User talk:Avery Jensen/Layout test page[edit]

Hi, Avery Jensen. Are you still working on that page? As it contains translation mark-up it ends up being listed on Special:PageTranslation --Base (talk) 01:46, 22 August 2017 (UTC)

@Base, the page is for ongoing projects. What does translation markup look like? Can I comment it out or use <nowiki> to keep it from being listed on the translation page? If you know how to disable it, please go ahead and do so. Avery Jensen (talk) 21:35, 23 August 2017 (UTC)
Hi, thanks for replying. Translation markup looks like <translate><!--T:37-->{{#translation:}} (instead of 37 can be any number, don't copypaste from here, I used full-width characters so that it doesn't work) If you don't intend to have that page translatable the easiest is just to remove it. Otherwise <translate> tags should perfectly be <nowiki>ed yep. --Base (talk) 21:59, 23 August 2017 (UTC)

Requesting your thoughts about editathon metrics[edit]

Hi Avery. I really appreciated your thoughtful comments on the Event Tool talk page. I've posted a new list of questions there, asking event organizers what you need in terms of metrics, since these are likely to be a focus for this project.

It would be a big help if you could offer some thoughts at your nearest opportunity. Thanks so much for your help! JMatazzoni (WMF) (talk) 21:13, 23 August 2018 (UTC)

JMatazzoni (WMF), I am following the discussion and will comment as I can, however as I have indicated there, we don't need anything in terms of metrics since we don't ask for grants. We are mostly trainers and already affiliated with WMDC and only did these small meetups because we were interested in collaborating with Arabic WP.
I consider my role on WP to be primarily an educator, but I found that when I did the Wikipedia + Libraries training (I was a "guide") the librarians were very interested in my experiences. See Wikimedia blog: "What can we glean from OCLC’s experience with library staff learning Wikipedia?"
My view of events is that there are 4 types: 1) Events with large organizations that already have resources, for instance Wikimedia DC has paid staff and already has a standard way of setting up events and pages, see list of meetups and our photos on Commons. 2) Online events that are run by people who (I think) have specialized technical skills, see wikidata:Wikidata:Europeana_Art_History_Challenge or Dr. Blofeld's The Africa Destubathon article destubbing contest. When those people leave, the knowledge of how to organize these contests is lost. 3) ad hoc meetups like ours and like WMDC used to have (ask User:Harej (WMF)) 4) the emerging library group from Wikipedia + Libraries Wikimedia and Libraries User Group that probably doesn't know what they want yet but has a need for library programs that engage the public, and perhaps local institutions and museums, but do not increase their budget. I'm not sure which one is your target audience, or if you are working within a planning context or framework other than "build a tool". Avery Jensen (talk) 06:57, 26 August 2018 (UTC)

[Wikipedia & Education User Group] Updates: November 2018[edit]

Greetings,

Integrating Wikimedia with education is a powerful strategy for the outreach of Wikimedia projects. Realising this concept, a group of leaders promoted this and formed the Wikipedia Education Collaborative. After some time, this evolved to become a user group, officially recognised by the Affiliations Committee in June 2018. The user group had its first board elections earlier in September. In the process to formalise activities and give a shape the user group for long-term sustainability, we are now revamping our processes. Thanks for supporting us during incubation stages, we are now inviting you to formally join the user group by following the instructions on the members' page. Being a member will allow you to be a part of this wonderful collaboration and also do interesting stuff.

Kind regards
On behalf of Wikipedia and Education UG, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 11:44, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

Participate in usability testing for new Event Metrics tool?[edit]

Hi Avery_Jensen. I'd like to invite you to participate in usability tests we're planning for the Event Metrics program now in development. The test will involve a one-hour video conference session with a design researchers, who will lead you through a series of tasks on the program and talk to you about how well the tool's user interface works for you and how it could be improved. Sessions will take place the second and third weeks of January.

If you think you can help out, please email Daisy Chen at dchen[at]wikimedia.org and let her know:

  • The email address where you prefer to be reached.
  • Your time zone
  • General times when you prefer to meet (evenings, mornings, etc.)

Daisy will follow up to schedule a time. Thanks for your help in making Event Metrics a tool that event organizers will find empowering. —JMatazzoni (WMF) (talk) 20:01, 30 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi JMatazzoni (WMF), sorry to have missed this, mostly I follow topics by mailing lists via email, please let me know if there is some mailing list I should subscribe to to follow this topic. Avery Jensen (talk) 20:51, 16 March 2019 (UTC)
Hi Avery. Nice to hear from you. We ran into scheduling snafus and the testing never happened. But Event Metrics will be ready in April, so I hope you will give it a try when it is. —JMatazzoni (WMF) (talk) 01:39, 19 March 2019 (UTC)
JMatazzoni (WMF), I look forward to hearing more about it. I'm afraid we haven't been very active lately, but of course it is a busy time for WMDC with all the women's history month events. Avery Jensen (talk) 03:55, 19 March 2019 (UTC)
I forgot to give you a link! Almost all of the new functionality can be tried out on the Test version of Event Metrics right now. (Mostly what's missing is the new UI, which is still in transition at the moment.) By week's end, we will be "feature complete," which means everything will be there but there may (will) still be bugs. What you can definitely do now is go in and download the new reports. When you have a chance to give it a try, I'd love to get your responses. I'll also be publishing new Help docs this week, so people will know how to do this new stuff. —JMatazzoni (WMF) (talk) 19:59, 25 March 2019 (UTC)
