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
For preparing (near future) removal/archiving, TR part was substituted. I think the pages linked from [English] TR don't contain so much old information - I reorganized the page just a half year before. Other languages might be obsolate, except some languages, and they are better to turn to redirect. As for archiving, unless our interest is limited to keep its structures and only, I think the template parts have to been kept too, since the past requests can be found only in this part. --Aphaia 22:36, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply
I apologize: I didn't see the changes to the TR page. But what is now the TR page? It seems very redundant with translations. I was thinking to put such an index on Babylon, that should become the central page for translations, with all the links and references we need/want. Then we could have a page entirely dedicated to requests (the actual T, without the head). In the meantime, the modification you have proposed above it's ok for me. --Massimiliano 23:18, 6 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

New Babylon

[edit]

I re-structured our Babylon. It's not perfect but it's at least a starting point. Feel free to improve it as you desire! --Massimiliano 00:24, 7 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, it looks nicer. I love it :) --Aphaia 13:48, 8 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

This is the comment previously written by Aphaia in Translation requests/Requirements for future chapters/status and moved by me to this new "comment" page for computer code reasons.

Actually we have at least three English/other language glossaries

which suggest translations for "chapter" in these languages :

  • (fr) French Français : chapitre
  • (ja) Japanese 日本語 : 地域支部
  • (ru) Russian Русский : Местные отделения

I also do not quite agree with the "proper names are better kept untranslated" statement. We say "China" or "Japan" in English, even though these are proper names and translations (of respectively "Zhonguo" and "Nihon"). Teofilo 13:25, 7 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi, thank you for bringing it up. My explanation: the notice "do not translate" is not my own idea, but rather I added it on behalf of Delphine who are responsible for chapters coordination. It arose when she reviewed French translation version: she didn't like the translation "chapitre", if I recall correctly. She was troubled with bad translations, so she prefer to keep it English to a translated word.
I understand her reason but on the other hand, as Japanese speaker, I think it doesn't apply for every language. As you noted, Teofilo, Japanese have used 地域支部 for a long time. I confess it was I who had begun to use this word in the earliest days, and now feel it as a bad translation. On the other hand, I am not sure if mere transliteration works for the ordinary Japanese audience. Rather I prefer to put two word together, say translation (original) - so it may reduce somehow misunderstanding. But it is my personal idea. --Aphaia 15:27, 7 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

TR renewal

[edit]

As proposed by Massimiliano (see the above), I moved "Translations" with auto-generated request lists to Translation requests. I think this move unproblematic, since no opposition has come since his proposal, and the content of former TR is now completely integrated to new Babylon top menu.

As consequence of this move,

There are many links to Translations, close to 400 ([all links]), and I am not sure if we need to fix it. On the other hand, most of links to Translation requests and its shortcut TR seem to have been made when the page contained lists of translation requests, so I think this move wouldn't affect those exisiting links.

As far as I notice, no red link is created due to this move. If you find them, please fix it. Cheers, --Aphaia 06:07, 9 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Help requesting spanish translations

[edit]

Hi, first of all sorry for my english. :) Well, I'm working in the creation of Wikimedia España and I wanted to translate some pages with information about chapters creation but I can't made the corresponding translation request or templates for it. How can I put a multilingual bar to make translations to spanish to this documents?. What steps should I do?. For example, I want to start to translate this document.... Thanks!!. --Elisardojm 16:10, 9 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

please get an English teacher go over the drafts before you put them out for translaters

[edit]

There are economies of information packaging, of knowledge, that you find in languages.[1]

  1. What does it mean?
  2. Is it a grammatically correct sentence?

Badly written drafts are hardly translatable. It is hard enough to carry over the idioms and accidental equivocations in a language ("free encyclopedia" has plagued us since primeval times). It is impossible to carry over mistakes. Hillgentleman 15:46, 23 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

You're not the only one to have trouble with that sentence : the French translator merely translated : Il y a des connaissances importantes dans les langues[2] (Some important amounts of knowledge lie in languages). This is not a very accurate translation. Teofilo 16:12, 23 October 2007 (UTC)Reply
The German translator has put it that way : „Es gibt Wege, Informationen über Wissen zu verpacken, die man dann in Sprachen finden kann : (There are ways to pack knowledge information, which we can find in languages). Teofilo 16:18, 23 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

categories for translated pages

[edit]

It is wasteful to be translating similar pages again and again. I propose that a category be added to every translated pages. For example, add category:YUE to Fundraising 2007/Landing page testimonials/Translations/yue. Hillgentleman 13:46, 24 October 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hi, there are many translations but not yet proofread, hence not uploaded to the Foundation websites. There we find only five languages now ... we can make sure the visitors get a good translation, but we cannot see about the language we cannot speak. So the proofreading is very important -- we wouldn't like to make our donors feel deceived, would we?

You can help to finish your favorite language version(s) at Fundraising 2007/Fundraising FAQ/Translation. There are many language version which wait for your last brush stroke. Thanks :) --Aphaia 07:10, 3 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Interesting poem translating page

[edit]

Hello all! There's this interesting poem translation page. It's interesting as it has the same poem in different languages and this can be used to depict language differences on articles on wikipedia. It's very incomplete, but we can find it on english, spanish, french, italian, deutsch and basque (the original language). Do you thing it could be interesting? ---Theklan 01:28, 24 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

If you need any help, visit us on IRC at #wikimedia-translationconnect, respond here, or leave a message on my talk page. Cbrown1023 talk 05:35, 29 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
