Turnitin[edit]

Hi :) In one of our recent meetings this tool was mentioned. I'm curious, is this (or something else with the same features) freely available for WP communities? Thanks, --Elitre (talk) 16:09, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Elitre: As I understand it, the connections with Turnitin are still at an in-progress phase. See w:Wikipedia:Turnitin. User:Ocaasi is the person who's been in talks with Turnitin.--Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 21:37, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi User:Elitre, we have access to Turnitin's API and can use it at will. We also have 10,000 document copyvio search queries available to us. I've been giving out accounts to people in the education program, and would be happy to add people from other communities to this list on demand. What were you thinking of?
BTW Sage, I've given about 10 Education Ambassadors accounts for their classes. Maybe we should talk about integrating that in some way into EP process? Cheers, Jake Ocaasi (talk) 23:55, 3 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Cool! I'll email you.--Ragesoss (talk) 17:54, 4 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Wow :) Thanks, User:Ocaasi, I was hoping that people on any Wikipedia, like it.wp, could use that at will, but I wouldn't know how this works. Would they need to apply somewhere? Would there be restrictions of some kind? (For example, does Turnitin works for non-English docs?) I mean, I probably quit work in that field when unrestricted access to Copyscape was discontinued... Hope to hear from you soon. --Elitre (talk) 22:36, 6 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome Elitre, I'd be happy to test it out with you or another IT Wikipedian. Just shoot me an email with the email address(es) you want me to associate with your account and we'll see how it works. Cheers, Jake Ocaasi (talk) 22:31, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What future IdeaLab campaigns would you like to see?[edit]

Hi there,

I’m Jethro, and I’m seeking your help in deciding topics for new IdeaLab campaigns that could be run starting next year. These campaigns aim to bring in proposals and solutions from communities that address a need or problem in Wikimedia projects. I'm interested in hearing your preferences and ideas for campaign topics!

Here’s how to participate:

Take care,

Request for input on Wikipedia video project[edit]

Hello, I have completed an outline of the material that may be covered in the modules on this page.

Please note that not everyone will view every section. For example, some people may want to view only the modules that apply to Wikipedia, and others may be interested in the modules that apply to Commons.

Also, different language Wikipedias sometimes work differently. I am referring to English Wikipedia in the outline. One of the goals of the video series is to make the videos in a way that is easy to translate to other languages. One possible option is that for references to English Wikipedia which have no similarities on a Wikipedia of a different language, the portion of the video that is unnecessary can be removed from the translated version of the video. Also, members of different language communities may produce additional materials which they may add to the videos for their language, or the community members may replace portions of the English-language video with different information that is more applicable to Wikipedia in a different language.

I would appreciate your comments on the grant talk page, preferably by 11 January. Thank you! --Pine 09:22, 7 January 2016 (UTC) [reply]

Future IdeaLab Campaigns results[edit]

Last December, I invited you to help determine future ideaLab campaigns by submitting and voting on different possible topics. I'm happy to announce the results of your participation, and encourage you to review them and our next steps for implementing those campaigns this year. Thank you to everyone who volunteered time to participate and submit ideas.

With great thanks,

I JethroBT (WMF), Community Resources, Wikimedia Foundation. 23:55, 26 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Inspire Campaign on content curation & review[edit]

I've recently launched an Inspire Campaign to encourage new ideas focusing on content review and curation in Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia volunteers collaboratively manage vast repositories of knowledge, and we’re looking for your ideas about how to manage that knowledge to make it more meaningful and accessible. We invite you to participate and submit ideas, so please get involved today! The campaign runs until March 28th.

All proposals are welcome - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is welcome - your skills and experience can help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign to improve review and curation tasks so that we can make our content more meaningful and accessible! I JethroBT (WMF) 05:39, 29 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Open Call for Individual Engagement Grants[edit]

Greetings! The Individual Engagement Grants (IEG) program is accepting proposals until April 12th to fund new tools, research, outreach efforts, and other experiments that enhance the work of Wikimedia volunteers. Whether you need a small or large amount of funds (up to $30,000 USD), IEGs can support you and your team’s project development time in addition to project expenses such as materials, travel, and rental space.

With thanks, I JethroBT (WMF), Community Resources 15:57, 31 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ragesoss,

I created a new Individual Engagement grant to reduce gaps in health information that builds on the learnings from the Grants:IdeaLab/Full Circle Gap Protocol: Addressing the ‘Unknown Unknowns’.

From my work with Cochrane as a Wikipedian in Residence and my observations of other attempts to engage health topic experts in editing, I've come to the conclusion that the quality of the contributions of new health topic expert recruits does not match their level of expertise and effort the we as Wikipedians put into training new medical editors. So, I decided to create a new project to develop a Guided Checklist that would assist a health topic expert in assessing the quality of a health articles on Wikipedia, and then guide their contributions toward making edits to correct the lack of quality.

My individual engagement grant would involve interviewing health topic experts and active medical editors, as well as a community consultation on Wikipedia English WikiProject Med. Please add yourself as a volunteer or adviser if you would like to participate. Or leave suggestions on the talk page. Or endorse if you support the idea. Sydney Poore/FloNight (talk) 17:48, 9 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.

Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,

I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 17:47, 31 May 2016 (UTC) (Opt-out instructions)[reply]

Invitation to Training Modules design conversation[edit]

Hello! We are leaving you this message because you have previously indicated that you interested in helping the Wikimedia Foundation Support & Safety team in developing our training modules this year.

We appreciate all the help and thoughts users like you have offered thus far. We would like to encourage you, if you are interested, to participate in the next step of our development: a community consultation about the design and structure of the modules. Note that we're not yet gathering feedback on the content of the modules - a separate consultation about that will be starting soon.

In this "design" consultation, we're looking for advice on things like the best place to host these modules, the accessibility of content, and other potential design decisions. Please feel free to leave any thoughts you have about these things on the talk page. Thanks! Kbrown (WMF) (talk) 18:08, 8 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Update regarding Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons tutorial videos[edit]

Hello,

I regret to inform you that the series of motivational and educational videos project, which had been planned introduce Wikipedia and some of its sister projects to new contributors, is being discontinued.

There are multiple factors that have led to this decision. The initial budget and time estimates were far too small for a project of this scale and complexity. Also, my simultaneous involvement in Cascadia Wikimedians User Group was problematic due to the shortage of human resources for the user group, which resulted in my spending far more time trying to help the user group than I had planned, so my time and attention were diverted from this video project to assisting the user group.

You can find more information in the final report for the grant.

I regret that this project did not fulfill the hopes that many of us had for it, and I hope that in the future someone with the necessary resources will choose to resume work on it or a similar project. If you are interested in working on this or a similar project then please contact the WMF grants team.

On a personal note, I am retiring from the Wikimedia community. Perhaps I will return someday.

Regards,

Identifying source text for translation[edit]

Hi Ragesoss, I have translated a number of Training modules, and asked some queries to Kaganer. I would not like to push... but I cannot work out how to get some 'loose' segments of excerpts translated, since I do not know exactly where the source lies. Kaganer found this subpage of yours, probably related to this, which I intend to translate. Any hints appreciated! --Iñaki LL (talk) 15:39, 26 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Iñaki LL: Which 'loose segments' are you having trouble with? If you can link me to a dashboard page that you're trying to translate and the corresponding wiki page, I can take a look.--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 23:56, 26 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Iñaki LL: If I understand you correctly, the dashboard quiz page is working with all the translations (here) but the fragments that only appear on-wiki, like 'Test Yourself', are not? It looks like Kaganer added parameters so that these could be translated (although they are not relevant for what appears on the dashboard). In this case, the 'caption' parameter never got added like the other two, so it's not available for translation.--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:22, 27 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(I removed this comment on account of an incorrect link I fix now; you added the comment above after my removal) Um, not sure if we are "on the same page" or not, I think we are close. Besides the page I link above, i.e. the threshold pages leading to the different Training modules, I was referring to the collapse and expand in some quizzes of the latter (this link is one example), as well as "discuss this question" red link (see the slide link provided). I guess this is about the same problem you address here, related to its not having been marked for translation? I see that [the same quiz item in wmflabs looks good though, as you are suggesting above.
Iñaki LL:Yes, I think not being marked for translation is the only problem there.--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:38, 28 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Another question if you can answer is related to the Editing medical topics module, where I had to be creative, so I have omitted two sections, items 9 and 10. Is there any way I can remove them? I did not manage myself.
No, there's no way to remove them at this point. --Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:38, 28 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Lastly, I cannot find where the source for the phrase detailing the page, "Orriko 11 12(e)tik", lies. That is wrong. Due to the different word order from English and the Basque case system, it should look like this: "11. orria 12(e)tik". Could you work that out? Thanks for the patience... --Iñaki LL (talk) 16:02, 28 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That's one of the interface messages from translatewiki.net: here. Updates there will show up eventually on the dashboard.--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:38, 28 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Have made some progress now. I hope the page numbers will refresh soon (still not refreshing...). So is there any way to know where the source for this and this lies? --Iñaki LL (talk) 17:17, 28 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The page numbers won't update until first the updated translation gets moved from translatewiki to the dashhboard codebase (usually happens every few days), and then I deploy the latest changes (also usually every few days). The library and module pages are not yet translatable, although there's a volunteer developer working on that.--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:26, 28 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
