Duolingo

Is it possible that en:Duolingo will be able to help with Wikimedia translations? It's creator, Luis von Ahn, claims that it would help a lot.. has there been a discussion about what Wikimedia will do, once Duolingo is released to the general public? Will you be ready? 24.84.9.97 19:28, 14 January 2012 (UTC)

Translation tools workshop: pick your preferred time to participate

I'm planning to give a Translation tools workshop in about two weeks. If you want to learn more about the special pages Special:PageTranslation, Special:Translate, Special:LanguageStats, Special:Translations and Special:MessageGroupStats, go to Translation tools workshop and read up! Thanks. --Siebrand 23:05, 12 January 2012 (UTC)

FYI: the workshop will be held on 2011-01-28 20:00 UTC. For other time zones, see: http://hexm.de/dn. --Siebrand 23:42, 22 January 2012 (UTC)

Links to meta from central notices

There used to be links added to central notices, to the meta translation pages, so that it was easy for wiki users to translate or correct the translation of any central notices that popped up on their wiki. But they aren't on the Wikimania central notice. Please can we have these back. Lloffiwr 19:38, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

Short notice for translators

A week's notice for translation by volunteers (as happened with Wikimania 2012 notices) is not really helping to build goodwill with your volunteers - at least not with me. Please give us more time to translate. Lloffiwr 19:55, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

I totally agree with this, a little bit more time would be better. - Kthoelen 23:08, 4 February 2012 (UTC)

stqwiki has text error in preferences

w:stq:Spezial:Einstellungen#mw-prefsection-editing has some broken formatting that needs fixing in the local language, all fine in English. — billinghurst sDrewth 13:37, 30 April 2012 (UTC)

How to augment an existing source

Is there a pointer to a page about how to correctly augment a source page with additional content. The page in question are Wikidata/Glossary, and the diff that should be included are this one. — John Erling Blad (WMDE) (talk) 11:45, 12 May 2012 (UTC)

Preferences at crhwiki

In the native language, the page crh:Mahsus:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing has formatting issues. It would be great if someone would have a look at fix the formatting. Thanks. — billinghurst sDrewth 06:48, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

Russia English Translator requested

Greetings, I am Orschstaffer, a school project, interest in collaborating with Russia Wikipedia (and others) in a school project, further developed into a sister classroom event where together we improve the related article (the Classroom Assignment) to the goal set at Featured Article. I am currently improvising some classroom assignments for a science experiment which prepares a red eyed tree frog for dissection at Wikiversity. I am also requesting help with Babel templates to identify my linguist limitations, and templates which allow readers to select the language they prefer to read an article in. Could someone please tell me how this is done. Example: I write an article in English, how many languages could it be translated to? and by what means?Orschstaffer (talk) 20:55, 29 June 2012 (UTC)

Comparing wmf:Terms of Use with wmf:Terms of Use/de I found a mistake in section 7. Licensing of Content.

  • Between some paragraphs, there is a greater distance probably caused by empty lines.
  • There is an empty subsection b. Therefore the subsections are counted from a to i whereas the English version is counted from a to h.

Using Special:Translate I can't find out the reasons for these mistakes. -- Juetho (talk) 09:16, 20 July 2012 (UTC)

Hello Juetho. Please check here if you're able there to find the mistake. Once corrected, somebody will push the changes into the WMF-wiki. Regards, — MA (audiencia) 10:47, 20 July 2012 (UTC)
Unfortunately, that's the same situation. I tried nearly the same page (taction=translate instead of taction=proofread) and didn't find any empty line or empty subsection. -- Juetho (talk) 14:33, 20 July 2012 (UTC)
For what I can see the translation at Terms of use/de seems to be done correctly. However people probably made a bad copy/paste when moving it to the Foundation Wiki. I'll ask somebody with access there for an fix. Regards. — MA (audiencia) 08:11, 21 July 2012 (UTC)
I've fixed a wrong closing tag and deleted some br-tags. --Alice Wiegand (talk) 12:09, 21 July 2012 (UTC)
Thank you, now it's OK. I wonder where the mistakes occurred: in the translation pages or by moving to the Foundation wiki? -- Jürgen 13:30, 21 July 2012 (UTC)

Translation

Hi... I know kannada. but nowhere could i find the option. kannada( spoken in karnataka, INDIA) is my native tongue & i can speak Hindi and English with a little fluency.— The preceding unsigned comment was added by Pavan Halapeti (talk) 10:30, 12 apr 2012 (UTC)

Replacing strings with accented vowels in French

Hi, Is there a way to replace, automatically, strings with accented vowels, in messages already translated in French, before proofreading ? Thanks Cquoi (talk) 18:59, 24 August 2012 (UTC)

I'm not sure I understand the question, can you give me an example? Thanks, Nemo 12:35, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

Links Special:MyLanguage

I reviewed the translation into French of Grants:Index and there are a few links prefixed by [[Special:MyLanguage/Grants:Index#id-section|...]]. Although it could first be thought as a good idea, particularly for the English page (~international), I find it is a bad practice in the translated pages (and probably even in English):

  • when you click on a such link, the browser reloads the page
  • more importantly, if you are not connected (so your language is supposed to be English) or if you misconfigured your language in the preferences or if you read a page in another language, and you click on a such link, you go to another language version of the page instead of going to the section of the current page (e.g. you are not connected, you read the page in Korean, you click on a such link, and you go to the English page).

I replaced these links in the French version by [[#id-section|...]], and I found this practice should be globally avoided for these type of links leading to a specific section of the page.

Sure, you're right. Feel free to update mw:Help:Extension:Translate/Page translation administration if this is not clear enough, and to point people to such documentations from here. --Nemo 12:34, 3 September 2012 (UTC)

Expert needed for translation of financial details/technical terms

Hello, I am currently helping to translate Fundraising 2012/Translation/Donor information pages into German. Just like last year, there is the problem that the text contains some financial details and terms that are specific to the United States. I don’t know how to translate e.g. "virtual card", "CVV" and "debit card" into German. Using the same expressions or just translating the words doesn’t really make sense, because the payment system in Germany is different (and where it isn’t different, you still have to use the exact technical term).
So whom should I address about this? Does Wikimedia have some financial expert who proofreads these parts or will the text just get published regardless, like in 2011? Best regards -- Zwaailicht (talk) 09:21, 8 September 2012 (UTC)

Has been settled. Thanks -- Zwaailicht (talk) 14:10, 9 September 2012 (UTC)

Permission Problem with Group translate-workflow-states

When trying to translate the few words in the list:

I get an error message each, saying that I was not allowed to do so. --Purodha Blissenbach (talk) 22:41, 28 July 2012 (UTC)

Hi there! Yes, this is is known issue with the interface at present because the translation workflow states are in the MediaWiki: namespace which means that they can only be edited by local Meta-Wiki admins. If you could translate each of the phrases, either here or by leaving a message on my talk page, I'd be more than happy to copy them across for you. I will also chase up the Localisation team to ask if they have found a way to fix this unfortunate problem. Best, The Helpful One 01:03, 29 July 2012 (UTC)
There's no solution I'm aware of, except mw:Help:Extension:Translate/Unstructured element translation of course. --Nemo 09:38, 29 July 2012 (UTC)

Subscription delivery to my User talk

Moved from User talk:Translation Notification Bot

Where could I unsubscribe from that? --eugrus (talk) 18:52, 27 September 2012 (UTC)

Actually there's no unsuscribe button (although it has been requested). My suggestion would be to go to Special:TranslatorSignup and uncheck all the checkboxes then save. That'd be enough IMHO to stop the notification system from sending messages to you. Please tell me if that worked. Regards. -- MarcoAurelio (talk) 18:54, 27 September 2012 (UTC)
Thank you! --eugrus (talk) 15:52, 1 October 2012 (UTC)

French translation of the current sitenotice

Hello,
Yesterday I tried to "help with translations" as asked on every Wikimedia project. But my proposal has remained dead letter. Should it be too late? Or not the right place to do it? Thanks for your explanations. At least for the future. Regards, Wikinade (talk) 14:36, 17 October 2012 (UTC)

You appear to have marked the translation status of the FDC portal/Proposals/CentralNotice as "published". I think this is a mistake, as the translation administrators look out for messages which are marked "ready". The translation administrators are the ones who publish and then change the status to "published". If they see the status "published" they might assume that it has already been published (I'm not a translation administrator, just a fellow translator, so I might be wrong). We only had a day's notice to translate this central notice, which really isn't long enough. Anyway, if you join the translators-l list, you can request that a translation be published there. It seems to work a lot quicker than requesting on this page. Lloffiwr (talk) 19:07, 18 October 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for your answer. But no thanks for the proposal of joining the mailing list. It's not wiki-spirit enough for me. I knew the message was already published. It was the reason why I though it was important to correct it. Tant pis. Best regards. Wikinade (talk) 07:47, 21 October 2012 (UTC)

Running the bot at ksh-wikipedia

Moved from User talk:Translation Notification Bot

Hi, before running your bot at the ksh-wikipedia would you be so kind an apply for a botflag at http://ksh.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Bot_Aandraach. Thanks for you support. --BBKurt (talk) 16:08, 28 October 2012 (UTC) (Admin at ksh-wikipedia)

While this account contains "bot" in the name, it is not a normal bot. This is part of a MediaWiki extension which only deliver notifications to the users that have requested to receive them. It is notwithstanding commanded by the Meta:Translation administrators. The account's owner is the MediaWiki itself. So it'll edit your wiki because some users have decided to receive such notifications on their usertalk page. Hope that this clarifies things. Do not hesistate to ask if you have further questions. Regards. -- MarcoAurelio (talk) 16:35, 28 October 2012 (UTC)

Edits on als:wp

Moved from User talk:Translation Notification Bot

The edits of the bot on alswiki seem to be very strange. The user who is informed by that way is no user of alswiki and does not speak (or translate) Alemannic. It seems that the subscription of that user is wrong. Please stop such wrong edits on alswiki. Thank you very much. Best regards. --212.184.28.44 12:06, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Skype

I have just tried clicking on the link "Wikimedia Translation Open Channel" on Meta:Babylon, and I go to an information page on Skype only. How do I connect with this channel? Lloffiwr (talk) 20:04, 20 October 2012 (UTC)

It should probably be removed, I think it's been unused for years. --Nemo 08:00, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

Admins can't mark pages as patrolled

It is really odd to know that admins can't mark pages as patrolled - which is simple enough to be done by an admin - without having any other flag. I was trying to mark these changes as patrolled as they are all fine, but it seems that I got no permission to do it. I wonder what is the rationale for such disallowance. Sorry if it has been pointed elsewhere. Thanks.—Teles «Talk ˱@ L C S˲» 07:14, 14 November 2012 (UTC)

You can't patrol it because you can't edit it. Edits to translation pages just reflect edits to translation units in Translations: namespace, so it doesn't make sense to patrol them. I guess it would be a valid feature request to ask for the patrolled flag to be transferred to the translation pages edits as well, if it's not been filed yet.
Of course, it's more useful to accept translations rather than to patrol them, but Translate must live with other systems as well. Nemo 08:00, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
Well, at least it is not a matter of permission then, but there should be a way to do it. There are diffs with the button "mark as patrolled" and the exclamation mark appears on RC. They are saying "check this edit, as it might be dangerous"; and "click me to mark as patrolled". If they are not working, they are just fooling us.—Teles «Talk ˱@ L C S˲» 08:24, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
Yes, as I said (not clearly enough) it's a bug. --Nemo 08:38, 14 November 2012 (UTC)
Someone else filed it for you: bugzilla:42162. --Nemo 21:06, 15 November 2012 (UTC)
Good. Thanks.—Teles «Talk to me ˱@ L C S˲» 05:22, 16 November 2012 (UTC)

$donationamount

As WikiMedia is an international site, I think it would be great not to use just the American Dollar for amounts of money. It can't be that hard to get a list of all currencies and adapt the indication of $donationamount and $donation amounts to the more common local site. Yes, I'm aware that en.wikipedia.org is visited by people from virtually everywhere, that fr.wikipedia.com will have a considerable number of non-French visitors (Swiss, Canadian,...), etc. But why not us at least the Euro on (most) European sites? RonnieV (talk) 08:44, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

You're encouraged to use the currency you feel most suitable, with the conversion you consider best. 5 $ is usually kept as 5 € in European languages. --Nemo 09:24, 20 November 2012 (UTC)

An other option would be not mentioning any currency, but e.g. "the price of a package of cigarettes", "a Big Mac" or whatever is known and consamused world wide.Kind regards, Klaas ‌ V 08:24, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

Yes, they're already doing do, using e.g. "a sandwitch". I suggest you to use Talk:Fundraising 2012/Translation for more suggestions. --Nemo 08:31, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

Hello, we urgently need help here. Thanks, Nemo 07:57, 25 November 2012 (UTC)

Annoying behaviour on mg.wiktionary

Moved from User talk:Translation Notification Bot

Hello everyone. This bot has notified me three times [1], [2], [3] on my wiki about the same translation (which is presently finished). Can someone fix this problem by checking if it has already notified the user on its talk page? Regards. Jagwar grrr... 19:18, 4 December 2012 (UTC)

This seems to be a current bug of the TranslationNotifications extension (also happening here on Meta, e.g. [4]). Regards, Tbayer (WMF) (talk) 22:08, 4 December 2012 (UTC)
Seems like it is at any wiki. I hope it stops soon, it starting to be real enjoying.--Jpfagerback (talk) 06:49, 5 December 2012 (UTC)
See now Bug 42715 - "Duplicate translation notifications are generated". Regards, Tbayer (WMF) (talk) 13:52, 5 December 2012 (UTC)

Here's what I just wrote to translators-l. An analysis of what happened was circulated a few days ago and now published: wikitech:TranslationNotifications issues 2012-12. It's fairly technical but it's supposed to help improve for the future, although so far it wasn't acted upon: «TL;DR: Changes in MW core exposed a bug in TranslationNotifications. The same bug is also present in other extensions. Many people participated in preventing further damage and fixing the issue. More work remains to be done.»
We still don't know if the translation notifications should now work or what's going to happen to the job queue, nor how/if todays' jobqueue disaster[5] may impact it. --Nemo 15:03, 11 December 2012 (UTC)
